The Gundam Faeries
Chapter 1
The boy walked along the quiet path. The wind was eerily still, and not an owl hooted in the trees. The moon hung low in the sky, heavy and full. It was a time of faerie mischief, and most sane humans would have taken to their beds. No one had ever accused Duo Maxwell of being sane. Time and time again, he had laughed at the Gods, going so far as to claim to be Shinigami, the God of Death himself.
Duo wasn't sure why he was walking this night. He could have been home, asleep and dreaming in his bed. He only knew that he had been called. A feeling of being trapped had sent him out into the forest behind the safe house. A long braid swinging behind him, Duo glanced up at the moonlight. He huffed out a breath and stopped, his hands jammed into his pockets. This was ridiculous. Heero wouldn't be happy that Duo was possibly endangering their mis. D. Duo shrugged. Heero was never happy, and why that bothered him as much as it did he'd never know.
Duo smiled up at the silent orb of light; well, maybe he did know, but he'd be damned if he would ever admit it, even to himself. Duo sighed and started walking again, staring at the ground and kicking small pebbles out of his way. Why was he out here? What did he hope to find in the stillness between life and death? He stopped and looked up as he felt another presence on the path through the forest.
Duo squinted at the shadowed figure before him. /Is that Quatre? What is Quatre doing here?/ Duo was about to call out, when the figure abruptly vanished. Duo blinked, rubbed his eyes, and stared down the path again. /Nope, still gone. The hell?/
He turned around, heading back to the safe house, an overwhelming sense of fear and concern for Heero overriding even his formidable curiosity.
The boy hovered invisibly in the air, a smirk playing on his lips. /Yes, go to him. He needs you more than ever. Hurry, Shinigami, else you'll find him in your namesake's arms./ The boy's smirk melted into a frown. Now to the problem of how the braided boy had seen him. /That boy was mortal...wasn't he?/ His frown deepened /I must find out./ The boy's slightly pointed ears pricked. /Prince Trowa calls. I'll solve the mystery of the boy later./ With a wave of his hand, he disappeared into the suddenly alive night.
Duo started out walking towards the safe house, but was soon running towards it, his braid flying out behind him. A sick feeling coiled in the pit of his stomach. His suspicions were quickly confirmed when, as he neared the house, he saw in the sky thick, billowing smoke and the blazing red of fire. /Shit! Not again!/
His legs pumped faster and faster, and he pleaded to every deity he could think of that Heero was safe. He skidded to a halt at the entrance to the two-storey hunting lodge, and scanned the area. His heart hurt unbearably when he saw no sign of the Perfect Soldier. Without another thought, Duo burst through the front door and into the burning building.
The heat was nearly intolerable, but Duo ignored it, all his attention focused on finding the other boy. The stairs were miraculously untouched by the fire that seemed to be consuming everything else. He took the steps two at a time, and rammed his shoulder into the door to Heero's room. It splintered and he rolled, coming to a stop on one knee.
The smoke was so thick in Heero's room that Duo's eyes teared up, and he had to shove his shirt over his nose to breathe. He lowered himself to his knees and crawled to Heero's bed. /Dear God just let Heero be alive!/ He rose to a crouch and peered blurrily at Heero's bed.
/Yes!/ There he was, his pistol clutched in one hand, the other relaxed on the pillow. Duo shook Heero. /How could he sleep through all this?/
He thought his heart stoppedn hen he noticed the lack of breathing coming from Heero. /Smoke inhala. G. Got to get him out. Not safe enough to go back downstairs./
Duo picked Heero up carefully and looked around. /The window./ Duo took a couple steps back and ran for the window, Heero curled protectively in his arms. He sprung through the glass and turned mid-air, trying to offer Heero as much protection as possible.
When hndednded, all the air was pushed from his lungs. He wasted no time, and placed Heero on the ground and checked for a pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found it. It beat weakly, but it was definitely there. Duo pinched Heero's nose closed, and tilted up his chin. He took a deep breath and forced the air into Heero, trying to get Heero's lungs working again.
After what seemed like hours to Duo, Heero coughed violently; cobalt blue eyes opened to worried violet ones. Duo helped Heero sit against a tree and rubbed his back soothingly as Heero's body was wracked by coughs. When his body settled down, Heero took a shaky breath and looked at the still burning house. He looked back at Duo and asked in a smoke-hoarsened, but still monotone voice, "What did you do this time?"
Duo was insulted. Here he just risked life and limb to save Heero's life, and Heero had the gall to ask him what -he- did! "I didn't -do- anything! I was out walking!"
"Hn."
Duo stood up and paced restlessly. "Is that all you have to say?! I just saved your life you know! A k yok you would be appreciated!"
"Hn." Heero stood and faced the blazing structure. A thousand thoughts flew through his head. Mainly was how close he had been to dying. He mentally shrugged, nothing new. His peripheral vision caught Duo, hands on hips, foot tapping impatiently. From long practice, he ignored the braided Deathscythe pilot, and focused instead on possible causes for the fire. If Duo was out walking like he'd said, and Heero had no reason to think he was lying, then it was more likely Oz, or an accident. He looked in Duo's direction as Duo shouted, "Well! I'm waiting!"
"So I see. Where are the fire trucks?"
Duo's jaw dropped open at the abrupt change in topic. "Wha-?"
"The city isn't that far. The local fire station should have sent something. Where are they?"
Duo put a hand to hrow row and scanned the horizon. "Good question. Maybe they're on their way?"
"Hn, I don't think so."
Duo caught the direction of his thoughts, "OZ?"
Heero nodded. "Possibly. We'll know for certain when I can get in there and look around." He turned and climbed gracefully into a nearby tree.
Duo watched as Heero tucked his chin close to his chest and fell asleep. He turned back to the path he'd just left and kicked at the dirt. "Great, just great." He shuffled a little ways down the dirt road, but was stopped by Heero's voice.
"Duo."
He half turned, expecting a lecture, or a warning, but what he got shocked him to his very core. Heero's face was illuminated, except for his eyes, which were shadowed by the fire. An almost soft smile graced Heero's lips. "Thank you."
Rarely was Duo caught at a loss for words. This was one of those times. He nodded. "Uh, sure." He twisted back around and walked quietly back onto the path. /Well who knew. Mr. Perfect Soldier, Heero Yuy feels gratitude. How about them apples, ladies and gentlemen?/
Unconsciously, his feet traced his former route, and Duo found his thoughts captured by what he saw earlier. His brow furrowed. /I could have sworn that was Quatre on the road. But it couldn't have been since he's nowhere near here./ Duo's mind, not liking the direction it was going, abruptly supplied Duo with a picture of Heero asleep. Heero had looked peaceful in sleep, his features like those of a small child. Duo shuddered a little, remembering that the peaceful expression had almost been that of death.
Duo stopped dead in his tracks, head jerking up. /The hell? Thought I heard my name./ He listened intently, ears straining to catch the least sound. /There it is again./ His head swiveled around, looking for the source of the voice.
"I'm up here, Duo." The voice was a lilting silk and slid over Duo's skin like a caress.NervNervous, and a little more than scared, Duo looked up. Floating in the air, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, was Quatre. At least at first glance it was Quatre. This boy's eyes were as guarded and cold as Trowa's. His hair was a shade darker than Quatre's, more a dirty blonde than platinum. And his clothes! Jewel tones of green and blue mixed and swirled to remind Duo of the ocean. They seemed to consist of a pair of leggings and a flowing, pirate-type shirt, but somehow they were more. The boy lowered until his knee-high boots touched the ground, and then he stopped. His smile didn't quite meet his eyes, as he extended a hand. The same voice reached out, running over Duo's ears: "It's pleased I am to see you Duo. I am Quatre."
Duo shook his head. "No you aren't."
The boy nodded. "I am though. You are the muddled one. And that's understandable. Please come with md I d I will explain all to you."
"I'm not going anywhere with you!"
The boy's eyebrows lowered and anger flashed through his eyes, "But you must. Prince Trowa commands it, and I must obey, as must you."
"-Prince- Trowa? Is this some kind of joke, Q-man?"
Quatre shook his head solemnly. "I wouldn't joke about this. Our prince has commanded that you be brought before him, that he might question you."
Duo stepped backwards. "Yo, I don't know what's going on here, buowa owa is not my prince, and I'm not going anywhere except to sleep!"
Quatre tapped his foot and tried another tactic. "Aren't you curious at all, Duo? After all, it's not everyday you see someone floating in the air without some sort of machine. I'm offering you a chance to see the Underhill, the world of the fae, Duo, if you'll but take my hand."
Quatre smirked inwardly as he saw the gleam of interest in Duo's eyes. Duo eased forward. "Are you kidding me?"
Quatre shook his head.f cof course not, Duo. I don't lie, and I can prove" H" He raised his hand and tucked his hair behind an ear. Duo took another step closer, too entranced by the pointed ear to notice the predatory gleam in Quatre's eyes. /Just another few steps Duo, you'll be in my grasp and on your way Underhill, will you nil you./ Instead of voicing his thoughts he smiled, "Would you like to touch my ear?"
Duo grinned like a child in Wonka's chocolate factory. "Can I?"
Quatre nodded and watched as Duo took one step, and then two...
Heero couldn't sleep. His eyes opened, and he jumped out of the tree. He paced restlessly around the still smoldering ruins of the safe house. /Damn that -baka- and his soft lips!/ Heero growled and stared down the path Duo had disappeared onto. A warm chuckle behind him had him whirling around, gun drawn. Even after he recognized whom the laugher emanated from, he still did not put the gun away.
Wufei Chang's eyes danced with laughter aimed at Heero. "Are you going to shoot me, Yuy? I would think it a waste of bullets."
"Who are you? What do you want?"
Wufei laughed again. "You know who I am. As to what I want, that is a complicated thing, and quite unbelievable."
Heero kept the gun trained on Wufei as the other boy started pacing and speaking: "Two years ago our time, King Darlian was assassinated. His two children, Prince Trowa and Princess Catherine, started a war for supremacy."
Heero interrupted, "Get to the point."
Wufei glanced sidelong at Heero. "Got a strange feeling something's wrong with Duo? You're right. Recently, a supporter of Prince Trowa has been coming into your realm and stealing humans with latent fae blood. He brings them Underhill and drains them. Duo has fae blood, and Quatre has been sent to capture him. Quatre is very wily, and it's only a matter of time before he gets Duo. If Duo goes Underhill his very soul will be drained away, and he will fade away into nothing. If you love him at all, mortal, you must save him."
Heero growled and sprinted down the forest path. /-Shimatta!-/ He turned his head at the fluttering of wings, and nearly fell over. For once his training left him, and the emotion was clearly displayed in his dark blue eyes. There was Wufei, translucent grey wings on his back, flying nto Hto Heero. Heero stumbled, but regained his balance, and ran on.
He slid to a stop at the sight of Duo, locked in what looked to be a very passionate kiss with Quatre. One hand was stroking Quatre's slightly pointed ear, and the other flexed at Quatre's waist. Heero was surprised once again this night, by the pain and jealousy that tore through him.
Duo whimpered as the kiss stopped. His lust-enshrouded mind barely registered the words Quatre e. e.
Heero glared as the fae creature lifted his head and smirked. His aquamarine eyes were cold as death as he called to them, "You're too late, Lord Wufei! He's mine now!" Quatre turned his gaze on Heero. His mouth didn't move, but Heero could hear plain as day: "Don't worry Heero, I think I'm going to keep him for myself. I'll be back for you though. Real soon."
Heero could only watch helplessly as Quatre leaned down and claimed Duo's lips in another kiss. He felt someg rig ripple in the air, and then Duo and the faerie were gone.
