*Two Weeks Later*
"It's coming along nicely, actually."
She put her hands on her hips as she examined the piece of work she had nearly finished.
"I'd give it a day or so, so I can make a few simple adjustments."
She smiled at him.
"Can I ask you something?"
Her blue eyes squinted at him.
"What?"
He never looked at her.
"Where are you going, anyway?"
Bulma dug through her tool bag for another sized wrench.
"Away."
Vegeta's short answer told her exactly what she had been wondering. Now was not the time to ask questions.
"Will you be back?"
"I don't know."
He fiddled with the buttons on the panel of the door.
"Does A know?"
She knew as the question left her lips that it would hit him in a sensitive spot. She looked up at him, waiting to be scolded for her nosiness.
"No."
His dark eyes shot back at her.
"I would like for it to stay that way if you don't mind."
"No problem."
She sighed.
"I think you should tell her but, it's none of my business I guess."
"It's not."
His rude tone caught her attention.
"Chill, Prince. Remember, I'm the one busting my butt building this ship for you."
She glared at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey, A!"
Piccolo covered his face.
"Careful!"
"Sorry."
She took a step away from him.
"I didn't hit you did I?"
"Thankfully, no."
He rubbed his jaw.
"Not hard enough to do any damage, anyway."
"Sorry."
She sighed.
"It's ok."
He shot her a smile. He sat down on the log next to the fire pit on the patio. She dropped down next to him with a cold bottle of water in her hand. She handed it to him and leaned against his shoulder. She dripped sweat. She took a drink of her own water, still trying to catch her breath.
"I'm proud of you."
He looked down at her.
"For what?"
She laughed.
"You've become so much stronger. It's been amazing to watch you grow, A."
He wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"I wasn't sure about you at first but..."
He hugged her.
"You're alright, kid."
She laughed as she took another drink of her water.
"Come on, guys!"
Goku shouted, waving the pair over.
"Lunch time!"
The pair jumped up and jogged over to the table. They took their places at the table and began to eat.
"How has school been, Gohan?"
She smiled at the little boy as he shoved a pickle into his mouth.
"Good."
He smiled at her shyly.
She winked at him as she began to eat her own food.
"Vegeta!"
Goku shouted, waving at the fellow Saiyan.
"Lunch is ready!"
Giana never looked up from her plate. Piccolo nudged her as the prince made his way to the table and sat down with a groan.
"Where have you been, Vegeta? You haven't trained with us in two weeks."
Goku managed through mouthfuls.
"Busy."
Vegeta's dark eyes looked up at Giana. She could feel his eyes on her. She looked up at Piccolo, trying to avoid his gaze.
Piccolo squinted at him.
"So."
The Namekian began.
"When did you plan on filling us in?"
"On what?"
Vegeta took a bite of his food.
"I think you know what I'm talking about."
Piccolo glared at him.
"You're leaving in a couple days, right?"
Vegeta nearly choked. Giana's green eyes met his dark ones. She frowned. His chest ached as he studied her face. He looked back at Piccolo.
"That stupid woman told you! Stupid bitch!"
"You idiot."
Piccolo smirked.
"No one had to tell me anything. It's written all over your face and I heard you two talking about the ship she's building you."
Vegeta took a deep, frustrated breath and looked back at Giana.
"I have business to attend to and I'd appreciate it if none of you make a big deal out of this."
He shoved himself from the table and stomped toward the house.
Giana looked up at Piccolo. He sighed.
"Go on."
He whispered.
She jumped from the table and ran after the prince. She nearly stumbled as she flew up the stairs. She knocked on his bedroom door. Her heart pounded in her ears. The door cracked open. Vegeta squinted down at her.
"What do you want?"
"Can we talk?"
Giana's sad eyes could always break him. He let the door open as he walked to the window. She studied him as he gazed out to the horizon. He was shirtless, his defined muscles glistened in the rays of sunshine making their way through the glass. He shoved his hands in his pockets with a sigh. She closed the door behind her. Her back leaned against it.
"You're leaving?"
"Yes."
He answered quickly.
"You will not talk me out of it. If that is your reason for being here, forget it. My mind is made up."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I'm not going to try to talk you out of anything."
She took a few steps toward him.
"Why?"
"I need to get stronger."
He shrugged.
"I can't do that here. There are too many distractions."
"When will you be back?"
Her voice shook.
"I don't know if I will be back, Ana."
He leaned his palms against the window seal. The muscles in his back flexed as his shoulder blades drew close together.
"I don't know if I have a reason to come back. I don't want 'friends' and I don't have you. There really isn't a reason for my return."
Giana felt her heart break as he spoke. She took a few more steps toward him. Her arms wrapped around him. His body shook. She leaned her soft face against his back.
"I hope you find a reason to return."
He fought hard to control himself. He wanted nothing more than to hold her, kiss her, make love to her. He took a deep breath, taking in her scent. Her warm skin against his made his skin tingle. He let his head fall. He tried to focus on the window seal under his palms.
"Do I have a reason to return, Giana?"
He muttered.
"Do you?"
She squeezed him tighter before kissing him gently between the shoulder blades. His body shook.
He turned around, looking down at her with wondering, dark, eyes.
"Are you implying that you are the reason I should come back?"
Her sad green eyes pierced through him.
"Do you want me to come back to you?"
He held his breath, waiting for her answer.
"I don't want you to leave me."
She shook her head.
"I don't want to lose you again."
She frowned. Her fingers gently touched his cheek.
"It won't feel right with you gone."
His fingers slipped into her hair, cupping her face.
"I'm going to kiss you."
He managed.
"I won't stop you."
She whispered.
Vegeta's mouth crashed against hers. A familiar warmth rose in him. He loved her. He loved her more than he ever wanted to admit. She was the universe that he called home. Life would never be right without her in it. He knew this. He knew life wouldn't be right without her. Would he still leave? Would he leave her behind once more and carry out the quest he so desperately needed? Could he walk away from her?
Her arms wrapped around his waist. Her hands held his back firmly as his tongue pushed past her inviting lips.
"I love you, Vegeta."
She muttered, breathlessly, between kisses.
"I know."
He pressed his forehead to hers, breaking their embrace.
"It's so much more than I deserve."
Giana pulled him closer as she frowned.
"You deserve better."
He whispered.
"You deserve who I used to be."
Vegeta's dark eyes caught her gaze.
"I can never be that again."
"I love you, Vegeta. The 'you' then and the 'you' now. I've accepted that we aren't the same Saiyans that we used to be. We are shaped and changed by our experiences and while I have no idea what changed you, I wouldn't have you any other way."
She kissed his lips again.
"To me, you have been and always will be perfectly imperfect. I've loved you my entire life. That has never changed. It never will."
Vegeta watched her for a few silent seconds before capturing her lips with his own. She shook as he lifted her to the desk. She bit at his bottom lip as his fingers toyed with the hem of her top.
"Don't leave me here alone, Vegeta."
She whispered.
"I don't want to be without you."
"Giana..."
He pulled back to look at her, his labored breaths made her shiver.
"I..."
The tap on the door made them both jump. She shivered as his arms released her. He yanked the door open. Bulma's sparkling blue eyes shot up at him. She smiled and handed him a packet of papers.
"Read these."
She smiled.
"It's just information about your..."
She glanced at Giana, clearly flustered as she hopped off of the desk.
"Um..."
"She knows, Bulma."
Vegeta never looked at the blue-haired woman as he thumbed through the papers in his hands.
"Oh."
She gave Giana a disappointed glance.
"Thank you. Is it finished?"
He started to close the door.
"It sure is."
She giggled, batting her eyes at the Saiyan prince.
"Thank you. I leave tonight then."
He closed the door and sat on the bed, still flipping through the pages of the packet. He could feel Giana's eyes on him as she stood where he had left her.
"Like I said, you won't stop me."
"If you wanted to stay, Vegeta, you would. I realize there's nothing I can say or do to stop you."
She muttered, watching him with sad eyes. Her heart broke as she examined him, flipping through the pages. Inside, she was begging him to change his mind, to tell her he loved her and decide to stay. Outside, she was visibly reeling but refused to say a word.
"I better go. I'm training with Piccolo today."
She quickly reached for the door.
"Wait!"
Vegeta's voice boomed, forcing her to freeze. She looked back at him, his dark eyes almost glaring at her. His voice caught in his throat. He didn't have anything to say, he just knew he didn't want her to leave him. He enjoyed her presence and wanted to beg her to stay with him. Was that fair? Could he ask her to stay when he would be leaving in no more than a few hours?
"What?"
She squinted at him, her eyes swelling with tears.
He watched her for a few more seconds.
"Nothing."
He finally answered before turning his attention back to the papers in his hands. He held his breath as she door creaked open and she slipped out of the room.
"Don't go."
He whispered to himself before falling backwards on the bed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You ok?"
Piccolo squinted at her as she emerged back to the back patio.
She nodded.
"I'm fine."
"Where is he going?"
Gohan asked, still eating his lunch.
"I'm not sure, honey."
She smiled at the sweet little boy as she slid into the seat in front of him.
"I don't think he is sure."
"That's silly."
Gohan shook his head.
"What do you mean, Buddy?"
Goku looked down at his little boy.
"It's silly to leave with no destination."
He shrugged.
"How will he know when he gets there if he doesn't know where he's going?"
"Sometimes, it's good not to have a destination in mind, Gohan."
Piccolo smiled at the child.
"Sometimes, you don't know where you're going until you get there."
"Like, A?"
Gohan looked up at the green eyed Saiyan.
"Yes, Sweetie."
She ruffled his hair.
"Like me."
He giggled and shoved more food into his mouth.
"If I left, I'd take you with me, A."
He managed with a mouthful of food.
"You would?"
She giggled.
"You wouldn't want to take your dad?"
"I would."
He smiled at Goku.
"I would take you though."
"Why is that?"
She smiled bright before taking a bite of her food.
Gohan blushed as his dark eyes darted away from her.
"Because she's pretty?"
Piccolo chuckled as he examined the boy.
Gohan flushed a shade of red and threw a chip at his mentor.
"Shut up, Piccolo!"
"Aw!"
Giana giggled.
"You're cute too, Gohan."
She winked at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a long day of training, Giana had to rest her eyes. "for just a second." She told herself. Vegeta had locked himself in his room, occasionally coming out to eat or use the restroom. Giana had done well with avoiding him for the most part. She wanted to be with him. She wanted to hold him and beg him to stay.
Giana jumped from her bed as a bright light shot through her window. She looked over at the clock.
"2:30 in the morning? What in the world?"
She pulled on her shoes and ran for the patio. She froze as she examined the ship in front of her.
"Woah."
"Bulma is quite the master mechanic isn't she?"
Vegeta's raspy voice startled her.
"Yeah."
She frowned as she glanced at the bag on his shoulder.
"You're leaving."
"It's not a secret, Ana. You knew this was coming."
He scowled, pushing past her and tossing his things into the storage compartment of the ship. He keyed something into the key pad at the control station and jogged back into the house. She rubbed her arms as the cold night air bit at her skin. She glanced at the control station. She looked around the cockpit.
"Impressive, isn't it?"
Vegeta pushed past her and into the ship.
"Very."
She muttered.
He sighed, letting his eyes examine her.
"I have to go, Ana."
"Right."
She took a few steps back, exiting the ship. The cold ground chilled her feet.
"Bye."
He grinned at her.
"Be careful.
Her eyebrows knitted together.
"Stay safe."
"I'll be fine."
He chuckled.
"Ana?"
"Yeah?"
Her sad green eyes watched him.
"Don't wait for me."
He commanded.
"There is no guarantee that I will be back."
She wiped the tears, now streaming down her face.
"Do you understand me?"
He growled.
"You deserve a fulfilling life."
"Ok."
She reluctantly nodded.
"Take care of her, Piccolo."
Vegeta glanced at the Namekian that now stood behind Giana. His dark eyes met her green ones. His thumb brushed the tears from her cheek before tracing her chin.
"Keep my princess safe."
"Of course."
Piccolo crossed his arms.
Vegeta squinted at her before disappearing into the ship. She wiped her cheeks and waved. She watched as the doors closed and the ship began to hover off of the ground. She shielded her face with her hands as dirt and dust floated around her. With a sharp blast of wind, he was gone. She looked up into the night sky just as the shimmer of his ship disappeared into the blackness.
"Do you think he will be back?"
She managed through her tears as stared into the sky
"This was his choice, A."
Piccolo wrapped an arm around her.
"Come on inside."
She rubbed her arms before wrapping one arm around Piccolo's waist and letting him lead her inside and back to her room. He hugged her tight.
"It will be alright."
He squeezed her, trying his best to comfort her. She shook, though, he wasn't sure if it was from the cold night air or the sadness he sensed, coursing through her.
"I'll see you in the morning, A. That is, if you want to train tomorrow."
"I'll see you then."
She forced a smile.
"Ok."
He smiled back before slipping away from her, down the hallway, and out of the doors.
Giana glanced at the door that separated her from Vegeta's room. She squinted. She reached for his door handle and slowly pushed it open. The room was cold without him in it. She looked around. It was empty. A few outfits, ones that he clearly didn't pick out, still hung in the closet. Her fingers ran over the fabric as tears ran down her cheeks. Her shoulders shook as she sobbed. He was gone again. She felt empty. She felt alone. This all too familiar feeling was almost overwhelming. She dropped down onto the foot of his bed, burying her face in her palms. She fell back onto the bed. A crunching noise under her caught her attention. She reached under her and pulled the paper out from under her.
Ana,
If you're reading this then you have come into my room without permission and in that case, you can be assured that I do not approve and would be livid if I were there. In a case such as this, if you're reading this, then you already know I have carried out my decision to move on from this planet and this life. You probably don't understand and I never expected you to. Know this has nothing to do with not wanting to be with you for that is furthest from the truth. I could never say this to you and I expect this to never be mentioned again if our paths are to cross in the future but, for what it's worth, I'm proud of you. You've come so far from the girl I knew back home. Though you've always been strong, caring, and proud, you have become the beautiful woman my mother always knew you would be. While my seventeen-year-old self never expected our lives to become the way they are, I am happy to have been a part of your most recent milestone. You are an amazing woman, Giana. That is something I have always known about you. In my absence, I expect you to continue training. You can be the warrior this universe has been begging for. Kakarot won't know how to handle you once you reach your full potential and I can't wait!
I know I can't say it in person but, I love you, Ana. I always have. No matter where life takes us, you will always be my princess. That is who you were destined to be. I can only dream of what Home would be like with a woman like you as their queen. What a beautifully different world it would have been. Because that is just that, a dream, you are stuck making Earth a better place with your confidence, smile, laugh, and warm heart, something I know I can never achieve. I wish I could show you how much you mean to me, Ana. Know that I will cherish our last night together for the rest of my days and I can only hope that, when you have married a good man, had children, and grown old in your years, that you can look back on the years we spent together and smile. I hope I can make you just as proud of me as I am of you and you tell your grandchildren all about the brave and noble Prince Vegeta.
I love you, Giana. That will never change. Take care of the Z fighters. They need saving from time to time and without me there, I fear for them.
Always yours,
Vegeta
She wasn't sure how long she had been there or even of the time. She held the letter close and drifted off to sleep as one last tear tickled her nose as it trailed down her skin.
