Bardock quickly looked around the woman. “Shit,” he said as he watched teams of Saiyans fly off in every direction. “Fasha, Tora, the prince is out back, go get him now.” The two Saiyans nodded, leaving the house. Bardock got on his scouter next, “Shugesh, Borgos, find us a ship. Steal one of you have too, I don’t care. Just get one here, fast.”
“Wait! It’s not much, but I have my ship right here!” Bulma said pulling out a capsule.
Bardock smirked at Bulma. “Never mind. Get your asses to my place now,” he said into the scouter. He looked outside once more and motioned for the others to follow him. He took off running towards the desert, the other three following him. Bulma clicked the plunger on the capsule and threw it as hard as she could. A huge space ship appeared out of the smoke. Bardock turned to Gine. “Gine, I have to...”
“I understand. Go,” Gine told her mate. Bardock nodded, heading up the ramp with Bulma and Kakarot. Gine quickly looked around and ran back to her house.
“Prince Vegeta” Tora yelled, running up behind Vegeta, “We need to go, now!”
Vegeta could sense the two behind him, but he couldn’t hear anything they were saying. His heart was pounding in his chest and he couldn’t shake the feeling of numbness that had washed over his body. He blinked and Lyri stood on the other side of her grave. “Go!” she yelled. He blinked again, surprised, but she was gone and Fasha stood in front of him. Reality snapped back to him and he heard Fasha yell.
“Come on, kid!” the Saiyan woman yelled, shoving him away from Lyri’s grave. Vegeta stumbled backwards. He looked up, sensing the all the Saiyans that we’re flying towards them.
“No time to explain, sire,” Tora said, “We need to get you out of here, now.”
Vegeta growled. “Let them come,” he snarled, “They won’t stand a chance!”
“Sorry, kid,” Fasha said before punching him hard in the head with a ki-laced punch. Vegeta fell forward and Tora grabbed him, dragging him toward the ship. They quickly boarded and Bulma guided the ship off Planet Vegeta as fast as her ship would allow.
Nix’s eyes narrowed as he watched the ship leave the planet. “Coward,” he muttered. He turned to a guard behind him. “You,” he said, “Have someone follow them. I want to know where their going and why. I want him brought back and I want him brought back alive. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, sir!” the guard said before running off.
Once Bulma had put enough distance between them and Planet Vegeta, she activated the ship’s autopilot and stood up. She walked into the galley, where everyone except for Vegeta, had congregated. “Where’s Vegeta?” she asked.
“Tora tossed him in one of the rooms,” Fasha told her.
“Is he going to be ok?” Bulma asked.
“He just lost his mate. What do you think?” Fasha snapped.
“They weren’t mates,” Kakarot said quietly, “It was all an act so Vegeta could get on the throne after his coming of age.”
“So...they hadn’t mated...” Bardock said, to himself.
“Bardock?” Bulma asked, confused.
“They’re not mated, but they bonded,” Bardock muttered.
“That’s extremely rare,” Tora said, “Almost unheard of.”
“How else do you explain the prince’s actions then?” Bardock asked, “It’s not like him. It’s not normal grief. A broken bond is the only explanation.”
“Poor guy,” Fasha muttered, “I can’t imagine.”
“What are you talking about?” Bulma asked.
“When Saiyans mate, they share their souls with each other. We call it a bond. You always know when your mate is in trouble, if they’re in pain and you can pick up on their emotions. Bonds run so deep between a couple that only death can break it. And when that happens...” Bardock started.
“The living Saiyan becomes depressed. They either fuck up and get themselves killed or...” Fasha she trailed off, not finishing the sentence.
“Isn’t there something we can do to help?” Bulma asked.
“Don’t you get it, blue?” Fasha asked, “There is nothing we can do! Because we can’t bring back the dead!”
Vegeta’s closed eyes clenched harder. His head tossed to one side. Raditz had Lyri again, throwing her towards him and he wasn’t quick enough to save her. The shot pierced her armor and she fell into his arms. Vegeta bolted up right in bed. He was covered in sweat and his heart felt like it was trying to punch its way out of his chest. His breathing quickened and his eyes widened when he realized that she was sitting on the bed, watching him.
“Come on, Bardock! You don’t really believe those rumors, do you?” Fasha asked.
“What other choice do we have?” Bardock asked.
“Guys, calm down!” Bulma said.
“Shut up, blue!” Fasha snapped.
“The name is Bulma, not blue! And I agree with Bardock. It’s our only option!” Bulma snapped back.
“Don’t you all think we should ask Vegeta?” Tora asked, “It should be his decision.”
“What should be my decision?” Vegeta asked, walking into the galley. Everyone looked at each other then back at the Saiyan prince. “Spit it out!”
“During my travels I’ve heard rumors of orbs that can grant any wish. Even resurrection,” Bardock told him, “They reside on Namek. Tora is right, though, prince Vegeta, you bonded with Lyri. It’s up to you.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. We hadn’t mated, therefore we didn’t bond,” Vegeta said, dismissively.
“It’s not unheard of to form a bond before mating,” Bardock told him.
Vegeta said nothing. As much as he wanted to deny it, deep down, he knew it was true. “Set a course for Namek.” With that, he went back to the room and closed the door behind him. Bulma and Bardock went to the cockpit. Bardock started taping at the controls and set the autopilot course to Namek.
“You can read English?” Bulma asked.
“If you mean common tongue, then yes,” Bardock told her, “You tend to pick up on different languages when you do what we do.” He looked at Bulma. “You do know what we do, right?”
“I believe I’ve pieced it together,” Bulma told him.
“Really?” Bardock asked, amused.
“You’re mercenaries,” Bulma said confidently, “An army for hire.”
“At one point, we were,” Bardock told her.
“And now?” she asked.
“And now, for the most part, we only serve Frieza,” he said.
“Frieza. That rat bastard threatened Lyri before she died. How can you guys stand serving him?” Bulma asked.
“We don’t have a choice,” Bardock told her.
“Why? What does he hold over you? How can a race as strong as yours be forced to do his bidding?” she questioned.
“As strong as we are,” he explained, “He is stronger. He’s destroyed planets while barely lifting his finger. And they say that that’s not even his full strength. As for what he has over us...it’s more what he had over the king.”
“So you’re just doing his bidding to survive?” Bulma asked.
“Wouldn’t you?” Bardock asked her.
Bulma pondered his question. She wanted to say no, that she wouldn’t. But she had never been in their position before. Earth, for the most part had been peaceful. So peaceful that it was almost boring. “I guess I would,” she agreed after a minute. She was quiet for a couple minutes. “What happens now? With everything that just happened, I doubt Frieza will be at the forefront of any one’s mind.”
Bardock shrugged. “Namek. Then back home to take the throne from Nix...”
