A Valentine’s Tribute Part Two: Lotus Blossoms
Rating: R
Pairing: 1x5
Summary: Chang learns the hard way that maybe some Holidays don’t need to be
hated. (Un-beta’d)
Wufei groaned and turned over,
nestling deep into the warmth that surrounded him and sighed happily at the
constant cool breeze enclosing the room. This, whatever this was, felt so good
and right. He curled his leg a little, shifted the arm underneath the pillow…
pillow. He turned slowly on the soft cotton sheets… sheets… Pillow and sheets.
Where was he? Wasn’t he supposed to be in the office? He huffed, not wanting to
move, to figure out where he was. His body still felt a little clammy, his
throat and nose a little sore. Slowly he opened his eyes and saw nothing but
darkness. Panicking he jolted up, his arm wrenching forward and knocking into
the headboard. Pain flared in his hand as he untangled his body from the
mountain of sheets and stuck the knuckle of a bruised finger into his mouth.
The door for the bedroom opened,
shading light from the hallway into the darken room and burning his eyes. He
winced.
“You’re awake. Good”
That was Yui’s voice. Humph, then he
was safe after all. Now the covers had pooled around his waist and his body
felt cold. He must have been in Yui’s apartment. He tried to talk but it all
just came out as a jumbled garbled mess that made his throat ache something
fierce and his head spin.
“Don’t talk. I can read you.”
Yui moved forward, the bed dipped
down as a cold hand was pressed against his feverish head. Why was Yui touching
him? He wasn’t one to normally invade someone’s personal space, sickness or
not. But his eyes wavered slightly when he blinked. What’s going on in his
head?
‘How did I get here?’ Wufei mouthed,
pushing the hand away from him.
“I carried you” Yui flexed his
fingers. Probably trying to rub the germs off... Wufei tried to swallow the
snicker that wanted to escape and slowly shook his head.
‘What happened?’
Yui smirked, eyes cool and
calculating. “Simmons called to inform me that you fainted when you received
your Cupids Gift.”
Wufei frowned. ‘What Gift?’ He
shivered pulling some of the sheets back up over his chest, and watched as
Heeros' smirk only grew.
‘Impromptu meeting with Une, I had
to send your gift with Simmons. Who then called to inform me that you fainted
upon seeing it...
Wufei’s frown deepened. ‘Why would
you get me a gift Yui?”
Yui’s smirk only grew bigger. “I was
your cupid, Chang”
Wufei huffed, slowly using the
un-bruised hand to rub at his temples where a headache was slowly forming.
‘You’ve been spending way too much time around Maxwell. And I did not faint
because of some damn blossoms. I took the wrong medication.’
“No you didn’t.” Yui got off the bed
and walked out of the room only to come back in moments later with the pillow
bottle in his outstretched hand. Wufei snatched it from him, noticing the same
little yellow sticky note and the little white pillows inside.
‘These aren’t the pills Sally gave
me. They are little blue and white capsules Yui.’ He could feel his frustration
growing.
“According to Po she gave you two
sets of pills Chang. The capsules are a pain killer. These are the antibiotics.
You switched them.”
Wufei eyes widen slightly as his
understanding grew. No wonder he hadn’t felt so horrible the night before. Like
a weakling he had caved and took the painkillers, thinking that it was the
medication all along...…
“I’ve retrieved the painkillers from
your apartment as well as some of your clothing. As soon as you get some
suitable rest we will work on the Fulton recon.”
He slowly nodded, wrapping the
sheets around him and slowly laying back down. He could trust Yui to wake him
when it was time. Just like he trusted Yui to always be there for him. Just
like he trusted Yui with his life. Theirs was an understanding that was purer
and stronger than any other bond he knew. Fingers, not his own, pulled off the
band holding back his hair, untangled some of the strands that usually got
caught…Yui seemed very touchy all of a sudden, but sleep was already pulling at
him. A gentle pressure was placed next to his ear, warm breath sending shivers
down his spine.
“Sleep well.” Footsteps drifted off.
The door slid close silently. Darkness surround him, comforted him for once.
Sleep called at him. Yui would protect him.
Yui rested his head against the
closed door, breathing in deep to stop his racing heart. He’d almost let his
mask slip. He’d almost given into the urge. Stupid; eyes closed and fingers
curled against his throat, feeling his own fluttering pulse. Every day it was
getting worse. Every day the urge was getting stronger.
Maybe Chang was right.
He smirked pushing away from his
bedroom door and heading towards the kitchen. Maybe he was spending too much
time listening to Maxwell drone on and on about the perfect romances, finding
the other half of your soul, finally feeling complete and whole and
cherished... Fingers clenched as he tried to swallow down the pain these
thoughts always brought him. Who was he to want those things, with all the
blood on his hands? And better yet, to have Wufei feel the same way; to want to
spend every waking moment with him, loving him…
Maybe it was impossible.
Walking to the table he began to
clean up. First, the plates with the grilled chicken and steamed vegetables
covered and placed in the warm oven. Then the utensils, stacked back into the
rack, cleaned, untouched, sparkling in the dim glow of the light coming from
the living room. And finally the centerpiece, the crystalline bowl filled with
floating blossoms and tea lights. Yui’s eyes closed, teeth gnawing the inside
of his cheek. Stupid. Tonight was supposed to be the night.
He shook his head, moved to take the
biggest lotus blossom from out of the bowl and plucked the platinum and white
gold ring from its’ depths. Crushed petals fell unheeded to the floor, crunched
underneath his bare foot as he threw the other blossoms and unlit candles away.
The bowl was washed, placed neatly in the dish rack. The heavy white tablecloth
was pulled off, folded and tucked away in the hallway closet.
Yui paused, fingers curling around
the knob of the door. Eyes sliding close as he fought against the urges to
move. To stray back to his bedroom door. To sneak inside and run his fingers
through perfect black silk. To kiss smooth caramel skin. To breathe in him and
pray that for once in his life, he was truly worthy of someone so precious and
intelligent.
Fingers raked through his hair. His
feet carried him over to the couch. He sat down as if the entire universe was
bearing down on him once more. Behind closed eyelids he saw nothing but raining
fire, burning skies… all he heard was the roaring of his own fears, the pain
inside Wufei’s voice. He had promised himself then and there, he would find a
way to take that pain away forever.
Two years later and he was so close
to his goal he could taste it.
Persian blue eyes opened, tears
escaping into dark brown locks.
Of course this would be impossible,
but, he had never failed a mission yet, and he wouldn’t fail this one now
either.
