Outlaw
Chapter 19
Heero glanced back at the cabin as the group rode away. He frowned. Hilde had some crazy ideas and this probably was the craziest of them all. There was no way Treize was going to negotiate with them over this. He didn’t want to leave there alone with Maxwell. He had no qualms about Duo keeping her out of harms way but he tended to go off half cocked sometimes forgetting the consequences and getting himself and everyone else in trouble in the process. He sighed, Duo had a good heart. If and when this was all over He would make Zechs tell him that his sister was alive. Duo needed to know this information.
He knew Treize and his men were close if not already at the cabin. He was reluctant to leave and tried to stall the leaving.
He glanced around the small group around him. He could sense the nervousness in all of them. Trowa looked up at him and said nothing. WuFei jerked on the reins of his horse, trying to calm the animal down. Zechs never said a word, just held his horse in a regal pose. Quatre turned to him and asked. “How long will we wait?”
“Treize has to make the first move then we will act. “
Quatre nodded and looked over toward the cabin.
Relena edged her closer to Heero’s and looked at him.
“Are we leaving or are your waiting for something to happen?”
“Waiting.”
“What will we do, then?’
‘You will do nothing.”
“What?”
“You and Sally will stay up here out of harms way.”
“What?!” Came Sally’s protest. ”I will do no such thing!”
WuFei glared at her but said nothing.
“What if some one gets hurt, who’s going to tend to their wounds? You?” she asked as she pointed WuFei. “You?” She asked as she looked over at Heero.
Neither man said anything as she concluded with “I thought so. I’m going.”
Relena nodded. “If Sally goes, so do I.”
After that , the conversation waned until gunshots split the morning air.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Hilde listened carefully to Treize as He and Duo talked. She snorted. It wasn’t much of a conversation on either side. The negotiations weren’t much either. They wanted their lives for the exchange of two jade statues , some opium, and a few uncut gem stones. They didn’t have much to bargain with. Treize didn’t care about their lives. She wasn’t even sure he cared about what Duo had taken. It was his pride he cared about . Duo had stolen from him and that hurt. Hilde smiled . She had got the drop on him and he didn’t like that at all. This was all about pride and only pride. Hilde knew of an incident that didn’t set well with the man. It had happened before he had come to their neck of the woods. Something she had heard he wanted revenge for. Something he would kill for. Power always corrupts , always. She looked up from the table as Duo slipped back in. He held in his hands the two items of the negotiations.
“He ain’t gonna go for it, Hilde. He would rather see us both dead.”
She nodded, “Then it’s time for plan b.”
Duo looked at the woman sitting so calmly in front of him. “You ha pla plan b?”
She chuckled and said , “No, not really, it’s more of a now we have to wait and see what happens next.”
‘You never really had a plan did you?
“Nope. Flying by the seat of my pants.”
Duo’ s hand went to his face and he ran it over his eyes. “We’re gonna die here, you know that right?”
She looked up at him as he set the statues on the table, shaking his head. “Hilde, Did you think this through at all? He’ll kill us!”
“I have a plan , Duo. Do you really think we are alone out here?”
He looked at her and frowned, then nodded. ”You sent everyone away.”
“Do you think for one minute Heero would leave us alone out here?”
He looked at her, then shook his head. “You are honestly relying on Heero? Honestly? What if he says fuck it and leaves?”
She shrugged. “then we’ll have to improvise I guess.”
“You guess? You guess!! Hilde, this could get us killed! Or worse captured by Treize. You don’t want that at all.” he involuntarily shivered at the thought.
“Relax, Duo. We won’t be abandoned. “
He flopped down on the chair next to her. “Ok, what ever you say. I guess if you trust that guy, ok.”
Hilde leaned over and looked at her lover,” I know you two have had bad blood.”
“Yeah that’s putting it mildly. He’s only threatened to kill me twice, to my face. I wonder how many times he has wanted to behind my back?”
Hilde said nothing and hoped that this time her trust in Heero would not be misplaced.
She stood and stepped close to Duo to place a kiss on his lips when a single gun shot and the sound of a bullet thudding into the house made her stiffen.
“Fuck.” Came Duo’s soft reply to the increasing sound of the firing and the impact of the bullets on the side of the house.
“It’s started.” She shouted as she ran toward a window, pulling a spare gun from the table. Duo followed reluctantly behind her.
“Hilde this is useless. He’s going to kill us and that is all there is to it.”
She turned to him, and glared. “If You want to lay down and die do it, but I’ll be damned if I’ll give up with out a fight, this child I’m carrying deserves that much.”
Duo said nothing as he knelt down beside her and hung his head. “I’m sorry.”
She smiled and reached for his face. “It’s ok , I understand your fear. I know what he put you through.”
His hand reached up and grasped her fingertips as the caressed his face. The tender moment was shattered as a bullet passed through the window and showered them with glass. They both ducked and covered and raised the guns they held to the window and began to fire.
~~~~~~
Trant stopped his horse and grinned. That was gun fire he thought as he turned to Middi.
“Come on! Let’s go back!”
Middi shook her head. “You go, but I’m thru. I’m heading out of here.”
“He’ll find ya, you know. “
She shrugged and started to ride away.
“HE’LL FIND YA!” Came his departing scream. She waved her hand as to show him she didn’t care at all.
“it doesn’t matter. I have a feeling any one involved in this is going to be quite dead when it’s all over, anyway.” She said softly as she kicked the sides of her horse and moved away from the conflict. “Maybe the Texas rangers would have a position for me.” She said out loud as she disappeared into the West.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The air was deafening with the sound of gunfire. Every window in the cabin was broken, pieces of glass littered the floor. Duo and Hilde huddled under different windows firing out into the yard. Treize’s men didn’t seem to ever stop to reload. It was a constant barrage of gunfire. The bullets thumped repeatedly into the house, but never made it in unless through a window.
Duo looked at the small piles of bullets in front of him. He glanced up at Hilde and grimaced.
“I only have a few more left, Hilde.”
“Yeah, me too, “ came her reply as she fingered a half a dozen or so bullets.
“You may be right about all this Duo. Looks like my trust in Heero was ……….”
Suddenly to both of their surprise a shout brought their attention to the window.
They could see several riders barreling down the hill, heading for the cabin. More gun fire and shouts made the air full of sound.
Hilde peeked her head over a window sill only to have Duo pull her down.
“Are you crazy! With all those bullets flying around , you could get hit!”
“I know but I want to see what’s happening!”
“I know but it’s not safe!”
Hilde sighed knowing Duo was right.
~~~~~
Treize’s men looked up as the group of riders rode down the slope at them. Several panicked and ran. Treize shouted out after them but they continued to run. his threats of death fell on deaf ears. He turned his firing to the riders coming toward him and his remaining men. The air was full of gunshots and shouting. It was pure pandemonium.
In the chaos a lone rider rode up to the house and dismounted. Trant eased his way around the back and to a broken window. He pushed the broken glass out of the way, not caring if it made noise. There was so much noise out side who would hear ,anyway. He stepped in over the sill and dropped to the floor, the glass crunching under his feet. He would make Maxwell pay for this. Then he would have that woman. He grinned at that thought. She would watch her lover die and then she would have the pleasure of dieing by his hands , too, after he had some fun with her. He moved quickly to the main room and stepped in. He grinned at what he saw. His targets were huddled under a window, unaware that he was there. He took one step forward and raised his gun just as Duo turned to look at him. He grinned and aimed at the man on the floor in front of him. He was so intent on his goal he didn’t see Duo’s quick action draw or even hear the gun fire. All he felt was a sharp sting as the bullet entered his chest. He was still grinning as the blood covered his chest and he fell face first to the floor, his gun firing as he went down.
Duo jerked as the bullet from Trant’s gun grazed his leg and embedded itself into the wall.
Outside the firing had started to die down when Wu Fei’s voice came out loud and clear.
“You have no honor!” He cried out as he saw Treize aim at Sally and shoot her. Sally jerked in the saddle but did not fall. She reached for her arm as WuFei charged Treize. Shouting and firing at the same time, Treize did the same. It was all most like a battle between two knights. Everyone one knew one would fall, and one did.
Treize fell to the snow, his gun flying from his nerveless fingers and a small smile on his face. “ I die at the hands of a man of great honor, Chang WuFei.”
Wu Fei’s eyes got round as he dismounted his horse and ran to the fallen man. He blinked as he looked down at the dieing man.
“And now I die.” and with those words, he became silent.
WuFei stared at the dead man for a few moments then stood, his eyes searching for the woman that was his soul mate. He found her sitting on her horse holding her arm. He moved quickly to her and reached for her. She shook her head and smiled at him.
“I’m ok. It’s nothing serious.”
He pulled her from the horse and started to lead her to the cabin.
The lady sat silently on her horse and said nothing. Relena came up to her and looked at her. “what will you do now?”
“I… have nothing. I have lost all.”
Relena reached out and slapped her. “You must live! Do not add another tragedy to this one!”
The lady looked at Relena and smiled, but said nothing.
Heero rode up beside Relena and looked at her. She looked over at him and nodded letting him know she was alright. He then turned and rode toward the house.
Heero reached the house and dismounted. He stepped toward the door just as it opened. He stepped back as Duo and Hilde stepped out. He examined them both, noting the blood on Duo’s leg. He looked at him and Duo just said. “Trant.”
Hilde looked up as WuFei was dragging a reluctant Sally toward the door.
“I’m all right! It’s just a flesh wound!”
He looked at Hilde who pulled the reluctant woman into the house and proceeded to check the wound on her arm. She turned to WuFei and nodded. “It’s just as she said, I’ll bind it and then let’s go home.”
He nodded and let a small breath out.
Une had got to work gathering up the wounded and the dead, including the body of Treize.
“What will you do now, Lady Une?”
She shrugged. “I shall retreat to Treize’s fortress for now and then I’ll have to see.”
Relena nodded. “Good luck to you. Please come to visit us sometime.”
The woman nodded absently, as she watched them ride away.
Epilogue:
Approximately 9 months later.
Duo stood impatiently out side the bedroom door. He was pacing back and forth.
“Duo, please sit down. You’re making me nervous. Everything will be alright. Sally can handle this you know. “
He nodded and reluctantly came over to the table Relena was sitting at.
In the months past they had all become good friends. Heero even warming up to Duo and becoming close friends. Duo had found his sister and found she had gotten away from the brothel and married. The reunion was a happy one. She was so happy he was alive and well and vowed to visit soon.
Lady Une had returned to the town in the spring and opened up a new agency and hired a young woman who had been turned down by the rangers. Une saw potential even if the foolish men in the rangers didn’t.
Trowa and Dorothy’s family had grown and their business was flourishing as was everyone else’s in the small town including Quatre and Catherine’s. And soon there would be a new addition to the small group of friends.
Duo sat down only to jump to his feet again as Sally came out of the room, wiping her hands.
She nodded. ”Yes, everything’s fine and you can go in.”
He rushed past her and stepped into the room. On the bed was his wife and two small bundles next to her. Hilde looked up and smiled. He made his way over to her and sat beside her on the bed. He eyed the two small babies wrapped up in the blankets.
“Twins?”
She nodded then said. “Yep, I should have know you would double up on me . You just can’t do things once.”
He grinned sheepishly at her as she handed him one of the bundles.
Duo Looked at the little face as the child looked up at him. It’s violet colored eyes blinked back at him. He looked up at Hilde as she held the other bundle.
“Yes, Duo, we have a boy and girl.” She held up the other bundle and he saw a pair of deep blue eyes looking back at him.
“I have the boy?” he asked as he looked at the baby in his arms.
“Nope, that’s the girl. Names ,Duo?”
He shrugged, “You?”
“How about Casey? And what about Loren?”
Duo nodded. “Those work for me.”
“So we have Casey, “ She said as she held up the boy and then, pointed to Duo’s bundle “And is is Loren.”
He nodded.
Hilde sighed and then said, “Why don’t you introduce for children to our friends. I’m going to take a small nap. It was a lot of work.”
He nodded and took the children into the other room. Hilde snuggled down into the blankets and closed her eyes. She smiled as she drifted off into the sleep she richly deserved. Soon it would be very hectic in the Maxwell household.
The end…
There may be a sequel in the future but don’t expect it soon.
