At the Preventers HQ
"Heero, Duo," Sally addressed, "This is a very dangerous mission."
"So, tell us all the details," Duo suggested. He was very excited about this upcoming mission, but, the best part was getting to spend it with Heero. Deep inside he loved Heero, he wanted him to know his true feelings. Then again, if he did that, he might risk their friendship, and that was something that he couldn't bear to lose, of course, on the other hand, he might love him as well. It was all he hoped for but he quickly shook those thoughts out of his head, he had a mission to be thinking about, not his personal well being. There was one rule at the Preventers, Mission first, and then personal well being. That was something he was going to stick by even if it killed him.
"You'll arrive in L5 China Colony at 08:00 tomorrow morning. Then, you will meet with Ling Pao, the leader of the Chinese part of the Preventers. He will take you to the rendezvous point where you will wait for the assassin to arrive. Ling Pao has been working undercover for a long time," Sally explained.
"How much danger could possibly be involved here? It's like sending out Special Forces to deal with a shoplifter," Duo laughed. "Why would you send us?"
"Duo, I understand, but there is more to it. You both are less likely to be caught, and you both need a vacation afterward, so why not send you?" Sally assured, trying to make them think that they were the only ones suited for the task at hand.
"It's only the emperor," Heero commented.
"If it's the emperor, why isn't Wu Fei here?" Duo asked curiously.
"It's because that the emperor is Wu Fei's father-in-law, and she is a woman."
"It makes it that much worse," Sally told them. "Do you know with him there it could ignite a war? He is next in line to the throne, and lots of Chinese don't want to see him ascend the throne.
"I never thought about it like that," Duo sighed.
"Baka," Heero coughed out.
"You will leave for the L5 China Colony shortly," Sally informed. Heero and Duo stood up and saluted. "Dismissed," Sally said.
They both exited and started down the corridor to the hangar. Duo looked over at Heero as he walked down the corridor next to him, his long braid swinging back and forth. He looked into Heero's cobalt blue eyes, knowing the horrors they had seen. Since Heero had been born, he had been trained for war. He was called the Perfect Soldier, and he never showed emotions. He never even knew his real name, so he was given a name by the man who trained him for war, Professor J. Since then, Heero had been this emotionless pool of nothing since the war, and afterward he is starting to discover himself little by little. Every day he becomes more human, smiling for once, as he never did before. Still, he's dying for war, he needs it survive, it's his addiction, it's his role in life. It's all he was taught to do. Breaking his stare, Duo spoke his name softly, trying to grab his attention.
"Heero," Duo said slightly louder, "If I don't make it through this, I want you to remember me, just the way I am now." He pulled out his camera, "Take a picture of me!" He handed the camera to Heero. Heero grabbed the camera and prepared to take a picture.
"Smile," Heero said and he took the picture. Duo always had a positive outlook on life, even though he was born an orphan and raised in an orphanage. When the war broke out his home was destroyed, and the church that contained the orphanage was burned to the ground. Duo then lived on the streets. He became a soldier when he was caught aboard a Preventers spacecraft wearing a hat adorning the Sweepers logo. He then became one of them, Pilot 02. He was trained by a professor named Dr.G, just as Heero had been. That's why Heero admires him, that's why he loves him. He has the emotions and feelings he never had.
"Thank you," Duo said, smiling at him. He took the camera and put it back in his pocket.
"This mission won't be that hard, we are just taking out an assassin," Heero informed, "I don't think it would be that difficult."
"I think there is more to it than the assassination of a government official. If it wasn't more than that, why would they send us? We're some of the most highly qualified soldiers!" Duo explained.
"Duo, quit worrying. When this mission is over, we'll go and have some valuable rest and relaxation. Nothing bad is going to happen," Heero assured.
"I just have a bad feeling about this, just call it a warrior's intuition. I just wonder who this assassin is. If it's a woman, I might have a problem shooting her. I can't just shoot a woman, but I can shoot a man," Duo said, then, he laughed. "As many times as you tried to kill Relena, shooting a female assassin shouldn't bother you."
"Just because my nickname is the Perfect Soldier, doesn't mean I don't have emotions," Heero commented dryly.
"Look, we're here!" Duo said happily.
"How grand," said Heero sarcastically.
"Come on Heero, lighten up," Duo said, "We are getting to go to China! I've never been, so I want to take lots of pictures!"
"China," Heero sighed, "Is great. L5 is not China, but it is nice."
"C'mon Heero, let's think of this as a vacation and a mission," Duo suggested.
Heero started to walk over to the small plane in the hangar. He walked up to a very old man, who looked like he had been through the wear and tear of many decades of events. The old man was asleep in a chair next to his plane. Heero shook him to wake him.
Duo walked up, "Wake up old man. You have to fly us to L5."
"Mr. Yuy, Mr. Maxwell," the old man said, "Is that you?"
"Hn," Heero snorted, he didn't like this guy. He was way too old to be flying a plane.
"I need to get you both to the spaceport in London immediately."
"Well, let's get going!" Duo announced. "I am ready to go." Getting very excited about the mission, Duo takes a picture of the plane, the old man, and Heero getting on the plane. Then, Duo boards, and they take off to the spaceport in London.
During the whole plane ride, Duo talked and talked and talked. He is a real motor mouth when he gets excited about something. So, while Duo continued his endless chatter about nothing really important, Heero takes the end of his braid and shoves it into his mouth.
"Hmmpffftttt, mmmhhhhfffttttuuu," Duo griped at Heero, removing the braid from his mouth. "Do you see what you've done, now I'm going to have split ends! You should be ashamed of yourself Heero Yuy!" Now he begins to tickle him, as Heero is very susceptible to tickling. Watching Heero giggle and try to get away made him happy inside, happy to see the man he loves smiling again.
