Chapter 2: Games
Kai sat down in the plump chair positioned so carefully in his lair. He felt the cushions slowly suck him in, his muscles relax and his mind finally feel at ease. He hated hunting for food. It was too much strain on him, what with his already weak disposition. Denying himself the thirst for 80 years had taken much of the supernatural strength he had received when he had been turned so long ago. The crimson orbs wandered to a photo hanging above his flameless fireplace and he sighed. 1910. Had it really been that long since the accident? Kai chuckled darkly and spoke to the photo, \"If you were here right now Tala, I\'m sure you\'d be chastising me for thinking of the past. You were always chastising me, clucking like a mother hen...\"
The photo just stared back, unmoving. Tears welled up in Kai\'s eyes and he curled into a ball. All he had were his memories. All his memories haunted him.

\"Bout fucking time! When did that lazy Italian wake up, anyway?\" Max picked his head up from his desk, the imprint of various pieces of paper left on the light skin of his left cheek. His partner grinned and tossed a datapad at the sleepy blond.
\"He woke up three hours ago. You were asleep, so I went and took the statement myself. We\'ve got a full name now.\" Takao sat down at his desk and called up the Nightwalker Database Mainframe, lovingly called \'The Bloodsucker Library\' by the other officers in the department. Cracking his fingers in one graceful movement he set to work looking for the vampire. \"His name is Kai Hiwatari. That should be more than enough to nail this SOB.\"
Max reached for the coffee and poured himself a cup of bottom-of-the-pot, grimacing as the first sip hit his mouth. \"Jesus, this coffee tastes like my underarm! Not that I know what it tastes like...\" He heard Takao chuckle behind him and smiled, knowing that his friend was in a better mood than earlier. \"So, anything come up yet?\"
Takao nodded and motioned for Max to pull up a chair. \"Yup. Hiwatari, Kai. Age at turning...16. Blood type, hair color, height...yadayadayada...and that\'s it. Nothing about any of his traits, typical haunts...nada!\" He paused and read the blinking red word at the bottom of the page. \"...and he\'s deceased. Guess that explains the lack of info...\"
\"You\'re kidding, right?\"
\"Nope. Deceased as of February 27, 1910. Died in a fire along with his supposed life partner, Yuri Ivanov...also known as Tala Valkov.\" The bluenette groaned and facepalmed. \"Shit. Back to square one.\"
\"I don\'t know about that. First off, why does this Yuri character have two different full names?\" Max reached over and tapped a few keys on the computer, Yuri\'s profile appearing on the screen. He scanned the page until he found a useful tidbit, a small smirk on his lips. \"He cut ties. He also used the two names interchangeably since his family was wealthy in Russia. And the name Tala Valkov was the one that appeared on his passport. Very interesting indeed...\"
\"Do you think that Kai has access to the Ivanov Fortune? Perhaps leeching off of it?\" Takao was suddenly alert again, his eyes darkening which meant he was thinking at intense speed. \"If so, then he might be using the name Tala Valkov to rent an apartment! Maybe even purchased a house!\"
Max grinned and clapped Takao on the shoulder. \"I\'ll start looking into any transactions under both names. Why don\'t you check up on real estate?\"
Takao winked and practically floated out of their office towards the data center. \"I\'ll have something in two shakes of a rattlesnake tail!\"
Max chuckled and turned to his computer, \"Draciel, access international monetary transactions database. Search for the following two names...\"

“Kenny!”
“Holy shit!” A short young man with brown hair jumped in surprise, his coffee cup falling to the floor and clanking onto its side, the dark liquid spilling all over the marble floor. “Damnit Takao, how many times have I told you NOT TO SNEAK UP ON ME?!”
“Sorry Chief! I keep forgetting you’re skittish. Let me help you clean that up.” The bluenette smiled apologetically and started wiping up the mess with some napkins. “And...while I’m doing this, can you do a real estate search?”
Kenny flopped into his giant chair and glowered at Takao through his glasses. “A real estate search? What, are you investing in a house now? Didn’t think you could afford one on your salary.”
Takao stuck out his tongue and tossed the empty coffee cup at his friend. “Just because you make a million yen a month doesn’t mean you need to rub it in, ok? I’m not looking for a house. I want you to look up transaction records for apartments, townhouses, houses, mansions and so on. We’re looking for these three names: Tala Valkov, Yuri Ivanov and Kai Hiwatari. If you find one let me know.”
“Sure, sure. Give me about three minutes. In the meantime, make yourself useful and change out your pistol with that other one on the table.” Kenny turned to his massive computer screen and began to work in tandem with his AI, Dizzy. “And before you ask what it is I’ll just tell you. It’s a pistol equipped with irradiated silver nitrate rounds. One shot nukes a vamp.”
“Wow. When did you find the time to design this puppy?” Takao set his old weapon down and picked up the silver-plated handgun, examining the grooves and inscriptions on its surface. “It’s...fancy!”
“Of course it is, dipshit. You don’t think I sit around here all day and do nothing, do you? There IS a reason I get paid a crapload of yen, after all.” The bespectacled young man tapped his keyboard a few more times then turned to the detective, his hand pointing to a large monitor on the wall. “There you go. And you’re welcome.”

Takao burst into his office, excitement radiating off of his body. “Max! You’re not going to believe this...!”
Max turned to his partner and the two of them said at the same time, “Tala Valkov!”
The blonde smirked and grabbed his coat. “I think it’s time we pay our vampire friend a visit, wouldn’t you agree?”
“Oh yes. Most certainly.”

A twenty minute drive and two small explosive rounds later the two detectives entered a scantily decorated apartment in downtown Tokyo. It was 8 PM, the sun already down. Their prey wasn’t there.
“Shit.” Max grumbled as he slipped on a pair of latex gloves and started to look around. “Of course we figure it out when he’s gone.”
Takao shrugged and wandered over to the kitchen, slipping his latex gloves on as he walked. He opened the refrigerator and raised an eyebrow. “Synthetic blood? And vodka? Interesting eating habits our friend has...” He closed the door and turned around, his eyes wandering to the kitchen table. There on the table was a piece of paper with five things written on it, two of them crossed out. The bluenette walked over and picked the piece of paper up, his eyes going wide as he took in the words. “Max! MAX! Get in here!”
The blonde ran into the kitchen and over to his partner, panic on his face. “What?!? What is it?!” His eyes darted to the paper as well and saw the elegant scrawl. He raised an eyebrow and spoke the third line out loud. “Richter Scale. That’s a bar a block away from here...”
“And that’s where he’s going to make his third hit. Tonight.” Takao grinned. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”
Max nodded, a grin sneaking onto his face as well. “Oh hell yes. It’s sting time.”
