Wufei moved into the restaurant with trepidation. Duo and Heero helped ease his panic some; otherwise he’d have already run home. But when his eyes fell on the last person he expected to see, he almost bolted.
“Please wait.”
He froze. ‘Please’. Had that word ever left his father’s mouth in his hearing before? Not that he could recall. He turned slowly and faced the man who’d damn near ended his reason for living. “Why are you here?”
“By request from your… lover.”
His eyes widened. “Nothing’s changed. I’m still who I was when you kicked me out.”
Chang nodded. “I know, and that’s okay.” He struggled over the last word but continued. “I may never approve or understand, but your mother misses you.” He cleared his throat. “As do I. I’ll accept you as you are.”
Wufei firmly held himself in the rigid, uncaring pose he’d been taught since birth, but all he wanted to do was fall into his father’s arms and beg for a relationship like Duo and Heero had with their fathers. He took a breath. “I love them.” He folded his hands around Duo’s and Heero’s. “You can accept that?”
Chang swallowed, looking extremely uncomfortable. “If it means we can have a relationship with you again? Yes, I can.”
Wufei felt light headed. “But less than six years ago you-“
“I was wrong.”
He’d have collapsed to the floor if Heero and Duo had not been supporting him. His father just admitted he was wrong? The sky must be falling. “Come again?”
Chang smiled sadly. “You’re my son. Forgive me for not accepting you back then.”
His eyes began to burn and he closed them. “Forgive me for not being the son you wanted.”
“I can’t forgive you for that. No forgiveness is needed. You are who you are, and so there’s no reason to apologize.”
Wufei looked back to his father. “Thank you.”
He shrugged and reached a hand out to squeeze Wufei’s shoulder awkwardly. “I’ve interrupted your dinner enough. Call me later.”
Wufei leaned heavily into his lovers’ arms as his father left. “He’s willing to accept me.” He shook his head. “Did that just happen?”
“Yeah.”
He looked to his lovers. “Who called him?”
“I did because Heero asked me to.”
He turned to the older man coming up to the side. He was tall with slightly graying hair and a face too young for his age. Wufei had only seen him in magazines of the world’s most rich and famous.
He bowed his head. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Matthews.”
The man smiled. “The pleasure is all mine.” He turned to Heero. “I must say, your choice of lovers has greatly improved.”
He grimaced slightly. “Matt and Eric are a thing of the past.”
His father nodded, leading them through the restaurant to their table. “I never really liked them anyway.” He sat and appraised Wufei. “I must thank you. I do believe the two of you are the best thing that’s ever happened to my son.”
Wufei blushed but smiled. “The feeling is mutual, Mr. Matthews. But I believe you’d probably take the top spot on that list. After all, if you hadn’t have adopted him, we probably wouldn’t have met him.”
The rest of the lunch passed in companionable conversation. When they made their goodbyes, Duo glanced to his watch. “I need to stop by Quatre’s and pick up some pictures.”
“Can I come with you? He was going to let me borrow a video.”
Duo shrugged. “Sure, why don’t we all go?”
Heero shook his head. “I need to get back to the hotel.” He fished the keys out of his pocket. “You two take the car. I’ll catch a cab.”
“You sure?” Duo asked.
He nodded. “Yeah. It’s a cheaper ride to the hotel than it is to Quatre’s.”
“All right.” Wufei leaned in to lay a quick kiss to Heero’s lips. “See you at home.”
“Okay.” He watched them leave, bantering with each other over who was going to drive, and smiled. Life had never been more beautiful. The wait for the cab wasn’t too long and he made it up to the penthouse in no time. He had changed out of his jeans into dress pants and an undershirt when he heard the front door open. He frowned.
“Duo? Wufei?” There was no answer and he went slowly into the living room. Sudden pain exploded in his head and a moment later he found himself staring up at the last two people he ever wanted to see again.
Eric was holding him down, legs covering his, a hand holding his left arm down, and his other forearm pressed to Heero’s neck. Matt held tight to his right arm with a twisted grin on his face.
“Miss us, lover?”
He clenched his teeth. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“We need some cash,” Eric said.
Heero growled low in his throat. “We’re through. I’m not giving you shit. Why the hell can’t you two find someone else to harass?”
Matt snorted. “You’re rich. It’s only right you help those less fortunate.”
“You’re not ‘less fortunate’, Matt. You’re trash that is willingly throwing away his life. I tried to help you, but you didn’t want help.”
Matt punched him in the same spot he’d hit him earlier and Heero gladly allowed the darkness to pull him under.
-----
“Treize.”
He turned to the front desk to see Melody waving the phone. “It’s Alex.”
He grabbed the phone. “What is it?”
“Just saw Eric and Matt head to the elevator on the cameras.”
“Shit. Call Security and the police. I’m heading up.”
Three men stepped into the elevator on the second floor. “Are we sure they went up to the penthouse?”
Treize pursed his lips. “Where else would they go?”
They reached the penthouse and Treize felt his heart plummet. Heero lay on the floor, blood oozing from a gash on the right side of his forehead. Eric and Matt were yelling at each other.
“That wasn’t part of the plan!” Eric yelled.
“What? You thought he’d just hand over the money?”
“Enough!” They looked to Treize and the security guards and both froze. “Take Matt downstairs to my office.” He kept an eye on Eric as he knelt by Heero. “Haven’t you two hurt him enough already?”
Eric swallowed. “I didn’t want this to happen.”
He sighed. “I’m giving you one chance. Get the hell away from Matt, go to rehab, and never contact Heero again; and charges won’t be pressed. Do I make myself clear?”
The younger man nodded. “I’m sorry.”
“Get out.” He looked down to Heero, turning his boss’s head slightly to get a good look at the gash. A security guard came over with a wet cloth and Treize pressed it to the wound.
Heero groaned softly and his eyes fluttered open. He fought to focus on pale blue eyes. “Treize.”
“Just lie still. I’m going to call for an ambulance.”
“No. Call Sally.”
Treize didn’t really like it but looked to the remaining guard and nodded. The man left the room and he looked back down to his young boss. “I’m sorry they got through security.”
He lifted a shaky hand to Treize’s hand and the cloth over the gash. “Where are Matt and Eric?”
“I let Eric go. Matt’s restrained in my office.”
He was silent for a moment. “Let Matt go, too.”
“But-“
“If I have him arrested he’ll drag me through the mud. I can’t have a scandal like that. I can’t do that to my father.”
A moment later, Duo and Wufei rushed in. “What happened?” the brunet asked as they knelt beside Heero.
“Matt and Eric,” Treize said darkly.
Wufei gently studied the gash on Heero’s forehead. “This needs stitches.”
Duo snorted. “That all you’ve got to say? What about those bastards who-“
“I’m more concerned with Heero right now than I am them.”
Heero swallowed at the level of emotion in their voices. “I’ll be fine. My doctor is on her way to stitch me up.”
Wufei pressed the cloth back to the wound and placed a soft kiss on Heero’s lips. “Love you.”
Heero closed his eyes. “You, too.” He felt a squeeze to his hand and looked to Duo, whose expression had shifted from anger to fear. “I’ll be fine, Duo. I promise.”
The braided man nodded just as the door opened and a woman with honey colored braids walked into the penthouse. Wufei moved out of the way so she could look at the gash.
“I bet you’ve got a nasty headache.”
He snorted. “Your bedside manner hasn’t improved, I see.”
She chuckled. “Get him on the sofa.”
Heero tried to voice his argument when Duo and Treize lifted him from the floor. “I’m not an invalid.”
Duo kissed him softly as he settled his lover on the sofa. “Humor me.”
He, Wufei, and Treize stood back while Sally cleaned the gash, numbed the skin, and quickly stitched it; all the while keeping up small talk.
“How’s your father?”
“Doing well. I just saw him earlier today.”
“I didn’t realize he was in town.”
“Weekend visit.”
She was silent for a moment. “Your new pets are much prettier than the last ones.”
Wufei glared. “Who are you calling ‘pets’, woman?”
She smirked. “Don’t get your panties in a twist. It’s just a joke.”
“I love them, Sally. Don’t offend them.”
She grunted. “You loved the bastards that did this to you, too.”
He flinched. “I guess.”
“Sally,” Treize said through his teeth, “those bastards didn’t love him like these two do.”
She looked to the other Asian and braided man, studying them intently before a small smile took her lips. She looked back to Heero, finished stitching him up, and applied a bandage to the closed wound. “I’m happy for you.”
He tried to sit up but only managed to make the room spin and quickly lay back down again. Sally snorted. “Stubborn.” She crossed to Duo and Wufei, holding up bottle and speaking softly. “This is for the pain and he won’t take it willingly. Either find a way to convince him or hide it in his food.”
Duo nodded and took the bottle. “Thank you.”
She laughed. “He can come across as a cold son of a bitch, but we all know how sweet he is.”
“Get out!” Heero called from the sofa. “And take Treize with you.”
They chuckled softly. Treize looked down at his boss. “I’ll take care of the banquet. You just get some rest.”
He nodded as they left and closed his eyes. The perfectly good day had gone to utter shit.
“Heero?”
He took a slow breath. Why did it always seem like as soon as life was going good something bad had to happen? He thought the shit with Matt and Eric was over. Sally was right; he’d loved them. He’d loved his parents, too. But loving someone didn’t guarantee that they’d love you back. It only gave them power over you.
He opened his eyes when a gentle palm cupped his cheek and looked up into unfathomable obsidian eyes.
“Come on,” Wufei whispered.
He rose slowly from the sofa and allowed his smaller lover to lead him to the bedroom. He said nothing as he was stripped to his boxers and laid on the soft sheets, a cool compress held to the gash over his temple.
“We’re not them.”
He sucked in a breath. “I know.”
“Here,” Wufei touched his forehead, “I know you know, but the pain is great here.” He moved to lay his palm over Heero’s chest. “We’ll prove it to you.”
“You shouldn’t have to.”
“No, we shouldn’t. But that isn’t our fault or yours. It’s the fault of those who hurt you.” He smiled. “And we gladly accept the challenge of earning your trust.”
Heero’s eyes stung and he closed them against the sudden burn. “I don’t deserve either of you.”
“It ain’t about deserving, babe.” Duo sat on the edge of the bed.
Heero looked to the braided man. “You’re too good for me.”
Duo snorted. “No. We’re all perfect for each other, because we love each other.” He held up a piece of tinfoil with a smirk and began twisting it. “See, the three of us have had fucked up experiences and hard lives. We’ve had to make the best of the hands that have been dealt to us.” He twisted the foil and grabbed Wufei’s left hand, slipping the newly formed circle on the ring finger.
He tore off another piece of foil and twisted it. “And we’ve come out on top. Not because of money or fame; but because of love.” He slid another foil ring on Heero’s ring finger on his left hand. He licked his lip as he gazed at the two Asians. “I love both of you and want to be with y’all for the rest of my life.” He lifted both of their hands to kiss the ring fingers bearing his gift. “This is my promise to love you, Wufei and Heero, for the rest of my life.”
Heero fought hard for his next breath. “I… gods, please, I don’t want to doubt you, but-“
Gentle fingers fell to his lips and Duo smiled softly. “I know you don’t want to doubt us, and we’ll prove to you that you don’t have to. Just give us time. That’s all we ask.” He leaned down to lay a soft kiss to Heero’s lips. “A few months aren’t enough to wipe away years of betrayal; we know that.”
He turned and grabbed the bottle of water and pills that he’d brought with him. “Now, take on of these for me.” Heero sighed but took the pill. Duo set the water on the night stand. “Get some rest.”
Heero couldn’t stop the small smile and curved his lips as his lovers curled around him. He wasn’t secure yet, but knowing they wouldn’t give up eased his mood and let him fall into a peaceful sleep.
TBC….
A/N I know, I know. I suck at getting regular updates and there was no nooky. I tried!! But Heero, Duo and Wufei just would not cooperate. :-/ A big thanks to Aimee for helping me come up with the idea of the tinfoil promise rings!
