Trowa looked up when Quatre stepped into his office, followed by Wufei. The blond sat in the chair on the other side of Trowa’s desk and smiled. “Are you settling in okay?”
Trowa nodded. “Yes. Your previous accountant was very organized and it was very easy to step into his shoes.”
“He was very good. It was hard to see him go, but after fifty years with us he definitely earned his retirement.” He leaned his elbows on his knees. “So, what did you think of Duo?”
Wufei rolled his eyes. “Subtle, Quatre, very subtle.”
He grinned as he glanced over his shoulder to his lover. “Subtlety is overrated.” He looked back to Trowa. “Well?”
He settled back in his chair. “He seems very nice.”
“That’s it?”
Trowa raised an eyebrow. “And he’s easy on the eyes. I don’t know him well enough yet to say much else.”
Wufei chuckled. “You’ll have to forgive him. He’s a hopeless romantic.”
Quatre looked to his lover. “This from the man who surprised me with a trip to Paris on our fourth anniversary.”
The Chinese man flushed slightly but smirked. “That was a memorable week.”
Trowa appraised the couple with a small smile, envious of their relationship. “You’re married?”
The blond nodded. “Six years next month.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, we had the ceremony six years ago. Technically we weren’t married until two years later when it became legal here.” He shook his head and stood. “Anyway, Duo said you two were having dinner on Friday. I hope you enjoy your evening.”
Trowa stared at the door after they left. He was halfway through the first week and had to admit that he was very glad things hadn’t worked out with Dermail. Winner Enterprises had a more laid back feel and most of the employees were friends outside of work. He figured it made sense. Quatre was a very good boss and worked hard to make sure his employees were taken care of.
As far as the job was concerned, Trowa was content. His biggest problem was Duo. He found it interesting that Quatre was pushing him toward Duo. His boss didn’t know anything about him outside of his sexual preference and his resume. And he didn’t know them very well, either.
His mind drifted to the note sitting in his wallet. Duo hadn’t even asked him, he’d just assumed Trowa would show. He wasn’t sure what he thought about that level of confidence. Or maybe Duo was sure because he had Quatre to remind Trowa of the date.
What would happen if things didn’t work out? Surely Quatre wouldn’t hold it against him. Going out with Duo could end up being the worst mistake of his life. He sighed and rubbed his forehead. Thinking about it was only going to give him a headache.
-----Quatre locked his office door and Wufei found himself turned quickly, his lips captured in a hot kiss. He was pushed back until his ass hit the desk and he pulled his mouth back to suck in a breath. “What brought this on?”“Paris,” the blond whispered as he trailed his lips down Wufei’s neck.
The Asian chuckled but it melted to a moan when his lover ground his growing erection against Wufei’s. That had been one of the best trips they’d ever taken together, though they hadn’t exactly seen much of the city while they were there. The suite was quite remarkable, though. He vividly remembered the mirror above the bed and shivered.
The phone rang and Quatre groaned, pulling reluctantly from his husband to answer it. “Yes?”
“Hey, Quatre, you busy?”
He grunted. “Well I was.”
He laughed. “Getting frisky in the office, are we?”
“Was there something you needed?”
“Yeah, actually. The apartment above mine has some pipe issues and I’ve got a flood. They’re gonna have to do some renovation. I just got the call so I’m not sure how bad it is, I’m heading over there now. Anyway, do you think it’d be possible, if I need to, to stay with you while they do repairs?”
“Of course. You can stay as long as you need to.”
“Thanks.”
Quatre hung up and pressed the intercom. “Jerri?”
“Yes sir?”
“Hold all my calls.”
Wufei swore he heard a smirk in the secretary’s voice as she said, “of course, sir.”
Quatre turned back to his husband with a sultry smirk that sent heat through Wufei. “Now, where were we?”
Wufei knew there was no point in fighting it once his lover started, no matter how improper the time or place might be, so he allowed those full lips to take his own in a demanding kiss.
-----“I’m sorry, Mr. Maxwell, it was much worse than we thought.”Duo stared into the bathroom from the middle of the living room. “No shit.” The joining closet to the bathroom as well as half the bedroom and the hallway had flooded. He hadn’t lost too much as most of his equipment was still in the trunk of his car from a photo session late yesterday. There were some clothes and shoes that had been in the closet, but not enough to warrant filing an insurance claim, though.
“I wish I had an open apartment to offer you.”
“It’s fine. I can stay at my friend’s until I find another place.”
The manager nodded. “If you’ll follow me to the office I’ll refund your deposit and this month’s rent.”
Duo nodded and followed the heartbroken woman. He’d hate to be in her position with four apartments now unlivable and in need of renovation. He left from the complex with no real plans for the day. He toyed with the idea of stopping by Winner Enterprises and making a surprise visit to one very hot accountant, but he wasn’t sure if that’d be too much too soon.
He was pulled from trying to decide what to do with himself when his phone range. He didn’t recognize the number and would have normally let it go to voicemail, but he was bored and decided it might be fun to mess with whoever had called a wrong number.
“Moshi moshi.”
A moment of silence. “You speak Japanese?”
He frowned, somewhat recognizing the voice but not quite placing it. “Who is this?”
“Heero, Trowa’s friend. This is Duo, right?”
“Yeah.”
“I need to talk to you. Can you meet me at Starbucks?”
“The dreaded ‘hurt my friend and I’ll kill you’ speech?” He chuckled. “Sure. See you there.”
He hung up and pulled into a near parking lot to turn around. He’d never been on this end of that speech before, but he’d had it given on his behalf. He doubted he’d ever forget the wary look on Solo’s face through their first date. Wufei had apparently given the man quite a few things to think about.
He stepped into the coffee shop and didn’t see Heero so he ordered and Irish Cream latte and sat at a table. A few minutes later Heero came in, ordered his coffee, and sat in front of Duo.
“Thank you for meeting me.”
“No prob. Go ahead and make your promises of bodily harm.”
Heero chuckled. “I’ll just let that go without saying.” He sipped his coffee. “I’m not going to give you his life story because it’s his place to do that if he wants to. I’ll just say we’re each other’s’ family. We were all we had for a long time.”
Duo tilted his head slightly. “Were you two lovers?”
“No, more like brothers.”
Duo smiled. “I feel the same way about Quatre and Wufei.”
Heero rested his arms on the table and took a breath. “Trowa is the strongest person I know. He’s kind, intelligent, and extremely giving once he opens up; which he doesn’t normally do easily. As strong as he is, he’s also vulnerable. I don’t want to see him hurt again.”
From the dark shadow that briefly flickered through the blue eyes, Duo surmised that however Trowa had been hurt, it had been very bad. “I can’t promise I won’t hurt him, but I’m not out to hurt him. I’ve never intentionally hurt anyone. I’ve been on my own for a long time and Quatre has been practically beating me over the head to get back out there.”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “To be honest, I wasn’t happy with the set up, but when I saw him and talked with him… So far, he’s exactly what I’m looking for in a partner.” He shrugged. “But only time will tell.”
Heero smiled. “Thank you for your honesty.”
He laughed softly. “It’s kinda my thing.”
“Good to know.”
-----Trowa stepped out of the elevator on the ground floor, shifting the strap of his laptop case on his shoulder. It was a fairly stupid habit, he mused, to carry it on the previously injured shoulder that still ached from time to time.“You’ve got to be shitting me!”
He glanced over at the exclamation and found a man glaring at him. He glanced to the name badge on the man’s chest. Chris Stevens, Marketing. “Do you have a problem with me?”
“The name Kent Stevens mean anything to you?”
Trowa’s heart skipped a beat before he settled it and narrowed his eyes. “I take it you’re related to him.”
“He’s my brother.”
Trowa tipped his head. “I send you my condolences, then.”
He grabbed Trowa’s arm and pulled him to the side, out of view of prying eyes. “What the hell is a tramp like you doing in a respectable place like this?”
He sneered and jerked his arm free. “I don’t know what the hell you think I am, but a tramp is far from it. Your brother got what he deserved.”
“And what do you think Winner would do if he knew he hired someone like you?”
Trowa turned back to the man, leveling him with a cold gaze Zechs had once said was the most unnerving thing he’d ever seen. “I earned my position here. Don’t blame me you’re too incompetent to move up the ranks.”
He left the building, knowing his calm mask was in place, but seething inside. If Stevens wanted to cause trouble, he surely could. Hopefully he would get over what had happened between Trowa and Stevens’ brother. He fell in his car, gripping the steering wheel so tight the leather creaked.
“Shit.”
-----“Have you heard from Trowa?” Zechs asked as he checked himself in the floor length mirror.Heero glanced over from the vanity. “We talked last night. He says it’s going well. And I had a meeting with Duo yesterday.”
Zechs raised a brow as he looked to his lover. “How’d that go?”
He looked back to the mirror and continued applying the eyeliner. “He seems like a good guy, kind of quirky. I think he may be really good for Trowa.” He dropped the liner back in the container and grabbed a billowy blue shirt, draping it over his shoulders and closing three snaps at his waist.
He turned to appraise his lover and smirked before pulling Zechs to him until they were flush together. “Have I told you how hot you look in that?”
The blond gripped Heero’s hips in his hands. “Really? You say that now, but in about,” he glanced to the clock, “thirty minutes I know you’ll be ripping it off of me.”
He kissed the blond, taking his bottom lip between his teeth before pulling back slightly. “What can I say? Perks of the job.”
Zechs chuckled, running his hands up and down Heero’s sides. His mirth settled slightly and he looked into blue eyes made brighter by the hint of eyeliner. When they’d met, Zechs’ first thought had been that the Japanese man was extremely hot, but the biggest son of a bitch he’d ever known. After threats of losing their jobs from the boss they’d met one night at Zechs’ apartment to get to the root of why they couldn’t seem to get along.
It had been a very strange night. One minute they were yelling about each other’s faults, the next they were fucking on the floor. And they’d been together ever since. They went from solo acts to partners on stage. But something was changing in Zechs’ mind and a growing part of him didn’t like the idea of hundreds of men drooling over Heero’s body anymore. Heero was his.
“Do you ever think about getting out of this line of work? I mean, this isn’t exactly a lifelong career.”
Heero tilted his head slightly. “What made you think about this now?”
He shrugged. “Trowa, I guess.”
Heero nodded, brows furrowing. “Are you ashamed?”
“I… not exactly. I never really considered that I had anything to be ashamed of, but after being around him and seeing what he’s gone through. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe this isn’t the right thing to be doing.”
The Asian cupped his lover’s cheek. “Hey, it’s good money and fun, but it isn’t the only job out there. If you want out, that’s fine with me.”
Zechs frowned. “I’m staying if you are. We’re a team and I’m not letting anyone else touch you.”
A knock came on the door. “Yuy, Merquise, you’re up in ten.”
“Thanks,” Heero called, eyes never leaving his lover’s. “Is that what this is really about? You’re jealous?”
“No, I’m not jealous. I’m outgrowing the thrill of this job. I just don’t want anyone else looking at you. I don’t want anyone else getting their hands on you. You’re mine, Heero.”
His eyes widened and for the first time in years, a slight blush came to his cheeks. He wet his lips and swallowed. “Okay. We’ll talk about it.”
Zechs smiled and kissed him softly. “We better get going.”
