Summary:
Based on a fairy tale that I have twisted to examine how things are not as they
seem. Duo is a boy with a sinister curse. Heero is a knight desperate to prove
his love to a princess’ father. Their destinies are intertwined in tragedy.
It had happened again. Duo blinked his eyes open and tasted
blood on his tongue. He had lost time. It was dark out, but the last thing he
remembered was leaving the inn that he worked at when the sun was still in the
sky. Now the moon shone brightly on him and he was in a strange place. He was
covered in blood, but he knew that it was not his own. With a gasp, he lurched
away from the alley. He had to get home.
Duo had no idea what was going on. He had had black outs
since he was eleven. He was now seventeen and he could still not figure out
what was wrong with him. He would lose time and wake up in someone else’s
blood. People would disappear and turn up horribly mutilated like a wolf had
eaten them. How could he possibly be responsible for something like that? Yet,
whenever night came, he felt this indescribable hunger and then he would lose
consciousness, wake up hours later and the hunger would be gone. He couldn’t be
a monster, could he? It didn’t make any sense! Duo rubbed at the tacky blood on
his cheek. He wasn’t a murderer, he was just an orphan
boy trying to make it by on a cook’s salary. For years he had moved from town
to town, terrified by the doubt in him. Yet, in every place that he moved to,
people were disappearing. But as long as he denied it, it couldn’t be true,
right?
Duo had lost his parents to a terrible plague. Everyone in
his home town had died, all except for Duo. For some reason, Duo had never
gotten sick. Ever since that time when he was eleven, a dark shadow seemed to
be following him around. It was like he was cursed or something. Duo went down
to the river by the shack that he called home, shed his clothes, and bathed,
rubbing at his pale skin to try to get the blood off. Since his parents had
died, Duo had tried to take care of himself, but it was so hard and lonely. He
did not have any friends, he didn’t trust himself
around other people anymore so he remained a hermit outside of his work at the
inn. He desperately wanted someone, anyone. He had lived on the streets for a
very long time. It was pure luck that he had gotten a job in this village. The
cook had just died from tuberculosis and Duo had quite a bit of knowledge of
how to cook thanks to his mother. The blood on his skin was proof that, as
lonely as he was, he could not be around people for long periods of time. He
wondered if he should just move into the woods somewhere and live like a wild
animal. If he truly was the one killing people, he needed to go where no one
was around. But the need for human contact seemed to control him and he couldn’t
bear to live that way. He always hoped that he could meet someone, anyone, who
could make everything better. The blood lifted onto the cold water and he
stared at his hands. There were pieces of skin under his nails. He scrubbed at
them furiously. He really was a monster. Duo gathered up the clean clothes that
he taken from the shack and pulled them on. The water was freezing, but the
clean feeling was good. The shack was tiny, but since Duo lived all alone and
didn’t have much money, it suited him fine. Since moving to this village and
deciding to live away from people, the number of people disappearing was less
than in other places when he had lived among people. There were all sorts of
rumors about the ‘demon’ that was feeding off of people. Duo wondered if that
was what he was, but he had had human parents, so he couldn’t be something like
that. He sighed. He had work again in the morning and he would need a full
nights sleep. However, even as he laid down on his
small bed, thoughts of darkness and blood and screaming stayed with him and it
was impossible to fall asleep.
