Death and His Pilot
Chapter Two
There were whispers when Heero returned to consciousness, whispers that he couldn’t understand. They weren’t in a language the pilot had ever heard, soft and melodious.
‘Have you ever seen anything like him?’ one voice, vaguely female, asked.
‘No, never. Are you sure it’s male? It’s so delicate,’ the other said. Try as he might without opening his eyes, Heero could not decide on the gender of the second speaker. ‘We’d better report it to the headmaster. Should we move it?’
Heero’s eyes snapped open as he felt one of them try to pick him up. His eyes widened as the sight before him.
The two beings, for they obviously weren’t human, stood at least nine feet tall each, and had wings. The female’s were yellow and feathered simply while the other’s, who he still couldn’t figure out a gender for, were speckled green and gold, the feathers like that of a peacock. Both had pointed ears and slit eyes.
‘Oh, he’s awake,’ the female said. ‘Can you walk, little one?’
“I don’t understand,” Heero said, scooting away from the pair, but not getting far before the other latched a hand around his wrist, the grip like gundanium.
‘That’s odd,’ the other said, clearly confused. ‘It should have understood tongues, no matter what language it speaks.’
The female shrugged. ‘Maybe no one who speaks tongues has encountered his language before. It’s unlikely, but possible. Come on. It we’re taking him to the headmaster, we should go before we miss midday meal. I’m starving.’
Heero was pulled to his feet as the other laughed, stumbling to keep up with their long strides. They were clearly much stronger than he was, and he didn’t like that fact. Going through the hallways, they passed other winged creatures, and a few without. Very few seemed to be of the same species, though none were even remotely human, and most were taller than Heero by quite a bit. His captures stopped walking suddenly and Heero found himself being lifted into the other’s arms. The reason became obvious as the two spread their wings and flew straight up a long column of empty space in the center of the building. They landed finally on a balcony at the top of the column, standing before a large door. The female knocked as the other had yet to set Heero down.
‘Headmaster, we’re sorry to disturb you, but we found something in the lower hallways, and he doesn’t understand tongues,’ the female said as the door opened. ‘May we come in?’
It was a male voice that spoke inside the room in the same language as the two. ‘You may enter. Bring your find as well.’
As he was carried inside, Heero looked around the large office. There were four things that resembled desks, though two looked as though they had been deserted for some time. But what caught Heero’s eye the most was a large painting that covered a third of one wall.
There were five people in the painting, all but one having black wings. In the back stood a man, he supposed, with white hair and purely black eyes. They weren’t like Wufei’s, with dark irises; they were completely black, without even whites. His wings looked like the Christian demons,’ bat like and large. In front of him was a pretty woman, with flat gold irises and green hair. Her wings made her look like a dark angel, completely feathered. In her lap sat a girl child with pale green hair and dark gold eyes, only she had slit pupils. Her wings, unlike the others’ were white, one leathery and one feathered. To their left stood the same man who sat behind the only occupied desk in the office. His hair was streaked black and silver, and his eyes bordered between silver and blue. Like the child’s, the man’s wings were mixed, one feather, one leather, but were black. Heero gasped as his eyes fell upon the last man, who stood on the right.
It was Duo, but it wasn’t at the same time. This Duo’s pupils were slit, and his hair was longer and contained more colors. It was still in its same braid, hanging over the painting’s shoulder. His wings were the same as his opposite’s, though the sides switched. His face was slimmer, older and more exotic. He himself was thinner as well, and, if the comparison with the man in the office was accurate, much taller. Even sitting, Heero could tell that the man was taller than his captors by at least a foot.
‘It would appear that yet another person has become smitten by my younger brother’s beauty,’ the man said with a laugh, bringing Heero’s attention back to him. The man stood, confirming Heero’s suspicions as Heero himself was set on the floor and allowed to stand on his own. The man looked to be about twelve feet tall, and proportioned to his height. Seeing Heero’s nervousness despite his attempt to hide it, the man knelt down to be eye level with him. ‘It’s alright. I won’t hurt you without reason. My name is Yami.’ He pointed to himself and repeated his name. ‘Yami.’
Understanding the gesture, Heero nodded, pointing to his own chest. “Heero.”
‘Do you know what he is, headmaster?’ the female asked hopefully.
Yami shook his head. ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t have the slightest idea, not even with all of my travels. I’ll keep him here until my brother returns from his latest mission. Perhaps he has seen them once. You know that Shinigami has been to more planets than I have. You two had better head down to lunch.’
Heero’s ears perked at the familiar name. Did Yami mean Duo? He scowled as the female ruffled his hair on her way out the door. It was shut behind them, closing Heero in the room with Yami.
To his annoyance, the winged man began to examine him, occasionally poking and prodding. Whatever the man found, it seemed to leave him bewildered. ‘How did a species so fragile ever evolve? It doesn’t seem possible. So, Heero, what to do with you until my brother returns…’
It didn’t take long for Heero to figure out the number system once he was shown, and he was set to the task of calculating scores from a large stack of paper. The work was tedious, but it helped to pass the hours. He didn’t stop until Yami noticed a hastily covered yawn.
‘You must have shorter days than us,’ Yami said, tugging Heero away from the papers despite his protests. ‘Come on, you look dead on your feet. It’ll still be some time before Shinigami returns.’
Picking up the boy, Yami carried him to the back of the room and through a door. On the other side was what looked like a sitting room to Heero, but they didn’t stay there for long either, instead going through one of four additional doors. It was on a bed in the room beyond that Heero was dropped and tucked under a blanket like a child. Looking around, he reasoned that, by the contents of the room, it probably belonged to a child. The bed was much too short for a full-grown man the size of Yami.
‘Stay here,’ Yami instructed, placing a firm hand on Heero’s shoulder as he tried to sit up in the bed. ‘I’ll come and wake you when Shinigami is sighted. I’ll take you to the port to greet him with the others.’
Heero was left alone and the lights dimmed as soon as the man left. For once, escape didn’t seem to be an option. From what he had seen of the building, it was a fortress stronger than any he had seen before. All he could do for the moment was sleep.
