Chapter 2, Heero's POV
A soft sun had risen high in the sky, indicating the time of midday. A man, who had the looks of no more than a mere youngster, was walking through the small village, sheathing his blood-stained sword. He ran a hand through his messy brown hair, his blue eyes sharp and piercing.
“Heero! We were wondering what took you!” An even younger man dressed in a long tunic with light colors ran towards him.
“The animals seemed to have better ideas than to be eaten, brother. Took a bit to get them.” Heero responded with a bit of a twinkle in his eye. The younger man smiled, bowing slightly to the elder.
“Of course. No doubt they were scared off by your stern looks.” he mused. A slight frown appeared on Heero's face, before he shook his head.
“Incorrigable as always, Quatre.” He replied leading the light-haired man back towards the hut they stayed in.
Once inside, they sat down, Heero pulling off his weapons and belts in the meantime. Finished, he sat down next to his brother, sighing lightly.
“Heero? Is something wrong?”Quatre asked, slightly worried.
“Hm? Oh..no, it's nothing.” Heero said quickly, shrugging the light feeling off.
As their conversation continued and the day progressed, the feeling had been increasing steadily. A fact that Heero chose to ignore, but a fact that Quatre was continually getting annoyed with.
Finally as twilight started to appear, Heero couldn't help but start pacing back and forth in the village. A fire was going, and the children were running and playing around before they finally collapsed onto the ground, laughter ringing in his ears. He sat down heavily on the ground near the fire, rubbing his forehead gingerly.
“Heero. Go. Now.” His brother's voice loomed above him.
“It's nothing!” Heero snapped back at him, his eyes darkening a couple of shades. Quatre's face remained as calm as ever, as he knelt down to Heero's eye level, staring sternly into them.
“Heero. I know for a fact that what I'm feeling is just what you're feeling, if not more so! Now stop being so stupid and go! If you want to stop the feeling, then go and find out what it is!” He finished, heaving his older brother up with both hands and shoving him away from him.
“What...” Heero started before Quatre quickly cut him off.
“Go now. Do not come back until you've figured out the feeling completely. Go.” He finished, throwing his belt and the sword to him. Heero growled slightly but complied. He bowed in apology to the others, and ran off, following the quickly growing feeling inside of his heart.
As the sun descended beyond the horizon, leaving the the sky in magnificent colors, he ran further away from the village, using his sword to slice down anything unnecessary in his path. The trees cleared and parted, showing what looked like a dojo. Heero's eyes narrowed, knowing for that the reason beyond the feeling was inside that building.
He ran towards it, and shoved the door open, not even bothering to take his shoes off, something that he never does. He stopped dead, his sword dropping to the dojo floor with a metal clang. Wordlessly, he walked slowly towards the sprawled figure on the floor, dropping to his knees.
“......Shin-kun?” he finally asked, his voice hoarse. No response came from the still figure, covered in blood.
Fearing the worst, he carefully turned him over, and checked his pulse. Nothing. Time seemed to stand still for Heero, as his trained eyes scanned over the body, noting the wound, arrow, and poison. He raised a shaky hand to brush away the hair from Shin's face, the pain in his heart growing, and the realization slowly creeping in.
'Gone....' Heero's mind reeled, not believing. He fell fully to his knees, a large, wet tear trailing itself down his face, as the realization fully settled. His eyes raked Shin's body, praying and searching for any signs of life...and found none. His hair covering his eyes in a shadow, carefully picked up Shin's still-warm body he noted, and stood.
He turned slightly and saw the haiku written in what looked like Shin's blood:
Kaze tsukumu
Hana: hasu nagasu
ue aoi
His mind registering the writing, memorized word for word within seconds. He however, did not understand the true meaning and extent of the haiku. Nor did that matter to him at the moment. He slowly walked out of the dojo, picking up his sword and sheathing it, before walking out.
If there was ever in a point his life he regretted doing, it was then. He regretted not taking his brother's advice, and going after the growing sense of wrong in his heart. It was his foolishness that had caused Shin's death, he decided, and blamed himself entirely. A foolishness he vowed never to overlook again. It already caused him to lose the person most precious in his life. The realization had made him see the truth.
It had cost him his Mate.
