When Vegeta arrived at his destination, he saw his father pacing the candle-lit room. Lord Hokoru stopped once he saw his son arrive. “Took you long enough! I was beginning to think you weren’t going to show!” He responded in a harsh tone and looked around for another person. “Well, where is he?”
“We need the doctor.” Vegeta said urgently, ignoring his father’s questions and concerns as he waited for him to understand the urgency of the situation.
Lord Hokoru looked at him in confusion. “Why?”
Vegeta growled. “He’s injured! We need the doctor! He’s in my room.”
His father finally grasped the reason and nodded. “Right. Well, let’s hurry.”
They quickly left the room and down a few halls to reach the family doctors’ living quarters. “It should be safe. He shouldn’t know anything about Kakarot or him being a wanted man.” Lord Hokoru explained as Vegeta nodded and they reached the doctors’ door. They didn’t bother knocking as they barged in, immediately waking the man up. “Doc, you’re needed up in Vegeta’s room.” The doctor seemed confused as he glanced at Vegeta, then to his Lord. “It’ll all make sense once you get up there. Now, gather your things and move!” Lord Hokoru barked as the doctor jumped out of bed at the order and quickly gathered his supplies and followed his Lord and young Master out of the room.
Once they got there, Kakarot laid shivering on the floor as he continued to lose blood. Both the doctor and Lord Hokoru paused as they took in the sight of the dying stranger. The doctor was confused in who this strange man was and Lord Hokoru thought he was seeing a ghost. The boy looked like an exact copy of his father. “Don’t just stand there! Help me!” Vegeta yelled at the two men staring at the dying man as he tried to bring him to his bed.
Lord Hokoru and the doctor snapped out of their thoughts and immediately obliged. Once Kakarot laid flat on his back on the comfy bed, they removed the dirty cloak and any other clothing he had on him. Vegeta gasped at seeing the many cuts that adorned his love’s smooth skin and had to look away from the gory sight before him. Lord Hokoru simply stared at the boy while the doctor set to work by cleaning the cuts and stitching them back together. Kakarot didn’t make much noise as he was pretty much unconscious, but the outward signs were plain to see that he was in agony. “Excuse me, sirs, but I need someone to keep his body temperature down. He’s burning up and if it keeps up like this, he’ll surely die.” The doctor said in a monotone voice.
Vegeta pulled it together and looked around for a bowl to fill with water and grabbed a piece of cloth. He set the bowel by the bed and dipped the cloth in cool water, then wrung it out and damped the cloth on Kakarot’s sweaty, warm skin. He tried not to look at his wounds or the ones being tended to as he searched for his hand and clenched it in his own. “Hang on, Kakarot. You’ll be alright, you’ll pull through. Just hang on.” He said in a pleading whisper as he ran the cloth over his love’s forehead and neck.
“Try and get him to drink some water.” The doctor suggested as he pierced the needle through wounded flesh and pulled it together.
Vegeta cringed as he glanced at the doctor’s work and proceeded to do what he suggested. He took the bowl and tipped it against Kakarot’s dry lips. “Here, Kakarot. Drink. It will make you feel better.” Vegeta said quietly and swallowed, trying to hide the tears that threatened to make their way down his cheeks and into his voice. He tipped the bowl more and watched the water pour into his lover’s mouth and waited for him to swallow. He breathed a sigh of relief when Kakarot swallowed the cool liquid in his mouth and proceeded to pour in some more. Kakarot swallowed a few more times before relaxing into the pillows below his back and head. Vegeta smiled softly in hope as he carefully dragged the cloth across his skin again.
Lord Hokoru watched the display and noticed the worried and hopeful expression on his son’s face. He was in love with the boy, he could tell. He couldn’t help but smile at the scene. He knew it. He knew that they were meant for each other. As the doctor finished up, he couldn’t help but wonder who this strange boy was that his Lord and Master made him tend to. Of course, he couldn’t help but let his curiosity get to him, but he wasn’t stupid enough to ask. If his Lord and Master wanted him to know who he was, then they would tell him. It wasn’t any of his business. He cleaned up the last of the mess that he left behind and added medicine to the healing wounds, then bandaged them. The boy seemed better now that he was finished. He rinsed off his hands and decided to bring some calming news to his young Master. “He should be better in two weeks if you keep a close eye on him and tend to him every now and then and let him rest. I’ll check on him every day to see how his wounds are healing. Call for me if there is anything else you need, sires.” He bowed. “Have a good evening.”
Vegeta nodded, not looking at the doctor, and Lord Hokoru nodded and turned his attention back to Kakarot as the doctor left. Vegeta ran his fingers through Kakarot’s damp hair and continued to run the cloth over his head, neck, and chest, being careful of his wounds of course. Lord Hokoru took a few steps closer to the bed and crossed his arms. “What happened to him?”
Vegeta frowned at the question, but didn’t turn his attention away from the sleeping man in front of him. “He was attacked by Akuto’s assassins. They mangled him…and I wasn’t there to help him.” His breath hitched as the truth was said aloud and the misery set in.
His father’s expression morphed into a similar mask as his own, as if knowing what it’s like not being able to help someone he cared about when they needed it. “I see.” It pained him to see the son of his close friend suffer like this. They need to think of something and quick. “Well, how about we make a deal with the Doumei clan or…tell them lies about their great leader.” Lord Hokoru suggested
Vegeta scoffed. “Or tell them the truth.”
Lord Hokoru pondered on the statement. “They may not care. Either way, I’m sure they would know by now what their leader has done in the past or have been with him long enough to help him along.” Vegeta tried to calm his emotions as he tended to his lover, his eyes watered from the pain and sadness that the man in front of him has had to bear throughout his life. His father sighed. “I guess I should come up with some better ideas.”
Vegeta made a little sound that sounded like a soft chuckle, but it quickly left as soon as it came. “I should hope so.”
A few moments of silence passed before Lord Hokoru decided to leave his son alone to rest. “Well, it’s a shame to have to meet him like this. Perhaps…we’ll have better luck when he’s better. He’s welcome to stay in the meantime, but no one but the doctor should know about it. Not even your mother.”
Vegeta gave his father a confused look. “Why? I’m sure there wouldn’t be any harm in telling her. What if she could help?”
Lord Hokoru shook his head. “She’ll just be in the way and I’m sure she’ll be just as hurt if she sees the son of a close friend who’s suffering like this. Trust me. She’s better off not knowing.”
Vegeta’s gaze dropped in understanding as he turned his attention back to the man laying in his bed. “Very well.” He whispered in agreement.
His father cleared his throat. “Now, I’m off to bed and I suggest you do the same. We’ll check on him tomorrow. He should be safe hear until he heals. The Doumei clan wouldn’t think to check here, if so, then they have to get passed all the guards here.” He was sure his son knew this, but it was better to say these things out loud so they may comfort him.
Vegeta merely nodded and his father left the room, leaving behind an uncomforting silence. The candle that sat by the bedside brought little comfort to the room as it glowed dimly in the darkness. Ignoring his father’s orders, he decided to stay up a little longer until Kakarot was no longer burning up. As he ran the cool cloth across his skin, he hesitantly studied the wounds that adorned his lover’s chest, arms, sides, and legs. He had a deep wound in his shoulder and a few cuts on his arms that had to be sewn shut. Vegeta scrunched his face, not wanting to think of the sight he saw earlier that is now bandaged, but quickly ignored the images as his eyes continued their horrific journey. A cut on his one side and two on the other had to be sewn together and several on his chest and back…especially on his back. Bastards. What cowards attack when their opponents back is turned? He immediately berated himself when he already knew the answer. They’re assassins. They take advantage of every moment they can get. He reached out a shaky hand and touched one cut, that wasn’t covered, on his lover’s chest. Kakarot did say there were many of them and that they kept coming for him. The poor man. They exhausted him until he had no choice but to flee. Those bastards. Those brown nosing, heartless bastards. How dare they do this to him? He’ll get his revenge alright. Both he and Kakarot will. He kissed his lover’s forehead and rewetted the cloth before settling it on his forehead. He got up from his position and made himself more comfortable by removing some of his clothing and slipped in underneath the sheets beside his wounded lover. Deciding not to risk touching his injuries, he moved right beside his arm and held his hand that rested right by his hip. He kept their hands intertwined there and stared at the sleeping man next to him until his eyes drooped shut and sleep claimed him.

Vegeta stirred when he felt a cool hand caress his cheek. He smiled when he realized it was Kakarot. He’s awake. He must be okay then. But once he opened his eyes, he was immediately taken back as he saw what looked like a corpse laying next to him and looking at him with those dark sullen eyes. He pulled back from the cold touch and the gray body that grinned at him from where he lay as he stood a few feet away from the bed. However, when he looked at the corpse more, he realized that it was indeed, his Kakarot. “Ka-Kakarot??” He asked in a high pitch voice, not believing what his eyes were seeing.
The corpse seemed to be a bit confused. “Vegeta, what’s wrong? I’m all better now, aren’t I?” The dead Kakarot moved from his position and crawled towards him.
Vegeta started panicking as the corpse twitched it’s way towards him. “No, no, no, no! No! You…you can’t be…you can’t be dead!” He clenched his eyes shut and turned away from the body coming towards him.
The dead Kakarot didn’t hesitate in his movement. “That’s right, Vegeta. They killed me. They killed me and they’re going to kill you too!” The corpse said in a harsh, dried voice as it reached towards his beloved.
Vegeta screamed when the cold, stiff hands grabbed his arms and pulled him towards itself. He struggled, trying to get away, but the corpse’s strength was too much and it pulled him onto the bed and pinned him. Vegeta’s movements became more panicked as the creature laid on top of him and kissed him. He wanted to puke at the stench that filled his nose and the dead flesh that pressed against his. However, he didn’t get a chance to gross out some more as a sword pierced his body and penetrated his organs. He screamed as blood poured out of his wound and his mouth…
Vegeta woke up with a shout. He gasped for air as his heart tried to calm down from the terrible dream he woke up from. He looked around himself and saw Kakarot still laying next to him. He quickly leaned over and placed a hand on his love’s forehead and noticed that he was still a bit warm, but the fever seemed to have gone down. He gingerly touched his wounded chest and ran his fingers through his hair. He also noted the calm breathing that was causing Kakarot’s chest to slowly rise and fall. Vegeta sighed and pulled back to get a hold of himself. He rested his head in his hands and ran his fingers in his own hair as he calmed his heart. He even checked for the wound that appeared in his dream and to see if it was still there or not. He breathed another sigh of relief when he didn’t feel a whole in his stomach and looked back to the slumbering man next to him, as if making sure that he was still alive. After a moment, he looked around the room and noted that the sun was just rising. Just in time. He didn’t think he could sleep again after that and decided to get up.
After getting around for the day, he went over to Kakarot’s side and checked the cloth on his head. It was still a bit damp, but mostly dry. He rewetted the cloth and ran it over his head and chest again. Then, a thought came to him as he stood and took the bowl with him to dump out the dirty water and replace it with clean water. Once that was done, he returned to Kakarot’s side and tried to see if he could wake him up a bit to get him to drink some water. “Kakarot?” He called softly as he waited for a response. Not seeing any signs of waking, he tried again. “Kakarot? Can you wake up for a moment? I need you to drink some more water.” Still not getting a response, he petted his spikes back and leaned in closer. “Kakarot, please wake up.” He leaned over the slumbering man and kissed him gently on the lips. His heart fluttered in joy as Kakarot moved his head slightly, but didn’t open his eyes. “Kakarot?” He asked a little louder as Kakarot moved a little more. “I’m sorry, love. But you must drink some water. Afterwards, you can go back to sleep.” He picked up the bowl and pressed it against his lips again before tipping the water into his slightly open mouth.
Kakarot scrunched his face in pain and confusion as cool liquid entered his mouth. However, he didn’t think on it as he went ahead swallowed it. When the bowl was half empty, Vegeta pulled it away and continued running the wet cloth against his warm skin. Vegeta couldn’t believe how well Kakarot was doing. At this rate, he should be better by the end of the week and maybe he’ll regain consciousness this evening or tomorrow, but Vegeta knew he was expecting so much in so little time. He’ll have to be patient if he wants Kakarot to get better. As time went by, Vegeta stayed by his lover’s side until a knocking sounded on his door. He looked at the door in confusion as he was brought back to reality, then remembered that the morning was probably just starting. He cleared his throat and spoke. “Come in.”
His father entered with the doctor in tow. “How’s he doing?”
Vegeta smiled slightly as the doctor went over and checked Kakarot’s wounds. “He seems to be doing well. I gave him some water a little while ago. He seemed to respond pretty well.” He looked back at Kakarot and his smile grew a little more at his words.
“Did he wake at all?” Lord Hokoru asked as he studied the boy as well.
Vegeta shook his head. “Not that I know of. His temperature seems to have gone down as well.”
The doctor placed a hand on the injured man’s forehead to confirm his young Master’s words. “Yes, his temperature has gone down and the wounds are showing no signs of infection. All he needs now is food and rest.” He carefully wrapped new bandages around the young man’s wounds and put his supplies away and stood.
“Thank you, doctor.” Vegeta said quietly, not turning his attention away from Kakarot’s wounds.
The doctor was speechless for a moment. His young sire never thanked him for anything. He hesitated a moment before bowing. “You’re quite welcome, sir.” He straightened his back and watched the scene between his young Master and the wounded man for a moment, then left.
Lord Hokoru hated to break the moment, but there were other things that needed to be tended to. “Vegeta, you have to go back into town today and finish your robes. Lord Koga and Ookami are waiting for you down the hall.”
Vegeta grit his teeth. “I can’t go. I can’t just leave him here. What if he wakes up and I’m not here? He’ll wonder where he is and probably think he’s been captured-!”
“Vegeta. He’ll be fine. He took on a whole fleet of Akuto’s men. I think he’ll manage. Besides, I don’t think he’ll be waking up anytime soon. He’s exhausted from fighting all day and I’m sure wherever he’s been sleeping he hasn’t been resting very much. Especially with having to be on his guard so no one would come and kill him in the middle of the night.”
Vegeta couldn’t help but smirk. “I don’t think he’s been on his guard much lately.” He waited for his father to get the hint and heard him chuckled after a moment.
“Hehe, right. But…you still have to leave his side for the time being. I’ll be here all day, I can keep an eye on him if it’ll make you feel better.” Lord Hokoru suggested as he waited for a response.
His son reluctantly nodded. “Alright. I guess…there would be no harm in doing that.” He stood up and made his over to his father, never keeping his eyes off of the form on his bed. “What about food?” He looked up to his father then, with a worried expression.
Lord Hokoru hesitated. “Let’s wait until he wakes up. It’ll be easier to get food in his system when he does.” Vegeta’s worry dissipated as he nodded, then turned his gaze back to his love, not wanting to leave the room. “Son,” A hand rested on his shoulder. “It’s alright. There will always be someone checking in on him and you’ll see him again soon.”
Vegeta just nodded again and slowly left the room. Lord Hokoru sighed as he studied the still form on the bed and watched him breathe slowly in and out. The boy looked so much like his father, it caused his heart to ache as he realized that his closest friend was actually gone, but at the same time, he knew it was meant to be this way. It was time for his son to have the life that he never had. He stared at Kakarot for a moment longer, before removing himself from the room as well and joined his son, Lord Koga, and Ookami in the other room.
“Ah! Hokoru! Akuto wanted me to tell you that he would like you to visit with him at my manor.” Lord Koga explained as he entered the room.
“Oh, would he?” Lord Hokoru resisted the urge to grind his teeth and instead narrowed his eyes. “Well, I’m sorry to decline the offer. I’m running a little behind on my work. I must close some deals with some colleagues and make some new alliances.” Not all of it was a lie. Indeed he was behind on some work, but made up some duties that would take a few weeks time to finish.
Lord Koga couldn’t help but show his displeasure. “Aw, well that’s too bad. I shall give him your regards and perhaps schedule for another time. Well, show we go?” He looked to his son and pupil and made his way out the door.
Vegeta narrowed his eyes at his father, who was no doubt hiding something from him about Lord Akuto. Lord Hokoru noticed the look, but ignored it and left his presence. Ookami wrapped an arm around his fiancé’s waist. “Are you coming, love?” He laid on the acting skills as he waited for him to respond.
However, Vegeta didn’t pay him any mind as he watched his father leave the room. “Sure.”
“Then let’s go.” He brought the lithe noble to his side and pushed him along.
Vegeta brought his attention to the man next to him and scowled. Ookami, however, didn’t pay ‘him’ any mind as he smirked and followed his father towards the carriage.

I hope my ‘healing’ skills weren’t too off. >< Maybe they have a fever when there is an infection and lose their body temperature when blood is leaving their body? Eh, oh well. I’m not a doctor. >.> I jus wanted Vegeta to have some part in taking care of his beloved Kakarot. :) So I tossed it in, hehe. Would you believe that I teared up while writing this chapter? >< I had the image in my head and everything and it nearly broke my heart, lol. I hope I explained it right and that all of you saw the image as well. It just comes to show how much Vegeta truly cares about Kakarot…in my world anyway, hehe.
