Leaving

Very short, but it's pretty powerful. I think so anyways.

Leaving

He couldn't tell them. How could he? He'd never leave if they asked, or even if they didn't, they would try to be brave and he would crumble before them. The war in Amara had started months ago, but the wheels of the military moved slowly, and Roy had hoped it would be over before they turned to alchemy. He had been wrong. The call had come, all State Alchemists left for the fields in the morning, first train at 0500 hours. Now, he stood in the hall, listening to Ed's soft breathing in the room before him, hearing the small clinks and rustles from Al's room. He turned suddenly and stalked down the hall to the door and out of the house.

Headquarters loomed in front of him shortly, bleak as always. He shuddered at what he was about to do, but pushed on; he had hoped to find another way but he was out of time, there was no alternative now. The small elevator took his access code and delivered him to the lower basement. There, he moved to the east wall and touched the hidden array, opening the door. There was a small lab, hidden from almost all, but Maes had once told him of this place in a moment of drunken confidence. Here, they did the most forbidden research. He slipped in and grabbed what he was after, grateful the place was empty.

The next morning, when Al and Ed rose to make breakfast, there was a small package and a letter on the table. Ed opened the letter, reading aloud, 'My boys. I realize I should have told you, but I would not have been able to leave if I had seen you again. Forgive me. I have been called to fight, my office staff will join me as will Maes. I leave you this package, use it. It has cost much and you mustn't tell anyone that you have seen it. This is my last command to you, as you will be of age by the time I return. Do not leave the city for any reason, it is not safe and I will find you when I return. I will return, I swear. I love you both, Roy Mustang.'

The paper fluttered to the table as the two boys raced for Roy's room, finding his favorite bag, personal effects, and coat gone. “How could he do this?” screamed Ed, running frantically around the house, searching for a sign, any sign that it was some kind of joke.

Al had returned to the kitchen and opened the package. He called out, “Brother, come here.” When his older brother flew into the kitchen again, he came to a sudden halt. There, gleaming in the small box was a red stone, just bigger than his fist. After all their research, all the horrific findings they had uncovered, the myths that were inseparable from fact, there sat the Philosopher's Stone, so innocent looking, so costly. They stood and stared at it before returning quietly to their bedrooms to think.
