Wufei stared at his reflection. The swelling had gone down enough that he could get both eyes opened, but the dark bruising still covered most of his face. He dried his hands on a paper towel and tossed it in the trash before limping back out into the hospital room. He sat on the edge of the bed, closing his eyes momentarily as pain radiated through him.
“Are you all right?”
He looked to Quatre. “Yeah. Am I free to go, yet?”
The blond nodded and grabbed Wufei's shoes, kneeling in front of him. Wufei frowned. “I can do that.”
“I know, but it'll be easier on you if I do.”
He watched the blond with dead eyes as he slid a shoe on and laced it up. “Has he woken up again?”
Quatre stilled and then looked up slowly. “Not yet, but he will.”
Wufei sighed. “Yet.” He looked to the wall. “Why did things turn out like this? What did I do wrong?”
Quatre shook his head as he slipped the other shoe onto Wufei's foot. “You didn't do anything wrong. As for why things took the turn they did,” he sighed, “I don't know, but you're free now. You never have to see them again.”
He released a slow breath. “It's a catch 22. I don't ever want to see those assholes again... but... they're my family.”
Quatre nodded slowly and looked up to meet obsidian eyes. “So are we, aren't we? I know it's not the same... but it's something.”
Wufei watched the blond rise and released a breath. “It's more than just 'something',” he whispered.
Quatre smiled. “Good to hear.” His cell rang and he glanced at the screen before answering. “Hey.”
“Hey. You might want to get Wufei to Trowa's room.”
He frowned. “Is everything all right?”
“No, Tro's pullin' a Fei and demanding to see him. He doesn't remember Wufei coming to see him the other day.”
Quatre grinned. “We're on our way.”
“What is it?”
He pushed the wheelchair to the bed. “Trowa's asking for you.”
Wufei jumped up a little too quickly and grimaced. He gripped the arms of the chair and settled himself carefully.
“Are you all right?”
“Yeah,” he said breathlessly. “Just moved too fast.”
Quatre pushed him down the hall and Wufei's eyes widened slightly. “I didn't realize we were so close.”
“We were afraid one of you would try something rash if we told you.” He pushed Wufei into the room and Duo stepped away from the bed.
Trowa sighed in relief as he saw Wufei and held a hand out toward him. “You're all right?”
“Just bruised. They released me a few minutes ago.” He pulled Trowa's hand to his chest. “How are you feeling?”
“Hurts a bit, but it isn't too bad.”
Wufei stared into his lover's pale face. “I'm sorry.”
Trowa shook his head. “You need to learn to stop apologizing for other people's actions. The situation was completely out of your control. So no more 'sorrys'.” He took a slow breath. “Besides, my injuries from the wreck hurt a hell of a lot worse than this.”
A nurse came in with a blood pressure machine. “Goodness. Looks like you're popular today, Mr. Barton.” She wrapped the cuff around his arm and smiled to Wufei who held his free hand. “I hear you were discharged.”
“Yeah.”
She cut her eyes to the blood pressure machine before grabbing the thermometer and putting it in Trowa's mouth. Emerald eyes stayed locked on Wufei. He pulled his hand from his lover's and lightly touched Wufei's bruised cheek.
“They'll heal,” Wufei whispered.
Trowa nodded as the nurse took the thermometer out of his mouth. “Can you do me a favor?”
“Anything.”
“Get my assignments for me. I fall any further behind and I'll fail the whole semester.”
“Not a problem.” He glanced to Duo. “I thought Zechs and Heero were here.”
“They went down to the cafeteria.” He looked to his watch and frowned. “Almost two hours ago.”
******
“Don't you feel... the least bit guilty?” Zechs asked.
Heero quirked an eyebrow. “Not particularly, no.” He reattached his lips to the blond's neck.
Zechs' head fell back into the wall and he clenched his hands on the rail behind him as Heero pressed a thigh between his legs. “This would be... ah... much more... ngh... comfortable at home.”
Heero slid a hand between them to Zechs' growing length. “But it would lack the spark of danger.”
“Danger?”
“I forgot to lock the door.”
Zechs' eyes flew open. “You-” Lips pressed firmly against his own to silence him as Heero's questing hand slid into his pants. His moans were swallowed by his lover until Heero worked him to full hardness and dropped to his knees.
Zechs' hands tightened on the safety rail in the bathroom as he was swallowed into the wet heat. He slit his eyes open to watch the mouth bounce happily on his erection. Heero's eyes were closed and soft hums vibrated around Zechs' overheated length. He tried to hold down the noise, but he couldn't help himself. Heero had a way of turning him into putty in his hands... or mouth, as it were.
Heero relished the steady stream of heavy moans falling from his lover's lips. He alternated between long, slow slides up the rigid length to soft laps of his tongue to the tip until Zechs was demanding Heero let him cum.
He took him to the hilt and swallowed around him as he bobbed his head in shallow thrusts. Zechs bent forward, hair falling around them like a curtain as he came.
Pale blue eyes moved briefly to the door where a wide-eyed nurse was standing. She blushed and quickly shut the door. A small chuckle bubbled in the back of his throat, quickly turning into full laughter.
Heero frowned and raised an eyebrow. “Never had that reaction to a blow job before.”
He shook his head. “It was mind blowing... and we just scandalized some poor nurse.”
Heero glanced to the now closed door before standing. “I suppose our work here is done. We should head back to the others.”
Zechs nodded and followed Heero out of the bathroom. He quirked an eyebrow and smirked at the blushing nurse as they passed. When they reached the elevator, he snorted. “We've spent way too much time with Duo.”
“Hm.” Heero gazed at his lover a long moment. “Possibly, but at least it keeps life interesting.”
They stepped out of the elevator. “Everything about this group keeps life interesting.”
Duo folded his arms over his chest as they came into the room. “And where exactly have you two been?”
Heero smirked. “Fan service for nurse morale.”
Duo howled. “I thought I was the exhibitionist of the group.”
He shrugged and looked down to Trowa. “How are you feeling?”
“All right, all things considered.” He squeezed Wufei's hand. “Why don't you go back to the dorms? Get some real rest.”
He wanted to object, but he was exhausted, and he could tell Trowa was, too. He kissed his knuckles. “All right. I'll come back tomorrow.”
“Love you.”
“Love you, too.” Quatre wheeled him out of the room and Heero looked to Zechs. The blond smiled in understanding and kissed him softly before following Quatre and Wufei.
“As messed up as they are, I kind of envy their bond.”
Wufei grunted. “They are pretty messed up, aren't they?”
Quatre chuckled softly. “Afraid they'll corrupt you?”
He looked over his shoulder. “Too late.”
Quatre shook his head. “We're all screwed up.” Zechs and Wufei stared at him. “What?”
“What do you say, Zechs? He's the craziest of us all, right?”
“Undoubtedly.”
“And why would you say that?” Quatre asked with a quirk of his eyebrow.
“Because, out of all of us, you lead the most normal, stable, and healthiest life... but you chose to hook up with a self-proclaimed miscreant and his equally bad-ass friends.”
Quatre shrugged. “What can I say? He's a great fuck.”
Both Zechs and Wufei stared at the blond for his uncharacteristic comment. Wufei grunted a laugh. “Quatre, stop trying to screw with my perception of reality. I can't handle the Twilight Zone right now.”
He giggled, putting both Zechs and Wufei at ease. “Sorry, I heard that somewhere once and have been dying to use it ever since... for shock value, of course.”
“And you heard it from...?” Zechs asked, guessing the answer.
“Duo.”
Wufei groaned. “We've all been corrupted.”
******
“How long will they keep you?” Duo asked.
Trowa shook his head. “I don't know for sure,” he said quietly. “Not too long, I hope.”
Heero grunted. “I hate to tell you, but with a punctured lung and broken ribs, they'll keep you for at least a week. Probably a hell of a lot longer.”
Trowa took a shallow breath and punched the button to release pain meds into his system. A sound close to a whimper escaped him unintentionally. “Please...” he whispered, “take care of him... for me.”
Heero shook his head. “You're in a lot of pain, aren't you?”
His brows drew together. “No where... close to the... wreck.” He fought to focus his eyes on the Japanese man. “I don't... think.”
Duo appraised him for a moment. “Would you have really killed him?” Wide emerald eyes shot up to him. “Rich told us.”
He licked his lips. “I'd do anything to protect Wufei.”
Duo shook his head. “You're one tough son of bitch, you know that?”
“Not really. I'm too weak to go on without him, that's all.”
Heero smiled softly. “I can understand that.”
Duo rubbed the back of his neck, chuckling. “We've all been whipped.”
******
“Wufei!”
He turned from his trek to the dorms and waited for her to catch up to him. “Hi, Hilde.”
She smiled. “Hey. Your bruises are gone.”
He nodded. “After almost a month, they'd better be. I can finally talk without feeling like my face is going to fall off. What'd you need?”
“Nothing much. I just wanted to see how you were doing. We haven't had much time to talk lately.”
He gazed at the girl silently for a long moment. “Thank you, Hilde.”
She frowned. “For what?”
“If you hadn't talked to me that day, I might not have ever become curious about Trowa, and he would have taken my reaction as rejection. And you're the one who pointed out I wasn't being disciplined, but... abused.” He dropped his eyes to the ground. “In some way, you're largely responsible for me having the life I do now.” He looked back to her. “So, thank you.”
She grinned. “Wow, I never looked at it like that. I guess being a busybody comes in handy from time to time.”
Wufei smiled softly and she grinned. “If my interference caused that smile, I'll totally take the blame.” She cleared her throat. “When is Trowa getting out of the hospital?”
Wufei shook his head. “Not sure, hopefully in a few days. He's getting a little stir crazy.”
She nodded. “I can imagine. You know, this has been the most eventful school year I've ever experienced.”
Wufei grunted. “Tell me about it.”
“But some good has happened, too.”
He nodded, eyes shifting across the green as Duo came out of one of the class buildings with Quatre, arm slung over his shoulder as he whispered in his ear. Wufei smiled as he thought of his friends and lover, still amazed at the total change his life had taken.
“Yes, it has, Hilde. A lot of good.”
“Well, I gotta get to class. I'll see you later.”
He watched her run off and shook his head before going into the dorms. He went up to his floor and froze when he saw his mother standing outside his room. She looked worn and tired as she turned to face him.
“Mother, what are you doing here?”
Tears filled her eyes as she took in the fading bruises on her son's face. “I'm sorry, Wufei. I... What kind of mother watches her own son be beaten and does nothing about it?”
He swallowed. “You were hurt, too.”
She shook her head. “That doesn't excuse my inaction...” She took a breath. “The Chang family has kicked me out.”
His brows drew together and he took a step toward her. “I'm sorry. What will you do now?”
“I'm going back to Arizona. My brother and his family are taking me in.” She sniffed and dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. “He's furious that I let the abuse go on and never told him.”
Wufei nodded slowly. He'd only met them a couple of times, but his uncle seemed nice. “Good.”
“And you?” she asked. “What will you do?”
“Finish school, write some books.”
“Is he... is Trowa good to you?”
The smile that came to his lips was the sweetest and most sincere she'd ever seen. “He's the best friend and lover I could have asked for.”
She nodded, sorely regretting the fact that their separation was her own doing. They didn't feel so much like mother and son as they did mere acquaintances. “I hope one day I can get the privilege of meeting him.”
“He's still in the hospital now, otherwise I'd introduce you.”
She glanced and her watch. “I need to go, my plane leaves soon.”
He crossed to her and pulled her into a somewhat awkward embrace. Both regretted the fact that they didn't really know each other. Her arms tightened.
“I'm so glad you didn't turn out like him,” she whispered.
He swallowed passed the lump in his throat. “I'm glad we're free now.”
She nodded and pulled away. “No matter how it may seem, I do love you, son.”
He closed his eyes, her words washing over his battered soul like a balm. “I love you, too, Mother.”
She offered a weak smile before disappearing down the hall. He stood for a long moment after she'd left, part of him wondering if that had really happened. He took a breath and went into his room, dropping off his books and grabbing his keys. He drove up to the hospital and found himself outside Trowa's room, barely remembering how he got there. He heard voices and hung back for a moment.
“Just make sure to take it easy and get a lot of rest.”
“I will. Thank you.”
Wufei held his breath as he moved into the room and Trowa looked to him with a smile. “Hey. They're letting me go tomorrow.”
Wufei smiled and sat on the edge of the bed, taking Trowa's hand in his. “Glad to hear that.”
The doctor smiled at the couple. “Just make sure he takes it easy.”
Wufei nodded. “I will.” After the doctor left, Wufei's smile fell slightly and he dropped his eyes to their joined hands.
“What's wrong?”
He looked up to Trowa. “Nothing's wrong, exactly. My mother came by the dorms today.”
Trowa's brows raised. “What'd she say?”
Wufei shook his head slowly. “That she was sorry. That she felt bad for being a terrible mother... She's moving to Arizona to live with my uncle and said she hopes to meet you one day.”
Trowa tilted his head to the side. “Are you all right?”
He shrugged. “It just... made me regret the fact that I hardly know her. That when I look at her all I see is a battered shell of the woman she used to be, and I was too young to ever really know her from before.”
Trowa squeezed his hand. “It isn't too late. You'll have a chance to get to know her.”
Wufei nodded. “I'm so glad you're finally getting out of here.” He looked up. “I've missed you.”
Trowa smiled. “I've missed you, too.” He tugged Wufei's hand and he leaned over to give him a kiss, which rapidly heated. That was another thing Wufei had missed. The last time they were unable to be physical, he could at least lay in Trowa's arms. But the weeks Trowa had been in the hospital had proven to Wufei exactly how much he... desired the other man.
“Aw, young love.”
Wufei pulled from the kiss and looked over his shoulder to Quatre and Duo, Heero and Zechs behind them. He grunted and sat up. “Like you guys are any better,” he muttered.
“Oh, no, we're a lot worse,” Duo said with a grin as he and Quatre produced bags full of fast food.
Trowa eyed them hungrily. “If you didn't get something for me, you can damn well leave.”
Duo laughed and dropped a burger in his lap as Zechs handed over a bottle of water. Trowa lifted the burger and unwrapped the paper as if he were a starving man given his last meal. It was obvious ten minutes later that no matter what his mind said, his stomach would only allow half of the burger to reside there. But he didn't mind in the least. It was the first 'real' food he'd had in almost a month that wasn't liquid and didn't taste like cardboard.
Wufei watched his lover savor every bite, enjoying the fact that the lean man gave into something so frivolous as a burger as if it were filet mignon. “Taste good?”
Trowa hummed softly. “You have no idea.”
He grimaced slightly. “Yeah, I do.”
Emerald eyes widened. “I'm sorry. I didn't-”
“Figure of speech.” He put his fingertips over the full lips. “I get that. You have no reason to apologize.”
Trowa relaxed slightly. “Do me a huge favor?”
Wufei smiled. “Anything.”
Trowa yanked him down and whispered in his ear. “Go buy the biggest tube of lube you can find. I don't care if it's me who can't walk for a week after I get out of here... but I need you.”
Wufei blushed and nodded as he burrowed himself into Trowa's chest cautiously. “Whatever you need.”
