Chapter 1
A/N: There's a lot of cursing. A lot a lot. Sorry.
Pale lips sucked greedily at the cancer-stick held tightly between two rough fingers. A look of pleasure flashed in onyx eyes on the inhale. The exhale brought a sigh of relief, and a curse from nearby.
"Dammit, Chang!" a woman snarled. "I'd thought you'd given up smoking!"
"I did," replied the smoker while taking a long drag. He blew the smoke out slowly and watched it curl away into the night sky. "This is just one cigarette, Sally."
"Chang," she warned, hands on her fists.
Rolling his eyes, Wufei dropped the cigarette and ground it out. "Such a waste," he thought. He gave his friend a weak glare and shrugged his shoulders.
"There. It's out. Now, what do you want?"
Sally chose to ignore his bad attitude. If she always took offense at the young man's tone, they wouldn't be friends.
"Une wants you to come back to the meeting."
"I don't know why she needs me there. Hell, I don't know why they'll even need me for the job. It's not that difficult."
"Wufei, you know you're the only one who knows this organization well enough to get them in. They need you. This was your mission to start with." Sally stopped talking, realizing what she'd just said. She looked away from the Chinese man, nervous. "Sorry."
Wufei shrugged again. "It was my mission. I don't want it now. They can handle it."
Sally hesitated, but bit the bullet and said what needed to be said. She didn't want to, though, knowing it would hurt both of them. "But what if they can't? What if something goes wrong like it did for you? Can you allow them to take the risk?"
It was Wufei's turn to look away. He wasn't one to talk about his feelings, even to someone he trusted and loved like a sister, but...he knew he had to. Sally had helped him through everything after, and she deserved his words.
"I don't want to do it," Wufei told her softly. "I don't. I don't want to go back there, to do that stuff again. I don't want them to see me like that. They don't know, Sally, and I never want them to. But if I do this, they won't just know; they'll see, see everything!"
"It'll be all right, Wufei." Sally hugged him, taking a liberty she was rarely allowed. But this time she wasn't pushed away.
"It won't."
"Then, at least make it all right for them?"

The only good thing about this mission, he thought wearily, is that I can smoke.
Wufei could feel eyes on him, even though those eyes were hidden by dark shades. "What?" he asked testily. "Never seen a guy smoke before?"
The other man, the one watching him, laughed. "Yeah, it's just, I never took ya for a smoker is all."
"Well, you don't know me too well, do you?"
Wufei knew he was being deliberately mean to his comrades, but he couldn't bring himself to care. He knew he shouldn't taken his issues out on them, but it soothed the pain and fear inside him for a little bit, so he allowed himself to snap at them and rub their noses in the fact that they had no idea who he really was. That seemed to really bother them, but he couldn't figure out why.
"Yeah, I don't, do I? None of us do, 'cept Sally, and she ain't talking much to us," came the reply.
"Wonder why?" Wufei said with a snort.
Listen, Chang! We never forgot about you or some stupid shit like that! You're the one who disappeared on us! We looked for you, and you didn't want to be found!"
Pain. So much pain. He's distinctly aware of the pain that spikes every time he takes a breath. He wishes desperately that he didn't have to breath, but since he does he takes shallow breaths and tries not to cough. When the coughing starts he only wishes he was dead.
"This really fucking sucks..."
"You're wrong, Duo. I did want to be found," Wufei said coldly before he walked away to throw up.

"This mission sucks," Duo groaned as he kicked off his shoes. "If I have to hear Fei bitch one more fucking time I'm gonna hurt him."
"I'm with you," Heero said, handing the damp young man a towel.
"He takes every single fucking opportunity to rub it in my face that I know nothing about him! He's the one who never wanted anything to do with us! It's his own fucking fault!"
"Trowa has dinner waiting for you." Heero pushed his friend toward the kitchen. "Where's Chang?"
"Hell if I know. He was right behind me." Duo stormed off to eat, muttering under his breath the whole way.
Heero waited patiently at the front door for Chang, the second towel held tightly in his hands. He and Trowa had been working all day on hacking through the layers of security protecting the gang's computer accounts, but had no luck. They'd been hoping Wufei and Duo had better luck searching the streets for a way in to the gang.
Judging by Duo's attitude, it didn't seem so. Heero sighed and locked the dead bolt and went to join the others.

Heero jolted out of uneasy sleep around 3 in the morning. He wondered for a moment what had awoken him, and then heard the soft scratching at the front door. Was someone trying to break in?
The ex-soldier could just hear muffled curses as he stalked to the front door. Heero unlocked the door and inched it open. He was startled to see his errant comrade staring worriedly at Heero's upraised gun.
"Shit!" Heero exclaimed as he grabbed for his friend.
Wufei shrunk from him. Shoulders hunched over, face hidden by a mess of sopping hair, and shaking, Wufei little resembled the proud warrior he was usually seen as. He looked more like a beaten and half-drowned puppy, and whimpered like one too as the heat seeped into his chilled body.
"What happened?!" Duo shouted as he and Trowa ran over. "You were right behind me!"
The Chinese man shook his head but didn't speak.
"C'mon, Fei, we've got to clean you up," Duo said, changing his tone to try to ease the man's apparent fear. Duo slowly grabbed for one slender wrist, and tugged hard once he's gotten a grip.
The result: one malnourished Chinese man held firmly by three pairs of strong arms. Wufei was carried to the bathroom and made to sit on the closed toilet lid. Heero and Trowa took off, to call Sally and get the med kit respectively, leaving Duo to sit on the edge of the tub and stare remorsefully at his friend.
"I should've looked for you when you didn't come back. Sorry. I didn't want to go out in the storm, but that's no excuse to leave you out there alone. Have I said I'm sorry yet?"
"Shut up," Wufei said through clenched teeth. The heat was almost unbearable. "It's not your fault."
"Yes it is," Duo protested. "You're my partner! I should've been out there looking for you!"
"Did you look for me last time?" Wufei asked. He was proud of himself that he didn't slur. Things were bad enough what with seeing two Duo's crouched in front of him, both blurry and weaving. He could barely resist the urge to tell Duo to stop moving.
"Huh?"
"When I disappeared. Did you really look for me?"
"He was half-crazy with worry," Trowa said as he entered the tiny bathroom. "Duo, go make him something warm to drink."
Duo nodded and left.
"Duo barely slept he was so busy looking for you. It was months before we finally persuaded him to give up," Trowa said as he began to examine Wufei's many cuts and bruises.
"You?" Wufei lifted his head to look at Trowa. "What?"
"Duo was the only one who believed you needed help. He refused to believe you ran away."
"D...Duo?"
"If you're going to hate anyone, hate us, but don't hate him."
Wufei nodded and regretted it. The pain in his head suddenly overwhelmed everything else and he slid sideways off the toilet lid and into blessed oblivion.
A/N: I'm really starting to worry myself. This is kinda disturbing. It's no wonder my dreams are so damn freaky.
