“Stop pacing,” Vegeta said, annoyed. “I’ve hurt myself worse than this training.”
Goku snorted and continued his course around the bedroom, looking at the floor, the walls, anything but Vegeta. Seeing his injuries just made him too upset. “That’s not exactly comforting.”
He’d started this pacing after getting Vegeta out of his clothes and settled into bed. Vegeta wasn’t big on coddling - or even properly treating - non life-threatening injuries, but one look at the guilt in Goku’s eyes and Vegeta had shut up and let his mate bandage him up. It was true, Vegeta had seen far worse injuries in the time Goku had known him but not like this, because they’d both allowed it to happen.
Goku growled in frustration. The pacing was a poor replacement for the feeling of his fist driving into flesh, of power surging through him as he defeated a worthy opponent. Goku had never been in the middle of something this big that he couldn’t immediately punch his way out of before, and he hated it. This waiting game seemed interminable.
He and Vegeta both had resisted fighting together for so long it amazed him that it was happening even now. When they fought side by side the sensation of near-invincibility was a drug-like high. They could take Beerus, Goku could feel it. The fact that he was a god didn’t matter anymore to him. He had hurt Vegeta. He had to suffer for that offense and Goku had never been one for ‘later’ over ‘now,’ it was his way.
Vegeta’s voice cut through Goku’s thoughts. “Come here.”
“I’m fine,” Goku growled before returning to his pacing and Vegeta rolled his eyes.
//Kakarot.//
“What?!”
//Don’t make me beg.//
...Oh. Sorry.
As difficult as Beerus’ actions had been for him to deal with, Vegeta was the one who’d had to go through it. Goku kicked himself out of his brooding and slid into bed as well. After a moment’s hesitation and a smirk Goku pulled Vegeta’s underwear off before laying down and resting his head on his mate’s stomach.
“Is that really necessary?”
Goku laughed, happily noting nothing more than amusement in Vegeta’s tone, though he glared down at him as he nuzzled into bare skin. “It’s always necessary. Does this hurt too much?”
“No, it’s perfect.”
Vegeta’s fingers stroked through his hair and Goku relaxed a little, but his nerves would be long in calming. “I thought Whis was your friend. How could he let Beerus do that to you?”
Vegeta grimaced, speaking aloud and over their bond at the same time, knowing full well which voice Goku would focus on. “They know better than we do. Whatever they think is best goes.” //Quietly. Things are getting dangerous and now that Beerus is awake we don’t know how much privacy we really have. Whis’ hands are tied. I don’t think he has a choice.//
“If you say so.” Goku pushed himself up, eyeing Vegeta sharply. I don’t know if I believe that. He’s using us for something, you know it as well as I do. Do you still trust him?
//Yes. He’s been doing what he can to push us in the right direction. I think finally understand where he’s going with all this. Look at what he’s been teaching us. How to fight as a team, how to act and react as one without thinking about it. And Whis didn’t say we couldn’t fuse, he just said that the fusion dance wouldn’t work.//
That’s what it’s about, isn’t it?
//Yes. Potara fusion needs the earrings to make it work, and we couldn’t un-fuse on our own. The dance has a time limit. I think we can do it on our own with no restrictions, no drawbacks. Look, we can feel each other on three levels, mental, physical and emotional. We’ve never fully opened ourselves to all of them at the same time. I don’t know exactly what would happen but I think that’s what Beerus wants to prevent.//
Goku’s amazement made Vegeta smile a little. A growing eagerness followed hot on its heels, and Vegeta couldn’t fault him for it one bit. If he was correct their power would be immense, maybe even more than enough to rival Beerus.
So what do we do? There’s no real way to test that. If you’re right Beerus will feel power like that no matter where in the universe we go. I have a feeling he’ll come after us as soon as he knows we can do it.
//There isn’t much we can do with that theory right now, and you’re right about Beerus coming after us. But I realized today that Beerus isn’t the real problem.//
Explain.
//He’s arrogant, but not stupid enough to totally drop his guard around us. Eventually he’ll figure out we’ve been hiding what we can really do, and as soon as that happens he won’t chance being beaten by us. He’ll just order Whis to destroy us. Whis takes us more seriously every time we fight against him during training but I doubt we’re strong enough for that fight yet.//
Goku laid his head back down, thinking. And while we’re busy with Whis Beerus will probably go after Earth just for spite. If we seriously went after Beerus we’d have to split him and Whis up before we did it. But how?
//We’re just going to have wait for the chance. In the meantime, we keep getting stronger. But… you’re talking about going up against a god. It’s not like you, Kakarot.//
...I know, and I’m not taking this lightly. There’s something really, really wrong about Beerus. I can’t explain it.
Vegeta grimaced, hearing Goku speak this way didn’t sit too well with him. //Let’s not make any big decisions until we hear what Oracle has to say.//
Agreed.
____________________________________________________________________________
Vegeta woke a little later than he usually did. He heard muffled speech coming from the other room and rose, stretching. He was sore, but nothing that would keep him in bed so he got up, peeled off his bandages, got dressed and made his way out. True to Whis’ word he heard Oracle and Goku talking and laughing over breakfast.
He flicked Goku in the back of the head as he sat down.
“Ouch! What was that for?”
“Not waking me up. Pass me whatever that meat is.”
Goku pouted but did as asked and Oracle chuckled, as always extremely tickled by Beerus’ newest acquisitions.
Never one to mince words, especially with so much hinging on answers he didn’t have, after a few bites Vegeta started asking questions. “Do you know anything about the Saiyan race? Our history?”
“I do!” Oracle answered happily. “I’m not nearly as old as Beerus or Whis but Whis brought me here not long before their first contact with your people.”
Goku frowned. Do you think it’s safe to talk now?
//Yes. I’m willing to bet that Whis is keeping Beerus busy so we can have some privacy.//
“How does Beerus know so much about us?”
“He visited both Saiyan homeworlds on many, many occasions. Your race was still very young when he discovered you. Saiyans evolve and adapt faster than any species Beerus had ever seen, changes that take ten generations with some other race took two or three at most with yours. You’ve got to understand, to beings with a lifespan as long as his it was like he had found a new toy in your race. Your ancestors interested him and as you might have noticed he likes to bring interesting things back here. Helps keep him from getting too bored, he says. Eventually he kept at least one of you here during his waking periods.
“At first he looked for strength alone in his ‘specimens,’ and since your people have always loved to fight it was easy to find the strongest. I don’t know when he got it in his head to try this with sentients, but… when warriors with incredibly high power levels started popping up here and there Beerus would have them brought back here to breed for stronger offspring. It worked at first and he was happy to have more challenging opponents to play with. But after a few generations of that the increased aggression made the offspring too unstable to be entertaining for long. They were… really scary.”
Goku’s jaw dropped. Gohan.
//My gods…//
I can’t believe what we’re hearing… How did Beerus get away with this, why didn’t anyone stop him?!
//Who? Even if the Kais knew or cared about what he was doing, they’re afraid of him just like everyone else in this universe.//
“Beerus ended up sending them back home. All that aggression bred into your people and was bad for them too. Things fell apart for a long time on Planet Sadla because of all the fighting. Even Whis felt bad about it, and that’s saying a lot. Beerus got frustrated that his project wasn’t working the way he wanted and said he was done with the Saiyans for good.
“But Whis kept checking in every once in a while; he was sure the Saiyans would self-destruct from all of Beerus’ tampering and thought someone should bear witness. Imagine how surprised he was when your ancestors started showing up, Vegeta! Child-bearing males, who would have thought! Things got better after that. After a few hundred years the hyper-aggressives were gone, bred into dormancy, but that’s just a guess.”
Oracle rubbed her chin, gazing off into nothing as she thought over her theory. Goku was content to let her, at least for a moment. Is she right?
//I think so. Gohan said he was… drawn to me, even as a child. And his aggressiveness passed down to Pan, but not to his children by me. Whenever he… attacked me, once I couldn’t fight him anymore I could feel him calming down. Assuming I’d been willing to be his mate I would have stabilized both his genes and his more violent behavior.//
But even if you’d been free and willing to mate with him he would have burned through you in a matter of years if not months, Vegeta.
//You’re forgetting the nature of Saiyan bonding. He would have drained me quickly, but when I died he would have died with me. It’s foolproof.//
Oracle shook herself from her thoughts with a smile. “Sorry. Where was I? Right. When Beerus found out that things were turning around with your people he got interested again, especially after finding that once bonded the child-bearers and their mates were just as strong as the fighters Beerus had been so fond of, and stable to boot. He started bringing pairs here and things went well for him. At least, until the accident.”
Her fins drooped and Goku swallowed hard. “Oracle? What happened, please. We need to know.”
She didn’t want to tell them this part, but Whis had asked her to answer all of their questions. She sighed heavily before continuing. “Your people have always loved to fight, Goku. It seemed like a perfect fit for Beerus… he would spar with them when he got bored, which he did often. It usually went fine but one day there was an accident while Beerus was playing with them. They were both almost killed, and one of their children took a blast full-on and died instantly. Whis couldn’t do-over time like he can now so there was nothing even he could do. He was able to heal the parents before they died from their injuries but they were furious! They attacked Beerus and that was the first time I ever saw your people transform. They didn’t fight as one, they were one, I’ve never seen anything like it. The battle was devastating, they lost but almost half the planet was destroyed before Beerus could take them down.
“Whis was able to save the last three children from Beerus’ wrath, but he wanted to destroy Planet Sadla and all your people along with it.” At Goku’s stricken expression she added, “I know, it’s not fair that he blamed them, but few things are fair, especially here.
“Whis ‘got lost’ a few times on the way back to Planet Sadla, and that gave Beerus time to cool down a bit and realize he’d be smashing his favorite toys. Instead of wiping out all of the Saiyans he settled for destroying the existing mated child-bearers, not that there were many, and made a contract with the ruling elders that no male child-bearer would ever be allowed to wield power on his own again once mated.”
Vegeta’s mind reeled and he struggled to focus on the chance to get all the information he could. Beerus had meddled in his people’s development on a massive scale; it was beyond anything he’d ever imagined. “What about…” he stopped, cleared a throat too dry to speak and tried again. “What about the children Whis saved?”
“He took them home. They were old enough to remember their parents’ ascension. Whis kept an eye on them when Beerus wasn’t looking and in their adult years they were able to duplicate it to become the first Super Saiyans your people had seen. Once they knew how to do it more followed, usually offspring of the male child-bearers even though Beerus had effectively hobbled them. Your people had adapted again, they were getting stronger and starting to realize their potential but Beerus wasn’t happy about it. He never forgave the Saiyans for what happened here, and he wanted them kept weak as a precaution and as punishment for the attack.
“So he made an official visit and demanded all the child-bearers be wiped out or he’d destroy the planet. By that time there was a planet-wide monarchy with a queen in charge. She couldn’t bring herself to kill her own fathers so she lied, spread false rumors, did whatever she had to do to turn the people against your kind and let them do the work. Things started to fall apart again and it appeased Beerus for a while. I’m pretty sure he thought your people would finally destroy yourselves, but when it didn’t happen and they recovered yet again Beerus’ anger finally won out over your usefulness to him. He was ready to destroy the Saiyan race once and for all. But by the time he made the decision it was time for him to sleep again.”
The delicate teacup Vegeta had been holding crunched into pieces as his hand spasmed around it.
Vegeta?
//It can’t be...// “Oracle. Did Beerus and Freeza know each other back then?”
She looked away from Vegeta, fins drooping again and he gasped, already sure of her answer.
“He did, Beerus stumbled across Freeza when he was young,” Oracle confirmed sadly. “He had Beerus’ support from early on in his ‘career.’ It’s a big universe, how do you think Freeza found the strongest races for his armies? It certainly wasn’t luck. Beerus pointed him toward the planets with the best fighters, the best resources… he liked seeing what Freeza did with them. He was the one who pointed your people out to Freeza in the first place.”
Something cold grabbed hold of Vegeta’s heart. “He told Freeza about the Super Saiyans, that we’d eventually become strong enough to overthrow him. He let Freeza do the job for him.”
At Oracle’s sad nod Vegeta’s fists came down on the table so hard it broke, sending the remnants of breakfast crashing to the floor. Beerus. Fucking Beerus. It had been him all along. Tampering with his people’s development as though he were some champion dog breeder, all to keep them at just the right stage in their evolution to be the perfectly entertaining pets.
The rage that boiled up inside Vegeta was blinding. He’d taught himself how to handle it when he was a child, how to bleed it off, how to conserve the energy for a time when it was needed.
But Goku had never had the need for such knowledge.
His attention shot to his mate when he felt Goku’s energies beginning to flare dangerously. “Control it, Kakarot!” Vegeta yelled, but it kept building. Cursing, he powered his way into his mate’s mind and held him in place to keep him from charging off. He tried to contain the building ki so Beerus wouldn’t notice it but it was multiplying rapidly.
A concerned Oracle backed up and peeked out from behind a doorway. Whis couldn’t help; he was with Beerus. Vegeta was going to have to find some way to handle this between them on their own.
//Kakarot, calm the fuck down! We need a plan, acting without one could get us killed and leave our children in danger!//
No, let me go Vegeta! He has to pay for what he’s done. We can kill him!
//I know we can, but that’s not the point! He’s not the one we have to worry about! Whis is-//
I don’t care! Let me go, Vegeta. NOW!!
Vegeta struggled to hold Goku, struggled to keep from just obeying him. Goku just couldn’t see all the ways this could go wrong, how much danger Earth and their children were in if they didn’t handle this right, he needed to see it… With a growl Vegeta kicked down every barrier between them and shoved their minds into one another by pure force of will.
Time slowed for them as information was exchanged faster even than the speed of thought, at the speed of knowing. If one of them thought something, they both did. If one of them knew something, they both did, and now they both knew they couldn’t confront Beerus, not yet, not until they could get him away from Whis and catch him off guard. But the time was approaching rapidly, and only then would they rip his gods-damned heart out for his treatment of their people.
Their bodies were beginning to sync as well and they knew their power was spiking beyond what they could keep masked, knew that they were right.
This was the beginning of fusion, true fusion.
They would have to separate for now. Regretfully, that which was Vegeta returned to its shell, and that which was Goku returned to its shell as well.
“Kakarot? Are you all right?” The words felt strange now, so slow.
Goku frowned. “Yeah, I get it, I’ll wait. But… Vegeta, that was amazing. It was what Whis is always saying, ‘one mind, two bodies.’ We were…” he fumbled for the words.
Forgotten in the crisis, Oracle piped in. “You were one person. Your power was enormous… I’ve only seen it once before.”
It was a taste of power Vegeta and Goku both had always dreamed of and strived for. And now it was so close it was difficult to think about anything else but they might not have another chance to get their questions answered. Thankfully, Vegeta thought, there wasn’t much more he needed to know. “Oracle, two more questions. What happens if Beerus is defeated; who takes his place?”
Oracle tapped a fin against her head. “Mmm… That’s a little complicated. Normally it’s a position appointed by the King of the Twelve Universes. But there’s an unwritten rule: if the God of Destruction for any universe is killed, the position automatically goes to the one that killed him. It’s the same as your people, right? ‘To become the King, you must defeat the King.’”
Even Goku recognized that phrase from Vegeta’s memories. If they defeated Beerus, killed Beerus, they would take his place.
It was something Vegeta had already considered, so it wasn’t as much of a shock to him as it was to Goku. “I’m going to ask you something difficult, and I ask you to trust me with the truth. Can we beat Whis?”
She shook her head thoughtfully. “I don’t know. Even I’ve never seen him go all out. But if you can complete that fusion and combine it with your new form, you’ll be stronger than anything I’ve seen in thousands of years.”
____________________________________________________________________________
“I said no. We’ll find another way.”
Goku watched Vegeta straightening up the mess he’d made of their breakfast, too preoccupied to help. They were both still processing the scope of Beerus’ interference in Saiyan development, but what wouldn’t leave Goku now was that intense sharing they’d experienced.
Being so close with Vegeta, being inside each other’s minds had been overwhelming and now he felt a sense of loss that was almost painful. Goku wanted to end this disagreement by throwing Vegeta down, crawling inside him and never coming out. From the way Vegeta’s tail was twining and twisting through the air behind him he felt much the same way and Goku’s attentions wouldn’t be unwelcome.
But this was too important to let go. While the duties of a destroyer god fit in pretty seamlessly with Vegeta’s past employment history, it ran counter to everything Goku believed in, or so Vegeta thought. He was understandably hesitant to trust in his mate’s enthusiasm for the idea.
“I know you want it, Vegeta. I can feel it! So why not?” For millions of years now mindless cruelty has rewarded just because ‘good’ wasn’t interesting enough. I know we can’t right all the wrongs, but we can at least change that, start repairing the damage Beerus has done to our universe.
//You know very well ‘why not!’ We are talking about wiping out at the very least hundreds of thousands of beings at a time. Even if the inhabitants are evil - and not all of the planets we’d have to destroy would be that way - you can’t ever be sure you haven’t killed someone good as well. For fuck’s sake Kakarot, you wouldn’t even kill Freeza when you had the chance. And yes, I know that the concept of killing isn't as abhorrent to you as it once was, but this… It’s too much for you to handle. Now drop it, I don’t want to hear this anymore!//
Goku frowned. Well too bad. You’re not giving me enough credit, Vegeta. Back then I didn’t understand how generally fucked-up the universe could be, and I didn’t really believe in true evil. I’m not the same person I was then. I can do this.
Vegeta swung around to stare at him, and all Goku could sense from him was dismay. //Have I really changed you this much?//
Goku stopped for a moment to think and Vegeta waited anxiously. He understood Vegeta’s fear of overshadowing his will, of tainting his innocent nature but it hadn’t happened here, or at all. Finally he answered honestly. Some, yes. But it wasn’t all you. Finding out what you’ve been through, and what life is like out there… it pissed me off, made me see things differently. I think… I’ve changed you far more than you’ve changed me.
Vegeta’s relief was palpable, but he was still unconvinced. “If we do this… There’s a real chance you’d never sleep well again.”
“Yes, I will. I won’t sleep well if we don’t do this because I’ll always be afraid of what someone else might do in our place.” Our children and their children… with their strength history could repeat itself and they’d be tools again for someone stronger. Vegeta, we can give them a fighting chance to bring our race back, to thrive and be what we were meant to be, not what Beerus made us into. That means just as much to me as it does to you.
Vegeta frowned, and Goku could feel him pushing against his mind. He opened to that sure touch, certain of what it would find.
It was their second child together, Goku’s only daughter, Húlu. They were two of a kind, something that hadn’t escaped Vegeta’s notice even in the womb. Even now when he stretched his mind across light years uncounted to speak with their children, he endured - with longsuffering amusement - when Goku and Húlu shoved his presence aside in their enthusiasm to speak with each other again.
With uncharacteristic embarrassment, Goku said, I’ve always wanted a girl.
And Vegeta understood, embracing his mate and soothing away the embarrassment, because it was nothing at all to be ashamed of.
For the most part, it was for her sake that Goku was willing to go so far. He loved his other children no less, and was equally proud of them all. But… she was his little girl. She was no hothouse flower though; in terms of pure physicality she was the strongest of all the Saiyan children, and she wielded her power as effortlessly as either of her fathers. Not that it mattered to Goku. Her adoptive parents were ‘Mama’ and ‘Papa,’ and she loved them dearly.
But Goku was ‘Daddy.’ And her Daddy would go to any lengths to protect and ensure his little girl’s future. Do you see now, Vegeta?
Vegeta withdrew with a sigh. “I see. I haven’t changed you as much as I feared. You’re still a soft-hearted idiot.” The words would have stung if not for the soothing hand in Goku’s hair, the fondness he felt over their bond. “But it won’t be easy, especially at first.” //Assuming we can work the major miracle of taking out Beerus without dying or burning down the entire universe.//
Goku just smiled and pulled him close. We can do anything together. I really believe that. “I won’t be alone. You’ll help me through it,” he said, nuzzling into Vegeta’s neck.
His mate snorted, arching into the contact and wrapping his tail around Goku’s thigh. “That’ll be the day.”
Goku only chuckled, dragging Vegeta into the bedroom and tugging off his clothes as he went. It was no easy task to intercept Vegeta’s wandering hands as they tried to return the favor, but he did it deftly. By the time Goku gave him a shove onto the bed Vegeta was quite gloriously nude. He stopped to admire his handiwork and Vegeta smirked as something occurred to him. “You get off on having me naked.”
“Actually I get off on taking your clothes off you and leaving mine on. But close enough,” Goku admitted, bending to the task of tactile appreciation.
Vegeta groaned. “All that time spent trying to convince you to embrace your Saiyan heritage and all I had to do to turn you was let you bed me. I’ve created a monster.”
Goku chuckled as he nipped his way up Vegeta’s body. His overriding desire was to regain at least some of that oneness they’d shared earlier, and he wasted little time in attacking Vegeta’s neck. His fingers found his mate’s hard length and began to stroke him firmly, enjoying the feel of him bucking and rolling into his body seeking release.
Somewhere amongst the moans and shaky breaths Goku heard something he’d been waiting to hear. In fact, he pulled his head away to find his mate’s eyes, not quite believing what he’d heard.
What?
//I… miss having you inside me. I don’t want to wait until I’m in heat again.//
Goku’s eyes went wide. “Is that… what you want?”
Vegeta swallowed hard before nodding. There was nervousness, but his fear of the act was gone. It wasn’t a replacement for the link they’d shared earlier, but it was as close as they could get.
Goku had only been waiting for Vegeta to actually say it. He’d dreamed about this, fantasized and planned every single detail, and now that the moment was here he found he was getting anxious. “Stay right there. Don’t move. I’ll be right back.”
As Goku tore out of the room like his tail was on fire Vegeta murmured, “Not exactly the response I was expecting…”
Halfway down the hall Goku remembered with a curse that he could Transmit. A few seconds later he was back in bed with a bewildered Vegeta.
“What the hell was that about?”
“I just needed to get something to ease the way. This has to be good.”
“Slow down. Are you… nervous? What do you have to be nervous about? You do know how low the bar is here, right?”
Vegeta didn’t say anything but the thoughts were so vivid Goku couldn’t help hearing it, that as long as he wasn’t lying in a pool of his own blood by the time this was over he’d happily call it a ‘win.’ Goku balked at the horrible thought. “Oh, Vegeta, I don’t want to not hurt you as badly as you’ve been hurt before. You deserve so much better than that, it’s important to me.”
Goku wanted to take it back as soon as he said it, afraid it sounded too cheesy for what he really felt but Vegeta just stared at him unbelieving. Goku knew sometimes his gentle nature weighed on Vegeta, that he felt somehow undeserving but that knowledge just strengthened his resolve to change his mate’s mind.
Tell me to stop and I’ll stop, no matter what. I mean it, Vegeta.
He’d accepted that this was important to Goku, but still didn’t completely understand why Goku had been willing to go so far for him. //...Why?//
Goku smiled that sweet smile that had always made Vegeta wonder what he’d done to deserve it. We’ve been over this. You tell me.
//Kakarot...//
Goku began to nibble his way back down Vegeta’s body. I’m serious. I want to hear you say it.
Vegeta moaned as Goku’s fingers began to wander over his skin. “Because… you can. And because you… want to.”
Hell yes I want to. He reached his destination and licked long and slow along the eager column of flesh so impatient for his attention. While he kept Vegeta distracted with his tongue he slicked his fingers and felt for that hot, tight entrance he’d been so desperate to return home to ever since the day they’d bonded.

At the sound of the author’s head hitting the keyboard, it will be 3AM… Zzzzzzzzzzz….
ZeoViolet: Bwahahaaa! It would be so much easier if the house had the broken bones, I’d certainly be doing less waiting on people and getting a little sleep. XD Thanks for taking the time with so much going on. I’m sorry for your troubles, definitely sending good thoughts your family’s way.
Ulrike: Yep, Vegeta’s in trouble. Again. Ummm… I always hurt the ones I love? Did that sound unapologetic? :) I do have the Universe 7 pair in mind for how they’re involved, but I’m not sure if I’ll get there. I am, quite frankly, amazed and incredibly grateful for how long readers have stuck with me on this story! But I’m afraid of dragging it on too long, it’s by far the longest thing I’ve ever written!
