Chapter
19
She looked outside through
the window of her bedroom. The weather had changed a lot since she last set
foot outside. In the beginning the trees threw their fallow leaves down on the
world, and some time after that the heavens let their crystal-white snowflakes
whirl down. But now the air was filled again with the merry singing of the
birds and the bright rays of the sun. Had nine
months already passed?
Through her open window, a
pleasant warmth and a pungent, yet sweet scent hovered inside. The scent of a midsummer evening. For some reason, her father had
always advised her to stay inside. Said it was bad for her wounds. Who cared? They had healed
enough by now. And her father wasn’t home, so who would stop her? No, enough of
this. This time she was determined. She'd wanted to take a walk for days, weeks. It wasn’t
like her to stay inside with weather
like this. And taking a walk was what she was going to do, right now.
As she stepped outside, she
took a deep breath, filling her lungs with oxygen. Although it was indeed very warm, still she dressed herself in a long-sleeved shirt and gloves,
though they were made from a very light
material. She started walking, nowhere in particular in fact. Her steps brought her in the
direction of Heero’s house. As she approached
his house so she could see something glittering
in the sun. Silver sparkles amidst the grass of the verge. Her curiosity
enticed her to kneel down and take a closer look at it.
“Why, that’s… a rosary,” she
said softly, picking up the piece of jewellery and examining it intently. “No,
it couldn’t be… Duo’s rosary? But it is, I recognize it. How in the world did
that end up here?” A bit dazzled from her find, she got back up. Duo’s rosary.
The rosary from Duo. Her Duo. Oh, that Duo. “Flirtatious scumbag” as they
called him.
In spite of that, she knew he loved her. And her alone. Such a shame
he had to die.
“I wonder what has become of
the house?” she thought out loud. “Would someone
have bought the building site and rebuilt it?”
In fact, why not take a look at it now she was out of the house? And so she
continued on her way, to their burnt down and
ruined love-nest.
*
Duo sat back in his chair,
upper body naked, wet cloth being rubbed over his chest. He looked around.
Where did his cat go? Had he already fed her tonight? She was nowhere to be seen,
must be out on a spree again. He’d have to be careful that she didn't get pregnant, his tigress. He really should start feeding her the pill. Yes, the
pill. For cats. Quatre had told him about it.
That guy had three or four cats, maybe five by now. Persians of course. Thoroughbreds. 'One pill a week, crush it and sprinkle it over her
food,' he had told him.
“Purrr,” the sound came from the top of the cabinet. So that's where she was. Not hungry. Lazy beast.
“There you go,” Heidi’s
merry voice pulled him out of his reverie. “All better.”
“Thanks honey,” Duo said. “Would
you give me back my rosary, then I’ll get another shirt.”
“I don’t have your rosary,”
she said.
Local bomb alert. “What do you mean, you don’t have my rosary? Didn’t you
take it off to nurse my chest then?”
“No, I didn’t. I thought you'd taken it off yourself.”
“Then where is it?” Duo
panicked, jumping upright and searching the carpet.
“I don’t know. But you still
had it when we left the office this evening.”
His eyes still scanned the carpet, he thought about Solo. Take good care of it, boy, he had said. Where that rosary is, I’ll be. Always wear
it on your heart. He had to find it. “That dog,” he suddenly said. “Heero’s
dog. When he attacked me, he must’ve ripped that away as well. I have to go
back.”
“No, you shouldn’t. Heero
wouldn’t like it if you hung around his house again.”
“But you know how much I’m
attached to it,” he argued.
“I’ll go,” she said. ”You’d
better rest a bit now.”
And before he could say
another word, she had dashed out of his house and had taken the car towards
Heero’s house.
*
Funny. Or spooky was more the word she should use. The house had been
rebuilt alright. Rebuilt in exactly the same fashion as it used to be, as if it
hadn’t burnt down at all.
For several minutes
she stood there, just gazing and wondering. Who had bought the house? How could it look exactly the same as it
used to? Same kind of bricks, same layout to the
garden, same front door.
A voice crashed through her
train of thoughts. Painful cursing, and then something about a dog and
declawing him personally. For a moment she thought her memories had caught up
with reality, for it was a hauntingly familiar voice.
Cautiously she inched
towards the door and rang the bell. With a racing heart she waited until the
door opened, and when it did, all the happiness
and joy she could’ve felt in a whole lifetime flooded
into her very being. There, in the open doorway, stood Duo Maxwell, not dead, but more
alive than ever.
“Heidi, you’re back already.
Forgot your key again?” Duo said, not really paying attention to who was
actually standing in front of him. “Come on in.”
A bit bewildered, she let
herself being pulled inside, the rosary still hidden in her clenched fist.
“So, have you found it?” he
asked, dragging her with him to the living room. No answer. He turned around
again, only to see that she was looking at him
awkwardly. “Heidi? What’s wrong? Why are you so quiet? You haven’t said a word
since coming inside, that’s not like you. And
for the love of God, why are you wearing gloves?!” he exclaimed, noticing them
for the first time. “It’s sweltering outside!”
Oh, active as ever. Hasn’t
change a bit. “Duo,” the girl said softly. “I don’t know who Heidi is, but… I’m
not her.”
“What
do you mean, you’re not? You’re not Heidi? Then who on earth…?” He abruptly cut
his sentence off and his breath caught in his throat as he felt pretty much the
same as the girl had felt when he had opened the door just now.
“Duo, take a good look at
me,” she said.
“Hil… de? Hilde, is that
you??” he asked, still under the delusion that his eyes were deceiving him. “My
God, it really is you.” He examined her face from every angle, but it was her eyes that distinguished her more clearly from
Heidi. In a way, they were more mature, although they were both approximately
the same age. “C-come on in, have a seat. Wanna drink or
something?” he stammered.
“Funny you should ask me
that in my own house,” she smiled, sitting down on the couch and crossing her
one leg over the other.
“Yeah, well. I’m sorry…”
“But I’d like a glass of
water.”
He went to the kitchen to
fetch the glass of water and a cola for himself.
On his way back he noticed his cat, still high up
on the cabinet, lazily stretching out her head for a caress. Sorry, predator. Hands full. “Ginger.” No! Minna! How many times do I still have to
tell you.
“Here you are.”
“Thank you,” she said.
The incredulousness was back
in his eyes, and in his thoughts he was back in the hospital. Beside his bed was the man who had called him a
coward, had blamed him that Hilde had died. She
hadn’t died. She was sitting right here. In this room, with him. “Now tell me,”
he said. “What’s the story? I thought you were dead.”
She gave an understanding
nod with her head. “The fire,” she said softly. “Well, it all started with the
TV acting weird. There came little sparks from the wires, so I tried to call
you, but…”
“I know, I’ve heard all that
on the voice mail of my cell phone. And I tried to get here as soon as I could,
but when I tried to get you out of here, one of
the neighbors pulled me back. I’m so sorry, Hilde. It really was my fault. I
said I would switch the sound back on, but I simply forgot. God, I’m so sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize
like that. I should’ve called my father sooner, but no, first I had to try five
times to get you. My father picked up the first
time. Fortunately, he arrived just in time, and got
me out of the house right before the roof collapsed.
Don’t ask me how.”
“Oh?” Duo said surprised. “And
nobody saw you?”
“I don’t know. I had already
lost consciousness. Maybe somewhere at the back.”
“I see,” Duo nodded
pondering. “But… It’s been nine months. Why have you never contacted me?”
“I tried to stay inside the
house as much as possible. My hands and the most
part of my arms were covered with heavy burns because I used them to protect my
face. They weren't allowed to be in any
sunlight. And it’s not really all that practical
to walk with gloves all the time.
“Oh, so that explains the
gloves and the long-sleeved shirt.”
“Yes, it does.”
“And how long did you have
to stay in the hospital?”
“I didn’t. My father had
arranged nurses to tend to me at home. Besides,
I thought you were dead too.”
“What?!” Oops, his cola
almost flew to the floor. “You thought I was dead? What… what made you think that?!”
“Well, that’s what my dad
told me; that you
had died in the fire while you were trying to save me, but that your body was
nowhere to be found.”
“But… Why did he tell you
that?”
“He never thought you worthy
of me. I had to hear it a lot that you weren’t good enough for me, that I
deserved much better. And then I told him that I was proud of you because you
fought in a battle to obtain total peace, but he kept on saying that you were
just another one of those fire-eaters. It’s such a shame my mother’s dead. She
would’ve supported me.”
The scant
respect he still had for the man hereby completely
disappeared. A sickening conspiracy to pull the
two of them
apart. Duo was starting to question himself. First Doctor J, Heero’s so called
foster father, now Hilde’s father. Had everyone turned a bit crazy?
“I see,” he said, his voice
shivering with contained rage. Several scenarios played in his head, one a bit
more extreme than the other. As long as they stayed in his head there wasn’t a
chance of possible injury. Providing he stayed away from Hilde’s father as well.
Hilde almost found it funny
how he tried to keep himself under control. In any other circumstance she probably
would’ve burst out laughing.
“And that you were pregnant,
was that a lie as well?”
She cast her eyes down and a
tear fell on her hand. “No, that’s the truth. But, there is no baby any more. I had a miscarriage.”
The “Purrr” that sounded again from the cabinet sounded loud in the
silence following her words. Yes, stretch again
you.
“I’m sorry,” Duo said
eventually. “Do you want to talk about it?”
She shook her head. “Maybe
later. Let’s talk about more pleasant things now.”
He kissed the tear away from
her hand and let her lean against him. “Okay, if you want to. What do you want
to talk about?”
“Are you seeing someone
right now?”
That question caught him off
guard and he pulled away from her. Oh, more pleasant things she called that. “Eh,
why do you want to know?” he stammered.
“Well, since you thought I
was dead, I figured you must’ve found yourself
another girlfriend, given the flirter that you are.”
“Right… Well, I… How shall I
put this?”
“Duo? Don’t you have another
girlfriend?”
“Eh… You know Heero, don’t
you?”
“Oh yeah, Heero Yuy. Friend
and colleague,” she smiled. “What about him?”
“Well ehm…” he said, feeling
all the more nervous with every second that went by, dying inside at the
thought of how she might react. “He, ehm… He has turned out to be a bit more
than a friend. A lot more… in fact.”
“Duo, do you mean you are
gay?!” she exclaimed.
“No, not quite…”
“Then what are you?!”
“Hilde,
I’m bisexual!”
She froze in whatever she
was doing and her eyes were about ready to pop out. “You like men *and* women??”
“Well, yeah. That’s about
it.”
“But… How did you find out?
I mean, you don’t turn into a bisexual just like that.”
“Well, you see, there’s this
girl. Heidi’s her name. She has helped me to discover those feelings for Heero.
Well, not discover, they have always been there,” he corrected himself. “But
Heidi and me, we can’t go to Heero right now, because…”
“Hold on! You and Heero
*and* that girl are together? Did I get that
right?”
Duo nodded his head and
Hilde’s state of appall only grew. “A threesome?” she whispered incredulously.
“Yeah, me, Heero and Heidi.
It’s quite fun, you know.”
“Now, I knew you were
capable of a lot, but this…”
The sound of a car and the
front door slamming shut. A rattling girlish voice followed. “Duo, please don’t
get angry with me, but I haven’t found your rosary. I’ve looked everywhere,”
they heard coming from the corridor. Probably there would’ve followed a whole
litany of how attached he was to it and how many memories it carried with it,
if it wasn’t for the girl who sat there on the
couch. “Duo, who’s that?” Heidi asked.
Bright smile to hide his
discomfort. “Heidi, remember that girlfriend I told you about? The one who
looked exactly like you? Well, that’s her,” he said,
a bit uncomfortable. “She’s still alive after all, but I’ll tell you all about that some other time.”
The two girls looked at each
other, their resemblance so great, it gave Duo the creeps. There in front of
him stood two women, equally as beautiful, both of them madly in love with him,
and he himself also in love with both of them. But he didn’t want to choose. If
he did that, he would break the heart of either Hilde or Heidi.
“Eh, can I propose
something?” he said carefully. “Hilde, why don’t you join us? I’m quite sure
Heero wouldn’t mind.”
“Oh, that’s such a great
idea!” Heidi cheered. “The four of us!”
“No!” Hilde yelled, disgusted, jumping up from the couch and pacing over
to Duo. “I don’t want this! Duo, if you still want to see me, then you’ll have
to make a choice! Either me, Heero or Heidi!”
Heidi sat down on the couch, determined to make her change
her mind. “Hilde, come sit next to me,” she
said, patting her hand on the free space next to her. But the girl seemed
pretty reluctant to obey someone she had just met and on top of that agreed
with such preposterous proposals.
“Sit!” Heidi barked,
suddenly with a stern look in her eyes. Hilde still threw a glance to Duo, and
he gave a nod with his head in return. Just
humor her.
Hilde went and sat down but didn’t look at Heidi. Her eyes roamed across the room. Same
wallpaper, same cabinet, same table. Even the couch they were sitting on was
the same.
“Hilde, are you listening to
me? It has taken me three fucking months to get those two in the same bed. Don’t
blow it.”
Oh, she called her by name. Well, look at her after all then. “But… Why?”
“Because anyone could see
those two are made for each other. Only no one had the guts to confront them.”
“And you did?”
“Girl, I’m pretty sure you
know as much as I do that Duo loves flirting. I was only there to make him stop
mourning you. The moment he was over you, he was unstoppable again, and Heero
was his most favorite and most willing target.”
The look in Hilde’s eyes was
still skeptical. Duo fucking guys. Duo gay. Not Duo. “It’s filthy. It’s sodomy,”
she said.
“It’s not sodomy,” Duo said.
“What I had to go through in my childhood, that was sodomy.”
“What
do you mean?” Hilde asked, confused. “I know you
had to sleep with girls, but that wasn’t painful for you, was it?”
Duo buried his face in his
hands and sighed. Now he was busy making confessions. “Not with girls.”
Hilde’s face paled. “With
boys?” she whispered unbelievingly.
“Boys, men, burly guys.
Monsters, the only kind of lubricant they used was the blood out of my torn
skin. They didn’t see my tears. Or didn’t want to see them. Or they did see
them and thought it was good. I was completely ruined. That, Hilde, that was
sodomy.”
Hilde moved and sat down next to her friend and put a
consoling, compassionate arm around him. “Why didn't you ever tell me?”
“I was afraid of how you
might’ve reacted. You hate homosexuals, I know you do. I was already afraid
when I told you about my life on the streets, and if you knew that as well,
then I was sure I could forget about us.”
“That’s nonsense,” she
soothed him. “Listen, I take back what I said. It’s not sodomy and it’s not
filthy. Heidi, I’m sorry. I’m a bit overwhelmed by all this.”
“I understand,” Heidi said,
taking Hilde’s hands in hers.
“Would you like to pay Heero
a visit? Together with us?” Duo suggested.
“Why?”
“To talk about this
situation. He too thinks you’re dead.”
“Duo, Heero’s gonna kill
you. You know you can’t…”
“Really, Heidi. Doctor J has
been bothering us more than enough by now. Tomorrow I’m paying him a visit and
that’s it. Hilde, what do you think?”
She wanted to say no. If she
were to say yes, she knew what would happen. She
would see a mutual love in Duo’s and Heero’s eyes, a love she couldn’t compete
against. On the other hand it would’ve been ridiculous to say no. Duo would
keep on trying until she said yes. “Alright,”
she sighed finally.
“Great,” Duo smiled.
“I’d better go home now.”
“You sure? It’s getting
late.”
“Father will be worried.”
“Phone is still standing on
its old place.”
She looked at the phone, as
if it would give her the consent she needed. “My father will be furious,” she
said, shaking her head. “Alright, I’ll stay. But only to sleep, nothing more.
And in the spare room.”
“Ooh, yay! It will be so
much fun!” Heidi cheered.
“Oh, by the way. I heard
Heidi talking about a rosary. Is this what you were looking for?” she said,
holding the necklace up.
“My rosary!” Duo cried. “How…
Where did you…”
“I wanted to take a walk and
I went past Heero’s house. It was lying there in the grass, just like that.
When I saw it, I recognized it. It was yours. I wanted to see our house again,
but then I heard your voice. I just couldn’t believe it. It was really your
voice.”
“Oh Hilde, I’m so glad to
have it back.” He gratefully took the rosary from her and hung it back around
his neck. There, Solo was back in his heart.
Hilde laughed. From her
place on the couch, she saw Heidi looking at her, her eyes floating somewhere
between innocence and absolute mischief.
“Heidi, I said “only to
sleep”. You can keep your threesomes to yourself.”
“I heard what you said,”
Heidi reassured her, quickly nodding her head. “Besides, Heero’s not here
anyway.”
“Yeah, now that you mention
it. Where is he?” Hilde asked, looking around. Heero this, Heero that, but no
Heero to be spotted.
Duo slumped down in a chair
and took a position that would be comfortable enough for at least a few hours.
“That’s a long story,” he
sighed.
*
Duo was gay! It still was
beyond her. And then that Heidi-girl he had hooked up with. Why don’t you join
us? That didn’t came from him. That came from her. The influence she had on
him. For a moment she’d had to revise her opinion about her though. After all,
she would be spending the night here so the least she could do was to try and
make it agreeable and shove her prejudices aside for a while. After Heero’s
impressive, sad story, they had made dinner together, had watched some
television, even had a pillow-fight and had managed to involve Duo in it,
albeit against his will. Until Heidi broached the Heero/Duo chapter again. How
utterly scandalous she already deemed the whole gay-fuss, she gladly made it
worse. Voyeurism. Why not watch them?
she said. I do it all the time. It turns
them on to know they’re being watched.
Oh
well, go right ahead, why not? Watch them, see with my own eyes how Duo cheats
on me with a man.
Why
not, Hilde? Duo had then said. Before you
agree with me on the fact that it’s not filthy and it’s no sodomy, you should
first know what it is you’re agreeing with. I don’t want you to agree with me
just to soothe your own conscience.
Soothe
my conscience? My conscience is a mess. My entire head is a mess. What is good,
what is wrong? I don’t know anymore. Is it wrong that Duo’s gay? Is it wrong
that he likes to be watched? Is it wrong that he does the things he likes and
is judged for that? Is it wrong that I am playing with the thought to just watch them like Heidi?
Duo gay. How was that
possible? Duo, he was so normal, so passionate, so not-like-that, so… perfect.
But ever since he had met that Heidi, he had turned into a pervert, just like
her. And a fag, although he surely didn’t behave that way. She was disgusted by them,
always had been. Even though Duo was gay, she
still found them not normal, another race. But she could never be disgusted with Duo,
not him, even if he was a fag. Would it really be so revolting as she thought,
to watch him and Heero? Duo and Heero, two cute, nay (understatement of the
century), adorable guys. Kissing, French kissing, caressing?
Duo gay. Duo and Heero. She
tried to imagine it. Heero’s hand roving over Duo’s chest, pausing to fondle a
nipple, Duo moaning, the naughty hand gliding further, until his skillful
fingers slipped between his smooth thighs.
“No!” she said out loud,
turning over in her bed. Close your eyes, block the thought. You’re not letting them convince
you, she hammered into her head. But she knew she would get convinced. Her
fear was slowly melting away, her sense for decency crumbled. Again she saw
them in front of her eyes. Duo, on hands and
knees this time. Heero sat behind him, bent over him, and was giving him gentle
kisses in his neck and on his hair. Again, that stubborn hand sneaked to the
same place. Duo’s head shot upright. Destination successfully reached. Such pleasure
on his face.
Oh, it hurt. She realized
she had lost Duo for good now. No, not really for good. He wasn’t dead, like
her father had always told her. She would still see him. And she wouldn’t be
angry with him. She understood his situation. He had thought her to be dead and
had continued his life, just like she had expected. With Heero. That was how it
was. She couldn’t force him to fall in love with her again. Heero was a good
guy. He would never hurt him.
But she was straying. Would
she, or would she not watch them?
Why
not? she heard Duo’s question
again.
Yeah, why not? She was
asking herself that very same question. What was wrong with it, what did she
have to be afraid of? Of what people might say? How would they ever find out?
Who would meddle in her personal life? Why refrain from what feels good? Let
that little devil out. Just for once.
Yes, once. Tomorrow.
Tomorrow she would watch Duo and Heero. And her disgust for homosexuals would
disappear just like that with the snap of a
finger. And now? Now she would tell Duo that tomorrow she would watch him and
Heero.
She heard moaning when she
stood in front of their door. Oh yeah, she almost forgot. Duo didn’t say he was
gay, that she had said herself. He had said he was bisexual. And Heidi had done
everything in her power to make her see she wouldn’t mind a threesome with her.
In fact, she had kind of invited her herself. Hey, if you feel like it, you know where to find us. Or to say it
in Duo’s subtle words: It’s like watching
a good porn movie, but only with people you know.
She didn’t feel like it. She
just wanted to say something.
She knocked.
“Come in!” she heard after a
little pause. Heidi again.
She pushed the door open and
entered. It felt weird, to say the least, to see him lying there with the
double of herself underneath him. It felt like entering a sacred realm, a
forbidden place, the bedroom of a king while he’s making love to his queen. And
then to think this once used to be her very own bedroom, that it was her who
was lying there.
Duo approached her and stood in front of her in all his naked glory. “Hilde?”
he asked.
She cast her eyes down. Her
fingers fumbled nervously with the hem of a borrowed shirt, which had to serve
as a nightgown. “I’ll do it,” she said. “When we
go to Heero's tomorrow, I’ll watch you.”
Duo frowned. “You will?”
“Yes.” She made to turn and
leave the room.
“You’re not staying?”
“No.” But she did stay.
~*~*~*~
All that time, all Heero
could do was dream. He dreamt Duo was with him.
That they fell, kissing,
onto the bed. That they were watching a movie a tad to sappy and fell asleep on
the couch. That they sprayed each other with water
in the bathroom; soaking
everything until it was almost an ocean in
there. One day, he dreamt that he was in his office. His desk had magically
disappeared, and had been replaced by a bed,
made up with satin sheets, laden with soft
pillows and waiting to be used. He blinked a few times, as he looked a little
better, he could see something else amidst the multicolored, soft-hued
cushions: a long, auburn braid, a golden gleam shining through the different
segments. The pillows moved and the tresses
glided along them. It belonged to a head, a beautiful head he recognized as
that of his beloved Duo. He sat upright on the
bed, his nakedness shielded by the pillows and the sleek sheets and stretched
his arm out to Heero, beckoning him to join him.
“Come,” he said softly.
He started walking, and as
he did, he noticed a sudden coolness gliding along his body. If he had been
like that all the time, he didn’t know, but by the time he got to the bed, his
clothes were entirely gone, vanished into thin air;
or just hadn’t been there at all. As he kneeled down, he felt no fear for
whatever he should’ve been afraid of. He sat down beside Duo, removed the elastic of his lover’s braid and
unraveled his silken hair to reveal a
dark-golden mass. He wanted to tell him how much he loved him, over and over
again, a thousand times, and still it wouldn’t be enough. But somehow, those words coming straight
from his heart, kept sticking somewhere in his throat. Instead, he could only
look, let Duo take advantage of that open mouth to kiss him. He easily gave Duo the upper hand and didn’t fight back in the ridiculous battle for dominance as he was gently pushed
down on the mattress, lips still melded
together. He felt no desire to show his skills, the experience he had, or
thought he had, no need to impress or show off. Just to let Duo do as he
pleased. He knew Duo was okay with that, he saw it in his eyes as he pulled
away to look at him. Just to look, to take his beauty in through his eyes and
forever remember. During all that time, Heero
waited patiently for Duo to make his first move; and awaited to see
what that first move would be. So many possibilities, so many things that could
arouse him, Duo just had to pick one. What would it be? Following his
collarbone with his tongue and lips, nibbling against his jaw, or softly biting
his ear? Kissing the palm of his hand and moving further along his arm, tickling
on his belly? A hundred possibilities, but he choose only to caress him. Sweet,
loving strokes with his fingers, soft, very soft. Exploring the skin as if it were the very first time; feeling his muscles,
his chest, his belly, while all the time his mouth kept on spilling
superlatives of how handsome he was and how much he loved him.
Some kind of moisture
trickled down Heero’s temples. Hey, they were
tears. Also his heart felt different. Was it
happiness, emotion, grief, fear? He couldn’t identify it, no matter how hard he
tried. He only knew that there must’ve been a reason for that sudden change,
only he didn’t know what that reason was.
Something was pressing him, flustering him, and he knew that if he still wanted
to make love, he had to do it now. They couldn’t delay much longer, though Duo
didn’t seem to feel what he felt; and hadn’t
noticed his tears yet either.
“Duo,” he said, his voice
shaking heavily.
Duo looked up to his face
and instantly bowed over him in sincere worry. “What’s wrong? Why are you
crying?” he asked, wiping the tears away.
“There is something. I can
feel something,” Heero said. “Duo, you must make love to me now. Don’t wait any
longer.”
“But… I don’t understand,
Heero. What is it that you feel? And why are you so hasty all of a sudden?”
The tight
feeling in Heero’s chest kept on growing, until it almost felt like his heart
would burst. “Duo, now!” he said urgently, shaking Duo’s shoulders. “Now, Duo!
Do it now!”
The scraping of a metal key
sounded against the lock, and together with that sound, everything came back to
Heero. His heart seemed to explode with bottomless, endless fear; nothing but fear.
“Duo? Does Heidi have a key
of the office too?” he asked.
“No.” Duo slowly turned his
head in the direction of the door. A horrible realization. Doctor J. “Shit.”

While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error. The AFF system includes a rigorous and complex abuse control system in order to prevent improper use of the AFF service, and we hope that its deployment indicates a good-faith effort to eliminate any illegal material on the site in a fair and unbiased manner. This abuse control system is run in accordance with the strict guidelines specified above.
