Oracle Fish - A small blue female fish that looks more like a tadpole with an antenna. She has prophetic powers and rides around in a liquid-filled bowl atop a self-propelled scepter. She’s generally sweet, caring and helpful.

Vegeta woke up feeling incredibly sated. He stretched and sore muscles protested, and even the soreness in his lower half lended to the contentment thrumming through him. He turned his head to see Goku grinning at him like the proverbial idiot. “What are you looking at?”
“Scowling only works if you have enough energy to look angry, Vegeta.”
Vegeta rolled his eyes. “I figured I’d give it a shot. Damn, did I…” He frowned, remembering having begged Goku for another round after waking a few hours ago. Goku had entered him slowly from behind as they lay on their sides and driven him to such an unhurried, powerful climax that he’d broken down in the aftermath. He covered his eyes with a hand. “That was…”
“Fucking amazing,” Goku finished for him. “Is it going to be like this from now on? With you turning into a squirming, needy little sex kitten every month? Ow!”
“Asshole. I have no idea,” Vegeta answered as Goku rubbed his newly sore arm. “But I’d guess the drive is higher now because we’re bonded, and since I’m not conceiving my body doesn’t know when to stop. And what the hell is with you anyway? Why do you get like that with me?”
“Get like what? What did I… Oh. That,” he said as Vegeta added some helpful reminders of how controlling he could be. Goku scratched his head and chuckled. “I don’t know, I don’t do it on purpose, it just happens. I’ve never been like that before. But I like it. So do you,” he added. “You’re always watching everything, always thinking. When I get demanding with you, you relax inside. It’s nice for both of us. Does it bother you?”
Vegeta scooted closer and rested his head on Goku’s shoulder, immediately getting pulled into a tight embrace. Goku was right, his brain tended to short circuit when Goku took over. And as much as he normally loathed any loss of control, it felt good. “It surprises me, I wouldn’t have expected that from you. But no, it doesn't bother me. I like it too. Just don’t tell anyone I let a third-class idiot boss me around. It’ll ruin my image.” He smirked when he felt Goku’s chest moving under his head as he laughed.
“I was thinking we could tell Whis we need the day off. I can still smell you pretty strongly; it’s not over yet.”
“No, I want to try. I don’t feel so hot inside anymore, so it’s at least on a low swing for now. I wish I had answers, but… I don’t know what the hell is happening. It’s so fucking frustrating.”
Goku frowned. “Vegeta, changing yourself the way you did was the bravest thing I’ve ever even heard of. I’m honored to be a part of it. I know how hard it is for you to be out of control, but I’m with you all the way,” he said, taking Vegeta’s hand in his. “We’re both going to get through this together.”
Vegeta’s soft smile against his chest was so beautiful to feel, Goku pulled him up and kissed it because he had to.
And when the moment passed, he teased Vegeta, because he had to.
“...And I’m definitely with you all the way as long as you keep begging me to fuck you and squirming and cumming all over me you horny little sex kitten. Ow. Vegeta! Power down, it was a joke! Ow!”

Whis tightened the cloth over Vegeta’s eyes until he was satisfied that he couldn’t see anything. He lifted off the ground with a smile; this was one of his favorite exercises.
“Find me,” Whis’ voice finally echoed from nowhere at all.
The great chamber on the lower level of Beerus’ planet was great indeed, bigger than any other room save Beerus’ own. Finding Whis in it would be no small task, his presence was a complete blank. Vegeta frowned for a moment, then sat on his knees, hands flat on his thighs. He opened himself, using his ki sense as he usually did and felt nothing. But ki sense had a range, just like any other sense. He just had to search the wavelengths. It would take time but he and Whis were both patient.
Whis watched, pleased that he has been correct. Vegeta knew exactly what to do without being told. He sipped a cup of tea as he waited, wondering yet again what Beerus had planned for the two Saiyans from Earth. Faster than he had predicted, Vegeta gasped, most likely from the shock of sensing his presence for the first time. Sure enough his head snapped straight to the corner of the ceiling where he floated.
“Good,” he congratulated. “But that took far too long. Practice.” He moved himself again and again, and Vegeta’s reaction time got better each time until finally there was no delay.
Whis dropped to the floor and unfastened the blindfold. “Well done, Vegeta.” The smaller man frowned, looking around in confusion. Whis had wondered if this would happen, and pushed it along. “Where else can you sense it?”
Vegeta frowned, pointed further into the dead, twisting tree. “Beerus there, you, and… Who is that? There’s someone… where Kakarot is… This doesn’t make any sense.” He rose and started to fly but stopped, unwilling to spend even that little time. He disappeared and Whis followed.
He couldn’t miss any of this. It was a test, and a very important one. If they were to reach their full potential as quickly as they needed to they had to be completely done with their rivalry. Vegeta had spent so long trying to best Goku that Whis waited eagerly to see what he would do.
Part of him hoped he would fail the test. Passing it would cement them on the course he had set them on, they’d have no choice but to complete it.
Goku had been heaving a heavy weight around on Whis’ orders. He stopped in alarm when Vegeta appeared in his path. “What’s wrong?” he asked, pulling his hands from the wrist holds and wiping the sweat from his brow. “Do we need to go again?” he asked with a smirk, but it fell when Vegeta didn’t rise to the bait.
“Kakarot… It’s still inside you,” he marveled.
“What is? Vegeta?”
“The god ki from the ritual,” he breathed. “You just can’t sense it but... it’s there.”
Goku’s mouth suddenly went dry. God ki… When Beerus had showed up to Earth demanding to fight a Saiyan god no one had known what he was talking about. But after a good amount of research and Shenron’s help they had gathered the only six Saiyans on the planet to complete the ritual that would transform Goku into the Saiyan god Beerus had come to fight. Between the newly gained power - bestowed, not earned - time limit, and lack of knowledge of how to properly use it, for him it had been a hollow fight.
Goku looked at his hands like he’d never seen them before. The thought of having that power at his disposal was heady. No limitations, time to truly make it his and learn to use it properly…
But the the nuances of ki sensing were Vegeta’s strong suit, not his. He could learn it but it would take far longer than he wanted to wait. What he really needed was Vegeta’s expertise. Was it even fair to ask though? This was exactly what he’d feared of becoming, merely a stepping stone for his mate to reach new heights of power.
Vegeta didn’t even seem to notice his indecision. He felt Vegeta’s mental ‘knock’ and responded by opening up as much as he could. Immediately Vegeta’s presence filled him, searching.
Goku couldn’t follow what he was doing but trusted him enough not to worry about that. After a while he could feel Vegeta getting frustrated.
He crossed the physical distance between them and hesitated at the last second. “I'm going to need more control for this.”
Goku knew what his mate was capable of, had watched him painfully and meticulously set Gohan’s mind back to its default state against Gohan’s own will in his own mind. With complete control Vegeta could have Goku on his hands and knees barking like a dog for the rest of his life if he wanted it that way.
‘How much do you trust me?’
Goku smiled gently, answered the unspoken question with actions. He sat cross-legged, closed his eyes. Tipped his head back, as though he were just enjoying the sunslight and not about let another person do some redecorating in his mind and body without restriction.
‘Completely.’
Vegeta wasted no time. He crawled into Goku’s lap and latched onto his neck with lips and teeth. The bond flared open to its widest and Vegeta pushed into it.
Goku didn’t know how long they stayed like that. He ‘watched,’ felt Vegeta’s presence commanding and firm in his mind. He was doing some of the same things he’d done in Gohan’s mind, except he was building and changing pathways instead of destroying them. Sometimes he would test something or other and it would feel like a punch to his brain, but it was nothing he was going to complain about. After a while he could feel Vegeta straining, tiring but he never slowed in his work.
Vegeta, stop. You’re pushing yourself too far!
//Shut up, don’t distract me. Just a little… more… There!//
Finally he broke full contact with a hiss and collapsed in Goku’s arms, pressing a hand to his head and moaning. //Your body will have to get stronger before you can use it in base form, but the pathways will appear when it’s time. Until then I had to tie it to a form strong enough to control the power.//
“Vegeta? I… I can see the ki now but I don’t understand… What did you do?”
//Go Super Saiyan.//
“I might burn you-”
//I like it when you burn me, idiot. Just do it.//
Goku filed that information away and jumped himself into his more powerful form, still not understanding.
//Now… push.//
Goku frowned, but did as he was told. He reached for more power the way he always did when moving to a higher form.
He roared through a few moments of intense, fiery pain as the new, almost infinitely stronger god ki flooded new pathways. His arms tightened around Vegeta so hard it must have hurt but he said nothing, only reassured him silently that everything would be fine. The new power, so dizzying in its magnitude filled every cell. He didn’t know how much of it was the nature of the god ki itself and how much was Vegeta’s doing, but he didn’t have to fight it for control the way had when he’d become a Super Saiyan. He couldn’t control his aura yet, and it blazed around him.
“Vegeta…” Goku touched Vegeta’s face, laced their fingers together, torn. He wanted to go learn, train, explore but he didn’t want to leave Vegeta, who had made this possible. He pulled Vegeta close, could feel his consciousness slipping but needed to convey his gratitude somehow…
Vegeta of course felt all of it and chuckled as his vision greyed out. //Go play. Thank me… later. You look… good… in blue…//

Whis watched Goku tearing joyously through the sky, throwing punches and kicks, running familiar drills to compare and marvel at how much faster, how much stronger he had become.
Oracle Fish zoomed in, drawn by the explosion of power Goku’s ascension had caused. She frowned. “He’s coming along a lot faster than Beerus thought he would.”
“Yes.” Whis was silent for a moment and Oracle Fish just enjoyed the show. “He’s surpassed himself,” Whis said finally.
“No kidding, just look at that power, I can’t believe he figured out how to use it! He’s even remembering not to use energy attacks so he doesn’t wake Beerus,” she snickered.
“...I wasn’t talking about Goku.” Oracle Fish turned to see Whis staring at Vegeta’s unconscious form. “I just held still long enough for him to figure out how to sense god ki. He did the rest. He’s all right,” Whis added at her concerned look. “He just needs rest and food, he overextended himself in the process. I don’t think Goku knows how much work Vegeta spared him. Even though he still has a lot to learn using the power that easily should have required at least several weeks of training.”
Vegeta had known the consequences, that he would once again be a major step behind Goku in terms of power. Even so, he had done this eagerly. Whis grimaced. “He’s knocking down the walls between them much faster than anticipated. If this continues it will be problematic and I can’t even tell them why.”
“Isn’t this what you were after?” Oracle asked pointedly. “Why is it upsetting you now?”
“I guess I’m getting cold feet,” Whis sighed. This was so much simpler when they were a means to an end and he hadn’t cared about their lives. If they failed it didn’t matter, he would just try again. But somehow these two had begun to mean something to him.
“It’s not too late to turn back. You could just send them home. Beerus might forget about them.”
Whis gave an undignified snort. “He won’t forget. You know how long he’s been meddling in the Saiyan’s development. He’s going to recognize what Vegeta has done to himself right away. As long as the race was dying he was content to let them fade away, but he won’t accept their numbers growing again.”
“He’ll kill them all, won’t he?”
“Not right away; he has some use for them beyond the usual entertainment. But eventually he’ll have no choice but to try.”
“Oh, boy,” said Oracle, rubbing her small head with her even smaller fin. “I hate to see you like this. I know, I know. I don’t owe you anything for saving my life when Beerus destroyed my world. But if there’s anything I can do…?”
“As a matter of fact, there is. There are going to be things I can’t do, questions I can’t answer. Keep an eye on them. Don’t put yourself in harm’s way but do what you can for them. And when it’s time… answer their questions. All of them.”
Oracle nodded. “I understand.”
“I don’t know what Beerus has in mind for them but I’m certain he’s underestimated these two.” Whis turned, walked to Vegeta’s unconscious body, curled in and head pillowed on Goku’s folded gi top.
Such a small thing, with the power to potentially shake the universe.
“When Goku gets tired of exercising tell him to take Beerus’ favorite pet rabbit for a walk around the planet.”
Oracle Fish’s scales paled. “You mean the really big one with all the-”
“Mouths and teeth. That’s the one. And be sure to give him the short leash. Vegeta’s strength is going to have to catch up to Goku’s, but Goku relies far too much on Instantaneous Movement for speed when he fights. Staying clear should give him some good agility training; he’s got to come up to Vegeta’s level there.”
“I will. But… this is going to be more dangerous than you thought, Whis. What will you do?”
“I have been ordered to train them and I will simply do my job to the best of my abilities.” He lifted Vegeta easily and set off. “Beyond that… You’re the oracle. You tell me.”

Whis generally coveted his personal space. He even went so far as to ban Beerus from his rooms unless it was an emergency.
So when he found himself heading there with Vegeta he wondered at himself, but went with it. True whimsy was a welcome change.
His rooms were filled with artifacts, artwork and various things he’d saved from planets whose time had come to an end at Beerus’ hands. And his bed - complete with cloud-like mattress and fluffy sheets - was far more comfortable than the one in Vegeta’s room.
He maneuvered Vegeta out of his armor and boots and placed him in amongst the numerous pillows, giggling as the self-professed ‘dog person’ sank into them and rumbled deep in his chest like a pampered housecat.
He rested a hand on Vegeta’s forehead, monitoring him to make sure there was nothing serious keeping him unconscious. After only a couple of seconds there was a sharp intake of breath and Vegeta’s eyes flew open. Whis was actually startled into pulling his hand away. “Are you all right?”
Vegeta’s eyes closed again in a pained expression. “Purple oceans. Never seen anything like that before.”
“Nor will you again,” Whis said, surprised that Vegeta had been able to read him. He shook himself, smiled widely. “Your brain stopped producing the chemical that regulates your telepathy in response to how hard you were pushing. You’re going to be a little sensitive until it gets back to normal. My apologies, contrary to your experience telepathic species are somewhat rare. I’ve gotten lax with my shielding! Get some rest, you should feel better after a few hours sleep.”
“It gets... lonely. Most people can’t understand that.” Whis waited, curious as to what Vegeta meant and wondering what else he had picked up from their brief contact. “I stopped caring about all the devastation for selfish reasons. My home planet was destroyed. They were my people, finally beginning to realize their potential. I knew many of them, felt responsible for all of them, was fond of some of them even. If my people in all their strength weren’t special enough to live, if I had to go through that without shedding any tears I wouldn’t shed them for planets full of people I didn’t even know, even if they did die by my hand. There was no justice in the universe.”
Vegeta fell silent. He recognized so much of his own self in the things he had sensed from Whis that he was driven to acknowledge it. If Whis felt like talking, he would. Vegeta knew better than to push.
Whis’ smile faltered after a moment and he sighed deeply. For his part the same impulse that had led him to bring Vegeta here in the first place drove him to answer. “There was a planet I loved. It was beautiful, purple oceans, trees with iridescent leaves, the kindest and most generous inhabitants almost child-like in their innocence. And amazing food, of course!” He smiled brightly, but he paused, the smile fading until it was barely present. “I steered Beerus clear of it for centuries, but it caught his eye one day soon after he’d awoken.” Whis sighed and Vegeta flinched at the pain in it. “A thorny plant of some kind tore his favorite pair of pants, and so he ordered me to destroy my world. I vaporized it because of a fit of pique. They of all people, that planet in all its beauty had to die. I couldn’t really bring myself to care about much after that. Why get attached?”
This was usually where cries of ‘how could you be a party to that?!’ and ‘serves you right!’ had come in when he had indulged in this kind of conversation before. But true to form, Vegeta surprised him.
“No matter how much you tell yourself it doesn’t matter, what you have to do never leaves you alone though, does it? Some of the things Freeza had me do were… just evil. I never did have a peaceful night’s sleep no matter how much I told myself I didn’t care.”
Whis laughed, a bitter sounding thing. He'd had far longer to learn to ignore the niggling of his conscience over the things he'd seen and done, but it still raised its voice to nag at him from time to time. “No one sees you as anything but a monster. And the worst part is that you’re not ever entirely sure they’re wrong.”
“As I said,” Vegeta sighed. “Lonely.”
“Quite.”
“Wiping out entire civilizations, destroying whole worlds all on someone else’s orders… I wasn’t at it as long as you have been. But I understand. If you ever want to not feel lonely for awhile.”
Whis hadn’t had a legitimate offer of friendship for so long it took him a few moments to understand that’s what was happening. And he couldn’t deny feeling better at having someone to talk to about these things, someone who actually understood. If Vegeta was amused by his being flustered he had the good grace not to show it. “That would be... nice,” Whis finally said. “Thank you.”
Vegeta was exhausted, barely able to keep his eyes open. He seemed a little more talkative than usual as a result and Whis decided now might be a good time to get some answers out of him. “If I may ask, why did you give Goku access to the god ki inside of him? He would have understood if you hadn’t.”
Vegeta sighed sleepily. “The idiot wanted it. I didn’t think much past that to be honest.”
“But now he’s ahead of you again. Do you regret it?”
Vegeta snorted, remembering the desire his mate had felt for the unreachable power within him and his own drive when he realized he could deliver it. Even now he was careening joyously through the sky, reveling in his newfound power as a true warrior should.
Vegeta chuckled, and Whis found it to be the most open he’d seen Vegeta since he’d gotten here. “He’s happy. How could I regret it? Besides, I do better when I have something to reach for. I’ll catch up. I always do. And since you’re pumping me for information I might as well do the same. I’m assuming you’ve met other destroyer gods from other universes?” At Whis’s nod he continued. “Are they all as… temperamental as Beerus?” he asked bluntly.
Vegeta was still feeling more than he usually did and he had the impression of Whis’s thoughts darkening even though his facial expression never changed.
“No. They aren’t. Some have rules about which planets to weed out, and some make arbitrary choices to keep things random, and others make considered decisions as they travel.”
“I wonder what those universes are like,” Vegeta mused sleepily. “There’s a kind of sense in random decisions but even so… It almost seems like our universe is stacked against ‘good.’ I wonder if Beerus’ decisions are as arbitrary as they seem.”
Vegeta’s observations were more than he could have hoped for, and Whis had to work to cover his relief so Vegeta wouldn’t feel it. It had taken so long, so mind-numbingly long to find the right people with the right skills, and now it seemed his patience had finally paid off. And greatest of all, they were Saiyan.
This universe had a sense of justice after all.
Vegeta started chuckling to himself, pulling Whis out of his thoughts. “What’s so funny?”
“I’m going to owe you some laundry service or else you’re going to be in for some rough nights for a while.”
Whis laughed. “I hadn’t thought of that.” His bed was going to smell like in-heat Saiyan and he was most definitely affected, though he didn’t think Vegeta had noticed. “Not every species stronger than you that you come into contact with is going to want to hurt you.”
“It’s actually comforting,” Vegeta said, eyelids getting heavy. “To know there’s at least one species… too highly evolved… to fuck their pets.”
Whis’ smile disappeared at that but it was too late to say anything as Vegeta was already fast asleep. Surely Vegeta knew he didn’t think of him as a pet-
It came as a shock when Vegeta grumbled, reached out and flicked him right between the eyes, something he never would have done - at least to Whis - were he entirely awake. Whis blinked widely for a moment before reinforcing his shielding while smothering a burst of laughter. Usually only Goku was the recipient of the ‘stop thinking so loud’ flick.
His laughter faded again as he regarded one half of his newest pair of students. He quite purposely avoided thinking about what Vegeta’s upbringing must have been like, to turn the foolhardy yet selfless child he’d seen so briefly all those decades ago into this hardened creature so wary of trusting others.
It was true that asking for permission from something easily overpowered wasn’t exactly Beerus’ style. And ‘no’ wasn’t a word he tolerated when directed at him.
It was almost a certainty that his most reliable soldier had the same attitude.
Beerus and Freeza were much alike, after all. Spoiled children far too accustomed to getting their own way.
Thoughts about the future troubled Whis in a way that hadn’t happened in hundreds of thousands of years.
*************************************************************************************************************
A/N time. I did say that I’m sticking to canon as much as possible, but I didn’t say which one and I figure it’s time I did so since I’m confusing people. Read the following if you’re wondering where I get my base understanding of the Saiyans since the anime doesn’t really reflect it all:
With such a vast and sometimes conflicting sandbox as Dragonball I found it essential to pick a reference source to stick to as closely as possible so I don’t get lost. I chose manga canon and the supplemental guides as the reference, as Toriyama had his hands in them far more than the anime. While I love the anime, Toei took a lot of license on a lot of things (remember when the Namekians had four fingers? Good times…) and I’d rather go with Toriyama. He wasn’t quite as contradictory with himself back then as he is now. XD I did start writing before I read DB Minus and Episode of Bardok, however, so consider Father of Goku canon for this story.
Those materials present all Saiyans as having black hair and eyes, and Toriyama hasn’t - as far as I know - backed off from this (remember in the anime when Vegeta had reddish-brown hair and then suddenly it was black before he tells everyone about the Saiyan double black? And King Vegeta’s hair was brown in some movies/series and black in later ones? Inconsistencies abound far more than in the manga). As far as Saiyan relationships go, there’s an article with Toriyama (Saikyo Jump, 2013 or 2014, I think) where he says that Saiyans don’t really do romance and marriage, he even goes into the fact that they don’t raise their children the way we do (different source material though), so that’s where I get my ideas of how they handle relationships, human or otherwise, like why story Goku is so chill about Vegeta not raising their children himself.
Don’t get me wrong, as any DBZ forum will tell you, everything is arguable. And I’m still blatantly making stuff up, but that’s where I’m starting from. Hope that helps.
