The Divine Returns
Eight years later…
Kakarot sighed as the usual boys blocked his path. When will they ever learn? He adjusted the pails and the five sacks of food in his arms and on his shoulder as he waited for them to make the first move…as usual. The leader of the pack, the tallest of them, stood defiant as he stared down the other. Kakarot quirked an eyebrow at him, as if daring the boy to go against him again. After a few moments of silence, the boy finally thought of something to say. “Don’t think you can intimidate us just because you have a demon on your side! It gave you some sort of power the last time it was here!” The taller pointed and shouted out his annoyance at the other.
Kakarot sighed again. “Think what you like. Either way, you won’t intimidate me in return.” He smirked when the boy shouted in his rage and charged at him.
However, Kakarot merely stood to the side as the boy ran past. The others just watched as their leader took on the outcast. They knew better than to go against the boy. After all, in the last eight years, they’ve been eating the dirt ‘they’ walked on. For some reason, their leader chose not to listen to reason and continued to eat the dirt. The tall boy stopped himself and turned sharply, delivering an uppercut to Kakarot’s head, who ducked and turned, causing one of the pails to hit the boy in the back. The boy yelped at the unexpected movement as Kakarot moved back, somehow not spilling any water and not bothering to drop the sacks of food in his hands. He knew better. In the past, when he would set his things down to settle a brawl with the boy, the others would take off with them. Now he kept them with him, besides, it was good training. Even though the two pails of water and five sacks of food, which was his limit in carrying the supplies, made him heavier, they also made him stronger. Doing this made it seem like he was fluid in his movements, even without the supplies.
The boy went to punch the other in the face, but Kakarot merely stepped to the side again, although a bit closer to the boy. So, when the boy went to attack again, he just stepped away again and began to shadow the boy’s movements. Doing this caused the boy to have blind spots and couldn’t see his opponent, but before he could turn around, Kakarot elbowed the arrogant boy in the back, which only stunned him. When the boy recuperated, he then tried to hit the other behind him, but Kakarot stepped away and placed a foot in front of the other’s, causing the boy to step towards him and lose his balance. Once he hit the ground, Kakarot stood over him with an innocent gaze. “Are you alright? You really need to control that anger of yours. Otherwise, you might really get hurt one of these days.” Kakarot said simply as he waited for the boy to make another move.
The taller would usually hit the ground a few times before he gave up. The boy growled at the other’s words and picked himself back up, ready for more. Kakarot smirked at the other’s persistence. “I like how you never give up. You would make a great warrior one of these days. It’s too bad your eyes are clouded by your hatred.”
The boy appeared to stay on task, trying not to be swayed by the other’s words and charged again. The useless fighting lasted for a while longer as the others began to grow bored. “Come on, Ikido! Haven’t you had enough of this guy already?”
“Yeah! We’re getting tired of you fighting him all the time! It’s no fun anymore.” Another said as he kicked at the dirt on the ground.
They waited a moment to see if anything would change, when nothing did, they decided to leave their leader behind and headed home. After all, who wanted to watch the same thing every day, knowing the outcome of the fight? Kakarot noticed the others were leaving out of the corner of his eye and focused back on the taller. “You should listen to your friends and join them. After all, you’re wasting your energy doing this every day when you could be helping the others in the fields or go hunting like any other man would do.”
Ikido yelled and tried to get in a hit, but missed. “No! I won’t give up until I’ve defeated you and show everyone else what you really are! A thief and a murderer! You don’t deserve to be here! You’re not like the others!”
Kakarot stood in his stance as he adjusted the supplies. They were getting heavy and he was hoping to have dinner prepared soon. “Maybe if you were nicer to me, you wouldn’t be so afraid of me. After all, if others treated me like I treat them, then there wouldn’t be a reason for the demon to despise you so.” He was undeterred from the words the other spoke. They all said the same thing. He only called the being a demon so others wouldn’t argue with him on what he actually is, but Kakarot was sure that He wasn’t one. They called him a thief and a murderer because of the fortune he received from the being and his grandfather passed away a few years back from an illness. He believed it was the same one that killed his father that Gohan told him about. Either way, the only thing that mattered is that he knew the truth. It didn’t matter what the other’s thought.
The taller boy looked at him with surprise. Apparently, he couldn’t think of anything to say to that. However, he recuperated and answered. “I won’t believe anything you tell me! You’re just as foul as that demon!”
Kakarot sighed for the third time that day. “Is that all you have to say? The same words of anger you’ve been speaking to me for the last ten years of my life? If you don’t mind, I have other things I need to be doing than playing with you.” With that said, Kakarot turned and headed for home. However, the other wasn’t going to let him go that easy and charged at him again. This time, Kakarot was none too gentle when he kicked the boy in the stomach, sending him flying into the dirt. He only glared at the disgraceful form before sending a threat his way. “If you have the audacity to attack someone when their back is turned, then you should look behind you when someone does the same to you.” Again, he turned and headed towards his destination, however, he was cautious as he eyed the boy behind him, who was still on the ground.
When Kakarot reached a certain point on his path, he stopped and set the supplies on the ground. He grunted as he took a seat on a boulder and stretched his arms and shoulders, trying to get the blood flowing in them again before continuing on. He stared off into the horizon at the descending sun. It was almost sunset. This was Kakarot’s favorite part of the day. The sun gave off such wondrous colors before leaving this side of the world and it was the end of the day. Back then, he was grateful for when the day ended because then his punishment would end and he can go safely back to his home with his grandfather. However, he’d almost cry whenever the morning greeted him again, then it was another day of torture. At times, Kakarot would blame the being coming for him because he believed he was the reason behind his suffering. If he wasn’t chosen to be His fated one, then perhaps he could have lived a better life. He told this to his grandfather, who told him that it probably would’ve been the same either way or worse. If the being didn’t appear when he did, then neither of them would probably be there. Instead, it’s only Kakarot that survived. Sometimes, he wondered if he would die the same way his father and grandfather did.
Kakarot shook his head as images of his dying grandfather began to enter his head and stood. A glimmer of light caught his attention as he stared over at a straw hut a little ways away from him. A man with a missing leg sat in front of his home as his wife came to tell him it was dinner time. Kakarot’s features saddened at the man as he bent over and picked up his supplies then began down the path again. There was another war going on and it was on this continent. The bravest men from the village went to be a part of it, only to never come back or don’t come back the way they went. Either men were missing limbs or their minds, it was a depressing time for anyone. At first, Kakarot didn’t blame the boys for picking fights with him because he thought they just needed to vent out their frustration from losing their fathers. The boy he was just fighting was one of them. He seemed to be taking it really hard, though. Fighting him was probably the only thing taking the grief off of the boy’s mind. However, Kakarot didn’t think getting beaten every day by someone he hated would be a good way to relieve some of that grief.
It was a short distance from the village to his home. He built a new home in a different location out of wood. It had the same structure as the straw huts but with doors and windows. He used the money the questionable man gave him and his grandfather all those years ago and built a better home than that straw hovel. Not only was it not fit to live in, but it reminded him of his grandfather. It would fill him with grief thinking that when he came home, he would be waiting for him. Only to realize the cold hard truth that he wasn’t. Instead, he burned the home and buried his grandfather where it stood. He marked it with two sticks and stayed at the burial until morning. That was when he was around twelve years old.
This time, however, Kakarot was surprised to see someone waiting for him. A man with flame-shaped hair and wearing middle class clothing sat in one of the wooden chairs he carved. A moment passed before the man looked his way. “Well, are you going to stand there all day or are you coming in?” The man asked in a gruff voice before standing to come and greet him.
It took a minute for Kakarot to recognize the man and catch up to the present. “It’s…been eight years already?” He asked in surprise. It seemed like he just met the man the other day.
Vegeta continued to advance towards him. “Yes. Amazing how time flies, is it not?” He stopped right in front of him and studied his supplies and his appearance. “My, look how strong you’ve become.” He smiled at Kakarot as He waited for a response.
Kakarot shook his head slightly before gushing. “You…think so? I’ve been training hard so I can become strong like You.” He blushed lightly at his own words before entering his home. “Are You staying long? I can make us some dinner.” He set his supplies near the fire pit before kneeling before it and started on making the fire. Vegeta didn’t answer as He watched him for a moment before moving beside the other and watched him work. Kakarot noticed the attention and blushed lightly again. “Uh, I haven’t quite yet mastered how to get a fire going in an instant, but so far I’ve got it down to around thirty minutes.” He continued to work at getting the fire started as he tried to ignore the other’s stare.
However, his work was futile as Vegeta bent down and snapped His fingers, causing a spark to ignite from them and hit the logs; causing the fire to start. Kakarot looked at the growing fire in shock, and then slowly looked up at the man above him, who stood and watched the fire grow. “That should do it.” He walked across the room and looked out the glass windows and peered at the village with His hands placed loosely behind His back.
Kakarot dropped the sticks he usually used to start the fire and stood to continue to stare at the other in shock. “H-How…did you…?” He couldn’t finish his sentence after witnessing something so…impossible. Just who was this man?
Vegeta knew what he was asking and sighed as He continued to stare out the window. “I’ll explain it to you later. Right now, go ahead and make your dinner.”
Kakarot continued staring at the other as his expression became more serious, but the shock remained. “No. Explain it to me now. If I’m to go with You, then I need to know who I’m going with.”
Vegeta slowly turned from the window and to His fated one. He narrowed His eyes at him and said, “In due time.”
Kakarot was losing his patience. “Why not now?!”
Vegeta made His way to the chair again and made Himself comfortable. “You won’t believe me.”
The other was confused. “After what I just saw You do, I think I’ll believe You.”
Vegeta stared at the fire He made with a simple snap of His fingers. “Oh, I can do so much more than that, but I don’t want you to think what everyone else thinks. I think it’s only fair that you should spend some time with me before I tell you everything.”
Kakarot calmed a bit at the man’s explanation and thought of something else he could bring to light. “The last time You visited, grandpa told me that You would refer to me as Your fated one. At the time, neither of us knew what it meant, but when I got older, I learned that it can mean…” He trailed off for a moment as another blush formed over his cheeks. “Lover. Am I wrong?” He forced himself to look at the other while his blush remained.
Vegeta watched him speak, but turned away when he finished. “Well, there’s one less thing I have to explain.”
Kakarot tried not to flinch at the truth and turned towards the fire. “Why me?” He whispered more to himself than to the being behind him.
Vegeta stared at the other’s back and sighed inwardly. “You were chosen. However, I didn’t choose you. For some reason, the Gods believe you are fit for me. Perhaps I still have to find out why. You may be forced to come with me, but you get a choice later on.”
Kakarot turned. “Choice? What do I get to choose?”
Vegeta shook His head slightly. “You’ll find out later.”
Kakarot exploded. “I hate this! You’re keeping so much from me! I don’t know who You are! I don’t know why You’re here! I don’t even know if I want to go with You!” He collapsed on the ground and stewed in his frustration. Vegeta looked at him with tired, but sympathetic eyes and said nothing. When Kakarot seemed to get a hold of himself more, he decided to try again. “At least tell me when we’re leaving.”
Vegeta stared at the fire again. “Today. So hurry up and make your dinner.”
Kakarot snapped his head up. “Today? Why today?!” He felt so unprepared. His grandfather told him He would come for him after his eighteenth year, but there was a possibility that it would be his sixteenth year.
Vegeta stood. “You mortals don’t live very long, so I decided to come for you while you were still young, but old enough to take care of yourself.”
“Mortals?” Kakarot whispered to himself. Is He not human? Well, that answer might be obvious. Is He an immortal of sorts? What if He ‘was’ a demon? Kakarot didn’t think he could live with a demon. He had to be sure. “Are…are You a demon?” He asked with fear and uncertainty more than curiosity.
The being glared down at the other. He knew the boy would ask this of Him because of what the other humans thought of Him. “No.” He growled out as He watched for the others’ reaction.
Kakarot seemed relieved. “I always knew You weren’t, but for some reason, I was having doubts just now.”
Vegeta sneered at his words. “I didn’t plan this. I made a deal. I’m being forced into this predicament just as you are. We both may not like it, but we either deal with it or wait it out until it’s time to make your decision. Now, finish your meal and get packed. Take everything you need. We will leave when you are ready.” With that, He left the wooded hut and paced around outside.
Kakarot watched the man leave and pondered over the words He said. After a while, he gave up on what they could mean and decided to do what the man said.
After two hours of waiting, Vegeta decided to go back in and check on the younger. Kakarot was slowly packing up his things and didn’t turn towards Him. Vegeta wanted to sigh in exhaustion. This wasn’t the way He wanted to start off things. When Kakarot finished packing, he adorned warmer clothing and slung the sheet he wrapped his things in and tied it around himself, then turned towards the other. Vegeta noted how well equipped the other was and went over to collect His things that He dropped off there when He arrived. Kakarot didn’t even notice them before. Neither said a word as they exited the home and began their journey on the path that lead away from the village. The setting sun embraced the small village with its evening colors as if it was also saying goodbye. Kakarot paused to stare at the small community and his home one last time.
“Where are we going?” Kakarot asked, not facing his new companion behind him.
Vegeta came over to stand next to His fated one and answered as best as He could. “Wherever I’m needed.”
Kakarot turned towards the other with a look of confusion. “Where You’re needed?”
Vegeta just nodded and left it at that, then turned towards the empty fields of green as Kakarot stared at His back. “Come along now. I would like to reach the next village before dawn.” He called over His shoulder as Kakarot shook himself from his thoughts and followed Him.
