I roll my eyes. I groan. I make a good show of despair... Would I want anything to really change? No. It's all just part of the game. If I went along peaceably with Ronnie's antics, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun for her. Besides, everyone needed a good laugh after the last month, and, even if it was at my expense, I was glad for it. Especially glad to see Heero smile like that.
I think, above everything else, that made it worth it.
Of course, then he and Quatre go and fill the whole house with sounds that are best left private, and all the sex addicts have to investigate. Dragging me along, I might add. It's not exactly that I minded, but it wasn't even noon yet! And it gave Ronnie ideas for later that I wasn't sure I was well enough to accommodate.
All in all, though, it's a good start to a vacation.
******
“Okay,” Trowa whispered. “Show's over.” He turned from the door that lead into Heero and Quatre's room and made his way for his own, Ronnie at his side. “I'm going to lie down for a bit.”
She tilted her head to the side as she pushed open the door. “You hurting?”
“A bit,” he answered truthfully. There was no point in lying to her. She helped him relax against the mound of pillows against the headboard. He smiled up to her. “Thanks. You know, you never realize how much you use your arms to sit or stand until you can't use them.”
She stretched out beside him on the bed. “You'll be able to use your right arm again in a week. Guess you won't need so much help then.”
He shrugged. “I've never been pampered before. It's nice... on occasion.” He gazed at her still flat abdomen. “You're due in November, right?” She nodded, hand automatically falling to her stomach. “So, you, what? Four months along?”
“Yes.”
“Shouldn't you be showing a little?”
She shook her head. “According to the doctor, my muscles are too strong to give that quickly. He said the biggest weight gain is going to be in the last trimester.” She chuckled at his confused expression. “The last few months.”
“Oh.”
She turned to her side and raised up to prop her cheek on her palm. “Are we really ready for this?”
Trowa smiled softly. “I wish I could say: 'Yes, we are', but no one knows, Ronnie. No young couple can say that they know what they're doing.”
She sighed. “I suppose you're right.”
He studied her a moment. “I don't know that I can be a good father as I never had one, but I'll do the best I can.” He took a breath. “Veronica, I want to do this right. I want the baby to have everything I never did. A good roof over it's head. Good meals. A stable, steady environment... Marry me, Ronnie.”
She sat up and gazed down into his eyes. “You know I love you, but-”
“I'm not your father,” he said softly.
She flinched and bit her lip. “Trowa, I-”
“I love you.” He braved shifting his right hand to lay over hers on the mattress. “I'll never walk out on you for any reason.”
She turned her hand to lace her fingers through his. He could see the war in her eyes. She wanted him, she wanted to marry him, but the fear of being abandoned fought against that desire. “I know you won't.”
“But you're still scared. I understand that, but we can't live our lives afraid of what may or may not happen.”
She raked a hand through her hair. She wanted more than anything to give in to the happy little flutter that told her this was right. Part of her felt like dancing around in little circles and proclaim to the world that Trowa Barton loved her and wanted her for life. It was time to decide what she wanted to live for: happiness or peace.
“Marry me,” Trowa prompted.
A slow smile raised to her lips. “Yes, I will.”
His answering smile very nearly took her breath away and she knew she'd made the right decision.

Duo stared at the TV screen as he flipped through channels. Trowa and Ronnie had holed up in their room, Heero and Quatre had finally quieted down after several rounds. Wufei had gone outside to practice his katas. And, as usual, there were one thousand channels and nothing was on. The vid-phone rang and he jumped from the love seat. Zechs' face came onto the screen and he looked anything but happy.
“What's up?”
“How are Heero and Trowa?”
Duo grinned. “Tro's contemplating a haircut and Heero and Quat have been screwin' like bunnies.”
A fine blond brow raised. “Not sure I need that much information.”
Duo shrugged. “You asked how they were.”
“'Fine' would have sufficed.”
“But not nearly so much fun. Was there anything else you needed?”
The blond man nodded. “Marks had videos saved on his home computer of my and Heero's time in that club.”
Duo frowned. “He was there?”
“No evidence of that. They were security feeds. Fact is, he was a part of the weapons suppliers, not the group we were investigating. He was a peon at the time, but he spent years working his way up. Now he's near the top and has been building a resistance. He knew about information Day had that would help him take out all his strongest opponents first. The FBI is involved now.” His lips raised in a rueful smirk. “And they're actually working with us.”
Duo snorted. “With something this big, they're gonna need all the help they can get.”
Zechs nodded. “IA is covering the internal crap, but they have Lu and I heading the Preventers side of the investigation on the other stuff.”
Duo nodded slowly, weighing Zechs' expression. “Une wants Fei and me on it, doesn't she?”
The blond's lips thinned to a fine line. “Yeah. I've convinced her, for now, to let us handle it. She said if we didn't move fast enough for her taste she'd bring you two in. We'll do our best to keep that from happening, but I wanted to let you know, just in case.”
“Thanks man.”
“Not a problem.” He hesitated for a moment. “Duo, he had other recordings. Unrelated. He was very much a sadist.”
Duo frowned. “What kind of videos?”
“One was a security video from the shooting range three years ago.”
Duo paled. “How many people saw it?” he asked in a whisper.
“Just Lu and me. I took it straight to Une. She said it was a closed case.”
He was calm on the outside, but his heart was pounding, sending a roar through his ears. “Okay, thanks for letting me know.”
“Does Wufei know what happened?”
“Hell no.”
Zechs pursed his lips. “You should tell him.”
“What would be the point in that?”
“He's your lover,” Zechs said simply.
Duo fidgeted with his fingers. “I know, but...”
“It couldn't be any harder than me having to tell Lu about that mission with Heero, but she had a right to know. And Wufei has a right to know about this. Trust me, Duo. It's the right thing to do.”
He sighed. “You're right.”
“Of course I am.”
Duo snorted. “Ego much?”
“Only when I know I'm right.”
“And how often is that?”
Zechs smirked. “Just about always.”
Duo rolled his eyes. “Right.”
Zechs chuckled softly. “Take care.”
“Will do.”
The screen went blank and Duo sat back, stretching his arms over his head. Hands caught his wrists and slid down to his chest. He tilted his head up to have his lips caught in a kiss. He smiled as Wufei pulled away.
“What was that for?”
He shrugged. “Because I love you.”
Duo turned the chair and pulled Wufei into his lap, wrapping his arms around his waist and pressing his forehead to Wufei's back between his shoulder blades.
“Duo?”
“I'm sorry.”
Wufei frowned and turned to straddle Duo's lap. He tipped up his lover's chin. “For what?”
“Accusing you of cheating. Treating you like I owned you. Trying to control you. Take your pick.”
Wufei shook his head. “That's over and done with.”
Duo dropped his eyes. “Fei... I need to tell you something, but I'm... well, terrified of how you'll react.”
“You can tell me anything. I love you, nothing will change that.”
He licked his lips, arms tightening around his lover. “You ever...” he trailed off.
Wufei's brows drew together and he ran his knuckles down Duo's cheek. “What is it?”
He took a breath and looked up to Wufei briefly before looking to the side. “When I realized I loved you... I almost bolted. You know, leave them before they can leave you. I never got to keep anything or anyone I loved. I had a rule to never get attached. To get out before things got too serious. But the thought of doing that...” He shook his head. “Somehow you got to me. I couldn't lose you.”
Wufei leaned back. “So that's why you became jealous and possessive?”
Duo shook his head. “I trusted you. I decided to just take a chance and give in.”
“Then, why Duo?”
He swallowed. “You were gone on that six month long mission three years ago.” He dropped his forehead to Wufei's chest. “I went to the shooting range at my usual time that first morning you were gone. I'd been there for about forty-five minutes when...” He cleared his throat. “Oh God, Fei. I wasn't strong enough to stop it.”
Wufei became alarmed as he realized Duo was shaking. He tightened his arms around his lover. “It's all right, Duo. Just tell me what happened.”
“They jumped me,” he whispered, “four of them.”
Wufei gripped Duo's shoulders and pulled him back to look him in the face. “Did they hurt you?”
“They said gays had no business in Preventers. They... did stuff.”
“What kind of stuff?”
Duo squirmed a little. “Beat me up and... shoved an asp in me.” (1)
Wufei choked. “Who were they?”
He shook his head. “It doesn't matter. They were fired and incarcerated.”
Wufei wanted to jump at that moment and kill the bastards that hurt Duo, but anger wasn't what his lover needed at the moment. “Une knows?”
Duo bit his lip. “And Sally.”
“Why didn't you tell me?” he asked softly.
Violet eyes raised to onyx. “I was embarrassed and I didn't want you to think I was weak.”
Wufei cupped his face. “It was four against one, Duo. You aren't weak. It could have happened to anyone, and subconsciously you know that. Otherwise you wouldn't have started worrying about me.”
Duo shrugged. “Maybe.”
“Definitely.”
Duo grunted. “Give me some time to accept that.”
“How much damage did they do?”
“Broken arm, two fractured ribs, and... some bleeding.”
“How much?”
He cringed slightly. “Enough that Sally kept me in bed for a little over a week.”
“What?”
Both turned to see Quatre and Heero in the doorway. The blond gazed at Duo. “When were you hurt? What happened?”
He sighed and prodded Wufei to get up. “Tell them if you want. I'm going out for a bit.” He kissed him quickly and disappeared into the kitchen. A few minutes later they heard his motorcycle revving. Wufei fell back into the chair and rubbed his eyes.
“What's going on?” Heero asked as he sat in the recliner.
“Three years ago, while I was gone on a mission, he got the crap beat out of him in the firing range.”
Quatre sat on the edge of the sofa. “But... if I'm remembering correctly, Une told us he was sent on a classified mission.”
“She obviously lied,” Heero grunted. “Who did it? And why?”
Wufei shook his head. “He wouldn't say who, only that they were fired.” He dropped his eyes to the floor. “It was a gay bashing.”
Heero's face darkened. “Why didn't he tell us?”
“Said he was embarrassed.” Wufei stood. “I think I'm going to make a request for dinner.”
Quatre and Heero followed him and began raiding the fridge.
“Hey,” Marty protested. “Can't you wait till supper?”
“Skipped lunch,” Heero murmured as he and Quatre pulled out tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, several different kinds of lunch meat, bacon, mayo and mustard. “Trowa and Ronnie can fend for themselves, too. Wufei wants a special dinner for Duo.”
Marty turned to the Chinese man. “What would you like? Steak? Mahi mahi, perhaps? I've a-”
“No,” Wufei cut in gently. “It can't be anything too extravagant or he'll think I'm pitying him. I need comfort food, and for him that's burgers, fries, and shakes.”
Marty nodded. “Anything else?”
“No, that should do it.”
“What time?”
He glanced at the clock. It was near two. “Have it ready by five, if you don't mind.”
“Not at all.”
“Thank you.” He looked to Heero and Quatre. “I have some errands to run. I'll be back.”
They made their sandwiches and returned to their bedroom where Mike was setting up for the chemo. He smiled to Heero. “Glad to see you're looking better.”
“Thank you,” Heero said quietly, appetite diminishing at the thought of being pumped full of drugs again. A gentle hand squeezed his knee and he gave Quatre a tight smile before forcing himself to eat the sandwich.
Quatre wasn't feeling very hungry himself and wished they had stayed downstairs. “Where do you think Wufei was going?”
“My bet is to see Une.”
Quatre nodded slowly. “I can see him doing that, but what's the point? I mean, if he told Sally not to tell anyone what happened, she can't due to doctor/patient confidentiality. And Une is held to the same principles when it comes to her agents.”
“That's true, but if an agent has suffered any sort of trauma that may cause problems in the future, there's a clause that their partner, job-wise or lover, has rights to the information.”
“Hm, I didn't know that.”
Heero nodded. “It was put into effect when an agent almost killed his partner. He'd been suffering with some mental problem, I'm not sure what it was, but they were on a mission that went longer than expected and he ran out of his medication.
“She had no idea what was going on with him or how to help him. She wound up getting shot and he's in an institution. No matter how many times she goes to see him, he can't believe she's alive. He thinks she's a ghost or hallucination.”
“That's awful.”
He looked to Mike. “Exactly. None of us want that to happen again. Our jobs are dangerous enough as it is.”
Mike nodded, noting that Heero had managed to finish his food. “You ready?”
He sighed. “As I'll ever be.”
******
“Commander?”
“Yes?”
“Agent Chang wishes to see you.”
She sighed. After Zechs had found that file, she was afraid somehow it would get back to Chang. “Send him in.” She stood as he entered and prepared herself for hot anger. She wasn't disappointed.
“Who did it?”
“They're in jail, Chang, and will be for at least another fifteen years.”
He folded his arms over his chest. “What charges were they found guilty of?”
She sat back down. “Assaulting an officer of the law, attempted murder, sexual assault, and hate crimes.”
“I want to see the medical report.”
She gazed at him a moment before grabbing her phone and dialing Sally's extension. “Bring up Maxwell's medical records... Change wants to see them... It's authorized under the Partner Protection Policy. Thank you.”
Wufei nodded and sat, cooling some. “Thank you.”
She pursed her lips. “I wouldn't thank me just yet.”
A few minutes later Sally entered the room with a thick folder and set it in front of Wufei on the desk. She flipped through several pages.
“This is just his initial physicals and exams from when he first joined Preventers.” She paused in her flipping. “Wufei, are you sure you want to see this?”
“Yes.”
She sighed and backed away. He flipped to the next page and clenched his fist. Pictures of Duo's body riddled with bruises were clipped to the medical report. Wufei tore his eyes from the pictures to read through the report. By the end, his teeth were clenched so tightly his jaw hurt and his nails were digging into his palms. He moved to the incident report.
Duo always went to the firing range early and Une would usually come in at some point. That morning, she'd come in to hear taunts of: 'Enjoy that, queer?' and 'Is this how your boyfriend does you?' Wufei read a few more lines and finally had to push it away.
“I almost lost him,” he whispered.
Sally rubbed his shoulder. “But you didn't. That's what's important.”
“Yeah.”
