Chapter 18
Tora found Kakarot soon after his meeting with Vegeta and he wondered at the glow on his face. The young man was in incredibly high spirits but he would not say why. Tora was happy, nonetheless, for he desired nothing more than to see a renewal of life in both of Bardock’s boys, and it seemed he would get his wish, after all. Seeing them so lighthearted made his own pain more bearable, and he often smiled and spoke to Bardock under his breath.
As promised, Tora stayed in the castle for some time, for neither brother was willing to part with him any time soon, and there was still the ceremony for Raditz which he must attend but he declined the King’s initial offer to move in, happy with the option to return and visit with them at his desire.
However, during the course of his stay, he met with Jetome, a gentleman of the courts whom he had only ever heard about from Raditz, and upon first site of him he believed himself to be in love. He ignored the absurd feelings, of course, but their paths crossed so many times, and upon speaking to the handsome man on many occasions which they were both involved in, such as the planning of Raditz’s Merger, it became increasingly difficult to deny his feelings, although Jetome’s smiling face disclosed nothing in particular to him.
There were other things to attend to. A separate ceremony was held for Raditz, and he was elevated in class to Elite, and moved up in rank from Commander to the King’s Advisor, therefore the King kept his word to him to have him more involved in all of the castle’s business. Everyone was pleased with this decision and no one could say anything more of his previously taboo relationship with Banin.
The men and women who slandered the King’s name were tossed out of the mansion for good (and being watched) and some of the men and women who helped that day in the fight who did not live at the castle were asked to move in and become a part of the King’s court. The King then began to be commonly known as generous and considerate among other goodly qualities only few ever saw in him before. The people of the castle noticed, too, that Kakarot was constantly at his side, but there was no explanation yet as to why. No one dared ask either man anything on the topic, they knew too little of Kakarot, and Vegeta had never been the type to entertain the masses on his private life. Rumors did spread, though, that they were more of an intimate item than they were leading on.
After a few weeks of deliberation, another event which both Tora and Jetome sat together during, Bardock was also named a member of the court and an honorary service was held for his death. His home remained as it was, though the personal belongings which Raditz and Kakarot desired were theirs to keep. The rest of it was to be maintained and open to those who wished to come and think in peace and perhaps gain wisdom. Bardock’s information and his family records therefore became tied with that of the Royal House, not to mention that his bloodline would soon forever be connected to the house of Vegeta with the Merger that would take place between his son and the King in only a few weeks’ time, though no one knew of it, yet.
Tora gave Raditz to Banin as Bardock would have when the pair finally went through their Merger during the full moon (of course, everyone stayed inside) and the night was a magical one indeed.
It was that very night that Jetome, after a few stiff drinks, found it in his heart to confess to Tora that he had never met another man like him and that he couldn’t get him out of his mind, and then he laughed and said he was sorry for bringing it up because he hardly knew what he was saying, and he hadn’t said much more than that before Tora kissed him fervently. They stole themselves away to be alone for the remainder of the evening, but not without being seen by the ever watchful eyes of the King and the King-to-be.
A week later Vegeta held another very important meeting, and he announced to the Saiyans of the castle that he would soon be entering into his own mergament with none other than Kakarot. No one knew what to think, save for Raditz, Banin, Jetome, and Ivony, of course. Tora was floored by the news, for although he knew it was going to happen, they had done a good job of hiding it and also of making a spectacle of themselves.
The whole room was in an uproar. Many of the Saiyans who did not go to the battle against Brolly were very unsure of the union, and they began to say so. However, those who were there had no problem with the union whatsoever, third-class or not, Kakarot is a Super Saiyan, and in their eyes the King has made a wise choice.
Vegeta and Kakarot simply stood side by side smiling to each other and the crowd as they grew more and more rambunctious over the news. They enjoyed the spectacle and had no intention of hushing them or explaining themselves.
Jetome, however, was no longer in any mood to listen to such ignorance, and he stood up and asked the King if he could speak. Vegeta gave him the floor, and sat back with Kakarot to listen. Jetome silenced the men and women of the audience quickly and gave a speech honoring his King and also Kakarot, explaining from his perspective what a joyous union this will be, and urging that no one dare contest to it. It was at this point which he boldly confessed his love for Tora, who sat beside Raditz amongst the crowd, and declared that he would personally attest to anyone who openly disagreed with their relationship. Tora could only blush but he stood up and joined him on the platform, where they kissed for all to see. The two Kings began to clap as they smiled at their friends, and while Ivony and Anyun were in awe by Jetome’s inspiring fashion, they decided to join them on their crusade to end the inequality of their system and they stood up and praised both King Vegeta and “Prince” Kakarot.
They spent much of their time spreading their personal joy at the good news about the relationship between Kakarot and their King and Tora and Jetome (for no one saw either coming) and when they weren’t busy defending them, which was only necessary for about two weeks, these friends were often at Kakarot’s side, getting to know him, for he seemed to move about as he pleased and warm Saiyans lives everywhere he went. Soon everyone made an attempt to get closer to the man who would become the right hand of their King, and none were disappointed in doing so. Spending time with him made the sun seem to shine brighter in the day and the moon’s hidden gleam hum even more peacefully at night.
The change of heart in the King could be noticed world-wide. There was so much excitement at the castle it couldn’t be contained, and the news was spreading at an alarming rate around the world that they would soon have two Super Saiyan Kings. Only a few months had passed since the battle of Brolly and so much had changed. The wrongs were righted, from the King actually keeping his meetings within the castle, and his promises to those races to help them rid their society of Frieza’s evil henchmen.
Vegeta began to take great pleasure in his duties as King, and he took an even greater liking to his evenings spent with Kakarot, and anytime in between it could be seen in his eyes and on his face that he has found happiness and every day he came out of his shell a little bit more.
Even though some Saiyans, those who never met Kakarot, still thought it odd that the King would choose such a man as his suitor, any who met him, even casually, seemed to instantly understand and they defended him with alacrity and so in that way, soon the whole planet knew him to be a gentleman and a leader unlike they’d ever seen before. For once their world wasn’t consumed with the negative tendencies of the cosmos, but the brightness of their future which was soon to be under the guide of two powerful Super Saiyans, one who ruled with intelligence and the other who governed with righteousness.
King Vegeta spent some time in heavy solitude as affairs were being settled. At Kakarot’s urging, he took to the advice that he had gotten from Bardock before he died and slowly began doing away with the class system. Saiyans were no longer marked by any Rank until or unless they desired to become either First Class or Elite, and those titles pertained mostly to civil protective services and army positions, or city councilors. The strong would still protect the weak, but the weak would no longer be subjugated to a defined class which kept them from moving up in the world. With that Kakarot was pleased, and Vegeta felt that he had done something right as the people of the world rejoiced.
To the men and women of the courts he urged Jetome and Ivony to explain the particulars involving Rori, including things that even Kakarot and Raditz did not know, and no one questioned the King’s sound reasoning on the matter after that, for they saw that he was not wholly unaffected by the loss of his friend, only that he felt it necessary to protect his people, even at the cost of himself. With that understanding, he gained their respect and their loyalty, tenfold.
As for the question of Kakarot, that was the number one topic on Vegeta’s mind and he felt he owed no explanation. He was caught up in Kakarot and everything that he had to offer. On this subject, no one else’s opinion occurred to him in the slightest. Kakarot would be his and everything else came second.
He spent some time in deep consideration of what it would mean to Merger with him, and none of the theoretical scenarios came out negatively. There wasn’t a moment that passed that he felt he was doing the wrong thing. The biggest thrill of all was the idea of what their future might hold. He somehow believed that life with Kakarot by his side would be an adventure. In fact, he knew that it would, and he was ever enticed by the idea.
“Today is the happiest of days,” Kakarot smiled at his brother, fidgeting with his clothes, “I’m so nervous! How I wish our father could be here!”
The Merger of the Kings is about to commence and Raditz stood with his brother just outside of the doors, accompanied by Banin and Tora, who was readying Kakarot to walk down the aisle in front of the entire Planet, and present him to the King. The smile couldn’t be wiped off of Raditz’s face as he looked at Kakarot proudly. He only said, “I know what father would say: ‘Don’t trip,’ or something like that.”
Kakarot laughed and swatted Raditz away, then the music began to play, and the doors to the gardens outside were opened and the sun blinded Kakarot and his company for just a moment before opening up the beauty of their planet as they took their first steps down the way. Kakarot’s eyes found Vegeta’s, and that was all he could see.
The rest of it was a blur. He remembers almost passing out when Vegeta bit him, and he remembers biting him back. They danced and laughed, ate, and played silly celebratory games, and he remembers Tora and his good humor and Raditz and his teasing, and Banin and his support, and at one point in time he could have sworn he heard his father’s voice cheering him and Vegeta on, and there was a second, deeper voice of a man, calling out to them proudly, but he didn’t know the voice, and he couldn’t be so sure he even heard it. It could have been all the drinks, or the music, or the distraction of one friend after the other, including the ever persistent Ivony and Jetome, who encouraged it all, all the while he was standing by the King’s side.
Vegeta’s tail had latched onto his, which was not something anyone attending had ever seen the King do, and his hand was seldom far from Kakarot’s arm, though they hardly had a moment of time to speak to one another. Men and women alike cooed over them and wished blessings on them of children and long life.
As he looked into his King’s eyes, he realized that he’s never even considered the fact that they would all call him King Kakarot now, not until he started hearing it and he thought it was funny sounding. He just thought of himself as Kakarot and Vegeta as Vegeta, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He smiled at the King and Vegeta kissed him, in no way shy about it. Kakarot found that he couldn’t stop laughing the whole day and night.
He found Raditz after some time and told his brother he had a desperate need to speak with him, so they left for just a few minutes to discuss whatever he had on his mind.
Kakarot told him, “Thank you, Raditz.”
The older brother didn’t understand, and he asked, “For what?”
Kakarot smiled, “It is because of you that any of this is possible, you know. I know how you used to pine over Vegeta and worry about whether or not he would ever be okay. You used to believe that your part to play in life was simply ordinary, but I disagree so completely! Do not feel average for one moment. You have inspired so many of our people, including his Highness. You, who have been through so much, and yet you carry on; who have kept your good sense and composure all of these years and found hope and happiness in spite of what others may have done to you, or what anyone might think of your decisions. You, who may think you are the least of us, you were really the best of us, brother. It is because of you that Vegeta and I are together, because of your gentle ways with him to keep him grounded, and your unique approach to your problems, you have taught us all so much. You were not left out of the loop as an intentional slight, and you have been my rock and his Majesty’s, for a long time now. Everyone needs a friend they can turn to who wishes only to see you smile. I wish that for you, and I wanted to thank you, before I forget.”
Raditz cried, then, because that is almost exactly what he asked Bardock about in his dream so many weeks ago, since he had not yet had the chance to ask Kakarot why they kept so many secrets from him, but he knows, now, that his struggles, which he had born for so long without complaint, have not been for nothing.
Epilogue
Vegeta shot up in bed from a strange dream and cried, “Father! Bardock! Damn you both! You get the last laugh!” He scowled, realizing his own ignorance at last.
It’s been a full five years since the day of Brolly’s destruction and Bardock’s death, and Vegeta found himself bound to the curious duties of parenthood, among other responsibilities. Children seemed to run amuck in the palace and if two of them were not his own, (not to mention Raditz and Banin’s three brats) then he was certain he wouldn’t have been able to remain calm, which he was, most days anyways.
Thank the goodness in the universe for Kakarot, who shared equally all the joys and struggles of their happy circumstances. Why did he feel sick, still, by his own happiness?
One young boy bound up onto the bed as his father sat up.
“No, Little Vegeta!” The King swatted the child away with his tail, sending him tumbling across the floor, bundled up in the blankets. “Not now! Not today! KAKAROT COME GET YOUR SON!” Vegeta cried, but it was in good humor, even in his frustration. The child only giggled.
Kakarot came into the bedroom on cue, smiling as brightly as ever. He had not been far from their room, which had been moved to another side of the castle, and vastly improved upon. In fact, he had sent the youngling to Vegeta to wake him up! He held their youngest little monster in his arms, Bardock, who was barely a toddler, while their four year old leapt up out of the blankets to greet him happily, crying out, “Papa, papa! He’s awake!” and the laughter in the child’s voice was contagious.
Kakarot shifted the youth he held into one arm before lifting the other into his other arm and he kissed them both dearly, before whispering, “Good job,” to LV, and to his lover he said, “What is the matter this afternoon, Vegeta? It’s such a beautiful day! You’ve napped long enough, I think.”
“Yes! I have! And now I am in need of some silence!”
Kakarot chuckled, “The sound of their laughter is what you should be focusing on.”
Vegeta smirked at Kakarot as he moved to get out of bed and answered, “Their laughter is all I ever hear!”
“Then you should be grateful that they are not crying!” Kakarot smiled.
Vegeta stood up and snickered at Kakarot, kissing him in between the two boys, who chattered and cackled at the sight of their parents so in love. Vegeta admitted, “I dreamt something crazy just now. I’ve finally realized what your father was trying to tell me and what my father truly meant; all these many things which I could never have known before.”
“What are you talking about?” Kakarot asked, confused. Vegeta rarely spoke of either of their parents, and so he knew very little about the things their father’s had discussed with him.
Vegeta smirked at him, and took the oldest child from his grasp, and the young thing climbed round him and latched onto his back as they walked. The younger child used his tail to grip Vegeta’s arm and he snuggled into Kakarot’s chest and wouldn’t let go of either. In that way, they were all connected as Vegeta began to head outside, since there was now an exit from their quarters directly to the gardens, made so because Kakarot so loved the outdoors. He took them all on a stroll through the lanes and he spoke freely to his mate. “Never before did I see the truth: How wonderful life is with you and these young fiery spirits around me,” he laughed, “Never before did I think I was worthy of such happiness.”
“Vegeta…” Kakarot sighed.
“No,” Vegeta shook his head, asking him to listen as he explained, “I told your father that I didn’t understand, and he told me that I would, and I told my father that I would rather not understand, and he told me that he hoped for my sake that I was would change my mind. Well, I now I must admit I was wrong, and although I’m still not certain this is the life I deserve, I am grateful for it, for once.”
Kakarot smiled at him, and hummed in his own happiness. Of course, he understands, for the life which he lives is not nearly so wholly insurmountable that it could be lost on him.
Vegeta turned to him and added, more to the point, “I never thought that I would be able to see or think past my own insecurities, my own downfalls; the many, many mistakes that I made over the years... I thought that they would plague me forever.”
“Vegeta,” Kakarot insisted, “Enough of this talk. I’m tired of recounting the past with you, I’m sure you know that, since I’ve said it many times before!”
“You are your father’s son,” Vegeta remarked, playfully, but still annoyed at not being heard.
Kakarot said, perceiving his seriousness on the topic, “Vegeta, I never once thought twice about how you were, or anything that you have done, because I know who you are. I don’t agree with everything that you’ve done, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t still love you, regardless. When will you let go of those insignificant details and focus on what’s right in front of you!?!”
“Now,” Vegeta chuckled at him, “Now I will, for I have no reason to cling to my guilt any longer and no desire for it. I have too many things looking up at me to distract me from maintaining a happy home and too many plans to look forward to. I have been more fortunate than my father, you see, because I get to share it all with you and I don’t have to have it from the world.”
Kakarot laughed and replied, “Do not think for a moment that either of our fathers had been displeased with their lot. I have found and read many letters, a book’s worth even, written back and forth between them to deny that idea many times over.” Vegeta looked astonished as Kakarot added, “Don’t you see? They saw the joy in everyday life, because they lived it, even if they did so unconventionally. They would want for us to do the same. It’s all any man or women or creature could ask for. A man cannot deny himself because of someone else’s ridiculous standards, nor can he deny himself of his own dreams. Just be thankful for who you are and the many blessings that you have, as I am to share this life with you.”
Vegeta smiled at him and began to laugh, “For such a simpleton you speak such simple truths… and had you been any other man I would surely not have listened! Alas, I hear you loud and clear. Now that I’ve been through Hell, I can recognize when I’m in Heaven. Man can make grievous mistakes and yet still change their ways.”
End.
