Say Uncle?
Gohan was flabbergasted by the sight of Radditz, a man that was supposed to be related to him, a man that he hadn’t seen since he was very young. Their first encounter had been horrific and had gotten his father killed, a memory which he didn’t care to relive in his mind. He glared furiously at the long haired Saiyan before him, his feet spreading out against the terrain in stance mode, preparing to fight if necessary, after all he was much stronger now and could kick his uncle’s ass no problem; at least he was ninety nine percent certain anyway.
Goz and Mez glanced at one another, sharing an evil smirk as an idea popped into their little brains.
“Ah Radditz, good thing you’re here, we were just thinking of ways to get rid of the kid, but now we can just pawn him off on you”.
Goz shoved Gohan toward Radditz, the older Saiyan arching a thick brow at the two demons, “I don’t babysit little insecure children” he stated; the two demons however were already walking away. Radditz could have blown them to smithereens but then he would be locked back in the hot fires of the Volcano again, a place he had originally ended up in to pay for his actions when still alive.
“Radditz…” he hissed, his fists clenching, “There is no way I’m sticking around you!”.
Radditz hardly reacted to Gohan’s defensive body language towards him, shrugging his shoulders as he took a few small steps forward.
“I received rumor of your presence here and I thought I would see for myself if it were true… You look a lot like Kakarot you know… heh, how is my little brother?”
Gohan grit his teeth, ignoring the question, “I’m not even supposed to be here so you can just go back to whatever you were doing and leave me alone!”
Radditz smiled, it wasn’t genuine nor was it false, it was neutral, “Ah Gohan… you must think I’m terrible for what I did all those years ago, but I’ve changed since then… scouts honor”
Radditz was prone to sarcasm, even when he was being honest, though his nephew wouldn’t believe him regardless, and he didn’t expect that he would either,
“Well you can continue to act like a brat or you can follow me and get some food, you must be hungry no? Heh”.
Radditz turned his back and walked away, the demi glancing twice as he caught sight of the tail which the man still possessed… he shouldn’t have been surprised but he’d forgotten about his own tail long ago when it was painfully yanked out.
Unfortunately the boy was starving and the idea of turning down food made his stomach grumble in protest.
‘Okay eat but don’t get too comfortable’ he told himself, trailing after his uncle.
Gohan had expected a simple meal, nothing fancy since he was in hell, but when Radditz led him into the woods and toward a small hut the smell of food wafting from the open window made him salivate. Upon heading inside a feast was prepared and spread out across a large table, Radditz taking his place at the head of the table. Gohan hesitantly seated himself on the opposite end, just staring at his uncle, paranoid that perhaps the delicious food was made with poison or something… wouldn’t surprise him.
“Did you… make all this food?” Gohan inquired suspiciously.
Radditz snorted, gesturing with a finger toward a small red demon with an apron on, “Just because I’m a prisoner doesn’t mean I live like one” the man chuckled, giving Gohan a once over,
“Kid you’re far too tense, relax… oh and you might want to dig in now because when the others arrive, there won’t be much food to reach for”
‘Others?’ Gohan thought, as if on cue a group of five more entered the hut, filing in and taking their seats, one of them Gohan recognized immediately to be Nappa.
‘I can’t believe it! More Saiyans!? Oh Kame…’
“Who’s the runt?” asked Nappa, the more bulky Saiyan out of the group, all brawn and no brains, he hadn’t changed a bit. Nappa stared Gohan down until the boy was sliding down in his seat, not from fear, but feeling out of place.
“Kakarot’s boy” Radditz answered before biting into a drumstick, “He fell from above… He’ll be with us for awhile so get used to it”.
Awhile? How long is awhile? Gohan wondered, unsure if his father had even realized that he hadn’t come back from his walk yet. The boy put off his thoughts as he realized all the food was being eaten at a fast pace and he hadn’t even had any, so he reached out cautiously and filled his plate, avoiding eye contact with any of them.
Nappa snorted, tearing a chunk of meat from his steak and chewing obnoxiously, “Hn, he’s a whimp just like his father” he spat.
Gohan gave Nappa a dangerous look for his remark, his father was in no way, shape or form a coward, and the bald headed Saiyan knew that too. It seemed from his observations of the few Saiyans he’d encountered over the years that the majority of Saiyans were filled with far too much pride and delusional thinking to realize that they weren’t using any of their potential to be something other than a violent, raging ape. He was starting to think it was better than he was raised on earth, he would have turned out just like those sitting at the table with him if he’d been raised on planet Vegeta. He probably would have died and gone to hell long ago, even if he’d escaped the planet before Frieza destroyed it.
Radditz surveyed his nephew with growing interest, able to detect that the boy was in fact much stronger than before, yet he seemed just as fragile as the first time he’d laid eyes on him. He could tell the boy was uncomfortable, it amused him, perhaps he would have to see for himself just how much stronger the boy had become; it would definitely be a treat.
Gohan met his Uncle’s gaze just as he was biting into a cob of corn, pausing for half a second and then continuing, annoyed that his uncle was watching… Why was he watching him?
******
Goku stood with his arms crossed and his brows furrowed together in frustration, he was already contemplating jumping off of snake way, after all his boy could be in danger. That notion almost drove the full Saiyan mad with worry, determining that the only option was to head down into the depths of hell and search. Just as Goku was about to leap however Gregory fluttered in his face as a means to stop him while Bubbles yanked on his pants to pull him back, “Ah! Come on guys I’ve got to save Gohan, quit it”.
King Kai gasped for air as he came flailing over a small heap on the pathway, “Goku! Don’t even think about it! You have no idea what you’re doing!”
Goku huffed, rubbing the back of his head, “But King Kai Gohan could be in trouble and I’m just standing here!”
The blue Kai shook his head, “Goku if you go into hell without a pass from King Yemma you won’t even be able to get back to Snakeway when you find Gohan! Sheesh you always think these matters are so simple, think you can blast away and you’ll have your way! –“
Goku let out an exasperated sigh, a sweat drop running down the side of his thick haired skull as King Kai went on another rant, “King Kai? King Kai!! Okay I get it, so if I go to King Yemma will he give me the pass right away or what?”.
King Kai paused, shaking his head, “Nonsense, King Yemma must first seek permission from all the other Kais in the universe before he can even consider giving you a pass Goku… Hell is no place for the living or for those that don’t belong!”
Goku groaned, it seemed the process to rescue his son would take longer than he would have liked, “Well… I shouldn’t waste anymore time! Thanks King Kai!” the full Saiyan waved before speeding off along Snakeway, ‘Don’t worry Gohan I’m on my way…’.
******
Gohan rested the side of his face in one hand, sitting on a rock a small distance away from his uncle, just observing the man as he sat with the others in a cloud of cigar smoke, the smell bothered him so he had moved. He realized that Radditz and his father looked nothing alike, particularly in facial structure; their frames were about the same in height and width now, unlike back when Radditz first arrived on earth and Goku was still young, there was a drastic size difference then. Goku’s smile was his best feature, those full lips curving upward into a beautiful smile… that’s what attracted Gohan. Radditz obtained no appealing features, well except maybe his long thick hair. His uncle’s eyes were dark and intimidating though, much like Vegeta’s; unfriendly and unwelcoming…
Gohan must have been concentrating too hard on his thoughts because when he finally blinked he could see shoes and then a pair of legs, gradually his gaze lifted, soon staring up into the face of Radditz who for some reason was watching him again.
“Why don’t you show me how much you’ve improved hm?”
Gohan blinked, “You mean… my power?”
His uncle gave him a dull look; of course that’s what he meant.
Gohan rose to his feet, wanting to get back to his father but he accepted the challenge anyway, after all it wasn’t like he could just fly out of hell, it wasn’t that simple. Things were never simple for him it seemed.
“Alright, but don’t be surprised when I beat you Radditz”
Radditz simply chuckled, “I look forward to it”
Gohan was almost thankful he was already in his fighting gear as they both took stance opposite of each other upon the flat red terrain. Radditz had chosen a nice open space as to avoid too much damage to what little scenery there was in hell; after all they had no jurisdiction. Apparently the other Saiyans had spread the word quickly that there was going to be a fight, because minutes later there were hundreds of demons lined up on the outskirts that wanted to watch.
The demi knew he could just power up to the point just before super Saiyan and that would be enough to end the fight before it even began, but he chose not to, he wanted to drag it out. He never did get to see his uncle’s full potential on the battle field, and now he had the opportunity, plus there was a small part of him that was just dying to show off and push the other male to his limit. This was just a regular match; it wasn’t as if Earth was depending on him this time, so he didn’t have to feel bad if he took up time just by toying with his uncle.
*****
Goku was already impatient as he stood in the ridiculously long line up consisting of fresh souls which had yet to be sorted. When he finally stood before King Yemma he made haste explaining that his son was stuck in hell and he needed to get down there to save him. King Yemma rubbed a large hand over his bearded chin in contemplation, nodding after a moment and whispering something to his white horned assistant.
Goku frowned, “King Yemma, I’m sorry but how long is this going to take exactly? I’m worried for my son’s safety”
King Yemma could only shrug as his assistant hurried away, “That I’m not sure of, there are many Kais to get a hold of Goku, perhaps you should eat something while you wait?”
Normally Goku would be all for a delicious feast, but he felt guilty about enjoying it when Gohan was all alone and probably scared. The hero shook his head, no… Gohan was like him; he wouldn’t give up and let anybody bully him around without a fight! With much reluctance Goku followed another horned fellow through a door and into a cozy setup where food awaited him.
“Okay I’ll eat, but I really need that permission from the kais soon!”
*****
Radditz had already broken a sweat as the two clashed repeatedly and fought for the upper hand in their match. Gohan was simply having fun though he had underestimated his uncle a small bit, the older Saiyan could take his hits better than cell, which was saying something. He wouldn’t have guessed that Radditz had spent the majority of his days in hell training and gaining more power. Gohan wasn’t intimidated though; it just meant he got to show off Super Saiyan mode after all. The boy gained some distance from his uncle as they hovered in mid air, allowing himself to transform before his uncle’s eyes, the man oddly enough seeming unfazed by the transformation.
“Ah Super Saiyan eh? No problem, I suppose I should transform also” Radditz mused, letting out a short cry before his hair ignited to gold and his hues to turquoise. Gohan’s jaw dropped as he gaped at his uncle, ‘What!? No way! He’s a super Saiyan too!?’
With Gohan still stunned, Radditz was given the chance to zoom forward and knock the wind out of the boy with a swift kick to the abdomen; the demi sailed back several yards before being able to stop himself.
“When did you… become… a Super Saiyan?” Gohan asked, thinking that only himself, his father, Trunks and Vegeta had the ability to supersede regular Saiyan abilities.
Radditz smirked, “Awhile back… I’d say at least two years ago… You forget that I am also powerful Gohan, did you think I would be soft?”
Gohan rubbed the back of his head, a bit disappointed at first he had to admit, but then again, there was the fact that he had achieved super Saiyan two, a level which surely Radditz had no clue about. Gohan grinned then, shutting his eyes and quivering lightly as he escalated to super Saiyan two, his appearance hadn’t altered but his power level certainly spiked tenfold.
It was Radditz’s turn to look amazed as he watched his nephew, he had no idea there was a second level to Super Saiyan! “What? Impossible…” he mumbled to himself.
“Shall we resume?” the boy chuckled, accumulating energy in his palms and then blasting it toward his uncle, the older Saiyan dodging though not without taking a deep gash to his right shoulder, the flesh tearing and oozing out blood.
Radditz growled, barreling himself toward his Nephew and ending up chest to chest with the boy as their arms locked together, trying to force one another into a choke hold. The roars of the demon crowd in the background were no distraction fortunately, though both males were determined to best the other.
“You’re better… than I thought… Brat” the long haired male hissed out.
Gohan grit his teeth, observing the veins jut against his uncle’s flesh; he was slowly overcoming the other in strength, “You’re not… As weak… as I thought… but I’m still… better”
Gohan ended the struggle by kicking his uncle in the chest and then blasting him immediately after, his uncle catching the weight of the blast in his hands as he hit the ground. With the force of the blast weighing on the Saiyan he soon began to sink into the terrain, forming a crater before managing to kick the blast away.
Gohan intended to charge again as his second blast caused an explosion farther off, however he couldn’t move as two golden ringlets closed around his body. He fell to the ground in a matter of seconds, grunting as he hit and then found himself staring up at Goz, the demon glaring down at him.
“Alright you two that’s enough! don’t make us throw you two in the volcano!” Mez threatened, the crowd booing as the fight was disrupted and permanently put on hold.
Radditz stood with a huff and rolled his eyes, “You ruined our fun you useless twits” he grumbled, staring down at Gohan as he fought to try and release himself from his bindings. The older male actually laughed as he walked over to Gohan, observing him squirm before kneeling down to help the boy then. The demi managed to break free before he could do so.
“Shut up…” Gohan muttered, powering down and rising to his feet, his uncle standing upright again.
Radditz enjoyed seeing the demi all worked up for some reason, even if they didn’t get to finish their fight, “Hm, good fight I suppose… You’ll do better next time though won’t you?”
Gohan’s left eye twitched in annoyance, he knew his uncle was messing with him now, he could have beaten the man senseless if he’d wanted to, but he hadn’t been given the chance. ‘Next time…’ would there even be a next time? Surely Goku was searching for him by now… the boy hoped.
“So… what now?” he questioned dully, pinching the material of his purple gi and trying to prevent it from sticking to his sweaty body.
“How about a bath?” Radditz suggested, not waiting for a reply as he turned and drifted across the open plain, intending to bathe in the hot springs behind his hut.
*****
Goku ended up eating more than he thought he would (No surprise there), piles of empty bowls and plates surrounding him as he finally stood up and patted his full belly.
“Thanks for the food!” he told the servers whom were left to do all of his dishes, the full Saiyan hurrying back out into the main hall of King Yemma’s palace.
“King Yemma! Please tell me you’ve gotten the permission I need!?”
King Yemma finished signing his signature in gold ink before handing a letter down to Goku, “Here, yes I have gathered the permission from all kais, you may go down into hell now, but be careful Goku!”
Goku sighed with relief, “Yes! Thanks a bunch King Yemma! See you guys later!” he shouted as he immediately took off along Snakeway.
He reached the halfway point on the scaled path before he decided to just leap down, feeling his stomach churn from eating too much as he descended. He caught himself just before landing, hovering two inches or so from the terrain, “Huh…” was all Goku could respond with at the sight before him. He’d never really imagined hell before so seeing it for the first time just reminded him of the dangers on other planets that he’d endured while traveling.
“Gohan!?” the father called out, receiving no reply, “Gosh I wonder where Gohan has ended up… hopefully somewhere safe…”
*****
Gohan felt embarrassed stripping down in front of his uncle, but apparently the other male didn’t feel the same way because he simply removed his warrior attire and stepped down in the hot water. He followed suit though he took a little longer, trying to avoid being looked at by Radditz. When he finally slid into the hot spring he let out a sigh, his body relaxing up against the stone.
“You’re a good fighter Gohan, much better than I was at your age…” Radditz piped up, stealing a glance at his Nephew as the boy perked up, “So tell me… how exactly did you die?” the man questioned, focusing on Gohan’s halo for a moment.
Gohan didn’t want to answer the question, he was still feeling guilty about prolonging his fight with Cell and making his father sacrifice himself. He supposed that was the other reason he had decided to die with his father; it was entirely his fault.
Radditz could see the sad conflict in the demi’s face and decided not to press further, instead changing the subject, “Is your father coming for you or what?”
Gohan shrugged, “I hope so… I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t though…” before he could be questioned further he turned the focus on his uncle instead, “Why are you watching over me? Can those two demon guys really make you?”
Radditz chuckled and shook his head, “I’m watching you because you’re my nephew, not because of what Goz and Mez say”
Gohan arched a brow, “But you hate me… you hate my father…”
At first it seemed as if Radditz wasn’t going to respond anymore, Gohan watched as he splashed water in his face and wet his long mane of hair. He observed the scar marks on his uncle’s body, not realizing that he obtained so many, his father’s body had none, it was smooth and perfect.
“I used to, people change” Radditz answered simply, smirking at Gohan then before abruptly pulling the boy toward him and holding him up by his arms, “Are you frightened?”
Gohan blushed heavily and tried to cover himself as he was held up in the air, “N-No! Now put me down!” he protested, groaning quietly in humiliation as Radditz laughed again…
Without warning he was released and he fell back into the pool, springing up shortly after and lunging at his uncle, the two wrestling in the water. What was thought to turn into a full out spar again ended up as friendly fire, the demi finding himself in his uncle’s grasp again. When Gohan suddenly stopped trying to get loose Radditz held the boy back at arm’s length to see what was wrong, finding him staring at the major scar on his chest.
“Frieza…” Radditz muttered with a hint of bitterness in his tone, “You know of him?”.
Gohan nodded lightly, “My father was the one who killed him…”.
Radditz smirked again, “Not surprised…”
From what Gohan could remember of Radditz back when he was a child, he seemed far more aggressive then than he was now, some of the same attitude showing through however a lot had changed in the older Saiyan, it was apparent by his softened features. Gohan’s hands took hold of his uncle’s, though he didn’t ask him to put him down again, “I don’t know how you stand being down here for all eternity…”
Radditz shrugged this time, “You get what you deserve in the afterlife kid, remember that, I killed many people… I’m sorry your father got killed because of me… I imagine the dragon resurrected him hm?”
Gohan blinked, “How do you know about that?”
“Years ago I tried to escape this place, thinking I could get a hold of the dragon balls and wish myself back to life… I’d heard of the dragon balls from Vegeta when he was here after being killed by Frieza”
Gohan wanted to shake his head though he refrained; Vegeta could never keep his big mouth shut, not even toward people that could be potentially harmful. The demi drew a finger against the scar on his uncle’s chest, feeling a bit more at ease around the man.
“I miss my father…” the boy confessed, frowning and leaning into his uncle, the wide and muscular chest reminding him of Goku’s body, the warmth the same yet the scent was slightly off.
Radditz circled his arms tighter around Gohan’s body, squeezing him reassuringly, “I’m sure he misses you too…” he uttered quietly, a small part of the man actually hoping that Goku didn’t come to fetch his son too soon…
*****
Goku grew tired of searching on foot since hell seemed to be vaster than he’d expected, intending to take flight when he bumped into something hard. Goku gazed up at the red and blue pair, “Oh, uh, hello… have you guys seen an eleven year old boy by chance? He’s my-“
“Ah! It’s you!” Mez stated hysterically, “The only other guy in the world except for King Yemma that could catch me in a game of tag!”
Goku scratched his head in confusion at first, but then realization struck him, “Oh hey! I remember you two! Long time no see!”
Goz face palmed while Mez seemed to pout, “Yeah, yeahhh, what are you doing back here?”
Goku switched from light spirited to determined again, “My son Gohan fell from above and he’s stuck here, King Yemma gave me a notice of permission so that Gohan and I can get out without any problems when I find him”
Goz and Mez glanced at one another, both of their faces paling, “Uh… I don’t think I’ve seen a boy around here” Goz muttered nervously, the two recalling how they had handed the kid off to one of their toughest prisoners.
Goku hung his head, wishing he could find his son already, he really needed to speak with him, “Darn it… alright I guess I’ll keep looking then, thanks guys”
Goku took to the air, speeding through the sky as his orbs scaled the land mass below for any sign of his son, freezing suddenly as he spotted someone below, no wait more than one, there were two of them, they seemed to be bathing in some sort of pool. The hero flew closer in order to get a better look, realizing the two figures were close together, hugging, “Gohan?” he quietly muttered, stopping and just lingering as he observed his son in another man’s arms… but who’s? Goku peered closer…. RADDITZ!?
Gohan stirred after awhile of just leaning into his uncle, having fallen into a trance out of comfort, “Er… Ra- Uncle Radditz?” he questioned, looking up at his uncle and finding the man staring down at him with calm eyes. Before Gohan could muster another word he found warm lips against his own, just as Goku got close enough to speak… Goku just hovered there…. speechless…
