Chapter 2
(To recap)
The next morning Rei awoke feeling slightly stiff from the position he’d been sleeping in, but it didn’t matter after he looked down at the small being still held protectively in his arms and was quite surprised to see a four year old boy in place where an infant had been. “What in the name of Chinese dumplings?!” He cried in shock at the sight.
Said ‘baby’ opened his eyes and looked at Rei, yawning slightly. “Hello!” He said brightly after awakening properly.
Takao, being next door and all, heard the cry and ran in. “Rei! I heard you scream are you ok...ay? What the, wasn’t he a baby yesterday?”
Rei nodded. “Yeah, he was and obviously he’s not now.” He looked down at the little tyke in confusion. “Can you tell me where you’re from and what your name is?” He asked softly.
The tyke nodded. “I’m Takao!” He said smiling brightly, he seemed to remember something, stood on the bed and then bowed lightly, “Forgive me, my name is Emperor Takao Kinomiya, and I hail from Japan.” He then stood up properly and smiled brightly then said, “But you may call me Taka!”
Takao blinked trying to comprehend what he had just heard. “Emperor?”
“Yep!” Taka said happily.
“Of what year?” Rei asked softly, knowing that although Japan still had emperors and such they did not have as much power and freedom as in the feudal days of old. “And how is it that you just grew four years in one night?”
Taka blinked and looked between the two of them as if some how they could answer those questions. “Um...The 16th moon from the tiger’s crescent...I think...” He said shuffling his feet and trying to think, “And I don’t know?”
Takao sighed, “Well that didn’t get us anywhere.”
Rei nodded absently. “Well there isn’t any sense on dwelling on the subject further. Why don’t we head to the kitchen, and I’ll make some pancakes for breakfast, that way you’ll be all fed up by the time your brother’s ready to train you.” Said Rei offering Takao a Cheshire type grin. “Come on Taka, I’ll show you the bathroom so you can get cleaned up.”
“Hey I just noticed something.” Takao said before they left, “That kid, Taka, he’s wearing the cloths you carried him in when you brought him home last night...”
Startled Rei took a moment to study Taka. “Wow, you’re right. I didn’t notice that before, how is it that his clothes grew with him?” He looked at Taka for an answer but had a feeling the young child wouldn’t no either so he left it be.
He led the boy to the bathroom and showed him all the stuff he’d need before leaving and heading into the kitchen to make breakfast for everyone. He smiled at Takao’s father and grandfather who were already up and dressed. “Good morning.” He said pleasantly as he got out the ingredients for breakfast.
Taka looked up at the two elderly men in awe. “You, you’re so old!!” He shouted.
Grandpa Kinomiya and Mr. Kinomiya both looked down at him. “My good lord!” The former shouted. “When did we get a new Takao?”
“Oh that ‘s right, you were out.” Takao said. “Just yesterday, Rei went out and found him, and wouldn’t you know it, he has my name too!”
“That is mighty strange little dude.” Grandpa said.
“Tell me about it.” Takao said watching as the child poked random objects with fascination. “You’d think he’d never seen a toaster before.”
Rei rolled his eyes at Takao. “You forget Takao before I left my village I’d never seen a toaster before. Maybe Taka is from some remote village in an uncharted area of Japan?” Asked Rei as he began making the pancake batter. “Do you guys want plain pancakes or should I put something in them?” Rei asked as he continued mixing ingredients.
“Plain for me.” Hitoshi said coming in from the back of the dojo, and most obviously the outside since he was sweating slightly and his skin was flushed from working out. “And no chocolate chips for him.” He added thumbing over to Takao. “He doesn’t need anymore fat on his bones.”
Takao huffed indignant at his brother’s comment, “I am not fat!”
“Fat! Fat!!” Taka chanted.
“You little brat!” Takao said growling.
“Heh, heh!” Taka giggled madly and ran behind Rei, peeking through his legs.
“No fair!” Takao pouted. “Hiding behind Rei...”
Rei laughed shaking his head. “Leave him be Takao he’s just a child.” Long and slender lightly tanned fingers gripped a wooden spoon as he mixed the pancake batter, preparing it for cooking. “I’m sure you were just as bad at his age.”
“Worse.” Hitoshi offered grabbing an apple from the table. “He never ceased to cause trouble and he got into anything and everything.” A smile flashed across Hitoshi’s features. “He only got away with it cause he was a cute kid though.”
Takao pouted, “I wasn’t that bad...”
His grandfather gave a hearty laugh and even Mr. Kinomiya chuckled.
Taka looked at the pancake mix and stuck his finger in quickly taking it out and popping it into his mouth. “It’s good...” He said looking up at Rei with large storm blue eyes.
“Oh course it’s good, Rei’s making it after all.” Takao said smiling proudly.
Taka looked between the two of them then wandered over to Hitoshi, looking up at him. “Otouto?” He asked, finally popping his finger out his mouth. “You, you’re so big!!”
Hitoshi blinked a few times. “Sorry kiddo, I’m not your brother. See that’s my otouto over there.” He pointed to Takao, who was attempting to do the same thing Taka had, by snatching some of the pancake batter only to have Rei thwart him by smacking his hand with a spatula, Rei had recently started cooking the pancakes and needed the spatula to flip them. “So you can’t be my brother.”
Takao blinked and looked back at Takao. “He looks like me...” He said softly then added in ancient Japanese, “When I was younger...”
“What was that Taka?” Asked Rei as he set some of the finished pancakes on the table. “I didn’t quite hear what you said.” He picked the little boy up and set him in a chair, setting a plate with pancakes in front on him. “Eat up, and Takao yours will be done in a minute.” He added looking over at his friend, knowing he’d be slightly aggravated that everyone else beside him had been served.
Takao just huffed and sat, crossing his arms over his chest.
Taka looked up at Takao, stuffing his face he spoke, “You’re a warrior then? You look like a fighter, though your brother seems a bit stronger than you.” the sound however came out muffled.
Takao raised an eyebrow at him. “Don’t speak with food in your mouth. It’s rude and gross.”
Taka smirked and stuck out his tongue.
“Oh eww!” Takao shouted.
Taka laughed then started choking as he inhaled pancake.
“That what you get brat!” Takao said glaring, however when Taka continued choking he got worried. “Um Taka?”
Taka looked up at him with frightened eyes. “C-Can’t bre...” He tried to speak but only to go into further coughing fits.
“Shit.” Hitoshi who was closest and had nothing in his hands ran over and grabbed the kid, beginning to go through the steps to help chocking children. He pressed on the kid’s chest a few times trying to get him to cough up or swallow the food. Everyone hovered around him anxiously as he did this.
Takao jolted from looking at the kid when he heard thunder. “Another storm? What the hell?”
Taka’s face was turning blue as he tried to get the thing lodged out of his throat.
A huge crash was heard as lightning hit the house. Both Grandpa and Mr. Kinomiya jumped to their feet. “What the hell?!” the second shouted.
Just then everything went quiet as Taka finally threw up the Pancakes and cried lightly. “Itai...”
Hitoshi backed away slightly rubbing his back, only to move out of the way when Rei rushed over to Taka and pulled him into his arms. “It’s okay Taka.” He murmured soothingly. “You’re okay now.”
“I’m gonna go check the outside to see if the lightning did any damage to the house.” Hitoshi said standing and going to check the outside of the dojo. “What and odd few days.” He said to himself as he walked off.
Taka cried in Rei’s. “It hurt! I thought I was gonna die!”
Takao shook his head, “Well you’re okay now.”
-
Outside the damage to the roof was extensive; the dojo area had even caught on fire. However that wasn’t the strangest part. The sky was clear, not a cloud in sight!
Hitoshi frowned but didn’t allow himself time to dwell on the cloudless sky when there was a fire going. He ran over and grabbed the hose; yes they did have running water at the dojo, and proceeded to put the small fire out. When it was out he allowed himself the chance to study the sky. “What the hell is going on here?”
-
Meanwhile high above, just out of sight there was someone watching them, “Heh heh. Found you now, you son of a bitch. There’s no way you’ll escape me.”
-
Inside, Grandpa, Mr. Kinomiya and Takao had already left to help Hitoshi with the fire; Taka trembled and held fast to Rei. Looking up at him he asked, “Rei will you protect me.”
“Oh course little one. I always protect those whom I consider my friends with my life.” Rei said stroking Taka’s storm blue locks comfortingly. “It is what it means to be a Kon and a neko-jin, we are all fiercely loyal.”
The two were sitting were Taka had fallen, with Taka sitting in Rei’s lap and the neko-jin curled up around the child protectively his raven locks, which he hadn’t done up this morning, creating a black curtain and a pool around them.
Taka smiled, “You’re so nice...and soft.” He looked up at Rei, “You remind me of mama...and home.” He said sighing softly.
-
Takao sighed in relief as he and his father got the last of the fire out. “That was close, how the hell did this fire start?”
Grandpa heaved a heavy sigh, “I’m gonna have to fix the roof again...”
“Dad no, you hurt your back last time.” Mr. Kinomiya said.
“Well it’s not like you or the boys can, what with the up coming tournament and all.” Grandpa said shaking his head.
“Gramps don’t kill yourself.” Takao said sighing.
Hitoshi shook his head. “I will do it grandfather, I can still shout orders at Takao from the roof.” He threw Takao a grin. “And this way he’ll no to listen because I’ll have leverage on him . . .well more than normal.”
Takao pouted at him, “You are one mean S.O.B.”
“Takao, watch your tongue!” Takao’s grandfather and dad yelled at him.
“If he did that he’d never be able to eat again.” A voice chimed out.
“Max! Just in time for practice.” Takao said laughing.
“I’m surprised your brother hasn’t already sent you into practice. I hope you’re not rubbing off on him.” Kai said glancing at Takao and Hitoshi.
Hitoshi laughed. “No just an early morning fire that needed to be taken care of.” He brushed his hands on his pants. “I’ll leave you in charge of training today Kai, I need to fix a roof.”
Kai huffed. “Well at least some work will get done today.” He looked over the teammates gather. “Let’s get yo work, I don’t want any slacking off.”
Takao sighed heavily, and then he perked up “Ah! Rei won’t be joining us.”
“Eh? Why?” Max asked.
“Yes, why not?” Kai asked annoyed, he wanted the whole team to train together so that all their weaknesses could be worked on.
Kyouju pushed his glasses up his nose. “I’m sure there’s a good reason Kai, unlike Max and Takao, Rei’s never tried to get out of a practice.”
Takao glared at Kyouju, “You’re suppose to be on our side.” He looked at Kai and started to explain when he was abruptly cut off by a high pitch squeal.
-
“Look Rei! It’s sunshine! Oh your home is soooo bright!” Taka shouted loudly and ran to where the others were. “Hello!” He said brightly, not noticing Kai.
Kyouju blinked in surprise at the boy that had just run out of the dojo. “I didn’t know you had a little brother Takao?” Watching as Rei came out immediately after, his hair still hanging loose.
“Be careful Taka.” Rei called coming to stand by the rest of the Blade Breakers. “Hey guys.”
“I don’t” Takao said seriously, but not in any sort of anger or irritation.
“But then how?” Max asked wide-eyed.
“Rei found him yesterday, however...” Takao said staring at said child in question, “...he was a baby.”
“How is that possible?” Kai asked from where he was standing a little ways from the group. “It defies all laws of physics.”
Taka’s eyes snapped to Kai and suddenly started shaking. “Iie...s-stay away!”
“Looks like he’s afraid of you Kai.” Max comment.
“Smart kid.” Takao said.
Kai scowled and watched as Rei bent down next to Taka attempting to comfort him. “It’s okay Taka, Kai’s our friend, and I know he looks scary but he won’t hurt you.”
“I’m not staying to watch this,” Muttered Kai. “I’ve got training to do. So do you two.” He said glaring at Max and Takao.
Takao mock saluted, saying, “Da comrade!” and walked towards the dish with Max.
Taka hid in Rei’s hair peeking out at Kai, “Are you sure he won’t eat me?” He asked softly.
Rei laughed, a soft musical sound. “No Kai won’t eat you, he’s really a nice guy when you get under all the training and cold attitude.” He watched Kai ordering Max and Takao around. “At least if he likes you. But I can definitely say he won’t eat you.” Rei confirmed picking Taka up and moving closer to the beydish so that they could watch the match between Max and Takao.
Taka stared in awe, “It looks.... fun!” He shouted cheerfully, looking at Rei he asked, “Can I try?”
Laughing Rei nodded. “Alright, why don’t you go ask Kyouju, he’s the one sitting over there, if you can borrow a spare blade.” He said as he set the four-year-old down.
Taka wandered over to Kyouju. “Hello...” He said shyly.
Kyouju smiled at him kindly. “Hello, can I help you with something?” He asked as he continued to type on his laptop, with only muttered protests from Dizzy.
Taka smiled and asked politely, “Um...may I play with a beyblade?” He looked down again, staring at his very old looking oriental shoes.
“Sure, give me a minute and I’ll set one up for you, there won’t be a bitbeast in it, not like what Takao and Max have.” Kyouju gestured to the beydish were Takao and Max was just summoning Draciel and Dragoon. “Those I don’t have a supply of, not that you can buy them or anything.” He murmured to himself as he began to piece together an adequate blade for Taka. “There you go all done. Now just wait until those two finish and you can probably battle one of them.”
“Keep your defence up Max, a real opponent wouldn’t have hesitated to attack with such an opening. And Takao! Keep your mind focused, don’t let it wander, you should have seen that!” Kai said angrily from the sidelines. “You seem to be getting worse and not better.”
Takao panted and called on Dragoon, who attacked Max full on and managed to get him on edge.
“Now Draciel!” Max shouted, and made a final move that knocked Takao out.
Takao sighed, “Damn it, how the hell did I miss that?”
Max whooped and did a little victory dance, which Taka joined in because it looked fun.
Kai scowled deeply. “How many times have I told you to try and anticipate your opponents moves? You can’t show any weakness!”
“Kai relax, we’ve still got over a week until the next tournament, you don’t have to be too hard on them, and we have been practicing all week.” Rei said coming up to stand beside the slate haired team captain. “We’ll be ready, we always are.”
“Still, stupid mistakes will cause more harm than good.” Kai said sulkily knowing Rei was right.
Rei laughed clapping Kai on the back, knowing he’d won. “We learn from our mistakes though, and it wasn’t even that big of a mistake, Takao may have missed it but it means that Max learned a new move. Look on the bright side for once!”
Taka looked at Kai, “Will I fight you?” He asked blinking curiously.
Takao laughed, “No way mean old Kai would fight you, all of us are pretty much beneath him.”
Max smiled, “I will little guy, unless Rei wants to.”
“I’ll fight you Taka, I haven’t bladed at all today and I need to give Drigger a run or two.” Rei said kindly, pulling Drigger out and readying him. “Just watch what I’m doing and copy it in order to launch the blade okay?”
“Okay Rei-san!!” Taka cheered happily, watching intently he saw how Rei launched it and then almost perfectly mimicked him. “Um, go blade!” He shouted excitedly.
Rei smiled and looked down into the dish. “Go Drigger! Give him a run around.” He called to the White Tiger bitbeast, which obeyed his command and began to spin around Taka’s blade.
Remembering Max’s move before hand and used it against Rei. “Go Blade!” He said looking intently on the beyblade, willing it to do his will. The wind around the area began to pick up slightly.
Everyone watched the battle intently, something seemingly calling them to do so; even Hitoshi paused in his work to watch as the wind began to pick up. The only two who didn’t appear to notice were the two combatants.
“That’s a good try Taka but Drigger isn’t a defensive blade or an aggressive one, he’s best known for his agility.” Rei said a smirk crossing his face showing his fangs. He stood straighter as his hair whipped around him and called out his attack. “Go Drigger! Tiger Claw Attack!” At his masters command the white blade charged at Taka’s blue one and knocked it around a couple of times before sending it out of the dish.
“Wha! I lost!” Taka pouted in the typical childish form. “Oh well, it’s not like I really expected to win, not against Rei-san!!”
Takao blinked and chuckled, “You gave Rei a pretty good run for his money though, not bad kiddo, you could be great!”
“Really, really?” Taka asked excitedly. “I could?”
Takao and Max laughed, “Sure kiddo!” the later said warmly.
“He’d never get anywhere with you as a teacher Takao.” Kai said from the where he’d taken a seat prior to the match. “All he’d get would be lazy and fat.”
“Why does everyone keep calling me that!?” Takao said, obviously upset.
Taka looked at Takao, “He doesn’t look fat to me.” He said looking at Rei to fill him in.
Rei smiled at the little boy and picked him up. “Kai’s just joking, Takao really isn’t lazy or fat; although he does complain and eat a lot.”
Kai scoffed. “Who’s joking? I was only saying the truth as it is.”
Takao seethed, “Why don’t you step up to the beydish and say that? Oh wait, I don’t have to prove my self that way, I’ve already given you several humiliating defeats?”
“Yay! Another battle!” Taka cheered.
Max laughed too.
“You’ve beaten me what? Twice and I have beat you just as many times.” Kai said unconcerned as he stood and walked over to the dish. “This time it will be no different.”
“This isn’t going to be pretty.” Kyouju muttered, setting up Dizzy so that she could read the stats as they battle took place.
The two combatants stood at ready then, “3…2…1…Let it Rip!” Dranzer and Dragoon were launched into the dish and began to fly at each other at breaking speeds, this was a battle that had been fought many times and both blades could sense their Masters’ needs to be the victor of this battle.
“Dragoon! Move, dodge his in coming attack!” Takao yelled, and the winds begun to pick up again.
“...!” Taka’s eyes grew wide as he watched them fight, a fire was burning from one and the other had a storm brewing about him. “In this world too? I thought we looked similar but...” Takao said to himself in ancient Japanese. “That means...! Oh no!!” Switching to Japanese Taka moved from Rei to the beydish and launched his Beyblade in-between the two bladers, effectively ending the match and totalling his beyblade.
“What the hell?!” Takao yelled, his beyblade flying past his head and into the far wall, which happened to have a ladder on in which Hitoshi was climbing down. “Hitoshi!! Look out!!” Takao shouted to late as the beyblade cracked the latter in half sending Hitoshi careening through the air. “Nooo!”

“Nooo!”
