A/N: Sorry I took a while. O.o Just got out of school and am now searching for a job and a place to live, so I’m not on the computer as much. :/ I had half of this written when I posted the last chapter, but I finished it now so…here you all are. ^^
Lord Hokoru was in his study, looking over papers that were waiting for his signature, as a knock sounded on his door. He sighed, wondering what else could add on to his stress and responded. “Come.”
The presence on the other side casually came in and grinned at the noble in front of him. “Good afternoon, Hokoru. You look busy, as always.”
Lord Hokoru looked up from his work and wanted to groan in his misfortune. “Akuto. What brings you here?” He looked back down at the papers in hand as Lord Akuto made himself comfortable by seating himself right in front of his desk.
“Well, I knew you wouldn’t accept my invitation from Koga, so I thought I’d invite myself over.” Lord Hokoru didn’t look up as he nodded. Lord Akuto frowned at the lack of response and decided to mention his real reason for coming over. “Also, I heard that you were caring for an injured man and I had to investigate. So, who is he?” He crossed his arms in a pouting form as he waited for an explanation.
Lord Hokoru froze and slowly looked up. “Who…did you hear that from?”
Lord Akuto waved it off. “That doesn’t matter. You know how rumors go. Now, answer my question.”
Lord Hokoru tensed at the order and tried to come up with something believable. “Well, I don’t know myself really.” He held his breath as he repeated what he said in his head, trying to put together in how this could make sense.
Lord Akuto leaned forward. “If you don’t know him, then why did you accept him into your home? For all you know, it could be the samurai. What if he’s after you or your son?”
“Because…he mentioned something about the samurai. He told me that he knew something about him and lost consciousness. I believe he may have vital information regarding the samurai and will tell me once he recovers.” Lord Hokoru released a breath he’d been holding.
“Is that so?” Lord Akuto seemed skeptical. “Well, in that case, I’d like to see the man for myself.” He stood and proceeded to leave the room, when Lord Hokoru stood up and quickly went over to him and grabbed his arm.
“Uh, you can’t.” He answered anxiously.
Lord Akuto looked down at the hand that had a hold of his arm and watched as it hesitantly let him go. “And why not?”
Lord Hokoru fidgeted. “Because…he hasn’t regained consciousness since yesterday and I really want him to rest so he may awake sooner. After all, I don’t help just anyone-” He stopped himself.
“That’s what it sounds like to me Hokoru. You don’t know who this person is or if he even has the information you want. This could be a trap and it would be a real shame if anything happened to you.” Lord Akuto took a step closer to Hokoru and reached out to him, before Lord Hokoru took a step back.
“Uh, that’s…very kind of you, but I have plenty of guards watching him. So, if he tries anything, they’ll be sure to take care of it.” He smiled in reassurance as Lord Akuto still seemed skeptical.
“I don’t know, Hokoru. Seems to me like you’re hiding something from me.” He took another step towards the other noble, who took another step back.
“I don’t know what you mean. Now, if you don’t mind, I have a lot of work to do.” Lord Hokoru returned to his desk and stared at the papers on it, waiting for the other to leave.
However, Lord Akuto smirked and made his way around the desk and stood behind the other. He then leaned over and whispered in his ear. “You can’t run away from me forever. Now that my brother’s gone, there’s nothing holding me back.” He ran a hand down the other’s chest, who shivered at his words and his touch.
Lord Hokoru quickly stood from his seat and put some distance between them. “When will you get it through your head that I’m not interested?! I’m married! Now, I’d appreciate it if you left.” He gestured towards the door.
Lord Akuto frowned. “I always get what I want, Hokoru. It’s about time you get that through ‘your’ head.” Lord Hokoru tensed when it seemed that Akuto was making his way towards him, but was leaving the room instead. “I shall return soon and see about this ‘messenger’ when he’s conscious.” He narrowed his eyes at the other and left the room.
Lord Hokoru breathed a sigh of relief and went back to his desk. He was always on edge whenever Akuto visited. It was just like when he visited Bardock. The man constantly bothered him with his sly words and greedy touches, but Bardock always managed to save him from the harassment. He missed him so much. Why did he have to go? He glared at his papers. It’s all because of Akuto. It’s because of him Bardock was dead. It’s because of him his son has to marry a spoiled noble and not the man that was recovering in his son’s bed. He sighed and rested his head on his hand. He must come up with a plan to rid of him. Perhaps he can kill him in his sleep. It would be easier than his only plan, but it’s also the most cowardly. Maybe he has more protection while he’s asleep or perhaps he’s expecting it. Well, he knew one thing, he’ll have to know more about the man’s defenses and his plans in getting rid of Kakarot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kakarot awoke with his head spinning and groaned. After attempting to get his head straight, he looked around himself and noticed an environment that he wasn’t familiar with. He immediately started to panic. Did he get captured? Why would they keep him alive if they were sent to kill him? Did they want something else from him? He tried to remember how he got there and can only remember bits and pieces of what transpired last night. He remembers being at one of the small restaurants in town and talking to Vegeta, but after that, it was very vague. He managed to sit up with much effort and looked down at himself. The events of the previous day came back to him as he saw the bandages that held his wounds together. He tenderly touched a few, realizing that he’ll have more scars adorning his body. He sighed and turned his thoughts back to where he was.
There was a window on one side of the room and he could see the view of the wall a few yards from the place and of the town a few miles away. He wasn’t tied up in any way and he thought for a moment, maybe he wasn’t captured…or maybe they thought he would be unconscious for a few days yet before he could try and escape. He looked towards the door that seemed to lead out of the room. If he really wasn’t a prisoner, then he could leave. So, with a new task in mind, he swung his legs over the side of the bed and took a moment before standing. At first, he couldn’t maintain his balance and fell back on the bed. He sighed in exhaustion, but didn’t give up as he tried again. He managed to stand, but with the help of gripping the side of the mattress. Slowly, he made his way around the bed and darted for the dresser that was a few feet away. Once he had a firm grip of it, he inched his way towards the door and clung to it. With some effort, he managed to take a step back and pull the door open.
He was surprised to find it unlocked and noticed it led to a hallway. He looked down one side then the other and decided it was clear to make his way down it. Keeping close to the wall, he kept a hand on the wall beside him as he trudged toward his unknown destination. Just when he was about to reach the end of the hall, a figure turned from around the corner and was heading towards him. He stopped and froze in panic when the figure saw him and stopped as well. Both stared at each other in surprise and Kakarot couldn’t help but notice that this figure looked familiar. He squinted at the figure for a closer inspection and realized this person looked just like Vegeta, except older. After the Vegeta-like person recovered, he took a few steps towards the wounded man. “I didn’t expect you to wake so soon. You shouldn’t be walking around-” Lord Hokoru explained as Kakarot interrupted him once he figured out who he was.
Kakarot immediately dropped to the floor on his hands and knees before the older noble. “Lord Hokoru!” His body shook as he abruptly hit the floor and tried to keep up his position.
Lord Hokoru bent over slightly toward the young man in panic. “Get up! You must return to my son’s room this instant!” Kakarot looked up from his position in confusion, then the events of the evening slowly came back to him. “Quickly!” Lord Hokoru whispered with urgency when Kakarot didn’t move, then he helped him off the floor and returned to the room.
Kakarot stumbled slightly as they entered the room and caught himself on the bed. He turned once Lord Hokoru shut the door and seated himself on the mattress. The older noble turned to him once he thought that no one heard them and came to investigate. “Well, you must be feeling better if you’re already awake. Are you in any pain? I can have the doctor come in and look at you again.”
Kakarot was a bit confused at the last statement, but answered his question none the less. “Some, but I’ve had worse. Why am I here? Are you going to turn me in?” He asked a bit skeptically.
Lord Hokoru couldn’t help but show his worry towards the boy in his expression, but it was quickly replaced with annoyance. “If I was going to turn you in, why would I bother wasting the time to tend to your injuries? You probably don’t remember much, but Vegeta brought you here last night because of your condition. I don’t know if he’s told you, but I’ve been wanting to meet with you. I’ve come up with a basic plan in how to dispose of Akuto, but we need to know how.” He crossed his arms as he thought about it.
This peaked his interest. “What’s your plan so far?”
Lord Hokoru snapped out of his thoughts to answer the question. “To break his clan from the inside and have them rebel against him somehow or quit working for him altogether. I assume none of them worked for your father before he passed?”
Kakarot turned his attention to the floor and nodded sadly. “But how will your plan work?” He turned his attention back to the older.
“I’m not really sure. Either we come up with an idea or come up with a completely different plan. Either way, it won’t be easy.” Lord Hokoru explained as Kakarot nodded.
“Well, it sounds like we’re back to square one because I know nothing of their weak points. It’s been…so long since I’ve returned. I hardly know anything about what it means to be a noble.” His head bowed in disappointment.
Pity, once again, took over Lord Hokoru’s features. “I see. Well, perhaps I can look around Akuto’s business and see what I can find.” Though, that means that he’ll have to put on some serious acting skills and do some things that he’ll probably regret later.
Kakarot perked up at the suggestion. “Could you? That would be really helpful.”
Lord Hokoru tried not to have a tantrum at that moment at even coming up with the idea. “Yes. Now, you should rest. Vegeta will be pleased to see that you’re awake. You’re a strong one to wake so soon after enduring the injuries that you have.” Lord Hokoru complimented before proceeding to leave the room.
“Wait, my Lord. Do you know where Vegeta is?” Kakarot stopped him before he left.
Lord Hokoru turned his attention back to Kakarot and smiled. “Since you call my son by his name, then you may call me Hokoru.” He hesitated before answering his question. “Vegeta is out with his Master and…son getting their robes fitted.” He doesn’t know what all Vegeta has told him, but he decided to keep it light for now.
Kakarot seemed to understand the meaning of the answer and a fallen expression appeared on his tired face. “Oh, I see.”
Lord Hokoru couldn’t help but question the reaction. “Has…he told you? About Ookami?” Kakarot nodded as Lord Hokoru tensed. He hated to see that look on a face so familiar. “Well, that’s how things are. If only things didn’t turn out the way they did in the past, then it might be different.” Kakarot just nodded again as the older decided to change the subject. “So, are you hungry? From the looks of it, I’d say it’s been a while since you’ve had a decent meal.”
Kakarot’s expression lightened at the mention of food. “Well, thanks to your son, I’ve actually been fed quite well recently, but I am hungry now. I’m always hungry.” He explained further at the chance of getting more nourishment into his worn body.
Lord Hokoru smiled at the thought of his son bringing food to Kakarot and nodded. “Alright, then. You just make yourself comfortable and I’ll bring something for you.” He waited for Kakarot to confirm what he said, then left the room.
Kakarot looked at the huge bed he sat upon and crawled towards the pillows to do what the Lord told him to. His eyes wanted to close, but tried to keep himself awake at the promise of food filling his belly.
Meanwhile, in town, Vegeta and Ookami waited at the entrance of the church in boredom as they waited for Lord Koga to finish speaking to one of the priests about their leader to wed them together. Vegeta sighed, wanting to get this over quickly and back to his room so he may be at Kakarot’s side. He wanted to be there when he woke. As soon as they finished fitting their robes, Vegeta had the strongest urge to get in the driver’s seat of the carriage and steer them back home, but then he thought, perhaps it wouldn’t take too long to talk to a priest. However, it seems like it’s been hours now. How much longer are they going to be there? How much longer must he agonize over his beloved’s well being before he goes mad? He couldn’t stand being away from him for another minute. Nor could he stand to be in his fiancé’s presence any longer. He swore if the jerk looked at him with those malicious eyes and smile at him with that cocky smirk, then he was going to lose it.
Figures, as soon as he thought of the image, the real thing appeared before him. Vegeta growled at the bastard. “What the hell is in your head?! I’m getting tired of that face of yours! Are you going to let me in on the secret?!”
Seeing Vegeta explode like this made Ookami even more amused. “My apologies, love. It’s just that…I have nothing better to do than think about you. Surely you can’t blame me. I’m also excited about the day where we’ll finally be bonded. I’m imagining what else could happen that day.” His smirk widened and his eyes gleamed mischievously.
Vegeta couldn’t help but think that there might be another meaning behind his words, besides the obvious. “Hn. You imagine too much. I suggest you help your father finish up with the priest, otherwise we’ll be here all day.” He crossed his arms and looked away in annoyance.
Ookami’s mood went down slightly at the order of the lithe noble, but couldn’t help but agree as he made his way over to his father to do just that. “Oh, I know! The ceremony will be glorious! They’re a smart match, I can tell. The town will be a much better place once we have new leaders taking over the clan.” Lord Koga gushed as he went on about the future of his son and pupil.
Ookami just rolled his eyes. He swore the man spoke like a woman when it came to such events. He cleared his throat as he interrupted them. “Father, if you don’t mind, we’d like to go home sometime. Dinner time will be soon.”
Lord Koga gave his son an annoyed look at first, but then realized how much the time has gone by. “Oh, of course. How rude of me, to keep you when you must have other things to do. Do tell your high priest I stopped by and have him send me a message if he approves or not.” He turned his back to the low priest as he waved.
The priest bowed. “Yes, Your Highness. I shall.” Then went about his business.
Vegeta sighed in relief. Finally, he was about to return home on foot at the pace this day was going. He couldn’t help but nod in thanks as Ookami passed by him. Sure, he was grateful, but he wasn’t going to say it.
Some time later, the lovely aroma of food hit Kakarot in the face as he waited impatiently for the origin of the smell to enter his room any minute. Sure enough, a moment later, Lord Hokoru returned with a huge tray of food and set it on the small table next to the bed. Kakarot didn’t waste any time as he crawled over to the food and engulfed it. Lord Hokoru was surprised at the lack of manners the younger had, but tried not to pay it any mind as he took a seat in a nearby chair while Kakarot finished. Kakarot took a moment to chew his food and decided to ask a question that was bothering him as soon as the older returned. “How come you didn’t have a servant bring the food?” He continued eating as he waited for an answer.
“Because I thought it’d be dangerous if anyone else knew that you were here. Though, most of my servants are ignorant about the happenings of the outside world, every once in a while, they’ll hear something that the guards will talk about and it’s just too risky.” Lord Hokoru explained as he watched Kakarot eat with slight disgust.
Kakarot recognized the look and chuckled slightly. Sometimes, Vegeta would look at him the same way whenever he ate. He swallowed what he had in his mouth and spoke. “I see, and when will Vegeta be back? Do you know?”
“He should be back sometime this evening. Maybe earlier, who knows. There’s a lot to do yet before the ceremony starts.” He chuckled. “And I imagine Vegeta will be in quite the mood when he returns. I don’t know how he puts up with that boy. I don’t envy him, that’s for sure.” Kakarot tried not to scowl, but instead smirked in return and suddenly yawned. After the excitement that went on today and his belly full, sleep was suddenly catching up to his weak body. Lord Hokoru noticed the signs and stood. “I’ll go ahead and take this back. You should get some rest before Vegeta returns and don’t move around too much, otherwise you’ll open your wounds again.” He took the tray and proceeded to leave the room.
Kakarot smiled sleepily at the order. It was almost like having a father again. “Thank you.” He responded as he got settled into the bed again and closed his eyes.
Lord Hokoru hesitated in his step and looked back at the tired form on the bed. He smiled softly and made his way out to the hall and closed the door quietly behind him.
Vegeta was practically bouncing in his seat with impatience. He couldn’t wait to get home, there wasn’t a moment when he wasn’t thinking about Kakarot all day. Lord Koga and Ookami eyed at his strange behavior, but ignored it as they neared home. When they finally got to the Hokoru manor, Vegeta wasted no time in letting the guards open the door for him and burst out of the carriage himself. “Have a good evening, Master and Ookami.” He said quickly as he hurried to the entrance. Lord Koga blinked after him as the carriage went on it’s merry way down the road.
Dinner was just being served as Vegeta made his way into the dining hall. “Oh, Vegeta! You’re back. How was your day? Did you finish your robes?” Lady Hokoru stopped in front of her son, who seemed really anxious.
He didn’t want to chat with his mother, he wanted to see Kakarot! “Uh, it went well. We finally finished our robes and we sought a high priest.” He said quickly as he eyed the hallway that led to his room.
“Oh, well splendid! Dinner is just about ready, shall we wait for your father?” Lady Hokoru seated herself in her usual spot as Vegeta looked from her to the hallway.
“Uh, actually…I need to check on something-” Just as he was about to make his way down the hallway, his father was coming from it.
“Oh, Vegeta…you’re back.” Lord Hokoru cleared his throat. “There is something I must speak with you about, but first, we’ll eat.” He answered nonchalantly as he seated himself at the head of the table.
Vegeta wanted to growl in impatience, but decided that Kakarot wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon and seated himself as well. He couldn’t help but stare at his father the entire time they ate. Why was he just coming from down that hall? Did Kakarot wake or was he just checking on him? He narrowed his eyes at his father in thought. He’ll have to wait until dinner is finished.
Kakarot stirred at the sound of someone calling for him. He ignored it, mistaking it for a dream, as the voice continued to call for him and a light touch went across his forehead. He smiled softly in his sleep at the touch and another, deeper voice spoke. “Leave him be and let him rest. I imagine it’s been a while since he’s had a decent rest. He’ll wake up tomorrow and you’ll talk to him then.” Silence ensued for a while, when he heard a sigh next to him and curious, but gentle hands roamed over his wounds. He tried not to cringe at the expected sting to come from the touches as they stopped altogether at the scowl on his face. “Perhaps the doctor should have another look at his wounds and maybe do something about the pain.” The deep voice suggested.
He felt a slight movement next to him and the former voice responded. “Yes. I believe he should.” The sound of water swishing around was heard and a cool cloth was laid on his forehead. He sighed softly at the comfortable feeling when goose bumps formed on his skin as it moved down his neck.
Another sigh was heard some distance away. “Son, I have to tell you something.” The deep voice sounded guilty and tired. There was a tense feeling in the air as the silence dragged on. “Akuto knows that he’s here.”
The solid form next to him tensed. “What? How?” The lighter voice became shocked and more angry.
There seemed to be another hesitation in the air. “He…visited while you were out and told me. Actually, he heard that an injured man was taken in by us. You do know what this means. He’ll tell Koga and Ookami and then they’ll come over here and match the description to the wanted samurai…” He trailed off at all the outcomes sure to come. “Perhaps you were followed when you brought him back or were seen with him. After all, they seemed very determined to end his life yesterday. Perhaps they had the area surrounded or were expecting you to-”
“You’re speculating a lot of things! Don’t you think I know all the possibilities of how we could’ve been seen? I don’t care. All I care about is Kakarot’s well being. All you seem to care about is getting rid of Akuto!” There was another sigh. “And I understand…I want him gone too, but there would be no point in getting rid of him if Kakarot isn’t with me.” There was a moment of silence until it was broken. “By the way, what’s with you and Akuto? I’ve never seen you give such hateful stares to a human being before. Is it because you know the truth or is it something else?” The wet cloth continued to glide across Kakarot’s skin, finding it hard to concentrate on the conversation at hand.
There was a groan of displeasure. “I suppose you can say…it’s both, but it’s nothing to concern yourself with. It has nothing to do with you or Kakarot.” The deeper voice went from hesitant to angry.
“Alright.” The lighter voice responded in defense, then changed the subject. “I’m not leaving Kakarot again until he’s better. If Akuto knows that he’s here, then it’s best not to leave him alone.”
“I suppose your right. I have a meeting to attend to and will be leave tomorrow. I shall return in a few days. You shouldn’t have a part in anything else until the day of the ceremony, but Koga can be unpredictable at times and I do worry about you when it comes to Ookami.”
“Thank goodness. I don’t know how much longer I can put up with that bastard. I can’t even stand him now, how am I going to put up with him when we’re married?”
Kakarot didn’t like where this conversation was going and tried to move on to another dream, but it continued. “I don’t know, son. That’s what I don’t envy about you.”
“Thanks, father.” The lighter voice next to him responded with sarcasm. The cloth moved from his chest and back to his forehead. “I think we should get the doctor before the evening is over.” The bed moved slightly as the figure next to him stood.
He heard a pair of footsteps moving away from him and no other noises were made. Assuming that the dream was over, his mind drifted and succumbed to a different dream.
