Chapter 1
5
years later;
Takao
cringed as he saw the photo's of two girls barely older then himself.
"Kari and Siena have been
captivated and murdered by the Guards of Emperor Voltaire, their bodies were found near the river this morning,
mangled and bruised. It's almost certain the girls were abused and misused before
they were murdered. Rumor has it that Siena wasn't a Forbidden. Autopsy showed
that she didn't have a mark in her neck. She was with her friend Kari and
people suspect that they killed her for the fun of it."
Takao
felt dizzy, ever since he had found out about his destiny at age ten, he had
been following the news. The hunt for The Forbidden had become worse by the
year, and now it was as bad as people betraying their friends and neighbors
just out of the blue just to keep save themselves.
"Why
do you keep watching that, it doesn’t make anything better", Max said. The
blond haired boy sat next to his friend, his ice blue eyes were searching for
the remote.
Takao
sighed inwardly; Max couldn’t possibly know how important this was for him. Max
didn't know he was a Forbidden, his gramps and Hitoshi had warned him not to
tell anyone for his own safety, but surely Max could be trusted right? Wrong
his gramps had said, he'd said no one could be trusted in times like these and
that it would only get worse so long as Voltaire had the strings of power in
his hands.
The 15
year old sighed softly, "It’s so useless, all these murders, all those innocent
lives that have been taken just like that"
Max
looked at him for a moment, "Yeah it's a shame", he merely said.
Something
in Max voice didn’t convince Takao the least about that statement.
"Are
you saying its the right thing to do?"
"What
made you think that?"
"Your
tone of voice", Takao said softly, he didn’t think he could bear it if Max
was indeed agreeing with Lord Voltaire.
Max
sighed, "Look I’m not saying its a good thing to kill people, but face it,
The Forbidden are not exactly normal, they creep me out with those strange
marks in their necks and they are freaks"
Takao
felt a pang in his chest, so that's how Max, his best friend really thought
about his kind. Takao didn’t really see himself as a total different kind of
human but nonetheless Max' statement had cut deep and hurt him.
"Why
are they freaks? just because they are different from you? Or because they wear
a mark as their burden or what?", Takao said defensive.
"Oh
come on its not normal for guys to like guys and girls to like girls in the
first place, that’s what my father taught me
and well I’m sure they nice and all but I don’t want to get involved
with them in anyway. The just freak me out okay? I'm normal and I like to be
with normal people. The Forbidden are strangers Takao and to be totally honest I
wouldn’t hesitate to report one to the guards of Voltaire when I see one after
all they reward you with some good money and our shop could use it, but I am
not agreeing with the killings, I just think they should live somewhere away
from us that’s all"
"So
just for the money you would report an innocent human being? So to be tortured
and murdered?", Takao said feeling his inside squirm with disgust at his
supposed to be best friend.
"Like
I said I would report them yes but I do not agree with the killing, I hate to
see innocent lives to e destroyed but if I have to think rationally then it
would be better for me and my dad, we could use the money."
"So
your father wouldn’t mind to run his shop on money you gained from an innocent
life?"., Takao felt his cheeks burn with heat.
"I
guess not...............................why are you getting so worked up over
6this Takao? I'm entitled to have my own opinion"
Takao
knew that the following thing he did was a bad idea but he was so mad at Max
that for a split second he didn’t care if max would be disgusted by him or even
report him. This was his so called best friend........................he wanted
to find out what that friendship meant to Max.
"Tell
me something Max....................................w....would you report your
best friend if he were............a F....Forbidden?"
"What
are you talking about? ", Max started but then he stopped and watched in
horror as Takao pulled the border of his turtle neck sweater down and brushed
away a powdery substance from his skin. There clearly visible was the mark, a
cross encircled by a ring of flames. The mark of a forbidden.
Max
froze, feeling the blood in his veins turn cold, "T...Takao? .......you
just drew that didn’t you, please tell me you did" , and even when he said
that he knew that the mark was real, carved into his friends tanned skin.
Takao
redid the collar of his shirt and looked at Max sadly, "Now you know why I
get so upset about all of this tuff", he whispered brokenly.
Max broke
out of his frozen state and stood up standing away from Takao, Takao looked at
him sadly and knowingly, he was sure he lost his best friend right in that
moment.
"Sorry",
he merely said before standing up not facing Max, "Hate me all you want, I
can't help being born with this burden. Would you stoop as low to report your
best friend Max? You didn’t answer me yet"
"I...I..........N..No
I don't think I could..........", Max stammered then he turned around and
ran away.
Takao let
out a breath he didn’t know he held as a tear slipped from his eyes. A small
smile tugged at his lips , Max' last words had consoled him somehow., knowing
max wouldn’t be able to report him.
"So
maybe our friendship is strong enough to hold stand in this chaos after all"
*****
Max ran
home and straight up to his room not even greeting his father and the small brown
haired teen that stood beside him. He was blinded by tears, how could things
have turned so badly?? How could Takao be a freak? And why hadn't he told him sooner,
though that last question was kind of obvious he kept pondering about it.
"Hey
Max! What's the rush?", the brown haired teen said entering the blonde’s
bedroom. The tears on his friend’s cheeks worried him.
"What’s
wrong with you?", he sat down next to his friend.
"Oh Kyouyu
its so horrible!", Max stammered.
"What
is?"
"Takao!"
Kyouyu
gave him a weird look.
"Something
happened to Takao?"
Max grabbed
Kyouyu's hands and shook his head softly.
"Takao....he's........................he's
a..............a Forbidden"
Kyouyu's
eyes widened, "What you're kidding right? That’s one sick joke Max! I have
never seen a mark on his neck or anything"
"I
wish it was a joke but think back Kyouyu, Takao has only been wearing
turtleneck shirts since he was ten, and remember when he was thirteen and we mock strangled him? Remember the
powder on your fingers and the shocked look?, we joked how he wanted to hide a
hickey from us and he told us that was the case but he never showed it
actually?"
Now that Kyouyu
thought back Max did have a point.
"Whoa
okay hum..............what did you do when he told you, he did told you didn’t
he?"
"We
were having a discussion about it and
well I told him I wouldn’t hesitate to report a Forbidden, and then he suddenly
asked if I would report my best friend
and he showed me"
"You................you
wouldn't report him would you?", Kyouyu said shaken. Both boys didn’t notice
as Mr. Mizuhara eavesdropped on their conversation, a frown growing more
evident on his face as he listened on.
"Of
course not!!, I don’t betray my friends! Would you?"
"No!",
Kyouyu said.
"I
just ran away.................he must be feeling terrible", Max whispered.
They both discussed about Takao a little longer. Mr. Mizuhara couldn’t hear it
anymore, He had known Takao since he was little, he had been Max' best friend since they were really small, but
he couldn’t let Takao pollute his son's thoughts with freak thoughts like all
those Forbidden had. He had to take action.
"Forgive
me son", he whispered as he walked down the stairs, Max heard his steps
and flushed, had his father heard all of that?
"Kyouyu
my father was listening to our conversation, you know how he thinks of The
Forbidden!", Max said worried!
"Not
good", Kyouyu whispered as he followed Max down the stairs. Max heard his
father dialing a number and answer some one on the other end of the phone line.
"Hello,
this is Mizuhara speaking, I’d like to report a Forbidden"
Max and Kyouyu
both froze at the bottom of the stairs, horrorstricken by what just had
happened.
Max heard
his father give a detailed description of Takao and swallowed, he was feeling
sick. His father had known Takao since he was small how could he be so cruel?
"I'm
leaving", Kyouyu said sadly before he turned around and ran away, if everything
went how it was to be then Takao's faith was sealed and he just couldn’t live
with that knowledge, he couldn’t warn him either because he lived across town
and he would never make it in time. Plus
he hadn’t brought his mobile phone with him. Voltaire’s guards seemed to be
fast as lightning when they had their eyes on a prey.
Max walked
up to his father as said person hung up with a said expression on his face.
"How
could you?!", Max said, his eyes flashing furiously
"Max!",
Mr. Mizuhara said but max turned away from him and ran.
Mr. Mizuhara
sunk to his knees, "Can't you see I only want the best for you? I'm
sorry", he whispered to no one in particular.
*****
Takao
looked up when he heard yells coming from the /dojo, he stood up quickly and
went to see what was going on. When he entered his eyes met a scene that he had
feared ever since he was ten.
His
grandfather was fighting a tall broad man in black and silver clothes, he had
the logo of Voltaire embedded on his sleeve. It was time they were coming for
him.
""Didn’t
you say you could never..........Max?", he whispered to himself as he took
his katana.
"Leave
my gramps alone!", he screamed in anger launching an attack on the
intruder, he saw more guards coming, they assaulted his brother, with a
sickening thud he saw his unprepared brother sin=k to the floor as life drained
out of him.
"Hitoshi!",
Takao felt tears slide over his cheeks and tasted blood in his mouth as a fist
connected with his jaw in that moment that his guard was down.
"You're
coming with us filthy freak!"
Takao
struggled against the broad guard's grasp with no avail, so this was it, he
would be murdered, never to exist again.
Suddenly
the grasp of the man weakened as he fell down. Takao turned around and saw his
gramps struggling to keep standing up.
"T..Takao
you must run! Run to the forests they wont find you so e.......easily there.
T.......Take this with you", his gramps handed him a blue amulet that he
had worn since Takao could remember. He took it and watched helplessly as his grandfather
was struck once again by another guard.
"E...escape"
Takao
pocketed the amulet and started to run, the guards followed him through the streets
as people watched them some with sad and knowing expressions on their faces.
Takao turned several corners.
"Takao!"
Takao
looked hastily at his left but he kept running he saw a flash of blond hair and
blue eyes before he turned another corner, his expression saddened as he remembered
what Max had said.
Max saw Takao
run for his life, in that split second their eyes made contacts he could’ve
sworn he saw a flash of pure hate in his friends eyes.
"I
swear it wasn’t me....................it wasn’t me TAKAO!!!!!!", he yelled
before crumbling down to his knees where he remained sobbing silently.
"So I
guess you've been lying to me ..................my so called best friend",
he reached the beginning of the forest and ran along the sandy and curvy roads,
he turned left on a secret passage that he only knew about, and ended up deep
in the forest where the trees blocked
the rays from the sun. He couldn't hear the footsteps anymore and so he guessed
they had lost him, breathing heavily he let his tears fall freely as he clutched
the blue amulet in his pocket. He put it around his neck and drew his knees up,
now what was he supposed to do? Stay here. With no food and water and
everything?
Takao
felt the temperature drop slightly, night was falling, he stood up and wandered
little further into the forest. He sat down on a large rock and sighed tiredly,
he might as well could try and catch some sleep, but the haunting images of his
grandfather and Hitoshi's dead kept plaguing him..
Suddenly
he was grabbed from behind roughly, strong arms kept him in place as he
struggled to get loose, the person pushed a cloth under his nose and Takao
felt like fainting immediately. Before
he lost total consciousness, his thoughts averted back to his grandfather.
"I'm
sorry I couldn't escape"
