He's getting this permanent crease just between his brows from how much I'm frustrating him. I guess I am being a bit bullish about it. I'm not trying to be, but this is important to me. I want a child so bad it makes my chest hurt. I want something tangible of our love. Something that's a part of each of us that will carry on after we're gone.
******
“What about this one?”
Quatre sighed. “Nose is too big.”
Heero dropped the photo and rubbed his face. “Quatre, are you really trying with this?”
“I am. It's just that none of these women will work. What if our child gets one of their prominent features?”
“Chavez said they manipulate the genes.”
He sighed again and leaned against the headboard. “We don't know any of them. What if they changed their minds and decided to keep the baby?”
Heero looked to Quatre's downcast face. “Hey, we've only been looking into this for a couple of weeks. There's no reason to get upset. Okay? We'll find someone.”
He gave his lover a wan smile. “You're right. I'm sorry. It's just...”
“What?”
“I want to make sure we have a baby before we're thirty.”
Heero gazed at him curiously for a moment. “Why thirty?”
“Because I don't want to be too old to play with our grandchildren.”
Sapphire eyes widened. “Uh... I think you're skipping a little far ahead, Quatre. Anyway, we have four years before we're thirty. I'm pretty sure we can find a surrogate mother before then. Okay?”
The blond nodded. “I know. I just wish one of us could have carried a child.”
Heero sighed. “I know. I wish I could have done it for you. I'm sorry.”
He shook his head slowly and they sat for a moment in silence. “I killed her, Heero.”
“What?”
He closed his eyes. “My mother. If she hadn't-”
“She knew the risk,” Heero said gently. “She did it because she wanted to bear her child. It isn't your fault.”
He dropped his eyes to the pile of pictures on the bed. “Then why can't I take that risk? There's a chance-”
“A small... very small one. Don't ask me to risk a life without you when a surrogate mother can give us a child.”
He released a breath. “All right.”
Heero gathered up the photos. “It's late. Let's get some sleep.”
Quatre nodded and helped Heero clean off the bed before pulling his lover to his chest. Within minutes, Heero was asleep. It took much longer for the blond to fall asleep, and it felt as if he'd just closed his eyes when they were awakened a little before nine the next morning by Marty with a tray holding their breakfast.
After eating, Heero grabbed the little bottle that had been brought up with their meal and a syringe from the nightstand drawer. He stuck the needle into the bottle and pulled back on the syringe. Quatre watched from his perch against the headboard, shivering as his lover shoved the needle into his thigh.
“I don't see how you can do that?”
Heero chuckled. “I once set my own broken leg,” he reminded the blond. “Besides, what's one needle prick if it gives me a better life?”
Quatre stretched his arms over his head. “What time is it?”
“Near ten.”
“Hm.” He plucked his cup of coffee off the tray. “Do we have any plans for the day?”
Heero dropped the needle in the sharps container and settled back on the bed. “No. Is there anything you want to do?”
“Maybe we could go over to Ronnie's and Trowa's. I wouldn't mind playing with Tami.”
Heero sighed. “Why don't we do something non-baby related.”
“Like what?”
He pulled the cup from Quatre's hand and set it back on the tray before straddling the blond's hips. “Like spending the day in bed,” he answered, dropping a kiss to his lover's lips.
Quatre smiled softly. “Highly inappropriate.”
Heero nibbled at his neck. “I don't recall ever caring much about being appropriate.”
His soft laugh turned into a moan as Heero slid a hand between them to coax his length into hardening. The phone rang and Heero leaned heavily into Quatre as he reached for it. “Hello.”
“Hi, Heero. How are you this morning?”
“Good, Ronnie, and you?”
Quatre snorted, wondering if the girl had some sort of sixth sense that let her know when her gay friends were in the middle of something.
“Doing great. Duo and Wufei are leaving for L2 in a couple of days, so I was wondering if y'all wanted to get together before they left.”
He raised an eyebrow. “They won't be gone that long.”
“Aw, come on. It's been a while since we all got together.”
Heero looked down to Quatre. “Ronnie wants to have a party tonight.”
“Fine with me.” Quatre gasped softly as Heero squeezed the length still in his hand.
“Are you guys still in bed?”
“Yeah.”
She hummed softly. “Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Winner/Yuy residence.”
“What exactly does your husband think about you ogling other men?”
“He doesn't mind since you're all gay.”
Heero snorted. “What time do you want us there?”
“Around five.”
“All right. We'll see you then.” He hung up and returned his full attention to his lover, whose eyes had darkened and breath quickened due to Heero's hand stroking him. He grabbed the lube from the nightstand and slid down Quatre's body, lapping at the tip of his erection before taking the head into his mouth.
As the blond's lust increased, Heero coated his fingers with lube and reached back to stretch himself. Quatre groaned softly at the sight. They had tried Quatre as bottom and it had been okay, but neither had enjoyed it as much as their original position.
The mouth left him and a slick hand replaced it. “That was quick. How many fingers did you use?” he asked, knowing his lover's tendency to rush things.
“Three,” he answered shortly before pressing his lips to Quatre's.
The blond opened his lips in invitation and found his mouth instantly plundered by an incessant tongue. He lost himself in the passionate kiss until he was suddenly swallowed whole by tight heat. Both broke the kiss, Heero to gasp loudly while Quatre hissed through his teeth.
“Are you all right?”
Heero clenched his hands on Quatre's shoulders. “Never better.”
“One of these days you're going to hurt yourself.”
“That's okay.” He kissed the corner of Quatre's mouth. “I have an amazing caretaker.” He kissed the other corner. “If it weren't for him,” he raised up slowly, “I wouldn't be here.” He dropped back down.
Quatre cupped his hand to the back of Heero's neck and crashed their lips together, tongues warring for dominance. He leaned forward and pushed Heero to his back.
“Love you,” he breathed as he raised up and pushed Heero's legs toward his chest by the knees, spreading them wide.
Heero couldn't return the sentiment as Quatre slammed into him repeatedly. Not to say he was quiet. Grunts and gasps fell constantly from his lips. He clenched the sheets in his fists, tossing his head to the side.
Quatre's breath hitched as he watched the beautiful man beneath him. He had come so close to losing him. He'd watched his health fade and feared he'd never see him well again. But here he was, in full health and writhing beneath Quatre wantonly.
“Touch yourself for me, Heero.”
Sapphire eyes slit open and met cerulean. He released his tight hold on the sheets and slid his hand down his stomach to grip his erection.
Quatre wet his lips. “Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
Heero gripped himself tighter, a heady moan ripping from him as he came. Quatre continued pounding into him for several more thrusts before emptying his release inside his lover. He collapsed to Heero's chest, gasping for breath. After several minutes, a knock came to the door.
“Yes?”
“Sorry to bother you, sir,” Nancy said in an amused tone, “but the new hire is here.”
“Dang, I forgot.” He pulled out of Heero and sat up. “Show him the grounds and explain the duties required. Then take him to the parlor. I'll be down shortly.”
“Yes, sir.”
Quatre slid off the bed and disappeared into the bathroom. Heero rolled to his side, not bothered about the mess covering him. As far as he was concerned, it was just more proof he was alive. The phone rang again and he crawled to the head of the bed.
“Hello?”
“How's it going?”
“All right. Did Ronnie call you?”
“Yeah. Y'all gonna be there?”
“Yeah.”
Duo chuckled. “You just got some, didn't you?”
“She tell you that?”
“Nope. You have a touch of 'bedroom voice' going on... uh... you're done, aren't you?”
“Do you think I'd have answered if we weren't?”
“You apparently answered for Ronnie.”
He rolled to his stomach. “We hadn't really started yet. Did you call for any particular reason?”
“Oh yeah, I didn't get a chance to tell you yesterday. I got promoted. I'm now in charge of the 'Let's blow shit up' department.”
He smiled. “I know. Une asked for my opinion on a replacement for Wallace and I told her no one was better than you. I think she was already considering you anyway.”
“Thanks, Heero. See you tonight.”
He hung up and looked over as Quatre came out of the bathroom. The blond dressed quickly. “Who was on the phone?”
“Duo. Une gave him that promotion.”
“Good. Wallace is too far behind the times.” He dropped a kiss to the top of Heero's head. “I need to go see to the new employee.”
Heero rolled off the bed. “I'll be down after I shower.”
“All right.” Quatre moved down to the parlor. A man appearing to be in his mid-twenties sat waiting. He stood, with a slight blush and extended his hand. “Lance Mitchell?” Quatre asked.
“Y-yes.”
“Have a seat. Did Nancy show you what the job would entail?”
The man nodded. “It shouldn't be a problem. You have a beautiful home, Mr. Winner. The gardens are particularly amazing.”
He tipped his head. “Thank you. Our present grounds keeper will be retiring at the end of the month. Would you be able to start then?”
“Yes.”
As they were finishing discussing services and wages, Heero came into the room and sat on the sofa next to Quatre.
“Lance, this is my partner and house mate, Heero Yuy.”
The man's face reddened again as he extended his hand. “It's nice to meet you.”
Heero nodded, a little confused by the man's blush. “Same to you.” He looked to Quatre who was frowning slightly.
“Lance, is everything okay?”
“Oh... um... y-yes. I'm sorry... I just...” His blush deepened.
Cerulean eyes suddenly widened. “How long were you waiting?”
“About thirty minutes,” he admitted.
“Oh dear.” It was Quatre's turn to blush, but, for some reason, Heero found the situation hilarious. “What are you laughing for? You're the one he heard.”
Heero shrugged. “It's an interesting way to start a job interview.”
Lance tilted his head slightly, a small smile coming to his face. “I must say, it was a first.”
“It doesn't bother you?” Quatre asked.
Lance frowned. “Why should it?”
“Some people are uncomfortable working with homosexuals. I had some staff quit when they found out I was gay.”
Lance raised an eyebrow. “My lover would be terribly put out if I had an issue with gays.”
Quatre smiled. “Oh, I see. Been together long?”
He grinned and pulled out his wallet to show them a picture of himself with his boyfriend. “I guess you could say we're high school sweethearts. At least, that's how he puts it.”
Heero smirked. “So you like the pretty and femme ones, huh?”
Lance shrugged. “Yeah. He's a tiger, though. I know the top should be the lead in the relationship, but Dustin pretty much calls all the shots.”
Quatre cut his eyes to Heero. “I know what you mean.”
“How long have you two been together?”
“We've been friends for years, but only lovers for over a year,” Quatre answered.
“What brought you together, if you don't mind my asking?”
They shared a look, Quatre gripping Heero's hand before the Japanese man answered. “I was diagnosed with Leukemia.”
Lance's eyes widened. “Are you all right now?”
He nodded. “I've been in remission for seven months.”
He smiled. “Good for you.”
“Thank you.”
Lance looked to Quatre. “So, do I get the job?”
He smiled. “Yes. I think you'll work out just fine.”
The three stood and shook hands before Nancy saw the new hire to the door. Quatre looked to Heero.
“Well, that was embarrassing.”
Heero hugged his lover. “It could have been worse. He could have been straight and hated gays.”
Quatre nodded. “Yeah. That would have been worse.” He tilted Heero's chin up and kissed him softly. “Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
They pulled apart and Quatre went to the kitchen. “Marty, we'll be having dinner out tonight and we can fend for ourselves for lunch. Why don't you take the rest of the day off?”
The cook looked over from where he was loading the dishwasher. “If you're sure.”
He nodded. “Yes. It's fine.”
******
Wufei and Duo stared at the wall in silence for five minutes. The braided man shook his head. “It's boring.”
“It's calming,” Wufei countered.
“It lacks imagination.”
He looked to his lover with a raised eyebrow. “It's paint, Duo.” He pointed to the second streak on the bathroom wall. “And that would give me a headache.”
Duo pursed his lips as he gazed at the two different colors on the wall. One was a slate gray and the other a bright teal. “It isn't going to give you a headache.”
“It's a childish color.”
Duo frowned. “It is not. Bathrooms should be bright, especially when they're this small and don't have any windows.”
Wufei went back into the bedroom and returned with another sample can of paint. “Let's try this one.”
He scrunched his nose. “But, Fei...”
“What?”
“It's yellow.”
“Yes, your point?”
Duo sighed as he watched the soft yellow being smeared on the wall. Wufei stepped back and they stared again. Duo snorted a laugh.
“What?”
He looked to his lover. “It's like watching paint dry.”
Wufei snorted at the clichéd metaphor that wasn't one in this case. He set the can down. “I don't think we're going to decide today. We should get ready for the party.”
Duo glanced to his watch. “Yikes. I didn't realize it was getting so late.” They moved into the bedroom to change clothes and Wufei spotted Duo's phone charger beneath the bed. He swiped it up and set it on top of the braided man's suitcase before bending over to slip into his pants. A slap fell to his ass.
“Hey!”
“What?” Duo gazed at him, blinking innocently.
He grunted as he zipped his pants up. “Like anyone would every believe that face.”
“Aw, you know you love me.”
He smiled softly. “That I do.”
******
“Oh no you don't.” Trowa scooped the rolling baby up into his arms and set her in his lap. “You'll roll right off the blanket.”
Ronnie laughed softly, shaking her head. “The carpet is clean, you know.”
He looked over his shoulder to his wife. “Not as clean as the blanket.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don't you know it's good for kids to get a little dirty?”
He looked back down to their daughter. “Do you hear that, Tami? Mommy wants you to get sick.”
A muffled snicker came from the sofa and he arched an eyebrow as he looked up. “Something you wanted to say?”
Heero shook his head, an innocent expression on his face. “I'll just never get used to you cooing.”
“I think it's cute.”
He smirked to his lover. “You would.”
Trowa looked back to his six month old daughter. He bounced her slightly, smiling as a toothless grin came to her lips.
Quatre laughed and leaned over, plucking the little girl from her daddy's arms. “You want to see Uncle Quatre, don't you?”
She cooed and allowed the blond to snuggle her to his chest, promptly putting her thumb between her lips. Ronnie sighed. “We've got to break her of that. She'll ruin the shape of her mouth.”
“She's only six months old. You have plenty of time to break her of it.” Quatre sat on the couch and turned the baby to face him, sitting her on his knees so he could bounce her. “Isn't that right, Tami?”
She blew a raspberry and he nodded, looking innocently to Ronnie. “See?”
She snorted and threw a dish towel over her shoulder before setting to chopping up vegetables for a salad. A knock came to the door and Trowa went to let Wufei and Duo in. “Running a little late, are we?”
Wufei flushed slightly and Duo grinned. “We would have been here on time if it hadn't been for someone teasing me.”
Wufei shot his lover a look. “I was not teasing you. I was getting dressed.”
“But you did it in a sexy way.”
Obsidian eyes rolled. “Not for a normal person. You're just a walking hormone.”
The timer went off on the oven. “Trowa, can you get that out for me?”
He nodded and moved into the kitchen. Heero and Quatre leaned over a bit to watch the two share a quick kiss before Trowa grabbed some pot holders and pulled the casserole dish from the over to set it on top of the stove. Quatre smiled and looked back to Tami.
“You have the sweetest parents, you know that?” He cut his eyes to Heero. “And we could be parents, too, you know?”
Heero sighed. “We discussed this Quatre.”
“But I think he was being overly cautious.”
Trowa, Ronnie, Duo, and Wufei looked to them.
“Overly cautious about what?” she asked.
Quatre stood, holding the baby to his hip. “Well, we went to talk to Dr. Chavez.”
Duo's eyes widened. “You're seriously considering that?”
“We tentatively talked about it,” Heero said as he stood and they all moved to the kitchen area of the apartment. “I agreed to go and see him.” He looked to Quatre. “But the operation is risky even in a healthy person. He flat out said I couldn't have it. And that it would be high risk on Quatre.”
Trowa frowned, looking to the blond who was staring down at Tami. “Why would it be high risk?”
“It isn't,” the blond said.
Heero sighed. “You know about his empathy?” The others nodded. “Chavez said that empaths were four times as likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth. The strain on the body sends the empathy into over time and most don't live through it. Which is what happened to Quatre's mother.”
“We don't know that for sure,” Quatre said sadly.
“Quatre, your sisters confirmed it.”
Ronnie gazed at the blond. He'd rapidly become attached to Tami, falling into his role as adoptive uncle easily and with glee. He was wonderful with her and she knew he'd make a great father if he was given the chance. It was obvious he wanted a child very badly. But he wanted one of his own. One that was a part of him.
“Why not get a surrogate?”
Quatre shook his head slowly. “I don't know about having some woman we don't know carrying our child. It would just be weird. And what if she changed her mind or wanted rights to the baby?”
Heero sighed. They'd run in circles with the discussion. He hated how much it hurt his lover, but it seemed adoption was their only choice. “Quatre-”
“I could do it.”
Five sets of eyes shot to the strawberry blond. “What?”
Trowa cleared his throat, really not sure what he thought about the idea of his wife carrying someone else's baby, even if they were dear friends. She took one look at his face and rolled her eyes. “Oh come on, it's not like I'd have to have sex with them.”
“I know, but...” He looked to Quatre and Heero. The blond looked like he was fighting back hope while Heero's face was impassive. “Maybe you and I should discuss it before we throw it out there. Okay?”
Quatre deflated a little and Heero rubbed his shoulder, leaning over to whisper in his ear. “He's right, Quatre.”
He nodded. “I know.”
Tami reached up and put her hand to Quatre's cheek as if she realized one of her uncles was unhappy and wanted to comfort him. Heero smiled softly and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “You're a sweet thing, Tami.”
Trowa stared at the couple and then looked to Ronnie. He groaned softly. “All right.”
Two different shades of blue shot toward him. “What?” Heero asked.
“If Ronnie wants to do this and you guys are okay with that, then I am, too.”
Ronnie squealed and raised up on her toes to kiss him. Quatre looked to Heero with a hopeful expression in his eyes. Ronnie moved to hug Quatre as Heero and Trowa exchanged glances.
“Are you sure?” Heero mouthed.
He offered a small smile and nodded. The smile that lit up Heero's face then sealed the deal for Trowa. After all the Asian had been through, he more than deserved to have some of his seemingly impossible hopes come true. He pulled his eyes from Heero as he found Quatre pulling him into a hug. It somewhat surprised Trowa. Ever since Quatre had learned about the... instance between himself and Heero, he knew the blond wasn't quite as... happy with him as he once had been.
“Thank you, Trowa.”
“You're welcome. Just let us know all the details.”
“We will.” He looked to Duo as the braided man stole Tami from his arms. “Hey!”
“What? We're leaving in three days and I won't get to see her for forever.”
Wufei rolled his eyes. “For two weeks.”
“Details, details, and technicalities.”
“Are you excited about your trip?” Ronnie asked.
Duo scrunched his nose. “Kinda and kinda not. For one thing, I have to give some speeches.” He calmly elbowed Heero in his side when the Japanese man snorted a laugh. “And Une is making Fei come back earlier just because she has new recruits coming in.”
Wufei sighed. “I'm sorry. I tried to get out of it.”
He sat on the sofa, bouncing Tami on his knees. “I know.” He smiled softly as Tami laughed. “You are so sweet. How the hell did you come from Ronnie and Tro?” He ducked the incoming dishtowel.
