(…) Author’s thoughts
Kakarot woke from a small sound, but couldn’t tell where it was. He thought it was nothing at first until he heard it again and then a little louder. He stood and reached for his sword and held it close to himself, just in case. He stood still and listened for the sound again. Something seemed to be rustling around the abandoned home, instead of just in one place. Was it another ambush? Or was the place falling apart? His silent questions were answered when a small hole in the ceiling came falling in and a figure along with it. Before the debris could settle, the black-clad figure came at him as Kakarot just barely blocked the attack. Soon, a couple more assassins came crashing in as he pushed off his offender and headed towards the exit. As soon as he made it outside, a few more were waiting for him and leaped from the roof to the ground in front of him, blocking his escape.
He turned around as the other assassins followed him out of the broken house and surrounded him on all sides. Kakarot stood his ground and held his sword in front of him as he scanned at all his enemies. Eight assassins covered all sides of him and slowly closed around him as he thought of his next move. He suddenly leapt into the air and landed a few feet away as two assassins came at him. He blocked one of them and kicked the other away, but as soon as he pushed them back, two more took their place and proceeded to attack him. He quickly blocked their attacks and dodged an attack that was aimed for his torso, then pushed himself away from them to get more room. As he pushed himself away, he somehow managed to back into a blade as it swiftly cut his bare side. He didn’t think to don his shirt when he woke, but even if he did, he’d have to worry about sewing it together again. He gasped at the unexpected attack and quickly turned around to slash his attacker down from the shoulder, across his torso, and to his other side. The assassin screamed in pain before hitting the ground as Kakarot turned around to his previous attackers, who were quickly making their way to him.
Just before they got to him, he dodged to the side and just as he did, another assassin was aiming for his previous position and missed. However, one assassin managed to get lucky as his target came his way and swung his sword. Kakarot gasped in pain as a blade managed to pierce his left shoulder. He swung his sword to the right and managed to cut his attacker in half as the blade slowly left his shoulder. He yelped at the slowly receding object and took a moment to pull himself together. Unfortunately, he only had a couple seconds as three more charged him from the front and the others were no where to be seen. Suddenly wanting to move, he made use of his feet as he tried outrunning his opponents.
Kakarot decided to aim for the trees and leaped from a rock to a lower branch, then a higher one and continued working his way from tree to tree and branch to branch as his attackers followed. He decided to get more creative with his speed and landed on a trunk of a tree for a brief moment before suddenly back tracking from where he came and quickly took out three more assassins. The others dodged once they saw his change of tactics and dispersed to the sides. Kakarot suddenly changed direction again while the others got a hold of their bearings. Just before one landed on a branch, Kakarot quickly cut the branch, causing the assassin to plummet to the ground. The remaining two decided to take their chance and leap at him, but Kakarot saw the attack and threw his sword, imbedding it into a tree trunk next to a higher branch ahead of him, and leaped towards one of the higher branches and grabbed it as the two assassins flew past. Kakarot swung a little for momentum and managed to land on a lower branch and ran over to retrieve his sword. (This would make a great movie ^^ …only better hopefully hehe)
Sword in hand, he faced his attackers who seemed to be standing still. All caught their breath for a moment as the assassins moved and Kakarot along with them. Kakarot zigzagged higher into the trees and managed to get a good vantage point before plummeting and swiftly cutting off an arm, then put the assassin out of his misery and beheaded him. Kakarot watched the head and arm fly away from the torso they were attached to and fall to the ground below as the torso itself went lax and slowly fell from the branch where it stood. He couldn’t help but cringe at the familiar scene, but had no time to think on it as his last opponent came at him as he dodged and his attacker successfully cut away a branch. He watched the assassin waste no time in coming after him and tried losing him in the trees. When that didn’t work, he decided to turn and face his opponent. The assassin was caught off guard at the sudden change of movement and was proceeding to land where Kakarot was. Kakarot took advantage of the moment and thrust his sword forward. He cringed again as he felt the sharp blade cut through a solid body. No matter how many times he did that, he’ll never get used to it.
He watched in horror as his attackers’ blood ran down his already red stained blade and heard his victim gasp and choke on his own blood as it sought for another way to escape from the wound that was made. Kakarot slowly pulled his sword away and the assassin gasped and held onto his wound, dropping his weapon. He looked away as the unknown fighter fell to the ground, joining his comrades in death. His gaze went to his blood stained sword and was about to have an episode when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He immediately recognized the figure as it quickly came towards him, but it wasn’t alone. A few more joined the figure, then more…and a few more. Panic took hold of him as he realized that more assassins were coming for his head. Why were they so persistent today? Especially at this hour? The day had just started and already they were bringing more than he can handle. Not deciding to wait for the show, he took off into the dense forest and tried to save himself while he could.

Vegeta stifled a yawn as he struggled to stay still. They were at a tailor’s store, getting their robes fitted and ready for the ceremony to come. Lord Koga was explaining away at the people working on their attire while Ookami threw in a few tips…tips that Vegeta will be sure to remember so he can kill the man later for. Lord Koga actually considered some of those tips and Vegeta glared at his fiancé, who smirked in return. “You should make the waist tighter and the collar line lower and more wide. So that way, the necklace will be more noticeable and won’t get caught on anything and you can see his physique a lot more with the waist tighter.” The evil bastard had said as his Master agreed and ordered for the changes to be made.
“M-Master,” Vegeta gasped as one of the workers tightened the robes around his ribcage. “Won’t I be too exposed? I mean, I’m going to wear something underneath this anyway, right?” He looked at his Master with hope.
“Yes, but it’ll only fit underneath it and won’t show above the collar line. Why? Are you saying you don’t like it?” Lord Koga studied his soon-to-be-son-in-law’s attire.
Vegeta hesitated. “Well…” He let out a breath he’d been holding as the size of the robes was measured. “It’s not that I don’t, I’m just considering about what everyone else will think.”
“Oh, don’t worry about a thing, Vegeta. You’ll look perfect. Both of you will. We’ve thought about this long and hard and we’re sure this is how it’s going to be. Now, move this way so they may work on your shoulders.” Lord Koga demonstrated how he wanted Vegeta to move so he may do the same. Oh, sure he’s thought about this long and hard. He’s still taking suggestions from his son. Sounds a little ‘unsure’ to Vegeta.
“Perhaps you should also make it shorter. So that way, it’ll show off his powerful legs and petite frame, along with the middle being tightened.” Ookami suggested and smirked at Vegeta, who gasped, once again, as the sash tightened.
Lord Koga finally seemed to see the ruse behind his son’s suggestions. “Ah, ah. I know what you’re trying to do Ookami and it’s not going to work. Besides, whatever changes made to Vegeta will have to be made to you as well. Well, for the most part anyway. You two need to look exactly the same, except for the color difference of course.”
Ookami chuckled. “I tried.”
“Master, must this be so tight? I can hardly breathe.” Vegeta couldn’t help but complain as he moved his hands to his middle to express his discomfort.
“Try not to think about it, Vegeta. You’ll get used to it. Now, move your arms back this way.” Lord Koga demonstrated again in how he wanted Vegeta to present himself.
Vegeta reluctantly moved his arms back to the way they were as he fidgeted a bit, trying to get some air into his lungs. He could tell this day was going to be worse than he thought.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kakarot thought this day couldn’t get any worse…he was wrong as he was trapped in the river. The water was knee high, which limited his movement as the assassins slowly moved in closer. He attempted to take a few steps back, but was blocked by five other assassins, who took a few steps closer, blades out and ready. Already it was the middle of the afternoon and the fighters haven’t let up. He thought surely he should’ve killed them all already. How does Lord Akuto manage to keep getting more of them? Surely there aren’t a lot of people out there willing to give up their lives and loyalty for someone like his uncle, but it could be because the clan is so well known. When the assassins on either side of him were only a few inches apart from him, they attacked at once as he tried to block them, but only managed to block a few as his back and arms were sliced. He gritted his teeth and groaned in agony as he quickly pushed off the others and dealt with the rest. He managed to cut two of them and quickly finished them off while they were stunned as the others backed off and began to circle him again.
He panted in his exertion and tiredly eyed his other opponents. He must’ve killed at least fifty of them today. When will it end? Whenever moments became as intense as this throughout the day, Kakarot prayed for Vegeta to show up at those moments, but he knew that was a waste of time. He shouldn’t get his hopes up. It’ll only cause more flaws and distract him. Speaking of flaws, he didn’t notice four of the assassins in front of him (there are seven in total) come forward, but when he did, he noticed a bit too late and managed to get cut on his left thigh, his right arm, and his other side. However, one blade hesitated just before his throat as he stared into the eyes of one of the men clothed in black. Panic reached his eyes as he waited for the inevitable to greet him all too soon. The assassin smirked underneath his mask. “Now, time for you to die, samurai.” Just as he brought his sword back to deliver the final blow, everything seemed to slow down as Kakarot immediately dived into the water and retrieved his sword. However, he didn’t come up for air as his opponent’s blade continued to pushed downward and miss his target. All the assassins looked around them for their target. “Where did he go?!” The one that almost completed his mission ordered more than asked. “Find him!” The others immediately scattered as they searched to complete their task.
Several yards away, drooping spikes broke the surface of the river as the person they belonged to gasped for air. He watched his enemies look for him while he came up with a new plan. Should he flee or attack when they least expect it? If he didn’t get rid of them now, then they will come after him again. But if he killed them, then would more appear? That seemed to be the case all day. Perhaps he should let them be for now and rest while he can. After all, he was losing quite a bit amount of blood. If he kept fighting like this, he’ll die for sure. He’ll have to hide somewhere and wait until nightfall, so he can meet with Vegeta. He kept his body submerged and only his head peeking out of the surface as he crawled to a more secluded spot and fled from his attackers. He only hoped that a spy wasn’t around to spot him, otherwise, he’d be in trouble.
“Aren’t we done yet?! I’d like to breath again so I don’t pass out!” Vegeta couldn’t take it anymore. He’s been patient with his Master and everyone else all day and now he felt like he really was going to faint.
Lord Koga rolled his eyes at Vegeta’s outburst and decided to oblige. “Alright. I suppose that’s enough for today. After all, we managed to get a lot done and you’re both looking magnificent so far.” He studied the two young men and their formal attire. “I believe we’re almost done. So, tomorrow we shall return and finish, then search for a high priest. You both may change while I speak to the owner about tomorrow’s next appointment.” He left their presence as Vegeta quickly hopped down from the pedestal he was standing on, not bothering to wait for the workers to change him.
“Sire, let us get you out of those robes. We don’t want to rip them.” One of the workers (I don’t know what to call them…tailors?) suggested as Vegeta growled in annoyance.
“Alright, but make it quick! I don’t have all night and haven’t had anything to eat since breakfast!” He stood back on the pedestal as the workers quickly did what he ordered. Once free, he quickly slid back on his more ‘comfortable’ robes and headed out towards the carriage that awaited them.
Ookami, who watched the entire time his fiancé changed, decided to accompany him. “I must say, you’ll look quite astonishing in your ‘wedding’ robes. I almost can’t wait until the ceremony. Perhaps you should spend the night with me tonight. My offer still stands, you may accept it if you wish.” He hovered close to his side and whispered heatedly in his ear as a smirk replaced his features.
Vegeta wanted to shiver in disgust at his words, but of course, declined once again. “I think you know my answer. Besides, I have more ‘important’ things to do than waste my entire evening with you.” And with that, he joined the few guards who sat waiting in the carriage as Ookami steamed in his place.
How dare he reject him? Not only did he turn him down once, but twice. When will the young assassin get it through his head? He belonged to him. He suddenly let a small smirk appear on his lips. Oh, he’ll understand eventually. The night of their ceremony, he will understand. Hiding the smirk, he climbed into the carriage and sat next to his stubborn fiancé as his father followed him soon after. “Well, I believe everything is in order now. You two must be exhausted. I know how tiresome it can be, standing in one place all day, but I assure you it’ll be the only time you’ll have to.” Lord Koga explained as they made their way back home. Vegeta resisted the urge to scoff. For some reason, he doubted it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When night fall came, Vegeta sat down with his parents as they ate their dinner. He couldn’t help but glance at his father, who seemed a bit distraught for some reason. “Father, are you alright? You seem a bit…stressed.”
Lord Hokoru glanced over at his son and didn’t let any kind of hesitation show in his answer. “I’m fine. There’s nothing wrong. Of course I’m fine. Now finish you’re meal, so I may have a word with you.” He continued staring at his food and ate at a bit slower pace.
Vegeta quirked an eyebrow and looked to his mother, who seemed to be just as confused, if not a bit worried. However, he shrugged it off for now and did as he was told. After dinner, Lady Hokoru went off to bed as father and son went to the study room for a private chat. “Father, what happened today? I know something’s wrong-”
“That’s not what we’re here to talk about, son. We’re here to discuss about meeting with Kakarot. I want you to go and meet with him, where you usually do, and bring him back here, but don’t come through the front. Sneak in if you can. That should be no problem for the both of you.” He crossed his arms as he looked at his son seriously.
Vegeta felt small at the stern look he was receiving from his father, but tried not to let it bother him. “Alright. I’ll be back shortly.” He slowly left his father’s presence, then went to his room and changed, then exited out the window.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A hooded figure sat in the shadows of the dinky restaurant as he continually stared off in the direction of the abandoned house. His weapon and facial features were hidden by the long cloak and hood as he patiently waited for any sign of movement at the dark building. A small cup of herbal tea sat in front of him, but he ignored it as he tried not to pry his gaze away from the picture in front of him, a little cough escaping him as he kept his mind on the task at hand. He saw movement earlier, but there were several figures who went in and out of the house as they continued to search for their target. Kakarot scowled at the persistent assassins as he clenched his hand around his sheathed sword and coughed slightly. When will they give up and realize that they lost him? Don’t they know he’s not stupid enough to return and perhaps left the area? Not only did he concentrate his gaze on his former residence, but he kept his eyes open for any other movement outside the hovel he currently sat in. He knew it was dangerous to take refuge in a place that knew his identity, but it was even more risky to hide outside where he could be spotted more easily.
He shouldn’t have stayed so long. He should’ve left a long time ago, right when he saw Vegeta tailing him that first night. He should have left already. To continue to stay here would be too risky. He almost lost to his enemies today. What if tomorrow they succeed? He’ll have to find another place to hide out for a while, but where? His thoughts came to a pause when he saw familiar flamed-shaped hair and immediately made his way to the door to stop the noble. As Vegeta began to run past the small restaurant, he was unexpectedly pulled into the place and panicked as he fought off the one who grabbed him. “How dare you! Let me go this-” He stopped all movement when he saw the face underneath the hood. “Kakarot?”
“Shh! Quiet now. No one must know I’m here.” He whispered and coughed again as he pulled the noble back to his dark corner where he currently occupied and sat down.
Vegeta suddenly became worried when he noticed how stern his love was being. “Kakarot, what happened? Why are you in here? You know someone might see you.” He said quietly, not too concerned if someone heard him with how loud the noise level was in there.
“I was ambushed today.” Kakarot chuckled as he leaned onto the small table in front of him and tried not to go into a coughing fit at the small action. “Ambush is an understatement. I was at war. A constant battle that would never end. I actually had to flee in order to save myself.” He rested his face in his hands in his shame.
Vegeta was confused. “What do you mean?”
Kakarot lifted his head and looked to his lover. “Akuto is holding nothing back now. Somehow, he knows I’m here.”
“What? How is that possible? I told him all kinds of lies and made up evidence and reasons why you left! How could he see through it all?” Vegeta clenched his fists in confusion and anger.
Kakarot shook his head and coughed. “I don’t know, but I do know I can’t stay here for much longer.” He began coughing again and held a hand to his mouth.
Vegeta’s anger left him as he took in Kakarot’s condition. “Kakarot, are you alright?” It took him a moment before it hit him. “Are you hurt? I can get you some help…” He trailed off in worry as his love’s coughing turned into a fit, then stopped so he could speak.
“It’s just a few scratches. Besides, I don’t want to cause anymore trouble.” He rested his arms on the table and bowed his head to will the pain away.
“I’m not buying that ‘it’s just a scratch’ trick and I told you I would help you no matter what. Besides, my father wants to meet with you. He says he’s going to help us. Though, I’m not really sure if it’s a trap or not, but who else can we turn to?” He paused when he leaned in more closely and noted the sweat that had formed on his love’s face and his pale color. He gazed downward and saw red stains soak into the brown cloak that covered his body. “Kakarot come with me.” He took a hold of Kakarot’s arm and pulled slightly, so he may do what he said. “Kakarot, I said get up!” He said more sternly and managed to put his arm around his shoulders and wrapped an arm around his injured waist. Kakarot moaned in pain as he let the young noble carry his weight. “Come on, Kakarot! I can’t do this on my own!” Kakarot gasped and managed to carry his own and helped Vegeta make their way to the door.
Just before they went out the door, Kakarot pulled half of the cloak over Vegeta’s head, so no one would recognize him. “We can’t be seen.” He coughed slightly as they made their way toward the dusty street.
Vegeta seemed to understand the cover and didn’t argue. However, he glanced back toward the abandoned house where they usually were. “How come you didn’t stay at your place?” He asked as they trudged along towards his manor.
Kakarot coughed again. “That’s…where they found me. I didn’t expect them…to attack during the day and I’ve been doing what I can…to get rid of them, but they just kept on coming.” He breathed harshly through his mouth as some blood managed to escape through his lips.
Vegeta looked at his love with worry. “Hang on, Kakarot. We’re not far.”
When they reached the wall around the manor, Vegeta looked up the tree that stood right next to it. “Can you climb? We’re going to have to sneak in and we’ll meet my father in his study.”
Kakarot looked up exhaustedly at the tree and nodded. He didn’t say anything as he managed to leap up and grabbed a branch, then slowly pulled himself up as Vegeta followed suit. He helped Kakarot pull himself up and helped him along the branch to the top of the wall, from there was a few yards of an open area, then another climb up some vines and to the ledge that lead to his room. He looked around for guards, but was surprised not to see any. His father did say that he would relieve most of them from duty. So, with that in mind, he leaped down from the wall and gestured for Kakarot to do the same. With some hesitation, Kakarot managed to land on his feet before falling to his knees at the extra exertion. Vegeta bent down and put his arm on his shoulders again to help him across the small area. “Come on, Kakarot. We’re almost there.”
Kakarot moaned, but managed to move his feet. When they reached the vines, Vegeta looked to the older in worry. “Can you make it? Last one.” Kakarot wanted to faint when he realized that the vines were taller than the tree he climbed earlier, but didn’t say anything as he gathered what was left of his strength and struggled up the vines. Vegeta patiently followed him from below when Kakarot stopped. They were halfway up as Vegeta made his way up beside his lover. “How are you doing? Do we need a short rest?” Kakarot didn’t have the strength to answer, but merely nodded. Vegeta laced his arm underneath the vines so he may hold himself up with ease. “Alright. We’ll wait a moment. I’m sorry it’s so difficult, but we have to be careful.” Kakarot just nodded again as he closed his eyes and caught his breath. He coughed a few times before resting his head against his arms. Vegeta moved a little closer and wrapped an arm around his shoulders and head while he regained some of his strength. After a moment, Kakarot looked up from his position and proceeded to move again. Vegeta was surprised that he decided to move again so soon, but didn’t argue as he helped him up the vines.
When they finally made it to the top, Kakarot edged closer to reach the ledge and managed to settle a leg on it, before grabbing onto the siding and pulling himself over. Vegeta helped push him in more as he inched his way over and landed beside him. He helped him into his room and was going to have him lay on the bed, but didn’t make it that far and decided to collapse right there on the floor. Vegeta bent over and rolled Kakarot on his back before pushing the hood away from his face. He gasped at his condition and ran a hand across his forehead and through his wild spikes. “I’ll be right back. I’m going to get the doctor.” He pushed himself from the floor and headed towards the door, then paused and looked back at his love panting on the floor before making a run towards his father’s study.
Longer chapter this time. :) I’ve been kinda lazy with the writing lately, I felt like I owed you all a longer chapter, since I haven’t really been writing to my limit lately. >< I’m glad you all are satisfied with the way things are going. ^^ I know the plot is getting thick, but what I’m worried about is making it ‘too’ thick…if there is such a thing, hehe. But either way, no one’s complaining so far. :) I hope the story continues to keep you all entertained. ^^
