Nineteen
It was dark without their lantern, eerie and quiet.“Are we gonna die down here?”
Envy lifted his head away from the stone slab he rested against and looked at the young alchemist in his lap. He’d uncovered Edward an hour after he’d awoken, and found the boy near writhing in pain. His automail arm was useless, his face caked in blood. They sat together now, because it was all they could do. They’d gone as far as they could, survived as much as they could. Now, neither of them had the strength to keep going. Still, Envy shook his head.
“No. We’re gonna get out.”
“Are you sure?”
Envy stroked Ed’s hair. “I’m sure.” He just didn’t know how. They sat in silence, Envy curled about Edward and Edward in Envy’s lap, holding tight to him like a frightened child. Ed’s eyes were closed, probably imagining better times. Envy just pet Edward’s dirty hair, trying to muster up the energy to move. He knew they couldn’t sit here and wait. They had to keep moving. But they couldn’t. Edward was exhausted. He was hungry, thirsty, hurt. Envy was none of those things. He would survive because he was a homunculus. It was an unfair advantage.
“Can’t you use alchemy on that wall?” Envy asked, already aware of the answer.
“With what?” Ed asked, Envy silently mimicking. “My right arm is useless, I don’t have chalk. What do you want me to do?”
Envy didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. They both knew this was the end of their road. It was a long while before Ed sat up, and then he pushed himself to his feet. Envy watched, silently keeping an eye on how Ed moved. The young alchemist touched the alchemically constructed wall with his left hand, sliding his fingers over the little marks that made up the alchemy. He lifted his right hand with his left, uttered an apology, then began to scrape out a circle with his metal fingers.
It was crude at best, but it would serve his purpose. He didn’t care who had constructed the wall or why; he just knew he could destroy it. He looked over at Envy. “We’re going to go through.”
“And how do you expect to keep the mountain from falling on our heads?”
“As soon as I start, you shove us out. I’ll try to break everything in the direction we’re going.”
Envy lurched to his feet, grinning slightly. “It’s suicidal. I approve.” He pressed up against Edward, covering the smaller body with his own.
They took a deep breath as one, then Ed activated the circle. The reaction was instantaneous. Everything exploded outward, and Envy shoved as hard as he could, sending them out into bright glaring sunlight. Rocks hit them and bounced away as the pair went tumbling down the mountainside. They landed hard when they finally stopped, Envy over Ed, both laughing maniacally. Then Edward’s eyes rolled back into his head and he slipped into unconsciousness.
Envy slowly removed his hands from around Ed’s throat and patted the young alchemist’s cheek. “Sweet dreams, pipsqueak.”
Then Envy was gone, off stalking Raymond Goetz, since the man deserved every bit of Envy’s wrath. He paused only long enough to alert someone to the explosion on the mountainside, to ensure Ed would be found. After all, what would be the point of escaping only to die once they were out?
Roy burst into the inn with very little dignity. Right behind him was Alphonse, who immediately rushed to his brother’s side. Ed had a bandage around every part of his body, even his eyes. He was still unconscious, so he didn’t respond to Alphonse’s frantic calls. The Colonel set a hand on Alphonse’s shoulder and smiled. “We’ll get him to the hospital. He’ll be better in no time.”Alphonse nodded and continued to clutch to Edward’s hand.
Roy forced himself to leave the brothers Elric and find Riza. The woman was patiently waiting where he’d left her, eyes focused on the half-destroyed mountainside. When he reached her side, only her glance betrayed her worry.
“Alive.” Roy told her. “Banged up pretty bad, but alive.”
“Thank God.” Riza relaxed then, her stance much less rigid. “It was a miracle he was found at all.”
“He’s a smart kid. Found his way out and then collapsed because of injuries and exhaustion.” Roy shrugged.
“He wasn’t alone, Colonel.” Riza said softly. “He was strangled. And it seems Goetz had disappeared.”
Roy frowned. He’d seen the bruises from fingers on Edward’s neck, briefly as the villagers carried him into the inn. “Those hands are too slight to belong to Raymond.”
“Then who?”
“I don’t know, but I’ve got an idea. And it’s better if we don’t pursue him, if my idea is right.” Roy scratched at the stubble that had managed to grow. “He’ll be dead before too long.”
Riza eyed Roy searchingly, but nodded. The ever dutiful woman just turned to salute her commanding officer. “Then I will arrange for us to return to Eastern Command and for the Fullmetal Alchemist to be taken to the hospital.”
“Yes, please.” Roy said, giving Riza her dismissal. As the Lieutenant moved away to complete her duties, Roy returned to the inn, coming to stand by Alphonse’s side. His fists clenched then relaxed. All throughout the boys’ journey, he’d had to worry about losing Edward. The past two weeks had opened Roy’s eyes, and he knew that, while he couldn’t stop Ed from continuing his journey or keep him from getting hurt, he could sure as hell tell the young man how he felt about him.
Couldn’t he?
