Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…

“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”

Part 24

The next four days passed quietly and life seemed to be settling back down to as normal as it could get with Duo around. That’s not to say that Duo himself was disruptive, but things just seemed to happen around Duo.

Heero still caught Quatre gazing at Duo in open adulation, and the blonde always blushed and hurriedly turned his attention back to whatever task he was doing, but Heero would just smile slightly. Duo made no more overt advances towards Quatre, knowing that the blonde was as ready as he would ever be. Any moves on Duo's part now would only be overkill. Still, Duo would flirt mildly with him from a distance.

On Friday, after spending the day with Simon, Heero announced that he would be going out of town on a job, leaving Sunday night to be gone until Wednesday morning. Duo, of course, made all of the appropriate protests and pouted prettily, all of which earned him a trip to the mall the next day to appease his bruised feelings at being left alone for so long. They were out until late that night, as shopping escalated into dinner and a movie afterwards. Quatre and Trowa didn’t see them until early Sunday afternoon.

“You spoil him too much, Yuy,” Trowa commented as Duo proceeded to give them a fashion show of everything Heero had bought him the day before.

“I know,” Heero replied, “but I just can’t resist that pout. And he’s always so happy after shopping, and a happy Duo is a very appreciative Duo in bed at night.”

“Too much info, there, Yuy,” Trowa protested. “I did not need to know that.”

“You’d have heard it anyway,” exclaimed Quatre. “Everybody hears Duo when he’s happy.”

“What about me?” queried Duo, returning in yet another revealing outfit.

“I just said that everybody knows when you are happy,” replied Quatre. “You don’t bother to hide your emotions.”

“No, 'cos that’s too much work,” said Duo airily as he twirled around happily. “Hiding emotions is too much like lying and I never lie.”

“No, that’s one thing you never did, lie about anything,” agreed Heero, running an appreciative eye over his lover’s lithe figure. Then he stood abruptly and took Duo's hand. “I need to pack for my trip. WuFei is going to pick me at 8:00 to take me to the terminal. Come help me pack, babe.”

“Sure,” agreed Duo, a little of the happiness trading places with some worry. Heero slid an arm around his waist and pulled him close as the two walked away.

“He’s one complicated person,” Quatre commented after the two had departed. “I’m not sure how Heero does it, living with him.”

“Yuy likes a challenge,” Trowa replied. “That’s probably the biggest challenge he’s ever had, not killing Duo at some point in their relationship.”

“Yeah,” agreed Quatre. “But they really do love each other a lot. I’m glad they have each other. Hey, let’s watch a movie, okay?”

“Sure,” Trowa grinned at the sudden shift in the conversation. Duo wasn’t the only one with a mercurial temperament. But then, Trowa loved a challenge as well. “What do you want to watch?”

While You Were Sleeping,” came the prompt response, which got a groan from Trowa. But Quatre snuggled up against him cutely, and all of his protests melted away. Chick-flick it was.

Back in their room, Heero started to pull out some clothes and Duo quickly put them into his bag. Heero then carefully checked his weapons before laying them aside. Finished with those tasks, he turned to take Duo into his arms. He kissed him gently then sat on the bed and held his lover in his lap, cuddling him and unplaiting his long hair.

“I want to make love to you before I go. Soft, gentle love,” Heero murmured, his lips against Duo's temple.

Duo sighed and offered his throat to his lover in acquiesce. Heero's mouth quickly found his pulse point and sucked gently, leaving behind a dark red mark. His mark on his lover’s body.

Laying Duo back on the bed, Heero stood and quickly divested himself of clothing, then stripped Duo equally as fast. But instead of touching, he simply looked, as if trying to make a mental picture of the moment.

The moment stretched on too long for Duo, however, and he reached out to the man he loved more then life itself. Heero fell into his arms, and their mouths met in a soft, gentle kiss. Hands began to touch and caress. Mouths continued the sweet kisses. Heero gently prepared Duo's body to receive him, using his hands and mouth skillfully until he had Duo writhing in desire. Just when he knew that Duo was ready to explode, he pushed his pulsing cock deep inside of his lover’s body and Duo wrapped himself around him. Heero started to move languidly, as if they had all of the time in the world.

There were no words exchanged. There was no need. They knew this song so well, this was such a familiar dance and the partners knew each other better then they knew themselves. This was what their love was all about, this endless waltz, this nameless song. They lost themselves in orgasmic bliss as the final ecstasy claimed them.

Lying panting and gasping, bodies covered in sweat and other bodily fluids, Heero was loath to move, but he knew that he needed to shower before he left and that WuFei would be there to pick him up soon. He forced himself to move away from Duo, even though Duo tried to cling to him a little longer.

“I’ve got to go, babe,” Heero said, gently disengaging, but kissing Duo to take away the sting of his words.

Duo sighed and pouted, but let him go. He started to get up, but Heero stopped him.

“No. Stay in bed. I want to remember you just this way, naked and spread out on my bed, waiting for me to come back and make love to you again,” Heero said softly, a small smile gracing his face.

“You talk like we’re never going to see each other again,” replied Duo, darkly.

“No. I know I’m going to see you soon,” said Heero. “I just don’t want to think about… things. That’s all.”

“Don’t think about that, please, 'Ro?” Duo begged. “It’s only work. It’s not something that I’m going to enjoy, you know.”

“I know. I keep telling myself that, but still…” Heero looked distressed as he sat back down on the bed.

“You know, you’ll be tuned in to me,” Duo told him. “You always are. And it’s you that I love, only you. It’s your arms that I’m going to be missing while you’re away.”

“I know. I love you, too. And I trust you,” said Heero quietly.

Those words completely undid Duo. Tears started to spill from his indigo eyes as he crawled into Heero's lap, hugging him tightly. No other words were exchanged. The simple kiss he bestowed on Heero said it all.

“I’m going to take a quick shower,” Heero said, disengaging from Duo once more.

“Come back and say good-bye?” Duo asked as Heero gathered the clothes he was planning to wear.

“Of course,” he replied with a smile and left for the bathroom. Duo heard the shower start and sighed softly to himself. He hated it when Heero had to leave him, but he knew it was necessary, especially this time. But he still didn’t did like it.

Heero emerged from the bathroom, dressed and ready to go. He lay back on the bed and held Duo close until a gentle tapping on the bedroom door let him know that WuFei had arrived. He kissed Duo once more, then silently left. All the words that they could say had already been exchanged. Now it was time for action.

Heero thought back to Saturday night as he and WuFei shared a companionable silence on the long drive to the airport.

After an early dinner, he and Duo had gone for a long walk. It was then, where there was little chance of being overheard, that he divulged all of the information that he had gotten from Simon to Duo. He gave Duo the miniaturized com link that would keep them in constant contact once the plan was set in motion, and the two worked out a plan of strategy. It was pre-arranged that something would happen that would require WuFei to ask Trowa for assistance. That would take Trowa out of the house for a short period of time. At that point, Duo would have just a brief window of opportunity to get Quatre quickly to where he needed him. Then they would wait.

They were counting on the eagerness of the viper to attack during that seemingly unguarded moment, hoping he would recall Duo's hesitation to take out Mac and believe that he could use that hesitation to his advantage.

Duo would only have split seconds to act once everything started to happen. It would be up to Heero to keep him focused.

“It’s going to be alright,” said WuFei, drawing Heero away from his musing. “Don’t over think it. You know that Duo is good. You know that he can to it. This is what you two do best.”

“I know,” answered Heero, “but it’s never easy. Even back then, knowing that he was out there alone while I was in the shadows, it was hard. And he was never in the line of fire. That’s the hardest thing.”

“He won’t be alone,” reassured WuFei. “We’ll all be just a heartbeat away.”

“But a lot can go wrong in a heartbeat,” responded Heero.

“Trust him. Have faith in him,” said WuFei. “He has trust and faith in you. You won’t let him down.”

Heero merely grunted and returned to his silent contemplation.

Finally, after what seemed a lifetime, they reached the airport. Heero picked up his ticket and got his luggage checked, then it was time to bid WuFei farewell as he entered the secured area for boarding. His flight had one brief stop and it was at that point that the show would begin, because it would not be Heero continuing the flight, but someone who looked a lot like him. Heero would be on the first flight back. Back to take care of his beloved Duo. But for now, he could only sit and wait in the cold, unfeeling terminal.

~*~

Duo lay alone in Heero's bed, cold and lonely. It always felt like this when Heero was away. His heart seemed to freeze up in his chest. He played though every last word they had shared, every last touch, everything left unsaid. A tear managed to escape, along with a plaintive sigh.

The house was dark and silent. He knew Quatre and Trowa had gone to bed about an hour ago, but he couldn’t sleep. Heero had been gone for several hours, but the flight he was booked on was a long one, so Duo knew he wouldn’t even have the comfort of texting him until morning. Feeling restless, he got up, dressed in some warm sweats and started to prowl around the quiet house.

He ended up in the atrium, where he lay back on one of the lounge chairs so that he could look at the stars. They were so cold and beautiful, like chips of sparkling diamonds haphazardly strewn across a black velvet blanket. So distant and unfeeling, still they comforted him with their very presence. He soon felt himself starting to doze.

~*~

Maria, the housekeeper, found him there, sleeping peacefully, the next morning. She liked this bright, bubbly boy who always spoke so politely to her when they met around the house. It was a shame that he would have to die, along with Master Quatre, who had always been a good boss. But when it came down to a choice between these strangers and her precious children, there was no real choice for her at all. She smiled sadly at the sleeping Duo, then want on with her work. It would all be over soon. Very soon.
