Chapter eighteen
Vegeta waited in the hallway for what felt like hours before Bardock emerged from the room holding the regeneration tanks.
"What took you so long?" Vegeta demanded.
"It was a close call, my king." Bardock said, wiping sweat from the back of his neck with a towel. "He lost a lot of blood, and there were a lot of bones to reset."
"And?" Vegeta said, through clenched teeth. He knew how close of a call it was. He was right beside Kakarot on their way to the medical bay when he crashed. They quickly pushed the king away and took Kakarot to a private room to stabilize him.
Vegeta had never been so afraid in his life.
"He'll be in there for a while, but he's going to make it." Bardock explained, smiling to his king. "He's a really lucky guy."
Vegeta glared at the scientist. "It wasn't luck. Kakarot is too strong and too stubborn to die."
Bardock didn't argue with Vegeta and just watched as the other man's face softened slightly.
"We should get back to Bulma. She and her mate have been alone long enough for the time being." Vegeta turned and walked away, heading toward the human's room.
As the door opened, Vegeta was pleased to see Bulma holding the hand of the raven-haired Earth woman. Bulma was always in better spirits when that banshe was here.
"You told me she would be SAFE." Chi Chi shouted and Vegeta entered. She immediately stood and walked over to the king, poking his chest repeatedly. "She could have been killed."
Vegeta glared down at the woman as his tail whipped behind him impatiently. "Kakarot saved her life, you're aware of that, correct?"
"Without you, she never would have been put in that situation in the first place, you arrogant swine!" Chi's face had become red with rage, and she was shaking.
"Chi Chi, please. I'm okay." Bulma pleaded from behind her wife.
Vegeta still didn't say a word. He knew what she was feeling. Hell, he was feeling it too.
"Say something!" Chi Chi shouted, pushing on his shoulders. "You owe me an explanation!"
After a hefty sigh, Vegeta's gaze connected with Chi Chi's. "I never meant for any of this to happen. I should have nipped it in the bud when I had the chance. You have my apologies, Mrs. Briefs." Vegeta spoke softly, but walked to Bulma while Chi Chi was still in shock and kneeling by her bedside. "How're you feeling?"
"Never mind me, Vegeta! Did you find him?" Bulma asked, nearly shouting. He knew that Bulma and his mate had bonded on a special level, considering their shared experiences and time together.
"Yes, he's in a regeneration tank."
Bulma's expression became dark. "That bad?"
Vegeta scoffed at her. "It was far too close." He stood.
"How is he now?" Bulma asked, looking fearful of the answer. "I mean, mentally."
Tension racked Vegeta's body. "He wasn't very coherent when we found him. I haven't really spoken with him yet."
Nodding, Bulma cast her gaze down. "What do you think? Do you think he'll be okay?"
Vegeta shrugged. "At this point, it doesn't much matter."
"How can you say that? He's your husband!"
"He's my mate." Vegeta corrected. "That's precisely why it doesn't matter. He's alive, and at this point, that's all I can ask."
A small smile curled Bulma's lips. "I guess you're right."
Bardock walked in with a scowl on his face, obviously unnerved with the recent events. "How are the contractions, Bulma?"
"Oh, they aren't terrible." Bulma rubbed over her sore belly. "He's just ready to make a break for it."
Bardock nodded. "We won't be able to wait until Kakarot wakes up. It's time."
Bulma nodded solumnly. "I know. I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
Within the next twenty minutes, the hospital room was transformed into a sterile operating room.
After the incision was made, Vegeta remained in the corner of the room. He had no comfort to offer Bulma that Chi Chi hadn't already given. Now, it was just a matter of time.
The wail that echoed through the quiet room caught Vegeta's attention. He rushed over to the bleeding woman and a bloody, screaming infant.
A healthy, loud little girl.
Bardock wiped off the child and handed her to her father.
"Congratulations, King Vegeta."
He quickly retreated, tending to Bulma. Once he had her sewed up, she would be placed in a regeneration tank for healing. The pregnancy had taken a large toll on her little human body.
Vegeta looked at the tiny infant in his arms. Her eyes were closed and she'd already fallen back asleep. Her hair was long, a lot like Kakarot's brother, Raditz. It framed her beautiful little face, and her power was immense for only being moments old.
She was perfect.

Kakarot dreamed that he was swimming in a lake back on Earth. The cool water settled around him and lifted the weight of his heavy limbs. He was so tired, but the water calmed him. Though he was still in pain, it was much less that it had been before. All that was left was the ache of stiff muscles.
Suddenly, the water around him was gone. Kakarot jolted awake with the shock of the new environment. His eyes looked around quickly, trying to assess the threats.
His eyes met with the stark features that were his mate. He relaxed a little, but said nothing. He was still too tired.
"Alright, Kakarot. We're gonna move you. Don't you dare panic." Bardock said.
Kakarot's lips curved into a smile at the phrase Vegeta had said to him so long ago. He helped his father move him as best he could, but he doubted he was helping.
Vegeta watched attentively as Bardock laid Kakarot out onto the bed, replacing his clothes. He noticed the new scars that cascaded Kakarot's torso, and felt himself wince.
Once Bardock left, Kakarot was laying with a blanket over top of him, still trying to gain his bearings and remember how the hell he ended up here. He didn't have to push himself far before the memories assaulted him. Zarbon, Bulma, and Vegeta. Vegeta is a super Saiyan.
He looked over to his mate, who had taken a seat beside him with a bundle of blankets in his arms. It appeared that Vegeta was talking to the bundle.
Oh, dear god. He'd missed it.
Kakarot clenched his jaw and tried to control his anger. Looking over to his mate who was quietly soothing the baby, it made it easier to keep calm. They were safe.
"Wh-" Kakarot spoke with a rasp and tear to his voice. "Where is Bulma?"
Vegeta smiled. "She's recovering in a regeneration tank. She'll be out shortly." He looked to his mate, then back to the child. "I should have known."
"You should have known?"
Vegeta turned to show Kakarot the slumbering face of their daughter. "Aizielle, Princess of All Saiyans."
Kakarot couldn't stop looking at the small round face. She was perfect. He felt a strong protectiveness, even greater than before. Seeing her there, looking so peaceful and happy, it tore at his heart strings.
Vegeta marveled at the way Kakarot completely relaxed. Truly, this child would be something to reckon with. She'd have both of her fathers wrapped around her little finger. She already did.
"I can't believe she's here." Kakarot said, his smile softening as he admired Aizielle.
"I know you wanted to be there, but we couldn't wait any longer." Vegeta apologized, standing and walking to the side of Kakarot's bed. "Are you feeling well enough to hold her?"
Kakarot sat up quickly, holding out his arms. Vegeta laid the fragile infant in his arms and watched as Kakarot got lost in her once again. "She's beautiful."
"Bulma was very happy when she was born healthy. Bardock was a bit concerned."
Kakarot nodded knowingly. He still felt like he couldn't look Vegeta in the eye. He felt used and disgusting. It was almost like when he had first arrived. He wanted to grovel at Vegeta's feet and beg for forgiveness. It was no secret that Kakarot had chosen to stay, and he was sure that Vegeta wasn't happy about it.
After a few hours in the hospital, Bardock moved Kakarot back to his and Vegeta's chambers, along with their little bundle of joy.
"We have a ceremony tonight to introduce her to the kingdom. Bulma will be recieving a metal of honor for her sacrifices, so both she and the banshe will be there." Vegeta explained, passing Kakarot a bottle.
Kakarot slid the nipple into the wailing infants mouth and watched as she started to gulp it down in earnest. "That should be fun."
Vegeta watched as his mate fed their daughter, but the question Bulma had asked him buzzed in his head.
"How are you feeling?" Vegeta asked, purposely looking away from Kakarot.
"Well, it's nice to not have any broken bones anymore." Kakarot said, chuckling. It was obvious that he didn't realize what Vegeta was saying.
"That's not entirely what I was getting at, Kakarot." Vegeta spoke softly, walking over to kneel by the chair where his mate was seated. Kakarot looked at him with dread in his eyes. "I know you've healed physically." Vegeta paused, thinking of how best to approach this. "I just haven't been able to breach the bond at all. I have no idea how you're feeling, but I just have to know that you're okay."
Kakarot didn't look at his mate for a moment. "I won't lie to you, Vegeta, I'm not really doing too great, but I made my bed. I'll lay in it."
Vegeta's stomach tied in a knot. "Kakarot, you can't possibly-"
"I made that choice. I know you don't want to hear it, but I did."
"You wanted Aizielle and Bulma to be safe. That's not the same as laying with someone."
"It was my choice to stay. I knew what was going to happen." Kakarot said, moving the baby up to burp her over his shoulder. He still wouldn't look Vegeta in the eye and it was frustrating the king to no end.
"Would you just look at me, Kakarot?" Vegeta growled through clenched teeth.
The tone startled Kakarot, forcing his submissive side to intervene. He looked over to his mate, and the pain shown in his eyes. The emotions hit full force and he didn't expect it. Water jumped to his eyes and a knot clogged his throat.
Sympathy washed over Vegeta. "Why didn't you just tell me that you weren't okay?"
"Because I'm fine!" Kakarot said pointedly. He was pretty proud of keeping his voice level.
Vegeta rolled his eyes and took the sleeping baby from his mate so he could lay her in her crib. "I'm not asking that you talk to me, but don't lie to me. I'll never believe that you choosing to stay there was anything but a protective measure. If you truly believe any of this was your fault, offer me a rational explanation why. Otherwise, I'm going to continue to believe that Zarbon raped you and that not a single bit of this was what you wanted."
Vegeta decided that a nice cold shower was in order. Standing under the spray, it did nothing to calm his nerves. He kept getting angrier and more agitated as he tried to branch through the bond and kept hitting the goddamned wall that Kakarot built. Frustration bubbled inside of him and he couldn't stop wishing that Zarbon hadn't died so fast. What he would have given to have humiliated that bastard. He wished he could have tortured him, and make him sorry he ever looked at his Kakarot.
Vegeta was drying himself when he heard a knock. "What is it, Kakarot?"
"Bulma's here." His voice was quiet, almost... submissive.
God, Vegeta hated when Kakarot did this. He completely regresses to his slavery days whenever he thought Vegeta was angry with him.
Ignoring his annoyance, he finished dressing and exited the bathroom to find Bulma holding Aizielle. It was a beautiful sight. The woman had worked so hard for this.
"She's so beautiful, Vegeta." Bulma said. She was a little pale, but appeared normal otherwise. Her mate stood over her shoulder, smiling at the baby.
Vegeta nodded and looked at Kakarot, who was sitting on the bed, staring off into space with a somber look on his face.
It really hurt to see him this way.
As the night went on, Bulma bonded a bit more with Aizielle and Kakarot seemed to look more sad by the minute. Something has to be done.
