Chapter
18
His bed was warm. Moist
stains on the sheets here and there. His heart was cold. His bed. Mouse hole.
Shelter for the big mighty cat. Yes, it had turned out the way he had feared: a
dreadful game of cat and mouse. Big, mighty cat that held its prey in its claws
until it was tired of playing. Eating his soul, sucking away his life.
Keeping track of time had become so futile. Time was nothing
anymore, only something that stood between him and the day his master would
decide to set him free and end this twisted blackmail. All days had become
alike, the only way he could’ve known what day it was, was by the newspaper he
got every morning from Doctor J, or the news on the TV or radio. But he didn’t
touch either of those. He simply didn’t care
anymore what day it was. What was the use anyway? Then
one day in the week Doctor J didn’t come by to pick him up. Only then did he realize that it
was Saturday and that he had survived through
another week of misery and endless waiting.
It had
been two weeks since Doctor J had started the mental breakdown, and by now his pain went far beyond the boundaries of what he
could bear. He had made desperate attempts to
talk to Doctor J about the situation, but since he hadn’t done any of his
paperwork for days, Doctor J refused to listen
to his reasoning and just acted like he wasn't there when he was talking to him. Moments like
that were the hardest to contain his control towards Doctor J. It was easy to
show the old man his middle finger, but he knew all too well that the farce of
Perfect Soldier would irrevocably falter, if not
scatter if he were foolish enough to do such a
thing.
“You take your punishment
quite well,” Doctor J had said one day in the third week, maybe Wednesday or
Thursday. “I’m willing to lighten it a bit. From now on you can go home and
come to work on your own, and you can have your 'phone
and cell phone back.”
Joy? Happiness? He could’ve
felt it. And of course he had felt it, tons of it. But Heero wouldn’t have been
Heero if he hadn't found anything suspicious
about it. His happiness only lasted for a very
brief moment though as he soon figured out what
the hidden meaning behind his sudden release was.
It was nothing but a devil disguised as an
angel, a sweet lollipop with venomous poison inside. Ah, Doctor J thought he
would buy it. But wait, he would see just how many wits he still had. He was
desperate, but not stupid. Seeing Duo was still unacceptable, although it would
be very difficult not to pick up the 'phone and call him to come over and hump like crazy.
Surely Duo would notice that he had part of his
freedom back, but it shouldn’t be that hard to make him understand that caution was still required, right?
No, for now, he still had to
keep up the pretense of his life the way it was.
Not being with Duo in his private life and only
seeing him at work the few times Doctor J was gone;
however hard that might be. Think of him in his bed. Try out the most crazy
positions in his head, like now. Ow, strained a
muscle.
~*~*~*~
Three seconds he gave
himself. Three seconds before he would find himself being hugged and kissed and
crushed against the wall by Duo in a position not suitable for younger children’s
eyes, and especially not for Doctor J’s eyes. It might’ve been coincidence, but
Doctor J happened to arrive at work the very same moment Heero arrived, and
Heero grumbled something that sounded like “paranoid
old lunatic”.
He went into the building,
closely followed by his supervisor and instead of the elevator he took the
stairs, sprinting up to the third floor in an attempt to shake Doctor J off, but the
man was in surprisingly
good condition for his age. How old was he anyway? Seventy? Eighty? Not
according to the pace he set while chasing Heero now with his obsessed mind. However, when Heero
came to the top and turned into the corridor, he
hid behind the corner. Paranoid old lunatic.
“Didn’t I see Heero driving into the parking lot just now?” Duo asked Heidi, who
was currently engaged in a fight with the sleeve of her jacket.
“Don’t know, honey. Would
you help me?”
Duo pulled the teasing
sleeve over Heidi’s hand and hurried to the door of his office. “I’m gonna take
a look.” He headed for the elevator, but turned his head as he heard Quatre’s
voice.
“Hey,
Duo, how are you?” the little blonde smiled. “Say, we could be mistaken, but Trowa said he just saw Heero down in the parking lot and he
was alone.”
“Really?”
“Yes,” Trowa nodded.
The doors of the elevator
chimed open and Duo’s disappointment grew when
not Heero, but Relena stepped out of the little car.
“Why good morning, miss
Peacecraft,” Duo said, unable to resist a
pretended smirk.
“Why
are you dawdling here? Come on now, get to work,” she said haughtily.
“Good morning, miss Relena.
You’re looking fine today,” Quatre cajoled. “Did you get a new haircut? New
scarf? How pretty.”
“Kiss ass,” Duo sniggered.
“If only you knew!”
“Quatre!!”
“I’m sorry, Trowa. Slipped
my mouth.”
Nevertheless, it had the
desired 'yikes'
effect on Relena and followed by their bursts of
laughter, she quickly hightailed it.
From the corner of his eye,
Duo suddenly saw Heero cautiously sneaking from behind the corner. “Hee-chan!
What a surprise to see you!” he yelled, throwing his arms around him. “So, the
old lunatic’s not with you? Or, has he set you
free?”
A whole lot of different
feelings had been swirling and bubbling inside of Heero. Hope, desire, anger.
Now it was unmistakably anxiety and he had to summon all his willpower to do what he was about to do, something he never would’ve
done if he knew Doctor J was nowhere around. His only option to save his own hide was to
momentarily crush the boy’s heart and strike both him and Heidi with surprise… and hope he would forgive him for it. He grabbed Duo by his throat, not in a killer’s
grip, but hard enough so he would know it was serious, and pushed him against
the wall. His eyes were ice-blue flames and his voice was a low growl as he
bent over to Duo's ear.
“If you ever do that again,
I swear to God, I will kill you,” he hissed.
Duo, please don’t look so hurt. I don’t mean it, really. Still, a few quick whispered words to reassure him.
“He’s watching us. Play
along with me.” His hand lowered and on its way down, he
slipped a little piece of paper into Duo’s pocket, unnoticeable to Doctor J. Then he let
him go again and went to his office without saying another word.
With his mouth open, his
eyes big and his heart hammering in his chest, Duo
watched him go and then felt inside his pocket.
Heidi jerked him inside the office before he got the chance to be stupid enough
to go and read it right in front of Doctor J’s eyes.
“Heidi!” he yelped.
She slammed the door shut
and moved towards him. “Surely, you’re not gonna read it where Doctor J can see
it?!” she scolded.
“But I… I was confused,” he
stammered.
“I can understand that, but
you heard what he said. Doctor J was watching.”
“Oh, you heard that too?”
“Yes, but only just. I’m
pretty sure Doctor J didn't hear it. Now, what
does it say?”
He read out loud.
Duo,
I
knew you would be the first to welcome me. Yes, I have a part of my freedom
back. He doesn’t lock me up at home anymore, but still at the office. Though
this might sound like good news, it’s not. I know he’s testing me. So if I, by
any chance, treat you a little harsh sometimes, it’s solely for that reason. I
still love you. God, I love you madly and I can’t wait for the day we can do
all the things we want. But for now I still can’t pay you a visit, and for the
love of God, don’t visit me at home either. By the way, how’s that plan of
yours going? Still working on that? And have you seen my gun? Can’t find it
anywhere. Hope I’ll find it soon, though. Doctor J, you know.
Bye
now
Heero
“So he’s testing him,” Heidi
said. “That explains why he grabbed you by your throat just now. Does it hurt?”
“No, not that much,” Duo
said, feeling his throat. “But still, that guy doesn’t know his own strength.”
“And what about a plan?”
“Oh, haven’t I told you
about that yet? I’m gonna try to steal Doctor J’s coat. I’ve asked Quatre,
Trowa and Wufei to help me with that. We concocted a plan together. That coat
contains everything to scare and torment Heero, but without all that, he’s just
a helpless old man.”
“Ooh, that so exciting! Can
I help? Maybe we can do it together!” she yelled.
“Yeah, maybe that’s a good
idea. Heero said he’s pretty strong.” He folded the paper and put it back in
his pocket. “It’s good to know Doctor J doesn’t drop him off at home anymore.
Now I can give him his gun back.”
“That’s right, you still
have that. He left that in Trowa’s and Quatre’s office, didn’t he?”
“Yeah, because he had to
hurry that much. Dropped it, probably.”
“But in his letter he said
you couldn’t pay him a visit.”
“How else do you expect me
to give it back to him? It won’t take long. And he said he wanted it back as
soon as possible, right? Fat chance Doctor J’s gonna be there at that very moment.”
“But…”
“Nah! Don’t try to talk me
round. Tonight, after work, I’m going over there, period,” he said stubbornly.
She opened her mouth again
to say something. Going into discussion with Duo? Lost before she even started.
She sagged her shoulders and closed her mouth again. “Alright, but I’m going
with you,” she muttered.
“Alright.”
~*~*~*~
Duo was pleased and
exuberant like a toddler at the four o’clock school bell to leave the office that
evening. He was going to see his love again and really
see him this time. Not pinned against the wall again, but hugged and kissed and
who knows, maybe fucked? At least, that’s what he hoped.
The ride to Heero’s house had only taken about ten or fifteen
minutes, still Heidi had managed to drive him nuts. She happened to be firmly
convinced of the fact that it wasn’t a good idea to go over there. 'He will be angry with you, Doctor J will see us.' But there was no way she could make him change his
mind and turn back the car. She might as well
have been talking to the car seat she was sitting in.
The car stopped in front of
Heero’s house with a happy humming. Duo got out with his usual swing, gun in
his hand. What was that yelling? Nine?
“Nine! Nine, come back
dammit! You stupid, fucking… Come back here this very instant!”
With a stupid face, Duo
turned his head in the direction of the yells. A pretty outrageous dog came
running towards him, behind him a desperate Heero chasing
the fleeing animal. In spite of the attempts to catch his pet, the dog
sprang over the fence and hit a dumbfounded Duo full on his chest, causing him
to fall backwards and dropping the gun to the
ground.
“Duo!” Heidi panicked. The
dog dug its claws in Duo’s clothes and ripped them apart, hungry for the flesh
underneath them. Heidi grabbed the collar of Nine, which indeed seemed to be
his name, but the massive animal didn’t move an inch.
“Heidi, give me the gun!”
Heero said from behind the fence.
“What? No! Don’t shoot him!”
“I’m not gonna shoot him!
Just give it to me!”
If it wasn’t for the
perilous situation Duo was in now, she probably wouldn’t have done it, but even
if he did shoot the dog, hell, Duo was more
important than him, so she picked up the gun and lay it in his outstretched
hand. Then she moved away from the dog, ears covered and eyes squeezed shut. To
her surprise, no gunshot followed. Instead he used the safety on his gun to get the dog under
control. Two short clicks and then another one and as if by magic, the
dog let go of Duo. Suddenly very meekly, it made for the railing so Heero could lead him back into the garden like a
tame little lamb.
“What am I gonna do with
you?” Heero sighed, shaking his head.
Duo stumbled to his feet and awkwardly looked down at his torn
clothes. “Yeah, it’s quite a dog, jumping me like that,” he agreed with him.
“I meant you,” Heero said. “I
thought I told you in my letter not to come here. You did notice I slipped a
letter in your pocket? Of course,” he said, slapping his hand on his forehead. “Otherwise
you wouldn’t know Doctor J doesn’t drop me off anymore. Heero Yuy, when did you
become so negligent?”
“But… I… In your letter you said that you wanted your gun back as soon as
possible and Trowa gave
it to me, didn’t know what else to do
with it. You left it there when forcing the lock
of their office, remember?”
“Yes, I do now that you
mention it,” Heero said amused. “Anyway, thank you very much for bringing it
back to me and I apologize for Nine attacking
you. It won’t happen again. At least, not as long as I have my gun. He’s
trained with the clicks of the safety, you see. I have figured out several
codes, and each code is a different command. He’s been unmanageable for a whole
week.”
“I see,” Duo said, having recovered from his fall. There was a tickling sensation somewhere in
the bottom of his belly, a certain desire and he bent over the fence to Heero. “What
do you say, love? Now that I’m here… a quick lay on the backseat of my car?”
Behind him he heard a whoop
of excitement from Heidi, and Heero’s face fell into pleasantly surprised
folds. Still he shook his head. “Duo, you know I love you, but you really have
to go. We can’t take the risk and you’d better
take care of those scratches you’ve got there,” he said, nodding to his chest.
The trademark Duo Maxwell
pout. “Alright,” he sighed, turning away.
That was too easy. He knew
Duo would turn back and he didn’t mind. Against
his better judgment he was hoping for a kiss. He waited, watched Duo slowly
shuffling away, stopping, looking behind. Can
I? His eyes asked. Go ahead,
Heero’s nod said.
Duo jerked his head back and
pressed his lips on the one's of his boyfriend. The latter kissed back, a
little deeper, little more passionate than he had intended, until their tongues
were snugly in each other’s mouth and had the time of their lives in there. Duo’s
battered skin touched the fence and he quickly pulled back.
“Aw…” he groaned. “Darling,
I hope I’ll see you again really soon. Bye bye.” He waved his hand and got into
his car, his face painful, both from the wounds on his chest and from the
goodbye.
Heero watched both of them
drive away and heaved a sigh of relief, yet his
heart felt heavy. “Bye bye,” he said.
