Ozuma crept soundlessly down the hall. He couldn't risk being heard by people who could be every where yet nowhere at the same time. Ozuma had slipped on a pair of socks for better sneaking quality. Sure, with the lights off they could do nothing. But they would gladly alert their daughter to his whereabouts; and him without a weapon he will be a sitting duck. Once he made it to the stairs, Ozuma placed a hand on the wall and another on the banister, spreading his legs apart so that they fell on the side of the stairs where the lining is, he slides quickly down the stairs with a low swishing sound. He stifled a low grunt when he landed on the floor so suddenly, but it wasn't loud enough to be heard by anyone.
Ozuma had a pretty good idea as to where the girl was, he heard footsteps down the hall as he had so many other nights when they first moved into the haunted home. It seems the girl had been returning to her room everyday just before daylight. And with his parents not really at home and he, too afraid, to go to the end of the hall where the creepy room resides, it's pretty obvious that no one would have ever found her in there.
Now in the kitchen, he goes over to the row of drawers pulling one open; gently he rummaged for a flashlight. Thank god his family had tons of the things, he just prayed they were all where he remembered them to be. He couldn't very well search the attic through the remaining un-opened boxes for one when he needed it before he got in there. Yes! He grabbed a rather long one, it banged the top of the little drawer as he pulled it out. He pressed a finger to his lips to silence the sound that's already passed before pulling out another one, a smaller one, he walked out of the kitchen leaving the drawer open, he saw no point in closing it. Heading into the living room, Ozuma turned off into the hallway.
I have to make sure no one gets in here. Creeping down the hall, he turned the lock over on the front door then the larger one. Sorry mom and dad, but I have to do this on my own. Heading back into the kitchen, he made sure the back door was locked as well, before returning upstairs.
Ozuma had to skip the first two stairs as they always squeaked from even the lightest stepping people. Once in the hall the Balaji child swallowed his fears and swung the flashlight's head against the wall. The bang would have startled anyone who was unsuspecting of noise in the silent house, but the place remained that way afterward. Giving it another try, he heard the creaking of a door. His actions paused, he looked over his shoulder. Now was not the time to not know where Dawn was. Was she behind him, or in front?
The stairs creaked on the first two boards, just as they always do. She had been downstairs the whole time! Be brave, Ozuma, for you are strong. You will not let anything happen to your family. Banging the flashlight against the wall again, he walked up the hall hoping that Dawn doesn't decide to just pile drive him through the house then kill him.
She seemed to be taking her sweet time on the stairs, she was in no hurry, probably checking out what the mixed child was up to.
"This place gives me the creeps," he spoke quietly. "I wish I wasn't alone all the time."
She sounded closer, but he couldn't be sure. Turning around to look was a bad idea, the last thing Ozuma wanted to see was his mask floating down the hall after him at a medium pace. He would surely lose his nerve then. He was almost at the end of the hall, he had to make sure she remained following him so he began to bang the flashlight against the wall again.
"I hate being alone... No friends, or anyone to talk to." The girl was alone all the time in her final days of sanity, maybe Ozuma's words would get to her. "My friends, Zeo and Tyson and Max, they all left me in the first week. I thought I was mad at them but it turns out, I miss them more than I hate them."
His body jumped hearing what sounded like fingernails against the wall. Okay, so friendless is a touchy subject with her. But is that my fault? Rei came over to play with her, she was the one who drove him off acting weird. Smiling, he was glad to see the end of the hall turn off. Going left, he opened the attic door, praying the girl gave him a bit of distance to get up the stairs before he trapped them in.
Backwards, Ozuma took the stairs two at a time, waiting to see his mask turning around the corner. But he didn't see anyone or anything. Once he made it to the top of the stairs and past the entrance of the door, to his surprise, the door was slammed in his face. "Huh?" Reaching for the knob, he gave it a jiggle but it wouldn't budge, the next thing he heard was the lock turning over. He was locked in!
"Play nice, Dawn." Serina whispered through the door.
Ozuma's eyes went wide, if that was Serina who had been following him, then where is-...? Turning around he nearly fell back on his butt, as he came face to face with his tribal mask. Well, Dawn wasn't exactly eye-level with him, she was an inch or four taller so Ozuma was looking at the girl's neck.
His breathing picked up; he wanted to run but his legs didn't want to work. And it was best if he didn't try to run, he might fall over with his lack of coordination. She merely stood there, not moving, not speaking. Just stood there. Was she waiting for him to make the first move or what?
Her head looked down at his hands, seeing the flashlight it quickly shot back up. Dawn's large brown eyes narrowed behind the mask. At least one of them did, the other was kind of pussed closed and slitted. Seeing the rage in the girl's eye, Ozuma wanted to shake his head and assure her that he wasn't planning anything, but he was frozen in fear. And as if Ozuma's body were telling him that he was about to die, he heard the sound of a long screeech like a heart monitor giving out, ringing through his ears.
Move Ozuma, take her out. Just like in your dream. He coached himself. But it didn't really do much for him. In his dream, she was unsuspecting of his actions, but now with her staring down at him he highly doubted it would work. He was trapped between her and the door, and wished more than anything now that he wasn't alone in this.
"I'm sorry you had no one t-," he wet his dried lips and tried again. "to talk to..." He was gonna try his hand at reasoning with her. "I have no friends either... not really... everyone thinks I'm crazy and a scaredy cat."
Dawn's head seemed to jerk only downward as she either nodded or began to silently sob for him. Swallowing hard, Ozuma went on with his distraction. "My friend Zeo used to be my penpal, that means we wrote back and forth to each other and," he shrugs. "Talked on the phone."
She was still again. Looking at him and maybe listening to his story.
What will get through to her? The mixed male wondered. I've got it! "Rei! Do you remember Rei?"
At the mention of the Chinese teen's name Dawn started to scratch at the mask over her face. Her hands moved like claws, raking over the mask and down to her neck. Streams of blood became visible when her nails dug into her skin. She looked like she felt nothing of this. Dawn only seemed upset by his mentioning of Rei.
Ozuma watched her, not sure if this was a good reaction or a bad one. But he went on speaking anyway. "Yeah, he misses you, you know?" Yeah, girls like to hear that, right? He narrowed his eyes at his own words, scolding his self mentally. No. Rei doesn't deserve that, what am I thinking? He's terrified of her! I'm terrified of her... what am I gonna do?
"Rr-," it sounded like she had tried to speak but someone stuffed something thick into her mouth and throat, making her words incoherant dribble. "Rrrrrrr." Her voice sounded like a whimper now as she struggled with the mask.
Does she wanna take my mask off? Maybe she's mad because she got stuck in it... Mentally challenged people sometimes have a hard time with stuff. Walking forward a step, Ozuma reached out for the mask.
Dawn froze seeing this and glared at him. Ozuma stopped what he was doing immediately. Withdrawing his hands back like he were about to be lunged at by a rattle snake. "Don't be afraid... I just... wanted to help you get the mask off." He tried to reach for her again.
But this time her reaction was different, she lunged at the boy, shoving him back against the door, pinning his arms at his sides. The flashlights fell from his hands to the floor with a loud thud. "Rrr-... HRhRhhhrrrr- Mmmmaaaaaasssk!" She was trying again to talk.
"Please don't hurt me," Ozuma's eyes stung with tears.
She pressed the face of the mask to Ozuma's and rubbed her head vigorously against his. The hard texture of the mask scratched at his skin leaving little bloody cuts along his cheeks, re-opening the ones he had received before.
"Aaaahhh!" He kicked his legs back and forth, trying to get a little advantage over her.
Digging his foot into her pelvic area he knocked the girl away. Frantically he reached for the door knob and tried it again giving himself a mental slap. He didn't notice that the door had a key lock on it.
Seeing that Dawn was still recovering on the floor, he swiped his flashlights and attacked. He beat the girl's face frantically with the heavier one. The mask began to crack under the pressure- why wouldn't it? It was only paper-mâché. With his left hand that's holding the weaker of the two, he turned on the smaller beam of light and shined it on her face. Dawn screamed trying to shrink away from him. He couldn't believe this was working! The girl groaned and grunted under his assault, while trying to shield her eyes and face from the light.

Rei walked up the porch stairs of the Balaji house. He has a bag in his hands that contained Ozuma's cleaned and dried clothes. He hoped the younger male was all right as he was beyond worried about Ozuma, since he'd left his house. But he couldn't stop him from leaving when he wanted to go. ...Still, he should have asked him to stay until he could come over with him. Ringing the door bell he waited for an answer. A moment passed and no one came out.
Maybe he's asleep? Mentally smacking himself, he shook his head. Yeah right, Rei. Odds of that are slim. I hope he's not in trouble- but who knows- maybe he isn't at home at all. He did say his father should be home by now. Maybe they left to get his mother. Looking up at the ominous home, he frowned.
Too many memories, and he hated being out here alone. Kai had to leave for a doctor's appointment, so he couldn't come with him. But Rei didn't want to wait any longer. The storm had passed and the sun was trying to come out for the day, but it was barely visible yet behind the thick rain clouds being blown away.
Walking over to the window, he placed a hand over his eyes to peek inside. But the curtains were drawn over. Going back over to the front door, Rei reached out for the knob hoping it wasn't rude to just barge in, but what if Ozuma was hurt?
Giving it a turn, the knob didn't budge. The raven haired male chuckled to himself. "Haha. See there, the door is locked, he can't be at home." He said out loud. "I should leave him a message though, let him know I came by." Taking out his phone he dialed the number and waited out the rings until the machine came on.
"Rei?"
Turning his head, he smiled when he saw the aqua haired teen walking up the porch. "Hey Zeo, what are you doing here?"
"...I came to talk to Ozuma, but I guess that won't happen because you're here." He frowned, angrily crossing his arms over his chest.
"Zeo? What is your problem?" He narrowed his eyes in confusion. "Did I do something to you? Or is it because of Tyson again?"
"Leave Tyson out of this, this is about you and Ozuma."
"Me and Ozuma? What about us?"
Zeo rolled his eyes, an angered sigh accompanying it. "You like him don't you? What happened to Kai, huh?"
"Nothing happened to Kai. And... where did you get the idea that Ozuma and me are together?"
"Well you said it, not me." The younger teen argued with everything he had, just to fight the tears.
Inside the home.
Ozuma can't hear anything over the sound of the girl's screams. He was really giving her the best that he had, but all his work failed him when the mask broke free from her face, giving him a better look at her.
"Aaaaahhhh!" He staggered away from her, his back slamming against the door.
The girl's slit eye wasn't exactly real. It was glass! The eye lids were bruised around it, so badly that they had swelled with puss. Chunks of her stringy black hair were missing and her head bubbled over other parts of it, pinning it to her head. Her face had a lot of other nasty marks that looked like someone had gotten to her with their fingernails, taking out as much skin as they could.
It must have been from Peter when they had their struggle by the lake. Dawn's nose was pushed to the left, as though it were broken and smashed that way; a lot of her teeth are missing, probably due to the fact that she hadn't brushed them in years and missed a lot of meals, she had to eat who knows what from outside. But her right eye seemed so innocent, like underneath the insanity there was still a little girl worth saving. But listening to her childish, pig-like squeals, Ozuma felt no pity- just fear.
"AaaAA! AARr- RrrAAA!"
She held her face with her hands to protect her from the light that was laying on the floor from abandonment by Ozuma in his cowardly retreat. Frantic, Dawn picked it up and hurled it across the room. It broke from the impact against the door.
Ozuma ducked his head, covering it with his arms like they tell you to do during an earthquake to watch out for any flying objects that came his way. But while covering his head, he didn't see the girl running over to him with her arms extended.
The crazed Dawn grabbed Ozuma by the hair and began to drag him across the attic floor. The wood tore at his pajama pants having them rip up along the leg. Ozuma tried to dig his feet into the floor but nothing stopped him from being pulled around. Grabbing Dawn's bumpy, and feeling as if they no longer have flesh, wrist he broke the girl's skin receiving a howl from her.
Staggering across the room, Ozuma hid behind a trunk that stood in the corner, he hoped the girl hadn't seen him hide there. I have to get out of here. He looked around frantically, wondering why he didn't grab a flashlight along the way.
When the girl's screaming ceased the room grew very quiet. Ozuma could hear faint voices inside the house. But he didn't know who it was or where it was coming from. Whoever it was it sounded like they were arguing. Dawn seemed to be listening too, or frozen where she stood because her wrist hurt so badly. Neither she nor he made a move from the place they found themselves in.
"Said what?" Asks Rei. "Zeo, you're being ridiculous. I'm in love with Kai. He is my boyfriend, not Ozuma. So back off!"
"Well you sure could have fooled me!" He was shouting now.
"You're fooling yourself, man! I'm not making moves on Ozuma!" He towered over the boy.
"Back off!" He shoved him as hard as he could.
That sounds like Rei and Zeo. Looking at Dawn she remained still for the time being, then her head jerked up hearing Rei's voice loud and clear telling Zeo to 'back off'. Her throat crackled with sounds of a voice trying to come out. Good, be distracted while I think of a way out of here. Looking around, there were a number of things he could use in the attic to hurt the girl but right now, he just wanted out.
That could work. He spotted his father's old bowling ball sitting in its bag at the other corner of the room. If the machine would hold out just a bit longer he could reach it and throw it at the little vent above the wall.
Rei wasn't sure when it had happened but Zeo had swung at him, landing a good punch to the jaw. "Psycho! What's the matter with you?" He held his hand to his face.
"You're what's the matter!" He was going to cry now, he could feel it. "Ever since you met Ozuma you were after him, weren't you!?" He raised his fist again, bringing it down with his words. "Weren't YOU!?"
Rei stepped out of the way and swung back; he was not going to let himself get beat up by some punk kid with a bad attitude.
Zeo hit the wooden floor of the porch, his hands landing first, serving to break his fall. "Stupid jerk!" He shouts back and attacks him with a full body assault. Knocking Rei onto his back he punched him repeatedly with everything he had.
Ozuma's heart raced with every slow second he took across the room to get the bowling ball. Dawn seemed in another world as she listened to the two fighting. When Rei called out in pain, she slumped over to the door and tugged at the knob.
"Mmaa! Mmmyyy mmmmmmm." She pulled harder and harder.
While she was distracted, Ozuma snagged the bowling ball and hurried over to the wall with the venting. Looking up at the distance he swallowed. How was he ever gonna get it to go that high? Please make it...
Closing his eyes, he opens them again then hurls the ball up and over by first swinging it between his legs. He grunted from the weight of the ball leaving his hands. It was heavier than he thought, or maybe he still had some effects of the sleeping pills in his tea running through his system. He wasn't sure which, but hurling that ball made him light headed.
The bowling ball sailed upward, and thankfully, hit the target. The wall broke away but the ball hadn't gone out of the hole as he thought it would. Instead it came crashing back down to the floor. Ozuma moved out of the way, he had no intentions of catching it and the last thing he wanted was to be hit by a bowling ball.
"..." He gathered all the volume in his voice, then he let it out shouting, "HELP M-...!" He was knocked sideways by something heavy coming in contact with the side of his head. Falling to the floor, Ozuma blinked to retrieve his vision but he felt it slipping. "...Wha-... Aaa.."
The back of the young teen's neck was grabbed and his face met the floor over and over again. The girl loomed over him in a crouch keeping him pinned to the floor. His nose broke and began to bleed all over. He had no time to feel the pain though, he had to think fast. Reaching around, literally, blindly he felt his fingers brush past the bowling ball. Rolling it over to him, he missed at first but tried again. The ball tumbled over so that the holes could meet his fingers, stuffing them inside, he swung his arm backward hitting anything he could. And lucky for him, Dawn's face was close enough to hit.
He was sure he broke her jaw with that one, as he heard a gritting sound. Something rolled across the floor beside him, it pinged a bit. Not like metal, not like any item he's ever heard, and when he helped his self up off the floor his hand landed on it. Ozuma winced feeling the shape of a tooth indent his hand.
Going over to the hole he shouted again. "HEELP MEEE!" He called again. "Somebody! REI! ZEO!"
"Get off me!" The raven haired boy shoved Zeo away. "Ozuma!?" He looked up, growling, he forgot he was on the porch. Rei hurried out the little door and looked around for where the voice had come from. Zeo was right behind him.
"Ozuma?" He looked around as well. "Where are you!?"
He and Rei ran around to the back of the house. The Chinese teen looked up and saw the hole in the wall. "Ozuma!" He called again. The two of them could hear screaming going on inside the house and they needed only that before they tried to break in. "Zeo you try the front windows, I'll take the back."
"Right." Zeo hurried off, his heart was pounding so hard he thought it would explode.
There was no way Ozuma was being hurt. There was just no way. Banging on the front door, he called through it, but realised that it was a waste of time. Running back out of the porch, he searched for a rock to break the window.
Ozuma grabbed the ball while the girl rolled on the floor in pain. There had to be a way out of the attic. And if he couldn't unlock the door with the key, he would just break the knob off. He started to hammer away at the thing- "Yyaa!" His fingers were shoved painfully into the holes of the ball, he was sure one of them was broken. Dawn had slammed herself right into his back. She obviously didn't want him getting out until she was through with what she was planning on doing to him.
Swinging the ball back he caught nothing but air. Ozuma returned his attack to the knob and finally after what felt like fifteen swings it broke off. His free hand shoved the other knob out of the door and it popped open.
Outside. Rei and Zeo are making no progress of breaking into the house. Rei slammed his shoulder into the back door, while Zeo searched for a rock to break the window. The aqua haired teen didn't notice the car pulling up in the drive way or the slamming of the doors from the passengers getting out.
Ozuma tumbled mercilessly down the stairs of the attic. Dawn had pushed him. He had no time to worry about the fall because the second he landed he was running; the girl was right on his heels. His foot came into contact with a piece of glass from the light bulb that must have been missed, he fumbled for a second but hobbled the rest of the way. He had to make it to the front door. There would be enough sunlight at the front of the house to save him and kill her.
"Zeo, what're you doing honey?" Tsugani asks the boy.
Zeo turned to her, fear all over his face, tears in his eyes. "Ozuma's in trouble!" He shouted without meaning too.
"What?"
She and Himani ran over to their home, turning the knob.
"We tried to break a window- Rei!" He stopped what he was saying to call the other boy. "Rei! But I couldn't find any rocks..."
Himani thumbed his keys to get the house one, but it seemed to take forever.
"Hurry Mani!" Tsugani was in tears.
Ozuma hurried down the stairs as fast as he could, into the kitchen. Banging his shoulder into the wall, he held away the pain he felt as he sped into the living room and down the hall. He was almost home free! If he could just unlock the door. Squinting he saw the white light of something shining in front of him. Was the door open? He wasn't sure but he had to get to it.
"Ozuma!" His mother called as her son ran past them and out the porch. "Ozuma,"
The mixed child collapsed onto the ground, dirt filling his mouth as he breathed heavily to roll onto his back. It wasn't over yet, he had to make sure it stuck.
With luck, Dawn was so fired up in coming after Ozuma she didn't notice that she had run outside right into the growing sunlight. She was affected instantly.
"AAAAHHHHH!" The girl backed away toward the house.
"Don't let her go inside!" Ozuma yelled, he backed away as fast as he could from her advancing.
Everyone was too horrified by what they were seeing to move. There really was someone in their home! The girl pressed her face into the dirt screaming like there was no tomorrow, trying to cover her head with the dirt for protection.
"Don't let her..." The boy began to cry. "Don't let her..." He laid his head back onto the dirt, completely drained. He looked into the whiteness that he guessed was the sun, and when everything went black though his eyes were still open. Ozuma could only scream.
