“Where's the remote?”
He shrugged. “I threw it away. I didn't need it once I shut off the implants. Why should I turn it back on again?”
Une was seething on the inside. “Where is the control implant?”
“Why should I tell you? I'm up for lethal injection. You aren't offering me any bargains, so I have nothing to gain.”
“What would it take?”
Knight raised a shoulder. “Is Duo so important to you that you'd grant life?”
She pursed her lips and stood. “I'll consider it.” She left the room and called her secretary. “I'm going to Winner's.”
“Another family called saying that their son signed up for some experiment and never came back.”
She sighed. “How many does that make now?”
“Thirteen. All confirmed by Mackenzie.”
She released a heavy breath as she sat in the back of the car and the driver pulled out of the parking lot. Mackenzie, or 'Mack' as the underworld knew him, had broken like a drunken teenager trying to save his hide from a father's belt. He'd been invaluable in racking up the charges against Knight. “Set me up a meeting with the families as quickly as possible. I need you to patch me through to Relena Peacecraft immediately.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
A few moments later, the minister's voice came over the line. “It's Relena. What did you need?”
“Knight will tell us where the implant is if we take away the death penalty.”
Relena was silent for a long moment. A pacifist at heart, but she knew the difference between murder and the death penalty. Some people were beyond help, had wiped away every trace of humanity from their souls and were a danger to society. She agreed with the institution for the unrepentant mass-murderers. Finally she sighed. “I agree to it. Save Duo.”
Une smiled. “Thank you.”
She hung up and stared out the window, wondering if she could possibly get the families to understand why they let the man live in the hopes of saving the life of a man they'd never met. Her own mind was in war over it. The man had earned the death penalty as surely as any serial killer. He had no remorse for his action. No respect for human life outside his own. He didn't see others as worth anything more fodder for his experiments. And overturning the death penalty wasn't a decision to be made lightly, especially when it was made to save the life of only one man.
She knew there was a chance to save Duo without Knight's help, but it was very slim. She would have liked to tell herself her concern was due to nothing more than trying to keep one of her men alive, but it was more than that. Maxwell was a bright light to all around him, as infuriating as he could be at times. He had a way of keeping all those around him on their toes and in good spirits. She couldn't imagine life without him. She didn't want to.
“Ma'am, we're here.”
She pulled herself from her thoughts and nodded. “Thank you.”
A few minutes later she was in the kitchen of the estate, sipping on tea while Chang made breakfast. After the harrowing experience of the week before, she'd forced him into a two-week vacation period. He'd only agreed, reluctantly, when Heero had asked him to.
“How do you like your eggs?”
The domestic feel of the moment got to her and she couldn't help but chuckle, drawing strange glances from Davis, Chang and Winner. “Sorry, I just didn't realize Chang could cook.”
He rolled his eyes. “Woman, how else did you think I made it through the war?”
She shrugged. “Never thought about it. Sunny-side up, if you don't mind.”
“I want an omelet,” Quatre declared.
Onyx eyes narrowed. “Then make it yourself, because I'm not about to.”
Blake smirked. “But no one makes them as good as you.” A soft grunt drew his attention to the doorway. He was about to make a rhetorical remark when he truly took in his lover. Duo was leaning heavily against the frame, one hand resting beneath his chin. He stood but found he couldn't move much further.
“Duo?”
“I l-l-l-l-love...” He slid to the floor and Quatre grabbed his cell as Blake knelt next to him and lifted his chin. Violet eyes were open but dazed.
“Duo?”
“Sh...sh-sh...” He blinked owlishly. “Ju-j-j-j-” Blake lifted Duo from the floor and ran for the door. Quatre held it open, Wufei and Une running ahead of him to the SUV.
“Sally! We're bringing Duo in.”
“What happened?”
“He just collapsed.” Quatre climbed into the passenger seat as Une helped Blake get in the backseat with Duo and Wufei jumped in the driver's seat.
“Is he unconscious?”
Quatre glanced over his shoulder. “Not exactly. His eyes are open but unfocused and he's mumbling gibberish.”
“Pulse?”
“What's his pulse, Blake?”
The other blond checked it. “Steady but weak.”
“You hear that?”
“Yeah. Breathing?”
Quatre relayed the request and Une put her hand to Duo's nose. “Shallow but unlabored,” she pronounced.
Sally wasted no time. “Bladder function?”
Quatre relayed and Blake shook his head. “No mess.”
Sally took a breath. “Sounds like an episode only affecting the brain.”
“Only?” the blond squeaked.
“Okay, not the best terms, but you know what I mean. We've seen this.”
Quatre took a breath. “Yeah, but a leg or arm, or a gall bladder, is different from the brain,” he murmured.
Sally was quiet a moment. “Quatre, it's a spell. He'll come out of it.”
The blond shook his head. “What does it matter if you don't have the cure?”
Une cleared her throat. “Actually, Knight promised the location for the sixth implant.”
Wufei glanced in the rear view mirror. “How did you manage that?”
She released a breath. “No death penalty.” She watched as Wufei's hands tightened on the steering wheel. “Chang?”
He flicked his eyes to the rear view and met her reflection. “That's fine with me. Just make sure there's no way out of the hole you throw him into.”
She smiled thinly. “My pleasure.”
Sally, several nurses, and a stretcher were outside the infirmary doors as they pulled into the parking lot. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the SUV pull to a screeching stop. “It wouldn't have done Duo any good if you'd gotten into a wreck. What were you thinking driving like that?”
“I was thinking he needed help,” Wufei snapped.
Blake climbed out of the car and laid Duo on the stretcher. Sally bent over him, checking his pulse. “Duo, can you hear me?”
The only response she received was more garbled slurs. “Get him inside.”
******
Trowa ducked into Heero's cubicle. “Adams said they brought Duo in a little while ago.”
He was on his feet instantly, following Trowa to the infirmary. He was expecting maybe chaos, screaming machines or cries from Sally for certain actions. He wasn't expecting to see calm. Wufei and Quatre sat on either side of Blake. There were no comforting words, all three of their eyes were locked on the bed where Duo lay. Heero followed their gazes, paling as he saw he best friend.
The steady beat of the heart monitor rang through the room, although it was a little slower than it should have been. His eyes were open but unseeing and his lips moved with hushed mewls that made no sense. Sally was still examining him.
“How long have you been here?”
Wufei looked to him. “Fifteen minutes, roughly. And it took five to get here. So he's been like that for a little over twenty minutes.”
Trowa neared the bed but stayed out of Sally's way. “Will he come out of it?”
Sally hooked her stethoscope over her neck and turned to face them. “From what I can see, it's just a spell. But, just in case.” she focused slowly on Blake. “Has he said whether or not he wants to be resuscitated? I mean outside of the episodes.”
The blond paled. “Um... yeah. He wants you to as long as there's hope.” He struggled to get the words out. “But if it's obvious there's nothing you can do, he wants...” he choked, “wants to be let go.”
Sally nodded and Quatre put a hand on Blake's shoulder, squeezing gently. “He'll make it.”
“I wasn't asking because I believe he won't come out of this episode, but once the attacks start on the brain, the body weakens more quickly.”
The door slammed open and Une stepped in, face red from hot anger. “Do the surgery.”
Sally raised an eyebrow. “Where's the implant?”
Une shook her head. “Not that one, the one Moore cooked up. Marcus Knight strangled himself to death.”
Wufei's mouth fell open. “Why would he kill himself? I thought he wanted to live!”
She threw her hands in the air. “The hell if I know! I should have gotten the location before I left him.”
Sally shook off her shock and clenched her jaw. “There's no way you could have known. Don't blame yourself. I'm going to call Cynthia and get her to come and help me with this.” She looked back to Blake.
“I'll do everything I can.”
He nodded. “I know.”
After a moment of silence, a weak voice drifted from the bed. “What's people screamin' 'bout?”
Blake jumped to his feet and ran to the side of the bed. He smiled through his tears as he saw recognition in Duo's eyes. “Hey, welcome back.”
Chestnut brows drew together. “What happened?”
“You had an episode.”
He bit his lip. “I don't remember.” His eyes were pleading for Blake to give an answer that wouldn't scare the crap out of him, but at the same time Duo would never have settled for anything but the truth.
“It hit your brain.”
He closed his eyes. “How long was it?”
“About twenty-five minutes.” Blake sat on the edge of the bed, taking Duo's hand. “Duo, Sally is calling in Cynthia Moore. They're going to try that surgery.”
He nodded slowly, opening his eyes again and meeting his lover's. “Hold me,” he whispered.
The others left the room as Blake stretched out next to Duo. He murmured encouragements that everything would be okay and Duo agreed softly... Neither believed a word the other said.
