Chapter 6
*************************************
“Kai, can’t we train down at the
beach?” Tyson complained, studying the
bey-dish in the backyard critically.
“Is it me, or is this thing off balance?”
Kai glanced over from the duffel bag
full of wrist weights, ankle weights, and other useful training items. “Yeah.
There’s a rock under one corner.”
Tyson knelt next to the corner he’d
pointed out and scowled. “Where’d that
come from?” He lifted the dish and
removed the stone. “So can we?”
“What?”
“Train at the beach?”
“I’ll think about it.” Kai pulled out a set of weights for his
wrists and ankles, then a set for Tyson.
“Here. Put these on.” He tossed them to his boyfriend.
“Weight-training?” Tyson shrugged and began strapping on the
ankle-weights. “This should be
interesting.”
Kai watched him struggle to get the
one on his right wrist done up for a moment, then sighed and went over to give
him a hand. “Here. Hold still.”
Tyson gave him a sheepish
smile. “Ah…thanks. I’m not very good with my left hand yet.”
“We’ll have to work on that. You need to be able to use your left in case
of emergencies.” Kai did up the straps
quickly.
“Hey! Tyson? Kai?” They looked up as Kenny’s voice called out
their names.
“Out back, Chief!” Tyson yelled.
Glancing at his watch, Kai frowned
slightly. “They’re early. It’s only one thirty.”
“That’s not a bad thing, Kai.” Tyson pointed out.
Kai gave him a withering look in
return.
“Hey guys!” Kenny greeted them as he approached. Tyson smiled and waved.
“Hey Chief!”
“Where are Rei and Max?” Kai noticed they weren’t with Kenny.
“Uh…Rei’s still at home and I don’t
know where Max is.” Kai’s eyes narrowed
suspiciously at the nervous tone in Kenny’s voice. “Actually, I came early because I wanted to talk to you both
before they got here.”
Tyson stood and frowned in
concentration, trying to get used to the weights. “What’s up Chief?”
“Um…well, we stopped by yesterday
after school…to leave you your homework.”
Kenny clutched Dizzi and shuffled his feet guiltily.
Tyson blinked. “Where did you leave it? I haven’t seen it anywhere. Did you, Kai?”
“No.”
“Well, we sort of…got distracted…I
think we forgot to leave it behind…” Kenny was slowly turning pink.
Kai and Tyson stared at him, not
quite comprehending. “Distracted? By what?”
Kenny sighed and opened his laptop, calling
up something on the screen and turning Dizzi to face them. “That.”
The two bladers looked at the
screen, turned bright red, then looked at each other.
“Uh oh.” Tyson managed.
“Shit.” Was all Kai said.
Kenny snapped the laptop shut and
tucked it under his arm. “Listen. Before you kill me, hear me out…it was cute
and all yesterday when Max, Rei, and I found you and took the picture…but I’ve
been thinking that they’re probably going to do something with that
picture and I…I don’t want to invade your privacy like this so…”
“Relax, Kenny.” Kai sighed in resignation. He knew what Max and Rei were likely to do
with that picture. “There’s no way to
stop those two when they start up something like this.”
“We weren’t even…we didn’t…” Tyson
protested. “We were asleep! Nothing happened!”
“Yet.” Kai sent him a smug glance and Tyson sputtered in embarrassment.
“Damn it Kai!”
“Well…it’s the truth. Come on, Ty. They either would have figured it out eventually or we’d have
told them…someday.”
Kenny glanced back and forth between
them, his eyes going wide under his hair.
“Hold on a minute! You mean you
two really are…going out?”
Tyson made a strangled noise and
walked off, muttering to himself and leaving Kai to explain.
“Yes, Kenny. When you took that picture we weren’t. Last night though, sometime after you left,
we sort of talked about a few things.”
Kai looked over at Tyson, who was pacing back and forth near the small
pond, with a soft smile. “I love him,
Chief.”
Kenny saw the smile and nodded. “Yes.
I can see that it’s true.” He
came up to Kai and held out his hand.
“Just so you know, I’m happy for you both. And I’ll support you guys all the way.”
Kai shook his hand. “Thanks, Chief. It means a lot.”
“So, about Max and Rei…”
“I am so going to murder
those two!” Tyson stalked back
over. “You’ll help, right, love?”
Kai looked pained. “Tyson…I think we can come up with a
counter-attack. Let’s put off killing
them, okay? Besides, we need them for
the circuit.”
“A counter-attack? Like what?”
Tyson ran his fingers through his hair in agitation. Kai’s slow, evil smile, however, made him
feel a whole lot better. “Spill
it! I know that look. You’ve used it on me often enough.”
“Hmm…well, let’s just say I don’t
think you and I were the only ones…pining over each other.” Kai made a face. “ ‘Pining.’ That’s not
the word I want to use since I wasn’t pining away…”
Tyson shot him a wide grin. “We know what you mean Kai.”
Kenny tapped a finger on his lips,
considering. “You know, Kai, I actually
have to agree with you. About Rei and
Max, I mean.” He opened his
laptop. “What do you think, Dizzi?”
A yawning noise came from his
computer, followed by as sleepy female voice.
“I think I should be asleep.”
She grumbled.
Tyson leaned around to look at the
screen. “We were wondering if you had
noticed if Rei and Max are crushing on each other or not.”
An indelicate snort was his
response. “Crushing? I’d say those two are gone – to the
moon and back.”
“See. I’m not just imagining it then.”
Kai folded his arms over his chest.
“Okay. So how do we use that as counter-blackmail?” Tyson wanted to know.
Kenny glanced over his shoulder,
nervously. “It’ll have to wait
Tyson. I think they’re here.” Yep.
They could hear voices approaching from the front of the dojo.
Kai narrowed his eyes at Kenny. “Not one word about it to anyone,
Chief. That goes double for your smart
ass computer, too.”
“Smart ass?!” Dizzi’s voice rang out indignantly. Tyson laughed.
Kai ignored her. “And don’t mention anything about me and
Tyson either. We’ll tell them when
we’re ready.”
“I swear.” Kenny crossed his heart, then went to sit down and unruffled
Dizzi’s affronted feathers just as Rei and Max came around the corner, followed
by…
“Wyatt!” Tyson greeted the teen, waving.
“What’cha doing here?”
“I invited him along when I ran into
him on the way to get Rei and Kenny…or just Rei since Kenny had
disappeared.” Max grinned. “I hope you guys don’t mind.”
His grin turned a touch wicked,
which had Kai and Tyson exchanging a look and Kenny looking up and wondering if
he should disappear for a while.
Especially when he noticed the photo
album under Rei’s arm.
Kai noticed it too. “Tyson, let’s head this off right now, shall
we?” He gave Rei a very determined,
dangerous look and the neko-jin swallowed nervously.
Tyson stared at Max with a nearly
identical expression to Kai’s. “Good
idea.” He strode toward Max and grabbed
his hand as he passed, not pausing, and dragged the blonde blader along behind
him.
“What? Hey! Tyson…”
Kai pointed to a spot on the other
end of the garden, not taking his fiery gaze off Rei. “You. There. Now!”
Rei knew that tone well enough not
to protest and obediently walked over.
“We’ll be back in a few minutes,
Chief. Keep Wyatt entertained,
please.” Kai commanded – politely –
before stalking towards Rei.
“Kenny? What’s going on?” Wyatt
asked, serious confused.
Sighing, Kenny shook his head. “It’s all so complicated, Wyatt, that even I
don’t understand it all anymore.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inside the dojo’s training room, Max
was sitting on the floor, watching anxiously as Tyson paced back and forth.
“Ty? What’s wrong? Did I do
something?”
“No. But you were going to.” Tyson plunked himself down in front of Max, sitting cross-legged
and folded his arms over his chest. He
gave Max a hard stare. “Whatever it is
you and Rei were planning to use those pictures for, you can forget it.”
Max’s bright blue eyes widened and he
gaped at Tyson. “W…what? How did you…”
Tyson waved that away. “Doesn’t matter. What does is that if you think you’ll get away with using those
pictures…think again.” He smiled then,
a very evil glint lighting up his midnight blue eyes. “Because if you do, I’ll tell Rei all about
how much you like him…”
Max paled, then blushed red as a
lobster.
“You wouldn’t.”
“Oh yes. I will.”
Max slumped and to Tyson’s surprise
and chagrin, tears spilled from his friend’s eyes. Tyson frowned, wondering if it was real or a clever ploy to gain
his sympathy and trick him somehow – something Max was very good at.
“Max, those better be for
real.” Max began to sob and threw
himself into Tyson’s arms. “Ooph. Hey.
Maxie? Come on! Tell me what’s wrong?”
“It’s…it’s…Rei!” The blonde wept. “He doesn’t like me! I
don’t think he ever will! Not the way I
want him to!” He buried his face in
Tyson’s shoulder and cried. Tyson
rolled his eyes (where Max couldn’t see) and sighed, hugging his friend
tightly.
“Shh…okay. Calm down, Max, and tell me why you think he’ll never like
you back.” Tyson rubbed his back
soothingly. He figured it was because
Max didn’t know Rei was bi-sexual or something.
“Because he told me had a crush on
both you and Kai!” Max wailed
brokenly. He didn’t notice that Tyson
had gone stiff. “He thinks of me as a
little brother!”
He did notice when Tyson suddenly
pulled away and exclaimed, “He WHAT?!” in a very loud voice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(A/N: Before I get shot, let me just say this is NOT
a Ty/Kai/Rei fic in any way, shape, or form.
Got that! I’m just being my
typical self by throwing in a problem or two…this is mainly for Rei and Max’s
benefit and has nothing to do with Ty or Kai.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rei sat down on a large rock, eyeing
his apparently pissed off captain apprehensively. “Uh…what did I do? Or not
do?” He asked warily.
“It’s not what you did – or, only
what you did. It’s what you were going
to do.” Kai’s crimson eyes flicked to
the photo album on Rei’s lap. “You will
NOT use that picture of Tyson and I as blackmail or to embarrass us in any way. Got it?”
Rei’s jaw dropped open, golden
feline eyes going wide in shock. “How
did you…”
“Not important. Do you understand me, Rei? In case you don’t, then perhaps it’s time
Max learned the truth about how you feel for him.” Kai threatened.
“Max?!” Rei sputtered, now even more shocked – and a little
confused. “What are you talking
about?”
Kai narrowed his eyes and Rei shrank
back. “You like Max, Rei. I know it.
Tyson knows it. Hell, Dizzi
knows!”
Rei stared at him incredulously, a
small laugh escaping. “Are you
serious? You guys really think that I…like
Max?” He shook his head, laughing at Kai’s
expression of doubt. “No way.”
Kai frowned. “You’re bi, Rei. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t go for him because he’s a guy.”
Rei rolled his eyes. “Of course not. Don’t be dumb. I wouldn’t
go for him because he’s like a younger brother to me. Besides, I’ve had my eyes on someone else.”
Kai’s frown deepened. This was not how things were supposed to be
going. “Okay…so if it’s not Max, then
who?”
Rei flushed and looked away,
refusing to meet Kai’s eyes. “I’d
rather not say. I already know my feelings
wouldn’t be returned.” He tried, but
Kai would insist on knowing and would push until he gave in.
“Rei…” Kai’s tone was a warning.
“You and Tyson, okay?” Rei blurted, drawing his knees up to his
chest and hugging them, avoiding Kai’s gaze adamantly. “I can’t help it!”
“You…” Kai was, in a word,
pole-axed. “Gods. Rei…”
“Don’t say it. I already know you and Tyson are
together…obviously you know I know because of the picture. I’m happy for you both, honestly. It’s just a silly crush. I’ll get over it.” Rei rambled, clutching his knees tighter.
Kai might have said something else
but the sky suddenly going dark and some rather black clouds forming out of
nowhere grabbed his attention.
Then he heard Tyson’s voice from the
dojo say, “He WHAT?!” and Kai paled.
Oh dear
Gods…
Thunder rumbled and Kenny and Wyatt
hurried over. “Should we go
inside? I think we’re in for a…storm…”
Kenny trailed off at Kai’s pale face and Rei’s slightly red, slightly confused
look. “Kai?”
“We have a problem.”
Tyson appeared at that point,
stalking out of the dojo and dragging poor Max along behind him. Kai sucked in a breath and heard the others
gasp in awe because Tyson was glowing.
That same, hazy blue aura shimmered around him and his eyes blazed like
lightning, filled with cold blue flames.
Overhead, lightning crashed and a loud clap of thunder was enough to
shake the ground and make everyone wince.
“Rei…”
“Yes, Kai?”
“I suggest you make a run for
it.” Kai quickly determined his priorities
– the first of which was calming his irate Dragon down before he did something
destructive. When the hair on every
part of his body stood up and the air began to crackle with static electricity,
he barked, “Go!”
Rei was off the rock and gone in an
instant, calling on his feline speed and trusting that Kai knew what he was
doing (which he didn’t but Rei didn’t know that) to make a quick getaway. Max watched him disappear around the corner
and sank to the ground when Tyson released him, still crying silently.
“Kenny. Wyatt. See to Max. I’ll handle Tyson.”
The two brunettes obeyed quickly,
taking Max inside, not arguing or asking any questions.
Kai held Tyson’s gaze as he walked
towards his Dragon. “Tyson, you need to
calm down. I don’t know if you’ve
realized it or not but something is happening to you.”
“Calm down?! Have you gone mental?” Lightning flashed overhead and the wind
picked up, blowing Kai’s scarf madly and messing up their hair. “Do you know what Max told me just
now? He told me that Rei has a thing
for both of us! That he has a
crush on you is bad enough but me, too?! He’s breaking Maxie’s heart, Kai!”
Kai nodded. “Yes.
I agree. I know, Tyson. We’ll deal with this, I swear. But right now, you have to calm down. Look at yourself, Ty-love. Look at the sky.”
Tyson glanced at his hand, and gaped
in surprise, then looked up at the sky.
The blue light surrounding him abruptly disappeared and Tyson stumbled
slightly. Kai caught him and hung on,
nuzzling Tyson’s neck in relief as the sky began to clear.
“What did I…how did I?” Tyson clung to the Phoenix, feeling slightly
dizzy and, at the same time, euphoric and exhausted.
“I don’t have an answer for that,
Ty-love.” Kai replied, running the
fingers of one hand through Tyson’s slate black hair that had gone kind of
spiky. “Gods. You scared me for a moment.”
“Sorry.” Tyson nuzzled Kai back and gave him a long kiss. “Thanks for not letting me do something I
would have regretted.”
Kai smiled and kissed him back. “That’s my job, after all.” He took a deep breath and sighed. “Hmm…you smell good…like ozone after a
summer storm.”
Tyson chuckled. “If you say so. Know what you smell like to me?”
He pressed his face to the crook of Kai’s neck, inhaling and smiling slightly. “Like…fire…spicy…” Tyson licked Kai’s neck
above the scarf, feeling Kai’s hands drift down to his waist and tighten, his
pulse speeding up under his lips.
“Mmm…taste like it, too.”
“Tyson…” Kai groaned. “Damn!
Don’t start something we can’t finish, lover.”
Tyson pulled away reluctantly and
sent him a mock pout. “Ruin my
fun.” He grabbed Kai’s shirt-front and
yanked him forward a bit, planting a hard kiss on the Phoenix’s mouth, tongue
delving deeply to stroke Kai’s. Then he
released Kai, both teens panting Kai’s crimson eyes glazed slightly.
“Let’s go fix this, Kai. We have to help Maxie.”
“Yeah.” Kai managed, allowing his Dragon to take his hand, lace their
fingers together, and pull him into the dojo to find Max, Kenny, and Wyatt.
Chapter 7
*************************************
The second Tyson walked through the
door and spotted a distraught Max, he instantly felt guilty and ashamed. He ran over to the blonde and dropped to his
knees next to him.
“Maxie! I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t
have lost my temper like that! I’m so
sorry!”
Kenny gently tugged Wyatt aside and
let Tyson spill out apology after apology.
Kai, surprising them all (except Tyson), knelt down beside his teammates
and brushed a stray lock of Max’s hair from his face, murmuring a quick, “Shut
up, Tyson.”
Tyson snapped his mouth shut and
wiped away the tears that had spilled over.
Max stared at them for a moment, before
giving them a tiny smile. “So you
really are together.” He observed. Tyson and Kai flushed, but nodded.
“Yeah, Maxie.” Tyson sniffed. “I’m sorry.”
“No, Ty. Don’t be. There’s nothing
for you to be sorry about.” Max hung
his head. “You can’t control Rei’s
feelings.”
Kai sighed and exchanged a look with
Tyson before gently enfolding the young teen in a comforting embrace. “Don’t worry, Max. We’ll help you. I
promise.”
Max stared up at him with shocked
blue eyes. “Kai?”
Wyatt gaped, Kenny raised an
eyebrow, and Tyson…well, just grinned and winked at his lover.
“Ha! I knew it! There is
a big softy in there somewhere!” He
crowed.
Kai frowned, a light blush staining
his cheeks under his shark-fins. “You
don’t have to broadcast it, Ty-love. I do
have a reputation to maintain.” He
released Max, who sat up and rubbed at his eyes, gritty from crying.
Kenny couldn’t help but
comment. “’Ty-love?’” Snickering when Tyson and Kai turned bright
red.
“Shut up, Kenny.” Tyson grumbled.
Max laughed a little. “Leave them alone, Chief. I think they’ve had enough torture from
us.” He angled his head curiously at
Kai. “So how did you plan on
helping me?”
Tyson yawned widely, stretching out
and lying with his head pillowed on Kai’s lap.
Kai looked down at him. “Comfy?”
“Very. I’m sort of tired, Kai.”
Kenny cleared his throat. “Which brings up my question: What the heck
is going on?”
Kai looked thoughtful for a moment,
running his fingers absently through Tyson’s hair. The Dragon closed his eyes with a smile and made a purring noise
of contentment before answering Kenny.
“We really aren’t sure, Chief.” Tyson explained how he’d talked to Dragoon
that morning, and Kai added in what he’d seen.
Kenny and Dizzi took notes and filed away the data for future analysis.
“Fascinating. And you’re going to teach Kai the meditation
technique you used to talk to Dragoon?”
He inquired.
“Yeah.” Tyson replied, sleepily.
Kai, still playing with Tyson’s
hair, glanced at Max. “I think you
should teach Max and Rei, too, Tyson.”
“Sure. It’s not hard to learn.
It may or may not work though.
The bit-beasts won’t speak to you unless they think you’re ready
for it.”
“Really?” Max looked hopeful. “Oh
man! It’ll be so cool to get to
talk to Draciel!”
“Chief, would you go find Rei and
drag him back here?” Kai asked. “I think it’s safe now. And I want to have a little chat with him.” His crimson eyes flashed dangerously. Then he looked down at his lap when a soft
snore followed his request and the Dragon shifted restlessly.
Tyson had fallen asleep and was now
lying on his side, hugging one of Kai’s legs and had his face buried in the
inside thigh of that leg. Kai blushed
and sweatdropped, sighing in resignation.
Kenny snickered again, getting to
his feet. “By the time I find Rei and
get him back here, Tyson should be awake, right?”
“Yeah.” Kenny accepted Kai’s answer and hurried off, leaving Dizzi with
Max since he could move faster without dragging the laptop with him.
Wyatt made to follow him, but froze
when Kai’s cold, distant voice spoke his name.
“Wyatt. You stay
here. I’ve been meaning to ask you a
few things.”
Nervously, the brunette turned back
and sat down again, watching Kai warily.
No matter how much Kai had seemed to have changed, Wyatt couldn’t
quite believe he’d changed that much – not for real.
Max frowned at his captain. “Kai…” He gave the Phoenix a worried
look. This was Kai’s ‘interrogation’
voice.
Kai spared him a quick glance before
pinning Wyatt with his intense crimson gaze again. “Relax, Maxie.”
“W…What did you want to know?” Wyatt asked.
“You can start, Wyatt, with what the
hell you’re doing at our school – A public school. Why aren’t you at Whitney Prep anymore?”
Wyatt gave him a completely surprised
look. He’d thought Kai knew
already. “Whitney Prep is gone,
Kai. When you were pulled out, your
Grandfather…”
“Voltaire.” Kai’s eyes and voice went flat and
ice-cold. “I am not that
bastard’s relation.”
Wyatt flinched and nodded quickly, holding
his hands up defensively. He hadn’t
known that was a sore spot. “Uh…after
you left, Voltaire also pulled his funding. Without it, the school couldn’t run on what little income it had
left so it closed down.”
Kai’s eyes closed and he growled
something unintelligible under his breath.
Seeming to sense Kai’s agitation, Tyson stirred a bit, reached out
blindly and grabbed Kai’s hand, pulling it to his lips and nuzzling. Kai looked down at him and couldn’t help
smiling softly, the expression transforming his whole face. He brushed away Tyson’s hair from the
sleeping Dragon’s face and Tyson sighed happily, snuggling Kai’s leg closer.
Max smiled at them. They were completely meant for each other
and it warmed his heart to see them so close and content. His smile drooped a bit, though, when he
couldn’t stop himself from wishing he had that with Rei.
Kai looked back at Wyatt, eyes
hardening once again. Max was a little
confused. He knew Kai didn’t trust
anyone but his team, Gramps, Mr. Dickenson, and Tyson’s Dad. But he wasn’t sure why Kai was so suspicious
of Wyatt.
“I see.” The Phoenix said, finally.
“So why are you here?”
“I moved back to Scotland for a
while to live with my Mother while I was in school.” He shrugged. “Then my
Father wanted me back here in Japan, so…here I am.”
Kai looked unconvinced. “Really.”
Wyatt glanced at his watch. “Uh…I had better go. My Father is expecting me to be home at
four.” He stood. “I’ll see you on Monday at school.” He dusted himself off and walked out.
“See ya, Wyatt!” Max called after him. Kai just watched him go.
Max sighed and turned to Kai. “You didn’t answer my question, Kai.”
Kai nodded. “I know.
I was getting to it.”
A loud yawn drew their
attention. “Getting to what?”
“Awake again?” Kai smiled at Tyson, who gave him a sleepy
grin and sat up, snuggling back against Kai’s warm chest and pulling his arms
around his waist, holding them there.
“Sorry, guys. I couldn’t help it.” Tyson leaned his head on Kai’s
shoulder. “So what’d I miss?”
Kai nuzzled Tyson’s hair and said,
“Not much. We were just about to talk
about how to help Max. I sent the Chief
to go find Rei and bring him back.”
Tyson scowled and Kai kissed his
cheek with a laugh. “You’re so cute
when you’re jealous.”
“Kai!”
“Well you are.”
Max grinned and shook his head at
them.
“Listen, Max, I think the problem is
that Rei hasn’t taken a really good look at you lately.”
“He thinks of me as a younger
brother.” Max looked down at his hands.
Tyson linked his fingers with Kai’s
and squeezed. “I agree with Kai. You’re the youngest of us, Maxie – not
including Kenny, of course. Rei hasn’t
had a chance to accept that you’ve grown up.”
“So what do you suggest I do?” Max looked up, blonde hair flopping over his
eyes.
“Maybe we could…” Tyson was cut off
by the phone. He got up and went to
answer it.
“Hello?”
“Tyson? It’s Mr. Dickenson.”
Tyson blinked in surprise. “Mr. D!
Nice to hear from you!”
“And you, Tyson.”
“So what can I do for you?”
“Well, as you know, the tournament
circuit will be beginning in a month.
As the current World Champions, the Bladebreakers have certain social
obligations to observe.”
Tyson blinked. “Uh…maybe you should talk to Kai about
those, sir. He’d understand better than
I would.”
Mr. Dickenson chuckled. “If you think so, Tyson.”
Tyson looked over at his
teammates. “Hey, Kai! It’s Mr. D.
Come talk to him and do the leader thing.”
Kai stood in one fluid movement and
strode over, taking the phone from Tyson and greeting the CEO of the BBA.
“Hello, sir. What’s up?”
“Ah, Kai. As I was telling Tyson, the team has some social duties to
perform before the tournament circuit starts in a month.”
“I see. Such as?” Kai
frowned. The downside to being the best
meant he was forced to appear in public on occasion.
“There will be a few
press-conferences and so far there is only one exhibition match you and the
team are scheduled for. However, that’s
not for a couple of months, so don’t worry about it. There’s going to be an official BBA gala next week. The Bladebreakers are invited to attend, and
I’m sure that many of your friends from other teams will be attending as well.”
“I will talk it over with the team,
sir, but I’m sure we’ll be attending.”
He looked at Tyson, who was nodding fervently and pointing at Max
surreptitiously. Kai waved him away and
Tyson nodded back.
“Excellent! I have to go, now, Kai. I’ll email the details to Kenny.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you for calling.”
“No problem. Take care, Kai.” Mr. Dickenson hung up.
Kai walked back over to Max and sat
again, Tyson following and sitting behind him, draping his arms over Kai’s
shoulders and resting his chin on top of Kai’s head.
“So what did Mr. D. want?” Max inquired curiously.
“There’s going to be a party next
week to kick off the season, and we’re invited.” Kai told them, leaning back contentedly in Tyson’s arms. “What were you waving and mumbling at me
about, Ty-love?”
“Well, this party would be a good
excuse to work on Max – you know, to make Rei sit up and take notice of him.”
“What do you mean?”
“No offence, Maxie – but you still
have this distinctly ‘little kid’ look to you.”
Max glowered at him. “What’s that mean?”
“Well, I think Rei still thinks of
you as a little brother because you still look like one – like you did
four years ago.” Tyson studied him
critically. “Before you freak out on
me, buddy, you have to realize that I know you’re not a little kid anymore. Kai knows, Kenny knows, even Rei knows…but
he just needs to be reminded.”
Slightly mollified, Max looked at
his captain for his opinion.
“He’s right, Max. It wouldn’t be much of a change. Dress you up a bit differently, maybe cut
your hair a bit…”
“My HAIR?!” His hands rose to pat at his head in horror.
Tyson burst out laughing and even
Kai smiled a bit at his reaction.
“Hahaha! Max, you sounded just
like Rei!”
Max glared and Tyson laughed harder,
falling over.
Kai glanced at him, rolled his eyes,
then looked back at Max. “I’ve got an
idea for this party.” A rather evil
gleam entered his crimson eyes.
“Something that will definitely get Rei’s attention.”
“What?” Max asked, cautiously.
“We’re going shopping tomorrow,
Max.” He replied, thinking. “Part of it is that we all wear something that’ll
mark us as teammates but still look as if it’s part of our outfits.”
Tyson picked himself up and tugged
on Kai’s scarf. “Let me guess…scarves.”
Kai grabbed his scarf out of Tyson’s
hands and flicked it over his other shoulder.
“Good boy! See? You aren’t as dumb as everyone thinks you
are.”
Tyson gave him a glare, grabbed the
front of his shirt and yanked Kai towards him, planting a hard kiss on Kai’s
mouth. “Ooph!” Kai fell into his lap and stayed, quite
happy to be there, really. All sense
and clarity went out the window as Tyson’s tongue slid inside to stroke
his. Kai made a little sound of
pleasure and kissed back, attacking Tyson’s tongue with his own.
“Ahem.” Max cleared his throat, eyes wide. “Uh…guys?”
Tyson broke off and stared into
crimson depths gone dark and hot. Kai
sucked in a breath and growled, “What was that for?”
“Better than smacking you for that
little comment, don’t you think?” He
purred.
They stared at each other
hotly. Max rolled his eyes and tried to
keep from giggling at them.
The door to the dojo opened and in
walked Kenny and a rather hesitant Rei.
Kenny eyed the two lovers and
glanced at Max. “What happened?”
“Oh…the usual disagreement, that’s
all.” Max couldn’t help it. He started giggling, earning both Kai and
Tyson’s attention. They looked away
from each other (though Max noticed Kai moved closer to Tyson and Tyson wrapped
an arm around Kai’s waist and pulled him closer until they were hip to hip).
“Come on in, Chief…Rei.” Tyson invited, his hold on Kai
tightening. Rei noticed and was careful
to keep his distance – images of a glowing Tyson flashing through his mind.
Kai told them about Mr. Dickenson’s
call and what Wyatt had told him and Max.
Then came the explanation for Tyson’s little episode.
“I’ve been thinking, Kai, about
that. I need to do some more research
and a bit more analysis but I think I’m beginning to understand it.” Kenny opened Dizzi and typed in a few
commands, checking his email. “Oh
hey! Here’s the details for the party
next week.”
“So where is it, Chief?” Max crawled over to look at the screen.
“It’s here in Bay City. Mr. D. says a bus will come pick us up here
at the dojo and take us to the hotel where we’ve got a suite reserved for us
for the weekend.”
“When does the bus come?” Rei asked.
“Uh…Friday evening at 5:00 pm.”
At this point, Kai decided to bring
up his idea about their clothes. “We’re
going to this thing in style.” He
stated.
They looked at him. “What do you mean?” Kenny asked.
“In a word…” Kai dropped his
bombshell on them with a wicked grin.
“Leather.”
Chapter 8
*************************************
“LEATHER?!”
The incredulous cries echoed in the
training room.
Rei eyed their captain
curiously. “I don’t have a problem with
that, Kai. I just wasn’t expecting to
hear you suggest it.”
Kenny sat there looking like a fish
out of water. “M…m…ME?! In leather?!”
“You’re not serious.” Max stared at Kai in shock. Kai raised an eyebrow at him, then looked
pointedly at Rei, then back to Max again.
“Trust me, Maxie.”
Tyson snapped his mouth shut and
shook himself out of the instant hentai daydream he’d had – featuring Kai in
leather. “I’m in!”
Kai glanced at him with a wicked
grin. “I figured you would be.” He leaned in and whispered in Tyson’s ear so
the others couldn’t hear. “I can’t wait
to see you in a pair of tight leather pants, Ty-love. And I can’t wait to peel them off of you…”
Tyson went bright red and
shuddered. He chuckled and pinched
Kai’s hip where his hand was resting, arm still curved around his lover’s
waist. “Ditto.”
Max and Kenny snickered at them and
Rei just lowered his gaze and studied the floor.
Kai cleared his throat, a faint pink
blush staining his cheeks. “So we’re
all agreed?”
“Well…” Kenny began.
“Come on, Chief! I think it’ll be perfect!” Max nudged him and gave him a pleading
look. “If I have to, then so do you.”
Kenny sighed, giving up.
“Alright. That’s settled. We’ll all
go shopping tomorrow. Okay? I know a couple of stores where we should be
able to find everything.” Kai patted
Tyson’s knee. “You ready, Tyson?”
“Huh?” He looked confused for a moment.
“Oh, yeah! Sure.” Tyson leaned over and gave him a quick kiss
on the mouth before getting up. “I’ll
get our blades, Kai. You explain it,
okay?” He ran off.
“Explain what?” Rei asked, sounding a bit dejected. Kai’s eyes narrowed, but he ignored it. He’d talk to the neko-jin later.
“Tyson’s going to teach us the
meditation technique he used when he talked to Dragoon this morning!” Max explained excitedly. “He thinks it will help us to talk to our
bit-beasts!”
“Maybe.” Kai held up a hand. “We don’t know for certain, Max. Remember, they won’t talk to us unless they
think we’re ready for it.”
“May I suggest we do this down at
the beach?” Kenny spoke up. “Judging from what’s occurred with Tyson, I
think it would be wise to be away from anything that might get damaged.”
Kai nodded. “Yes.
Good idea, Chief.”
Tyson returned and they stood. “We’re headed for the beach, love.” Kai told him, taking Dranzer from the
slate-haired teen.
Tyson beamed. “Cool!
Let’s go!” He grabbed Kai’s
hand, laced their fingers together, and pulled Kai towards the door. A bemused Kai followed along, a small smile
on his face.
On the way to the beach, Rei and
Kenny walked ahead of Kai and Tyson.
Max tagged alongside them.
“Hey, Kai?” He asked.
“About the leather…”
Kai glanced at him. “What about it? Trust me, Max. When it
comes to leather, I know what I’m doing.”
Tyson sent him a teasing grin. “Somehow, I’m not surprised.”
Max giggled and Kai shrugged. “I trust you Kai. It’s just that…leather clothes are expensive, right? I mean, I know how much a leather jacket
costs so clothes can’t be much cheaper.”
“Don’t worry about it, Maxie. I can afford your clothes.” Kai assured him.
“How?” Max looked very confused.
Tyson let out a laugh, grabbing Rei
and Kenny’s attention. They stopped and
gave their teammates questioning looks.
“What’s so funny?” Kenny asked.
Kai gave Tyson a look and
sighed. “A little less than a year ago
Voltaire’s estate was liquidated.” Kai
explained. “Since he’s in jail, the
money came to me. It’s in a trust fund
that I’ll be able to access when I turn twenty-one. Until then I get an…allowance.”
His boyfriend continued to
snicker. “A very handsome
allowance.”
Max’s eyes went wide. “I see.
Wow, Kai. I don’t know what to
say.”
“Don’t say anything.” Kai told him. He tugged on his Dragon’s hand and started walking again,
ignoring the surprised looks on his teammates faces.
Tyson gave him a side-glance. “You know, you never cease to amaze me,
lover.”
Kai looked at him. He could hear the others come running behind
them. “Why do you say that?”
“Very little shocks you or scares
you, and damn near nothing embarrasses you.”
Tyson squeezed their linked fingers.
“But your wealth does embarrass you.
When it comes to blading you’re them most arrogant, prideful guy I’ve
ever met – and with good reason.” The
Dragon grinned. “Yet when it comes to
fame and fortune you’re more humble than a priest.”
Kai growled something and
blushed. “Oh, shut up.”
Having gotten in the last word – a
very rare occurrence – Tyson shut up.
Once they reached the beach, they
waited for their instructions from Tyson.
“Gee…” He scratched his cheek as he
thought. “What would be the best method
for this?” He mused aloud. “Okay, let’s all sit in a circle.”
They all sat down on the warm sand
in a circle, knee to knee. Kenny sat
behind Tyson and Kai, opening Dizzi and getting ready to monitor the whole
thing.
“So what now?” Rei asked, curiously.
Tyson took out his blade and
launcher. “Everyone launch your blades
right in front of you.” He did just
that and Dragoon spun happily in place.
The others followed his lead and soon Draciel, Driger, and Dranzer were
spinning alongside Dragoon. “Okay. Now, everyone close your eyes and focus all
your thoughts on your blade, and the spirit within. Ignore everything else around you and concentrate.”
Rei, Max, and Kai closed their eyes
and did as Tyson coached them to do.
Tyson watched them for a moment, glanced back at Kenny, who gave him a
thumbs up and a nod, then turned his attention to his own blade.
{Dragoon?} Tyson called, silently.
{Hello, Master Tyson!} Dragoon’s deep, powerful voice replied
cheerfully. {What’s up?}
{Oh, the usual. The sky, the stars, the clouds…} Tyson
joked. Dragoon chuckled. {Actually, I was just teaching the guys here
how to use the same meditation technique I use to talk to you. They want to speak to their bit-beasts.}
{They do know that Draciel, Driger
nad Dranzer won’t talk to them if they feel your friends aren’t ready for it
don’t they?}
{Yes. I told them. I think
they’re ready. I have faith in them,
Dragoon. But I’ll get back to them in a
moment. About us…}
{Ah yes…your power.} Dragoon gave him a mental nod. {Don’t worry, Master Tyson. You were meant to wield the powers of
storm – of Air.}
{I don’t understand! Why me? How are you so sure?}
Tyson frowned. {I don’t get
what’s going on.}
{Calm down, Master, and allow me to
explain.} Dragoon shushed him.
{Sorry, Dragoon.} Tyson apologized. {I’m just confused and a little afraid.}
{I know. Listen, Master Tyson: this new power has always been yours. It’s part of your very being – something you
were born with. That power is the reason
I was able to leave that sword and join my spirit to yours. We are of the same power, Master – we are of
Air, you and I.}
{I still don’t completely
understand, but if you’re sure, then that’s good enough for me.} Tyson sighed.
{I am sure. If I may, Master Tyson, I must tell you how
proud I am of you and your friends.}
Tyson smiled. {Thanks Dragoon. We make a good team, don’t we?}
{Yes. I completely agree. Oh
and Master Tyson?}
{Yeah?}
{I very much approve of your
mate. He is also a part of your destiny
and he will need you in the future.}
Tyson’s smile widened. {I appreciate that, Dragoon. He is a hot catch isn’t he?} He mentally wriggled his eyebrows at the
spirit and was rewarded with a delighted laugh.
{It’s only fitting, Master, that
your mate should be the chosen master to my mate.}
“Say what?!” Tyson exclaimed aloud. “Dragoon!”
He got a very embarrassed image of
Dragoon, blushing bright red, in return.
{Uh…perhaps I should not have blurted that out. Forgive me for startling you, Master Tyson.}
{No, don’t apologize. It’s alright. I just wasn’t quite prepared for that.} Tyson chuckled. {And
Dragoon?}
{Yes Master?}
{Quit calling me ‘Master.’ We are teammates and friends.}
{As you wish…Tyson.}
While Dragoon and Tyson were
conversing, Kenny was watching his friends carefully, making sure Dizzi took
readings and analyzed everything for later.
He watched his friend begin to glow once again and Kenny glanced up at
the sky. But there was no storm brewing
this time. Interesting. It seems that this new power responds to
Tyson’s emotions.
Kenny nearly jumped out of his skin
when Tyson suddenly cried out. He hand
no idea what Dragoon had said but he wasn’t going to interrupt to find out.
Max was frowning in concentration, all
his focus put on his blade. He was
concentrating so hard he didn’t even hear Tyson’s exclamation. He could feel something inside his blade – a
powerful, elusive presence that slipped past his senses whenever he thought he
had a firm grip on it.
He growled in frustration, then took
a deep breath and shook himself slightly.
Okay, Max. He told
himself. Patience. You can’t force things to happen. Now, try again and concentrate. He let out his breath slowly, relaxing all
his muscles.
And then…he found he was intensely
aware of the sea, the sound of the waves lapping the shore gently, a faint
roaring in his mind. What…what is
that?
{It’s your power, young
Master.} Someone told him. The voice was light, strong, and almost
fluid-sounding. Max’s eyes opened in
shock and he stared at his blade, which was glowing with a purple light.
{Draciel? I…is that you?} Max asked
hesitantly.
{Yes, Master Max. It is an honor to finally speak to
you.} Draciel spoke softly.
{Oh! Oh wow! I…I did it!} Max grinned excitedly. {The honor is all mine, Draciel! It’s so cool to finally meet you!}
The ancient Tortoise chuckled. {Such energy you have, young Master. Was there anything in particular you wished
to know?}
{Gosh, Draciel! I have so many questions! I don’t know where to start…}
Their conversation continued, much
similar to the discussion Dragoon and Tyson had.
Rei sat between Kai and Max with his
head bent and arms folded over his chest.
The technique Tyson had described was a simple one, and one he was
familiar with. It was similar to the
one he used in his own meditations. So
getting into that state was easy enough.
He focused his attention on his blade, as Tyson had told them to, but
there didn’t seem to be anything there – just his blade spinning away in place
before him.
After several minutes, he was
startled out of his meditative state by Tyson’s exclamation. Deciding to ignore it for now, Rei continued
to focus on his blade.
Suddenly he felt a strong, pulsing
beating in his mind. Frowning in
concentration, Rei followed the sound, and came to realize it was a
heartbeat…no, several heartbeats. His
own, certainly, but also Max’s, and Kai’s, and Tyson’s, and Kenny’s too,
pounding alongside his own. However,
there were two more heartbeats that he couldn’t identify. One beat was pulsing a lot quicker than this
teammates’ and his own. The other was
slower, deeper, and more powerful than anything he’d ever felt or seen before.
What is that? He asked himself, reaching out mentally
without even knowing it. Why does
that sound seem to be calling to me?
It wasn’t tangible but somehow that rhythmic beating recognized him and
he suddenly was immersed in it, merging with it. A voice in his mind, a growling, triumphant voice, spoke then.
{It is time. Greetings, my Child.}
Feeling slightly dizzy, Rei
responded carefully. {Greetings to
you…who are you? And…what’s happening
to me?}
{You know me, Kitten. I suspect you’ve always known. But you’ve refused to believe and accept
your purpose. Why?}
Rei sighed, partially in relief
because the dizziness was fading, and partially because he did know whom he was
talking to. {You’re entirely too clever
for your own good, Driger.}
The tiger-spirit snorted. {Suck it up, Kitten. You have things to do and no time to sulk.}
{Sulk?!} Rei replied indignantly.
{I do not sulk. Are you
going to explain things to me or am I supposed to figure them out for myself?}
{Ah…} Driger nodded. {There is my tiger! I knew you were in there somewhere. Yes, I’d be happy to explain. But before I do, I must tell you to disabuse
yourself of the feelings you believe you have for the Dragon and the
Phoenix. They are not meant as
your mates…either of them. I’m sure you
can see that for yourself.}
Rei let out a growl {So now you’re going to interfere in my love
life?!}
{What love life?} Came the sarcastic reply.
“AGH!” Rei vented his frustration in a low scream of annoyance and got
up, walking off a little distance and gesturing wildly while muttering to
himself. Kenny watched him, startled,
then grinned when Rei’s blade went trailing along behind, glowing green.
The last of the team was scowling
darkly at his blade. Kai had gone into
the meditation state easily enough and he could feel Dranzer’s presence, but he
couldn’t reach the Phoenix spirit. As
far as he could tell, it wasn’t because he wasn’t trying hard enough or because
Dranzer didn’t want to speak to him…it felt as if something was blocking them
from each other.
“What is that?” He muttered under his breath. Kenny glanced up from Dizzi.
“What Kai?” He asked, though he wasn’t expecting an
answer.
Tyson opened his eyes and looked
up. He smiled when he saw that Max was
glowing and apparently deep in conversation with his bit-beast. He blinked at the spot where Rei had been,
then looked around in confusion until he spotted the neko-jin still talking to
himself and waving his arms around, the green aura surrounding him pulsing and
changing hues.
“Hey! It worked!” Tyson clapped
his hands in excitement.
“Well, it seems to have worked for
Max and Rei.” Kenny said from behind
him. Tyson glanced back over his
shoulder.
“What do you mean, Chief?”
Kenny pointed at their captain. Kai was still trying to figure out what was
blocking him from Dranzer, and while the blade was…
“Is it just me or is Kai’s blade on
fire?” Tyson stared at it in awe.
“No, Tyson. It’s been like that for a while now.” Kenny affirmed.
“But if it’s glowing – or burning –
like that, then Kai should be able to speak to Dranzer. And judging from the others, Kai should be
glowing too.”
“Something’s wrong.” Kai said, not opening his eyes.
“What is it?” Tyson asked.
“There’s something getting between
me and Dranzer. I can feel him calling
out to me in return but…I can’t reach him!”
“Dizzi! See if you can figure this out?”
Kenny asked his laptop.
“I’ll get right on it, Chief!”
{Dragoon! Have you got any ideas here?}
Tyson asked his bit-beast. The ancient
spirit responded, {No. I can sense a
very strong presence coming from Kai and his blade, but it is neither Kai nor
Dranzer. It’s something else.}
{Can you tell what?}
Dragoon growled in
consternation. {No! It seems familiar for some reason… but I
can’t seem to figure it out!}
{Okay…don’t get your tail in a
twist. We’ll figure it out. You just think about it for a while.} Tyson turned to Kai. “Kai?
Dragoon says it feels familiar.
Can you tell if it feels that way to you?”
Kai’s frown deepened and he
nodded. “Yes.” Kai gave himself a mental shake and turned
his focus on the source of the blockage instead of Dranzer.
Suddenly, everything went dark and
silent. He couldn’t see the beach
anymore, and he couldn’t hear…anything.
Panic began to well up. He felt
just like he had once a long time ago, back at the abbey.
No…not this again! This can’t be the sensory deprivation
chamber again! Kai let out a moan
and grabbed his head. NO! I’m on the beach…with Tyson and my
team! The past is gone!
There was a flash of light to his
left. He turned towards it eagerly,
wanting anything to help him remain calm.
The light flashed again, and this time he could just barely make out an
image.
Dranzer? He called, hesitantly. It had looked like a Phoenix.
{Kai…}
Hello? Who’s there?
{Kai! You know me! Please…}
I don’t… Kai saw the light
flash again, only this time he could see it more clearly and it held. My God!
It can’t be! Kai took a step
backwards, away from the creature before him.
{Please, Kai! Hear me out…I swear, I will not harm you.}
{Why should I? You…you’re…}
{I’m trying to help you! I promise you, Master Kai, I am not as I
once was. You and your team have shown
me another way…a better way.} Kai
blinked in surprise as the creature grew smaller and less intimidating then
landed on the ground (if there was ground, he couldn’t see it) in front
of him. {You are my Master, Kai. And it was me who has been sending
you the dreams and visions. I was
trying to warn you…}
Kai stared at the little firebird
suspiciously and knelt down until they were eye to eye.
{All right. You’ve got my attention…Black Dranzer.}
Chapter 9
*************************************
Tyson’s hand hovered over Kai’s
knee. He was debating on shaking his
Phoenix to get his attention so he could find out if Kai was all right or just
leaving him alone. He’d recognized
Kai’s blank expression as the same one he got when the vision hit. But this time he seemed different. He hadn’t freaked out yet, like he usually
did, for one thing.
“Chief? What do we do here?”
Kenny studied Kai’s readings as
Dizzi provided them. “Don’t do anything
yet, Tyson. His readings are
normal. The only thing strange is that
his brainwaves are…”
“In dummy-speak, Chief.”
“Uh…he’s dreaming.”
“Okay. So we wait?”
“I think it would be wise.”
Rei came back over and sat down
again, his blade still following him around.
He closed his eyes and tried to ignore Driger’s presence, but it
didn’t work very well.
{You might as well listen to what
I’ve got to say, Kitten. You can’t get
rid of me, you know.} Driger said. Rei frowned. The tiger-spirit sounded vaguely hurt.
{Fine. I’m listening.}
{Good. Now, that loud pulsing you hear?}
{Yes. What is that, Driger? I
recognized the others as my teammates’ heartbeats and my own, but the other
two…}
{One of those is mine. The faster one.}
{That makes sense. And the other one?}
{That is the Earth’s ‘heartbeat,’
Kitten. The movement of the planet as
it spins around the sun.}
Rei sucked in a breath. {How?
How is it possible that I can hear that?}
{It is your power, Rei. Tell me, what element do you associate with
Tyson, after seeing what he can be capable of?}
{Storm. He seems to be able to control the weather.} Rei opened one eye and glanced at Tyson, who
was still hovering over Kai anxiously.
{That’s partly correct. Tyson is Air, as is Dragoon.}
{I see. And Kai must be Fire, then.}
{Hmm…} Driger purred his
approval. {You’re catching on,
Kitten. And Max is Water.}
{And I am Earth.} Rei finished. {Why me? Why any of us?}
{It is what we were put here to do
and be, little neko-jin. It is a great
responsibility but I know you’ll do just fine.}
{I’m glad one of us is so
positive.} Rei muttered. {What exactly are we supposed to do?}
Driger frowned. {As of yet, I’m not entirely sure. These things don’t come with instruction
manuals, after all.}
Rei sighed. {Great.
Why did I get the sarcastic, know-it-all for a bit-beast?}
{That’s ‘Sacred Spirit,’
Kitten.} Driger huffed
indignantly. {And I’m not the
know-it-all. That’s Dizzara.}
Rei opened his eyes and looked at
Kenny, who had his face nearly plastered to the screen. {Dizzy?
So…does that mean she’s a part of an element too?}
{No. Well…kind of. Dizzara and
Kenny are Ether –
Spirit, if you will. Spirit brings
order to chaos, is the sum of all knowledge.
Without Spirit, there would be no laws to govern the universe. You know, little things like gravity.}
{Wow.} Rei felt kind of stunned at that but not really surprised. {Somehow, that fits the Chief though.}
Driger’s growling chuckle was his
answer.
Max’s smile was a mile wide as he
chatted happily with Draciel. The
ancient tortoise was perfectly happy to listen to his partner’s excited
chatter, and answered Max’s questions when he finally got around to asking
them.
{You said something about my ‘power’
before, Draciel. What is it?}
{Master Max, you felt very aware of
the sea, did you not? You could feel
it’s ebb and flow, the pull of the moon on you and the ocean?}
{Yes. I don’t understand how that is possible.}
{It is because you and I are of
Water, young Master. Your power is linked
to that element, just as the young Dragon is of Air, the Phoenix of Fire, and
the neko-jin of Earth. Even your little
friend Kenny is linked to a power, though, it is more mysterious than any other
and is not of an elemental nature.}
Max blinked in surprise glancing at
Kenny. {The Chief? That means Dizzy too, right?}
{Yes. Dizzara is an Ether Sacred Spirit. Ether is knowledge, law, and order in chaos. Without it the universe would not exist.}
{That’s so amazing, Draciel! But what are we supposed to do with all
these powers?}
{This I do not know, Master
Max. We five were not given much
information to work from, only that we had to seek out each of you – our
Guardians – and help you whenever needed, however needed.}
{WOW!} Max exclaimed, full of awe.
{I’d never imagined anything like this!}
{That surprises me, Master. I’ve noticed you have a quite vivid
imagination – and an active one, too.}
Draciel chuckled.
Max blushed. {Draciel!}
{Oh dear…} The tortoise gestured at
Rei and Driger. {It appears as though
the neko-jin resists his power. I hope
Driger can get through to him. He will
be needed in the future.}
Max looked at his not-so-secret
crush. Rei sat cross-legged once again,
eyes closed with a scowl on his face, and drummed his fingers in agitation on
his other arm, as they were folded over his chest. His blade continued to pulse different hues of green and Rei’s
own aura pulsed along with it.
{Why does he fight it,
Draciel?} Max asked, a little worried.
{Rei, I have noticed, does not like
it when someone or something tries to tell him what to do. He is very much a free spirit. Destiny and fate are not concepts that he
ascribes to.} Draciel frowned at his
partner in concern. {What is wrong,
young Master? You seem very sad all of
a sudden.}
Max looked away from Rei and stared
back down at his blade. {Do you know of
Rei’s…crush on Tyson and Kai?}
{Ah. Yes, I do.} Draciel
nodded in understanding. {I see. Do not worry, young one. Driger will set him straight in time. And I’m sure neither Tyson nor Kai return
any such sentiments towards Rei.}
Max sighed heavily. {No.
I know. They’re too gone on each
other.} He smiled a little. {Actually, Tyson and Kai are really cute
together. I just wish…} He slid a
side-glance at Rei.
{Time, young Master. Give it time. Patience is, after all, one of your strong suits.}
“Any change Chief?” Tyson asked, not taking his eyes off his
lover.
“No. He’s still dreaming and his readings are holding steady.” Kenny replied. “If I had to guess, Tyson, it appears as if he’s used the
meditation to take control of the visions somehow.”
“If he did do that,” Tyson’s brow furrowed in concern. “Then I hope he finds whatever he needs to
know.”
Kai stared directly into the little
firebird’s eyes, unflinchingly. {Well?}
{I don’t know much, Master
Kai.} The dark Phoenix began. {All I have to go on is what my power has
picked up on and been told to me.}
{Which is?}
{The four Sacred Spirits of Earth,
Water, Fire, and Air are in danger.
Someone or something is after them.
Which means that they are also after the four Chosen Guardians – you and
your teammates.}
Kai snorted. {That’s nothing new. Someone’s always after our
bit-beasts.}
Black Dranzer shook her head and
made an urgent sound. {No! This is different! This is not merely some humans messing around in the realm of
science and technology as Biovolt was.
This is pure evil, Master, and I beg of you not to let down your guard!}
Kai stared at her. He could feel her fear of whatever it was
and she was actually trembling. {You’re
serious.} He said, shocked. {I don’t understand you, though. Why do you warn me? What do you care?}
His jaw nearly dropped right to the floor
when she spoke, a single, crystalline tear dropping to their feet. {Because you are my Master, Hiwatari Kai,
and because my elder brother is one of the four Sacred Spirits. I do not wish for him to be hurt.}
{You’re older brother? You mean…Dranzer?} Kai asked, incredulously.
{Yes. We never knew each other, you see. He was already gone and searching for you when I came to
be.} She spread her wings wide. {I was not born ‘Black Dranzer,’ Master
Kai. That name was given to me by
Voltaire and Biovolt when they captured me.
I was very young and had no way of defending myself, much as you and the
other children were at the Abbey.}
Kai’s heart clenched. {I never knew.}
{No. Of course not! How could
you? From my capture onwards I was
conditioned until I became the dark spirit you first met me as. That darkness taints me always now. My feathers…} She ruffled them for emphasis
before lowering her wings and settling everything back into place. {It has been long enough that I no longer
remember what color I was born.}
Kai sat down on his butt. Hard.
He sighed and continued to stare at her, feeling just a little
overwhelmed at all the new information.
{This is a great deal to take in…} He paused. {What was your name before Voltaire changed it?}
She looked at him, a small smile
reaching him through their mental link.
{My name was…Drisana (1).}
Kai nodded slowly. {It fits you. I will call you Drisana from now on, if you don’t mind.}
{Truly?} She sounded so much like an eager little child that Kai couldn’t
help but smile gently at her.
{Yes, Drisana. Just one thing…if you would, please stop
blocking Dranzer from me!}
{Oh! Of course! I’m so
sorry!} She shook herself slightly and
Kai blinked, for suddenly he was back on the beach, the sun blasting his eyes
and a concerned Tyson hovering right next to him. Kai watched as the hazy image of Drisana faded away then looked
to his boyfriend’s worried face.
“I’m alright, Ty-love.” Kai smiled, raising a hand to cup Tyson’s
cheek. “You worry too much.”
“That’s my job.” Tyson sighed in relief. “So?
Are you going to tell me what just happened?”
Kai dropped his hand and shook his
head. “Soon. I just have on thing to do first.” He thought for a moment. “Well, two things really.” Kai looked to his blade and sent out one
probing thought, forgoing the meditation all together. {Dranzer?}
{Master Kai! Oh thank the Gods! What happened? Why
couldn’t I reach you? Are you okay?} The extremely flustered Phoenix bombarded
Kai with questions.
{I am fine, my friend, and you have
but to look into my mind to see what happened.} Kai reassured him. He
felt a slight jolt as Dranzer probed him mentally for explanations.
{WHAT?!} Dranzer screeched in complete shock.
“AH!” Kai slapped his hands over his ears and glared at his blade. “Damn it!
Dranzer, don’t yell like that!”
Kenny, Tyson, Rei, and Max jumped,
staring at their captain as he glared at the furiously spinning blade that
suddenly began to give off bursts of flame, a hazy reddish orange aura
surrounding Kai. His crimson eyes
turned ruby red as his power, Fire, took hold.
{I apologize, Master Kai, but Black
Dranzer is…she is…} Dranzer stammered in disbelief.
{Your sister, Drisana, yes, and
she’s not evil anymore – never actually was. Or at least, no more than I was.}
Tyson inched closer. He could feel waves of heat emanating from
Kai. He had always found the Phoenix to
be unnaturally warm to the touch, even when Kai was at his coldest, but this
was different. He shivered a bit. He had a hard enough time keeping his hands
off Kai at the best of times. That heat
attracted Tyson even more and all he really wanted at that moment was to dive
in and roll around in it.
“Gods…” Tyson snapped himself back
to reality, got up and waded into the sea, leaning over and dunking his head in
the cold water. He could hear Dragoon’s
amused laughter ringing in his mind.
{Oh, stuff it, Dragoon! I’m sure
you’re no better with Dranzer!}
Kai watched him, feeling quite smug,
really.
{Honestly. You two are worse than Dragoon and I.} Dranzer drawled. Kai’s
attention slid slowly back to his blade and he angled his head at it curiously.
{You and Dragoon, huh? Why doesn’t that surprise me?} Kai shrugged. {Getting back to things, are you okay? About Drisana, I mean.}
{I…I’m not sure.} Dranzer replied honestly. {It’s just such a shock. I would very much like to meet her. Perhaps then I could figure out how I feel
about all this.}
{Hmm…how would we do that?}
{Well…there might be a
way. Ask Dizzara, Master Kai.}
Kai looked at Kenny. “Kenny, ask Dizzy if she knows of a way for
two bit-beasts to meet each other without having to battle.”
“I heard!” Dizzy’s voice rang out before Kenny could even open his
mouth. “And the only way I can think of
would be for the bit-beasts to take on physical form.”
Max gaped. “They can do that?”
Rei raised both eyebrows in
surprise. “Interesting. But what do you want to know for, Kai?”
Kai held up a finger. “In a minute. Tyson! Get back over
here.”
Tyson came back but stayed near
Kenny, his slate-blue hair dripping.
Even at that short distance, he could still feel the heat radiating from
Kai.
{Dranzer? You heard that?}
{Yes, Master Kai. It could work. I’ve never tried to take physical form before, but I’m willing to
try.}
Kai gave him a mental nod of
encouragement. {I’ll get the others to
try first. If they can’t then we’ll
know that you and Drisana probably won’t be able to either.}
{If you think so.}
“Okay, Tyson, Max, and Rei, I want
each of you to talk to your bit-beasts and try to get them to take on physical
forms.” Kai instructed.
“Kai, are you sure about this?” Max asked nervously.
“Yes. Trust me, Maxie.”
“You’ve been saying that an awful
lot lately.” Max muttered under his
breath. Rei heard and glanced at him
curiously.
“We’ll try it. Just one question: How?” Tyson folded his arms over his chest and sat
next to Kenny.
Dizzy spoke up again. “To take on physical form, a bit-beast must
have a human counterpart. Through that
person, we can manifest ourselves on the physical plane.”
Kenny goggled at his laptop. “Dizzi!
That’s not in my data! How do
you know all that?”
“Uh…” The trapped spirit sounded a
bit confused. “I’m actually not sure,
Chief. It’s strange, but until Tyson
asked the question, I didn’t know either.”
“Through us? What does that mean?” Rei wondered aloud. Driger responded.
{I think I know. May I?}
{I guess.} Rei assented, warily. His
blade suddenly spun faster and the green aura surrounding him and his blade
grew brighter and brighter. Driger came
out of his bit-piece, still in spirit form and stared at his partner.
{This first time might be somewhat
painful, Kitten. I apologize in
advance…} Driger warned, before gathering himself and plunging directly through
Rei.
Rei gasped and cried out, a sharp
pain jabbing through his right shoulder.
He fell forward, ending up on his hands and knees, fingers digging into
the warm sand. Faintly, as if from a
great distance, he could hear his teammates’ concerned voices asking him if he
was all right. Then, quite clearly, he
heard Max’s voice cry, “Look!”
With effort, Rei sat up on his
knees, wincing at the pain in his shoulder, and turned to look where Max was
pointing. His golden eyes went wide and
he blinked slowly at what he saw.
“Driger?” He asked in awe.
On the sand a couple of feet behind
him sat a tiger cub – white, with green stripes and gold markings. The cub stood shakily and took a few halting
steps towards Rei. {This is going to
take some getting used to.} Driger’s
voice mused.
Rei crawled forward to meet his
partner halfway, picking up the tiger-cub and staring into its feline eyes that
were a soft, golden-honey color similar to Rei’s own.
“My God, it is you!” He exclaimed. Driger began to purr, a loud rumbling, and reached out with one
paw to touch Rei’s cheek softly.
//Hello, Kitten. I had not thought to meet you face to face
like this so soon, but I am glad I have.//
“I could hear him!” Max said in surprise.
“Me too!” Tyson and Kenny chorused.
Kai just blinked at Rei and Driger, something on Rei’s shoulder catching
his eye.
“Rei! Your shoulder!” He
exclaimed, pointing.
Max crawled over and frowned. “Wow!
Your shirt’s got a hole in it!”
He inspected it more closely.
“Huh? Hey Rei? Did you have a tattoo here before?”
“What?” Rei put Driger down and turned his head, twisting his body to try
and look over his shoulder. “No! I don’t have any tattoos!” He pulled his shirt off and heard his
teammates gasp.
“Well, you do now.” Kai said dryly. Indeed, Rei had a small tattoo the size of a man’s fist on his
shoulder. It was an image of Driger.
The tiger meowed in apology. //Sorry about that, Kitten. I didn’t know that would happen.//
Rei rolled his shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. It could have been worse, I suppose.//
“I like it, Rei! I think it looks cool!” Max reached out and barely touched it. Rei closed his eyes and shivered a little,
not because it hurt, but because…
He liked it.
AGH! Bad! Not good thoughts!
He berated himself.
Kai smirked to himself, noticing
Rei’s expression of self-annoyance.
“Okay, Max! Your turn!”
Max’s eyes went impossibly
wide. He looked down at his blade. {Uh…Draciel?}
{I am ready, Master Max.}
{That’s great but can you do me a
favor?}
{What’s that?}
Max blushed. {Do you suppose I could have something other
than a tortoise as a tattoo?}
Not offended, Draciel laughed. {I’ll try, Master.}
Just as Rei’s had before, Max’s
blade spun faster and as Driger had done, Draciel emerged from his bit and
slammed into his partner.
Max cried out and fell backwards,
landing on something hard. “Ow! That hurts!” He complained.
Rei (to Tyson, Kai, and Kenny’s
amusement) was at Max’s side in an instant, helping him to sit back up
again. The blonde flinched at his
painful movements, then looked around for his partner. “Draciel?”
//I’m here, young Master.//
Max turned around and found a small
tortoise right behind him. Max grinned
and clapped his hands in delight, scooping up the tortoise easily.
“Hey! Draciel!”
Driger wandered over and cocked his
head to the side, eyeing the tortoise with interest.
Max turned around and sat, settling
the tortoise in his lap. Rei pulled the
flap of Max’s torn shirt back and studied the tattoo. “Well, Maxie, you didn’t get a tortoise.”
“Yeah? What do I have?” Max
asked.
“It’s the Kanji for Water.” Rei traced the symbol with a fingertip. Max flinched away.
Rei drew back his hand. “Oh.
Sorry, Maxie.”
“No. It’s all right. It’s just
a little tender, that’s all.”
“My turn!” Tyson cried.
“Tyson, take off your shirt
first.” Kai advised. “Don’t need to wreck any more clothes.”
Tyson shrugged and drew it off over
his head, revealing his toned stomach and chest. Kai swallowed and tore his gaze away. “Uh…maybe you should keep it on after all.” His boyfriend blinked at him innocently, a
wicked twinkle in his eye. Kai just
returned the look.
{Tyson…} Dragoon nudged him
mentally. {Brace yourself.}
“Kenny?” Tyson moved his gaze to his blade.
“Yes, Tyson?”
“Get out of the way.” He said as his blade burst into blue flame
and Dragoon appeared. Kenny scrambled
out of the way just in time as dragoon dove through Tyson in an unseen blur of
sudden speed. Tyson’s breath came out
in one sharp yell and he fell forward, unconscious.
Kai crawled over immediately,
reaching out to his lover, but his hand stopped when he saw Tyson’s back. He sucked in a sharp breath.
“Gods!”
“Kai! Is he okay?” Kenny and
the others rushed over, Driger and Draciel sitting on the sand side-by-side and
watching in concern.
“I…I don’t know.” Kai’s eyes took in the image of the dragon
spirit etched across Tyson’s shoulder blades and sinuously crisscrossing its
way down to Tyson’s waist, disappearing under the waistband of his shorts. He looked up, eyes drawn to the side by a
movement. His gaze met the magnificent
blue one of the Dragon, who was smaller than Kai would have expected but still
much larger than either Draciel or Driger.
//He will be fine, young
Phoenix.// Dragoon slithered over and
curled around Tyson’s shoulders, his long body draping over his partner’s and
his tail twining securely around Tyson’s waist. //I will watch over him.//
Kai nodded slowly, brushing away a
stray lock of Tyson’s hair from his face.
He reached into his pocket and palmed the bit that contained Drisana’s
spirit. Then he ripped his own shirt
over his head and looked Max, Rei, and Kenny in the eye.
“Let’s get something straight,
before I do this.” He held out Drisana’s
bit and they recoiled, gasping in fear.
“Kai!” Max exclaimed, frowning at the bit. “We didn’t know you still had…that!”
“Where else would be safe enough to
keep her, Max?” Kai sighed. He’d expected this.
“He’s got a point, Max.” Rei laid a hand on his shoulder.
Kenny frowned. “I hope the explanation for this is a good
one, Kai.”
Dranzer’s blade came over to Kai and
spun by his knee, waiting patiently.
“I’ll tell you all about it,
Chief. After Tyson wakes up.” Kai slid his fingers into Tyson’s hair,
stroking gently. “I want him to hear
this, too.”
Chapter 10
*************************************
Tyson woke groggily. “Ugh.
What the hell hit me?” He tried
to push himself up but his back ached and something was curled around him – and
it was kind of heavy. “And what’s on
me?”
“Shh…go easy, Ty-love.” He heard Kai’s voice nearby and felt his
hand running through his hair. “That’s
one wicked tattoo you’ve got on your back.”
“What’s that weight on me?” Tyson managed to prop himself up on his
forearms, then he yelped as the weight suddenly moved and the stormy blue gaze
of a dragon was staring him in the face.
Tyson’s eyes went wide as saucers.
“Dragoon?”
//Hello, Tyson. How do you feel?//
“In a word? Ow.”
The dragon chuckled and helped Tyson
to sit up slowly. “How long was I out?”
“Not long.” Kai handed him his shirt and Tyson eased
himself back into it, wincing at his movements. “I was just about to explain this to the others.” He held out Drisana and Tyson raised an
eyebrow.
“Okay. But what does Black Dranzer have to do with anything?”
Rei gave him a startled look. “You aren’t surprised?”
“No. I knew Kai had it.” Tyson
reached up and absently rubbed Dragoon’s head.
The dragon curled around his shoulders and made a purring sound. Driger padded over and Rei picked him up,
cuddling him and nuzzling his fur for comfort.
Max looked down as Draciel crawled into his lap and nudged him.
“Well, to start off, this little
firebird’s name isn’t really Black Dranzer.
Her name is Drisana, and it turns out she’s Dranzer’s little
sister.” Kai told them everything
Drisana had told him. When he finished,
there was a moment of silence.
“Holy…crap.” Kenny’s jaw dropped open.
“Ditto.” Came Dizzi’s voice from his laptop.
Kai looked down at his palm. “I know you have a hard time believing her
or trusting her, but the truth is that she’s just like me.” Kai looked up again, meeting their gazes one
at a time and allowing them a rare glimpse into him as they’d never had before
– except Tyson, who smiled gently at his lover. “You taught me about trust, friendship, and second chances. I’m willing to give Drisana a second
chance. Will you?”
Max, Kenny, and Rei exchanged
glances, unsure what to do. Tyson took
Kai’s hand, the one holding Drisana, and brought it to his lips, kissing the
back of it softly. “Tyson?”
“If you can give her another chance,
then that’s enough for me.” Tyson said
firmly.
“And if Tyson can, then so can
we.” Rei spoke for the rest of them.
“Thank you, guys.” Kai smiled at them gratefully before turning
his attention to his blade and the bit in his hand. “Dranzer! Drisana!”
The two Phoenix spirits rose out of
their bits, one fiery red, the other glossy black. The others watched in awe as the two firebirds went for Kai in
one swoop, bursting through him in an explosion of heat and pure power. A ring of fire formed around them, burning
bright and intensely.
Two high screeches filled the air
and Kai bent over in pain. They had
slammed through his stomach at the same time, knocking the breath out of
him. Wincing, he sat up again and took
a deep breath, re-opening his eyes.
Tyson smiled, basking in the glory
Kai was radiating. Dragoon raised
himself up and purred a greeting as one of the firebirds settled himself on
Kai’s right shoulder, ruffling his feathers.
//Hello Dranzer!//
Dranzer cocked his head at Dragoon
and returned his mate’s greeting. //Hey
‘Goon!//
“’Goon!?” The team chorused. Tyson
started snickering when his dragon blushed and grumbled under his breath.
Kai shook his head and held out his
wrist. “Drisana. It’s okay.”
The dark Phoenix landed and eyed everyone warily. Kai could feel her fear of them all and he
hastened to reassure her. “No one’s
going to harm you, little one.” He
shared a smile with his teammates. “My
team and I believe in second chances for those who wish to change.”
//I thank you all. And I am truly sorry for my past deeds. I promise I will do all that I can to help
you now.// She shifted on Kai’s wrist
anxiously.
//We believe you, little
sister.// Dranzer said, his beak clicking. //It is a pleasure to finally meet you –
outside of a beystadium.//
Drisana ducked her head shyly. //It is my honor to meet you, Revered Older
Brother.//
Kai lifted her to his left shoulder
and she settled down. “Now that we’re
all here and done what we came here to do, it’s getting late. We should all head home so that we get our
rest for tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” Max blinked in confusion. “Oh!
Shopping!”
“Okay. Let’s get going then.”
Tyson gave Dragoon a final pat on the head. “Back to your blade, buddy.
You can’t be seen by others.”
//As you wish, Tyson.// Dragoon nuzzled Tyson’s cheek affectionately
before uncurling himself and vanishing.
“I wish you could stay out, Draciel,
but Tyson’s right. It’s best that none
of you be seen.// Max patted Draciel’s
shell.
//Okay, Master Max! I’ll still be with you.// Draciel bobbed his head once then
disappeared, too.
Driger purred at Rei and batted at
his ponytail playfully. //I’m watching
over you, Kitten. Be good!// Then he was gone. Rei growled and shook his head.
“Why me?” He inquired of the
air.
Kai called for his blade and it came
obediently to his hand. He held it out
in a silent request for his bit-beasts to return.
//Do you mind sharing, my
brother?// Drisana inquired. //I promise not to be a bother.//
Dranzer chuckled. //Not at all, little sister. In fact, I’ll enjoy having the company. Come on!//
He pushed off Kai’s shoulder and shimmered out of view. Drisana nodded at them once more before
following.
When Kai looked down at his blade,
he smiled, for now he had two Phoenixes imprinted on his bit.
“Welcome to the team, Drisana.” He said quietly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kai kicked off his shoes and was
about to head to the kitchen to get something to eat when he was assaulted from
behind by an eager Tyson. Kai grunted
when he was gently shoved back against the wall. Before he could say anything the Dragon’s mouth came down on his
– hot, wet, and hungry.
He released a helpless moan and
lifted his arms to wrap them around Tyson’s neck and shoulders, opening his
mouth to Tyson’s insistent tongue.
Tyson’s hands skimmed down his chest and fumbled at Kai’s belt for a
moment, getting it undone and carefully unzipping his back cargoes.
“Mmm…aaaaah!” He gasped out as Tyson’s hands delved into
his pants and stroked his hardening length through his boxers. “Uhnnn…oh God!”
Tyson tore his mouth away and kissed
back along Kai’s jaw to whisper in his ear.
“Have you got any idea how much I wanted to just jump you and fuck you
blind out on the beach?” He moved his
hands from Kai’s groin and slid them upwards under his shirt seductively,
massaging muscles with his fingertips as he went. “I can barely keep my hands off you most of the time but that was
just…”
“No more than I wanted you to…” Kai
rasped, feeling his knees threaten to buckle.
“God, Ty…bedroom…NOW!”
Tyson hummed in agreement and
removed his hands, grabbing one of Kai’s and dragging him to their room. As soon as they were through the door they were
all over each other, tumbling onto the nearest bed and mouths attaching to one
another. Clothes came off and went
flying in all directions.
“Oh yes…” Tyson’s hands skimmed over
Kai’s hips, spreading his legs wide and settling down between them to take Kai
into his mouth. Kai let out a yell and
Tyson hastily pinned his hips down to the mattress. He took Kai as deep as he could and purred in his throat when Kai
mewled desperately and writhed against Tyson’s hold on his hips.
“I…I…aaaaaaaaah! Tyson, stop! Please…” Kai panted.
Tyson looked up, eyes hot and needy.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing! I just want you inside me.
Right now! Play later…” Kai
stared down at him.
Tyson raised an eyebrow and crawled
up Kai’s form. “But I was having
fun!” He complained, a very wicked
glint in his eyes. Kai smirked back and
ran his fingers through Tyson’s hair, wrapping his legs around his lover’s
waist tightly. “Aaah…Kai…I won’t take
you dry.”
“You can. I don’t need anything!”
Kai could feel Tyson’s tip bump against his entrance and he shivered,
closing his eyes in anticipation. “Just
do it…”
Tyson dropped his forehead to
Kai’s. “Are you sure? I don’t want to hurt you…”
Kai rolled to the side, catching
Tyson by surprise and maneuvering until he was sitting on top of his Dragon,
the cleft of his butt nestling Tyson’s hard length.
“What? Kai?” Tyson blinked up at
him, startled. Then he sucked in a
sharp breath as Kai reached between them and guided Tyson’s length to his
entrance and pushed his hips down.
Tyson groaned as Kai slid over him, those slick walls gripping him and
making them both shiver in pleasure.
“Mmm…God you’re so tight! And so
beautiful…” Tyson watched as Kai flushed pink and his lips parted subtlety,
caught up in his ecstasy.
Kai looked down at the young man he
loved more than he’d ever thought possible.
“I love you, Tyson.” He
moaned. “Always…” He rocked his hips slightly,
crying out as pleasure sparked through his whole body. Tyson met the movement with a thrust of his
own and soon they were rocking together rhythmically. Kai bent forward, pressing his lips to Tyson’s as they moved, his
hands seeking out Tyson’s and their fingers linking together, gripping hard.
Their cries of completion rang out,
mingling and merging much as their sweat slicked bodies were. Tyson cuddled Kai close, nuzzling his neck
and licking away little beads of sweat.
“You okay, love?”
“Hmm…” Kai murmured, curling himself
around Tyson and sighing in feline-like contentment. “Oh yeah…”
“Lemme see your stomach, Kai.” Tyson trailed his fingers over the taught
muscles of Kai’s back.
“Comfortable.” Kai muttered, burying his face in Tyson’s
neck and clinging stubbornly.
“Aw, come on! I didn’t get a good look earlier.” He kissed Kai’s cheek. “I was kinda busy.”
Kai sighed and reluctantly rolled
off Tyson, who sat up and studied the Phoenixes on Kai’s stomach. “So?”
“I know they’re not real tattoos…”
Tyson leaned forward and gently pressed his lips to Kai’s navel, where the two
Phoenix images – one burning red and the other glossy black – circled his belly
button, looking so real it was as if they’d fly off his stomach at any
moment. “But they sure look like it!”
“What do you suppose Gramps will
say?” Kai asked, sitting up.
“I don’t know. But there’s not much we can do about
them.” Tyson shrugged.
“Hn. True.” Kai patted the
bed. “Lay down on your stomach so I can
get a good look at your tattoo.”
Tyson yawned and did so, stretching
out. Kai studied the dragon-spirit’s
form, tracing his sinuous curves with one hand. “I can’t believe it doesn’t hurt more. This cover’s your whole back, Ty-love.” Kai’s hand stopped on Tyson’s left butt-cheek and he
squeezed. “And it stops right here.”
Yawning again, Tyson motioned to
Kai. “Come back up here and rest for a
while, lover. Then we can go find
something to eat.” He slipped under the
covers and Kai complied, draping himself over Tyson’s back and resting his head
between his shoulder blades with a sigh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“TYSON! GET YOUR TIGHT-ASS BACK HERE WITH MY PANTS!”
Rei, Kenny, and Max stopped just
outside the dojo in shock. Kenny’s hand
was raised to knock at the door but Kai’s sudden yell of annoyance had made him
pause, hand hovering.
“Uh…I don’t think they’re ready
yet.” Max sweatdropped when a huge THUD
came from inside, followed by a startled yelp.
“Ah! Okay! Here!” Tyson’s voice was full of laughter. “Take them!
Just don’t do…” There was a soft moan and Max and Kenny blushed. Rei just sighed and shook his head. He nudged Kenny aside and knocked on the
door himself, hard.
Kai tore his mouth from Tyson’s and
glared at the door. “Who is it?” He called, wincing at the hoarseness of his
voice. Tyson’s eyes snapped open and he
looked at the door.
“It’s your team, Kai.” Rei called back, voice wry. “If you two are done making out, can we
please get going?”
Kai turned back to Tyson, kissed him
hard once more, then stalked off, pants in hand, to finish getting dressed.
Tyson watched him go then turned to
let his team in. “Hey guys!” He greeted them cheerfully. “Kai’s not quite ready yet.”
Max nudged him slyly. “We heard.”
He laughed when Tyson blushed.
Kai came back after a moment, and
they all followed him to whatever stores he hand in mind for their outfits.
The first stop was at a shop where
they created custom-made accessories.
After arguing over color, design, length, and other such details, the
Bladebreakers decided on plain white silk scarves, each one monogrammed with
their team logo and name at one end and the BBA logo at the other. Kai paid for the scarves and was told they’d
be ready by the end of the day for pick up.
The next stop was at a store where
they sold beachwear, sunglasses, etc.
“What do we need sunglasses
for?” Tyson wanted to know, picking out
a pair and trying them on.
“To protect your eyes from the
sun.” Kai replied, just a little bit
flippantly.
Max sniggered. “Hey!
I like these! What do you think
Rei?” He inquired of the neko-jin
innocently.
Rei glanced at him and smiled. “Looks good, Maxie!”
“Awesome! Hey, Kai? Can I get
these?”
“Whatever you like, Max.” Kai didn’t even look at the price tag. He was watching Tyson try on pair after pair
of shades.
Kenny just watched all of them. “I’ve got prescription sunglasses.” He explained when Tyson tried to get him to
try on a pair. Kai studied him for a
moment before asking, “Have you ever worn contacts?”
“Me?” Kenny squeaked. “No…”
“Huh.” Kai frowned, digging out his credit card again to pay for the
sunglasses. He snuck an extra pair into
the purchase, with the brunette genius in mind.
Their next stop? You guessed it! The optometrist. Kenny
was ushered, protesting weakly, away where the doctor did a few tests and gave
Kenny a set of contacts. Kai bought him
a six-month supply and all the necessary equipment – solution, a case,
etc. Then he handed Kenny his new
sunglasses.
“There you go. Try them for 6 months, Chief. If you don’t like them you can go back to
the glasses. “Kai told him, before
taking Tyson’s hand and pulling him off towards their next destination, leaving
Kenny sniffling in gratitude and Rei and Max a little stunned at their
captain’s generosity.
Kai led them into a brightly lit
store where he intended to get all their clothes. Pulling out his credit card once more, he sued the shiny
platinum-colored piece of plastic to flag down a sales person, who was at his
side in seconds with a huge smile on her face.
“Good afternoon, sir! How can I help you today?” She inquired like a good salesperson.
Kai gently pushed Tyson
forward. “Outfit him, if you
would. All in leather – we’re going for
mature style, not bikers or sluts.”
“Of course! I think I know just the thing!” Tyson looked back over his shoulder at his
lover with a raised eyebrow as he followed the woman around.
Kai turned back to his other
teammates, but found Rei missing.
“Where’s Rei?”
“Over there.” Max pointed, grinning. “Look at that! He’s already got an armload of stuff to try on.”
Kai blinked and shrugged. “I guess we’ll just leave him to it. As for you two, you’re mine.” He ushered them towards the pants section
first, grabbing things seemingly at random and piling them onto Max’s and
Kenny’s arms. When they were nearly
staggering under the weight of the clothes, he bundled them into the change
rooms. “Get busy, you two.” Kai glanced at his watch. “We’ve still got to get to shoes.”
“Shoes, too?” Tyson’s voice came from behind a closed
curtain. “Geez, Kai!”
“Yes, Tyson. Shoes. How’s it going in there?”
Kai asked, not trusting himself to just walk in.
“Well…they’re tight.”
“It’s leather, Tyson. They’re supposed to be tight.” Kai closed his eyes at the mental images.
“The pants are kind of
uncomfortable. What kind of underwear
does one wear with leather?”
“You don’t wear any, actually.” Kai’s grin was very wicked.
“None?!” Three startled voices cried.
Rei’s laughter answered them.
“He’s not kidding, guys.”
“Oh, Rei! You’re in here, too?” Kai
glanced at another closed curtain. “If
they need help, can you do it? I’m
going to go get my stuff.”
“Go ahead, Kai.”
“Kai!” Max called before he could turn away. “Come in here a minute, please?”
He popped his head out from behind his curtain.
Kai went in. “What?”
“Are you sure about this?” Max whispered, looking down at himself and
blushing bright red.
Kai gave him an appraising
look. “Hmm…yep. That’ll do just fine. Trust me, Max.” He flicked a finger over a lock of Max’s blonde hair. “You’re in luck. I guess we don’t need to change the hair after all.” He gently turned Max around to look in the
mirror. “Look at yourself, Max
Tate. Look at the man you’ve grown
into. Don’t you want Rei to see the
real you?” He asked, quietly, conscious
of Rei’s nearby presence.
Max stared at himself and swallowed
thickly. “Yeah. I do.”
He suddenly straightened and met Kai’s gaze in the mirror, blue eyes
turning hard with determination.
“Thanks, Kai.”
“Don’t mention it, Max.” Kai patted him on the shoulder. Then he turned and made a quick sweep of the
store for himself, knowing exactly what he wanted. After that, he went back to the change rooms and helped Kenny
decide on his clothes.
When everyone was done, the happy salespeople
rang up their purchases and the team headed off to a shoe store for footwear.
Basically they bought the same pair
of stylish leather dress shoes that looked more casual than dressy – in
black. Except Rei, who insisted on
white for himself. Kai also grabbed a
pair of soft leather boots for himself.
Tyson eyed those with interest. “What are you planning on wearing those
with?”
“I’ve got plenty of things these
will go great with.” Kai replied.
“Oh really?”
They stopped by the accessory shop
to get their scarves and then they stopped to get food – at Kai’s insistence
that he pay for it.
They sat around at the park near the
river eating their supper. Kenny
glanced over at Max and asked, “How did your parents react to the tattoo?”
Max giggled. “Mom nearly fainted but Dad liked it! I had to show Mom Draciel before she
believed that I hadn’t just gone out and gotten a tattoo.”
Rei laughed and looked at Tyson and
Kai. “What do you supposed Gramps will
say about your tattoos?”
Kai shrugged indifferently. Tyson took a sip of his soda before
answering. “I don’t think he’ll flip
out too badly. Besides, it isn’t like
we can do anything about them now anyway.”
“Good point.”
Kenny shook his head. “No offence, but I’m glad Dizzi stayed in my
laptop. I don’t think I could handle a
tattoo.”
“She’s a very special bit-beast,
Chief. Draciel told me she’s an Ether
Sacred Spirit.” Max told him everything
the ancient tortoise had told him.
“Wow! I never knew that!” Kenny
exclaimed. “Wait’ll I get home and tell
Dizzi!”
The sun was setting by now, a hazy
reddish orange light fading on the horizon.
The team split up, going their separate ways to prepare for their return
to school the next day.
