Distance
Beerus watched Whis and Goku leaving, more than a little surprised that Goku had left at all, under threat or no. ‘He must have been even more of an idiot than I gave him credit for,’ Beerus thought, partly in disgust. No mated pair would have allowed themselves to be separated so, and a dominant male would have died before leaving his mate alone and in heat.
A smile briefly curved his lips, remembering that if anyone would know about separating a pair like this, he would. He’d certainly tried enough times before these two came along. And now, thousands of years later he was finally successful. And now it was time to enjoy the fruits of his persistence.
Beerus yawned hugely and announced, “I’m sleepy.” He grabbed Vegeta’s ungloved hand, holding it in a firm grip when Vegeta involuntarily tried to yank his hand away. “Isn’t this how it’s done?” he asked innocently. “You and Goku almost always Transmit this way.”
Vegeta frowned, nodding through the shock of Beerus’ seemingly thoughtless intimate touch. His vision suddenly swam and for a moment Beerus seemed to darken, looming threateningly over him, leering down at him, pulling at him as his thoughts clouded over. He shook his head and the sight passed and he wondered where it had come from; it hadn’t felt like Goku but that vision definitely hadn’t been his own. Beerus was still just gripping his hand, watching him impatiently. He needed to get the god away from everyone, away from anything that might aggravate that unpredictable temper but the concentration necessary for Transmission kept eluding him. Too much was happening around and inside him.
Piccolo had been watching the proceedings in shock and growing fury. Vegeta, normally so coldly tactical no matter the situation had blindly jerked away from Beerus without thought, eyes wide and unfocused. It didn’t take him long to come back to himself but it was clearly a struggle.
“Why the hell would Goku leave him in this shape?” Piccolo murmured angrily to Gohan under his breath.
“There’s a bigger game being played here,” Gohan said just as quietly, seething in his own skin both from the effect of Vegeta’s scent and from his own anger at what he was seeing. “Dad gave me as much as he could just before he left and I’m still piecing it together but… I don’t think he had a choice in leaving.”
Kami’s abilities as Guardian were still with Piccolo, though they were unpredictable and typically not as strong as they had been. So when sudden vision hit him it was like a brick to the head as he saw through the act Beerus was putting on. As Beerus dragged Vegeta closer, demanding once more that they leave Piccolo took a step forward without even thinking about the consequences. “Now wait a minute! You can’t just-”
Vegeta turned and snapped at him. “You’ll keep your nose out of business that doesn’t concern you.” Piccolo’s eyes widened in surprise but he knew Vegeta too well to take his ferocity at face value. Beerus seemed pleased with Vegeta’s reaction and as his attention wandered Vegeta glanced his way again, this time with a small smile that said ‘thank you’ more eloquently than words.
Beerus’ attention had wandered to Gohan whose gaze lingered on Vegeta, more possessive than anything else. That was curious. When his eyes lifted to Beerus’ own that possessiveness shifted to absolute rage as Gohan’s fists clenched at his sides. He got the sense that if he’d been anyone else Gohan would have attacked to kill and couldn’t help testing it, squeezing Vegeta’s hand and pulling him closer while complaining once more. Sure enough, if looks could kill he would have been immolated on the spot and it was clear only force of will was holding him back. Beerus smiled slowly; he was acting more like a mate to Vegeta than Goku did.
Very curious.
He mulled over that gem as Vegeta finally gathered enough focus to Transmit.
Piccolo frowned, looking to Gohan again as Krillin and Tenshinhan gathered their wits. “Beerus is too strong to fight but we can’t just leave Vegeta alone with him like this!”
Krillin shrugged. “What if we just run interference? It’s worked with him before. We just show up, irritate him until he gets distracted and forgets about… whatever the hell he’s up to.”
“No, no. It’s a good idea but it won’t work, not this time. Dammit…” Gohan ran his hands through his hair in frustration. He knew that after the fight with Freeza, without Goku here both Vegeta’s body and sanity were at stake. There was only one way out of this that he could see.
“Okay. I have an idea but you’re really going to have to trust me,” Gohan replied. “And… I’m going to need a hand.”
“Look, I don’t know what really happened between you, your Dad and Vegeta. But I do know that you’ve done a lot of changing since then, and seeing as how neither Goku or Vegeta blew your head off today, they probably see it too.”
Gohan smiled, more from relief than anything else. “Thanks, Krillin. Just make sure you give that speech to Goten and Trunks when you see them; they’re still not too sure about me. Grab them and meet us at Capsule Corp.”
“I’ll go with you. Those kids can be a handful.” He colored uncomfortably as Krillin grinned up at him. “What?! You were right, I was being an idiot, okay?!”
The former monk grinned and clapped him on the back. “Glad to hear you say that. It’s worth one week off your punishment. Let’s go!” He blasted into the sky and Tenshinhan watched him go for a moment. “Wait, what punishment?!” he yelled before following hot on his heels.
“While they’re running errands,” Gohan paused to give his old teacher a wry ghost of a smile. “We’re going to double check those control exercises.”
“Why? What are you planning to do?”
“Something… really stupid.”

Vegeta put away the last two bags of groceries, cursing under his breath. In a four bedroom house of course Beerus had appropriated his bedroom. At least the grocer remembered him when he called, overjoyed to resume their arrangement. He’d had the delivery boy leave his groceries on the front porch.
A shudder racked his frame and he allowed himself a moment before starting to put a meal together, more to keep Beerus happy than for himself as he’d lost his appetite. His blood felt like it was boiling in his veins and his body ached badly. On top of that he was tired from the fight with Freeza and needed rest, but was unwilling to take his attention away from his unpredictable charge.
Goku’s presence entered his mind, just enough to speak with him. Vegeta?
//What is it Kakarot?//
Is this all right? Or do you hurt worse when I’m with you like this? Tell me the truth.
Vegeta silently cursed Goku specifically asking for the truth. Having Goku so mentally close and so physically distant boosted the pain. //The more you’re with me mentally the worse my body hurts.//
Oh, I…
There were no more words but Vegeta growled angrily as he felt Goku backing off from the contact.
//Don’t treat me like I’m a weakling! Do you want to stay with me or not?//
I’m going crazy staying away, of course I want to be with you!
//Then do what you want.//
I just don’t want to make this any worse for you.
//That’s because you’re a soft-hearted idiot.//
Goku’s presence filled him and Vegeta shivered in relief, his fingers briefly clutching the counter for support. It wasn’t enough to drive away the filth in his soul or the fire in his body but he’d take what he could get. He would go through any amount of pain if it meant feeling this.
Vegeta blushed when he realized Goku had caught that last thought. Yeah? Well I’m not the only soft-hearted idiot here. Now. Can you eat?
Just the thought of eating caused nausea so bad even Goku’s stomach lurched. Okay, I’ll take that as a ‘no.’ That leaves the next best thing. You need sleep. Whis says Beerus will be out for the rest of the day so do it while you can. You’ll be in no shape to take him on if you don’t.
//Stop haranguing me! Besides, you know I can’t do that! It’s-//
What if I stay with you? With your body, I mean, just enough to hear what you hear and smell what you smell. That way I can wake you up if anything goes wrong. I’m not tired and I’ll bet Whis won’t mind.
//Absolutely not! I don’t doubt your strength but… this is a kind of pain you’re not equipped to deal with, Kakarot. It’s not necessary to-//
I think it is necessary. You don’t have to let me all the way in, just enough for me to know what’s going on around you while you’re sleeping. C’mon Vegeta, it’ll make me feel better. Please?
Vegeta sighed, he was exhausted and Goku knew it, taking the opportunity to not let him finish a thought. //All right, all right. I’m going. Gods, you’re like a horrendously annoying puppy.//
...I’ve seen you petting dogs when you think no one’s looking. You gonna pet me too? Goku grinned at the embarrassment and indignation that flooded him.
//Not at this rate.//
Vegeta couldn’t help a smile as he felt Goku grasping his sides in laughter.
One of the unused guest bedrooms would have to do, and he closed the door behind him, stripping out of everything but his underwear and eyeing the bed as though he were going to war with it.
It was useless, he couldn’t sleep with someone so near, especially someone as malicious as Beerus. Exhaustion struggled to claim him before his head even hit the pillow but he fought it until Goku helped it along. You know you can trust me. I’ll keep you safe, Vegeta. Sleep.
Before Vegeta could answer that it was pointless, he was asleep.
______________________________________________________________________________
“Goku?”
“Oh, sorry Whis. I’m here and with Vegeta so… sorry if I’m slow. I talked him into sleeping but he’s trusting me to wake him up if Beerus gets up to anything so I’ll have to keep this up for a while.”
“A wise precaution. I’ll let you know when we get close to our destination.”
Goku sank himself fully into the connection he and Vegeta shared. Time passed slowly, almost torturously. Goku couldn’t help but feel Vegeta’s roiling emotions as nightmares assailed him over and over. He tried to smother them, tried to pull Vegeta out of them but his every effort ended in a different kind of torture.
The barest brush of his influence against Vegeta’s dreams turned them from rending nightmare to exquisite ecstasy as his mate’s desperation for him pulled him in. At first he encouraged it, hoping to give Vegeta both respite from the nightmares and relief in the absence of physical touch. It seemed to be working for a while. He felt pleasure building in Vegeta’s body, driving away the nightmares and leaving him straining and gasping. But it soon became clear that the insubstantial lovemaking he could give wasn’t enough. No matter how far Goku pushed him Vegeta couldn’t find release.
Feeling tears running down Vegeta’s cheeks he realized the cruel brutality of the nightmares had been far kinder.
Though it hurt to do so Goku withdrew, going back to his vigil as frustration and regret ate at him. He’d never felt so helpless. Eventually Whis’ voice called to him and he roused himself.
“Wow, you’ve found Champa already?” Goku asked in surprise.
“Of course not, I’m not that good. I’m simply exhausted! This is a good place for a rest.”
Goku knew enough to doubt Whis’ claim, but he wasn’t about to argue. Whis phased back into a speed more manageable to Goku’s senses and he saw that they were floating above a planet almost twice the size of Earth that looked to be mostly desert. When they landed Goku was surprised to find the society was almost as technologically advanced as humans. Though clearly not the same race as Beerus the inhabitants were feline in appearance. They didn’t seem to be surprised to see him or Whis and treated Whis with a deference that made him wonder what he was to them. They were friendly and curious toward him as they made their way through the streets into a large temple. Whis noticed his amazement and smiled.
“Almost as good looking as me, aren’t they?” It startled a chuckle out of Goku. “This is my sister’s favorite planet. A very long time ago she came here and was mistaken for a goddess. She saw no reason to correct their thinking. I think something about having oversized cats attending to her every whim appealed to her rather cutting sense of humor. The family resemblance is rather striking so I get a good welcome here as well. It’s the perfect place to take a little break.”
Goku blinked widely and Whis laughed, taking pity on him. “Go back to Vegeta,” he said, taking Goku by the shoulders and walking him through the temple. “I’ll let you know when it’s time to come back.”

Beerus awoke slowly as he always did, wondering why it was still dark out. He frowned. He should have slept until after sunrise. His nose twitched and he smiled to himself, realizing what had woken him up. After a lazy stretch he went to what these humans laughingly referred to as a bathing room to freshen up.
A familiar presence somewhere on the planet drew him to a stop just short of the bathroom. After a moment he continued with a sneer. “Faugh. Useless dragon.”
It wasn’t until the steaming hot bathwater had cooled that Beerus finally emerged to dry and dress himself. The sky was beginning to lighten and he followed his twitching nose downstairs, pausing in the doorway to one of the typically unused bedrooms to find his new favorite toy sweaty and panting. He’d kicked off most of the sheets but they tangled around one leg and his underwear did little for modesty. More of his unclothed body was left exposed to Beerus’ gaze than he’d seen before.
He cocked his head to the side, appraising. The former prince was small, smaller than any adult Saiyan he’d ever seen before but his body was well-muscled and agile instead of stocky as one might have expected. And he was handsome for one of his people, especially taking into account that ballsy attitude that begged for breaking. Had their race survived Goku might not have stood a chance with him; even if he weren’t heir to the throne Vegeta would not have lacked for suitors, male or female.
He approached quietly, standing at the foot of the bed watching the show as Vegeta arched and writhed, whimpering in the grip of some nightmare. He looked even better with sweat beading on his brow, his face vulnerable now that it was free of that perpetual scowl. That scent that had woken him was thick here as Vegeta’s body desperately screamed out for the attention it was lacking. The clinging black shorts he wore did little to hide his hard, leaking erection and it was clear from his shivering and cold sweat he was in pain.
In fact, anyone’s attention would probably do right about now. Kakarot’s eldest had shown quite a bit of interest in Vegeta. The prince would be loathe to kill the son of his mate and nothing short of that would stop him from answering such a powerful call. It would be more than suitable entertainment to lock them in a room together and watch the show.
Vegeta shot up with a gasp at that moment, surprising him. A shudder racked his body so hard Beerus heard his teeth clack together. He stared at the meddling god for a long moment trying to catch his breath and shake himself from dreams of torturous pain and ecstatic pleasure that always stopped short of its peak. After a few breaths he composed himself while Beerus decided on a game to play with his toy.

Whis watched Goku absently shoving food into his mouth, unable to suppress a grin. He hadn’t even had to urge him into it, as soon as one of the temple attendants had put the food on the table before him he’d automatically started eating.
Being perceived as a god had its privileges and Whis had just kept the food-laden trays coming. Now polishing off tray number seven, Goku was finally slowing down. It would have to be enough, Whis knew Beerus’ habits by heart and he would be rousing soon.
“Goku. I need to speak with you.”
It took a minute for Goku to rouse himself, finding a balance between being in two places at once. Though his eyes were open Goku saw only the darkness behind Vegeta’s closed eyelids, and though trays of spiced, delicious foods were strewn about he only smelled Vegeta’s powerful scent. He could hear in both places but it was confusing; he found it was far easier to devote his concentration where it most mattered, leaving his conversation with Whis more or less on auto-pilot.
“How is Vegeta doing? Is he going to be able to defend himself if he needs to?”
“I don’t know; he’s asleep but he can’t get any rest. He keeps having such awful nightmares, having to get some rest after the fight with Freeza must have triggered them.”
Whis’ eyebrows knitted together in confusion. “Surely he understands the need for rest after a battle. What does that have to do with bad dreams?”
Goku answered without thought, too absorbed in his monitoring of Vegeta to think about the answers he was giving to Whis.
“A long time ago Freeza used Vegeta to clear out hostiles on a planet he was interested in like he almost always did. Only it was more difficult than Vegeta was used to and he tired himself out in the process. Afterward two of his strongest henchmen sent him to get some rest. He was only a child, but one with a power level higher than all but a handful of Freeza’s men. They didn’t take too kindly to that. They attacked him while he was sleeping and raped him again and again to try and put him in his place. It… changed him. One of them was kind to him long enough to earn his trust and he blames himself for it to this day.”
“They raped a… a child? Surely not even Freeza’s men would do such a thing…”
“That’s what I thought too, but… they did. It would have killed anyone else. Vegeta was just too tough and too stubborn to die. The rapes just went on and on after that, for years until he got strong enough to make them think twice about coming after him. By Saiyan standards he was still a child by the time Freeza got involved, but at least Freeza didn’t touch him until his body matured.”
Goku stopped, frowning at a familiar scent that was with Vegeta, not him. Vegeta, Wake Up! You’re not alone; I can smell Beerus near you!
He felt Vegeta come instantly awake at his call, but was jostled out of his meditation by a rumbling underneath him. The planet’s energy hadn’t felt unhealthy when they’d arrived...
He looked to Whis in alarm and found him sitting stock still, a completely stricken look marring his delicate features. It was only then that he fully registered what he’d been saying. Yes, Vegeta trusted Whis, but trusting him and opening the vault of misery that was his past to the ancient caretaker were two different things. The anger and sadness pouring off Whis was palpable and Goku realized the quake wasn’t the planet at all, it was Whis himself starting to lose control. He’d had glimpses here and there of Whis’ true power, but never unguarded like this. The rumbling kept increasing and the ground swayed, crashes and screams sounding throughout the temple. “Whis! Snap out of it!”
“What? Oh, dear.” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath and the rumbling subsided. “How embarrassing,” he said shakily. “I’d guessed but I didn’t know… that it had started so early and that it was more than just Freeza. I thought we were close so why… Why didn’t he tell me?!”
“I’m the only person he’s ever told and it took a lot of years and more than a little blackmail to get it out of him. I didn’t mean to spill all that to you, I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ll ever get the hang of being in two places at once,” he said with a wry smile. “It’s over now. He’s finally healing from all that, and you have a lot to do with it. I know how awful this is but you have to calm down.”
Whis reeled, absently calling his staff to his hand for a Temporal Do-over. Thinking of how he’d pushed Vegeta in the past, and how awful it must have been for him to be stripped so bare and be touched by someone so powerful was almost enough to bring him to tears.
“I knew. I knew his life was going to be difficult, with him holding both Freeza and Beerus’ attention it couldn’t be otherwise but… I never could have guessed it would be so horrible. And all I could see was the bigger picture, I needed someone with potential and he was the best prospect I’d seen in thousands of years. I didn’t think about what it would do to him… and even if I had known I… I don’t know if I could have done anything differently. Some friend I am…”
“Even though I get why you did the things you did it’s still hard for me to understand how you could let such terrible things happen for so long when you could have stopped them. But… when Vegeta and I bonded I started to understand just how little in the universe fits into good and bad, black and white. There’s so much in the middle, so much gray. Sometimes you just have to make the best decision you can and hope it’s the right one and from what I know that’s what you did. Look, I don’t know what kind of deal or contract you have with Beerus but if you really have changed, if really do care about what happens to us - to him - you’ll stay with us when all this is over. As much as I hate to say it… Vegeta needs you.”
Whis blinked widely at Goku, not quite believing what he was hearing. Though Goku was always Goku, kind and friendly, it was clear he was uneasy with Vegeta’s friendship with him. “Goku? Are you sure?”
Goku chuckled. “Whis, he laughs now. Really laughs, and not just because something terrible happened to someone he hated! I guess you wouldn’t know but he never really did that before. And… remember when you touched his shoulder earlier?”
Whis’ eyes widened when he realized Vegeta hadn’t reacted badly as he normally did. “My goodness. He really has come a long way.”
“It’s not easy for me to say all this, but it’s the truth. You did something amazing. You got him to trust you. After all he’s been through… that’s no small feat. Whatever you did or didn’t do in the past… that’s in the past.”
Whis thought back to all the Saiyans that Beerus had kept over the millennia. None of the dominants had been big on letting their mates out of their sight and every single one of the childbearers quite enjoyed the closeness. From the way he spoke it sounded like Goku would have preferred such an arrangement.
“Now that I think about it, you two being apart from each other is out of the ordinary,” he said, tapping the side of head. “In fact, over the years the only time I ever saw a male child-bearer and their mate apart from each other - on Planet Sadal or Beerus’ planet - was when Beerus’ meddling caused a separation. Don’t get me wrong, both partners wanted it that way even before Beerus forbidding them holding power on their own. That was a long time ago but it sounds as though you feel the same as they did. If you don’t mind my asking…?”
“Actually, I’m… really glad to hear you say all that,” Goku admitted, relieved beyond measure. “I thought there was something wrong with me. I hate it when he’s away from me. But…” Goku stopped, looked down at his hands for a moment. “If you’re asking why I don’t just force the issue, it’s mostly because of what my son did to him. If all had gone according to his plan he would have hidden Vegeta away somewhere, tied him up and kept him weak just so he could have him all to himself. Vegeta saw that in his mind and that’s when he decided it would be better to end his own life. He knew he couldn’t live like that.
“That’s in me too. I don’t mean that I’d ever hurt him and I’d never want him weak but… If I thought for a second I could hold him that tightly without breaking him I think… I’d do it. So I guess I’m just going out of my way to make sure he knows that I’m not just another person that wants to shackle and use him.”
“Hm. Interesting.” Goku was too deep in thought to question his small smile, and Whis was content to leave it that way. Vegeta already had him pegged; he never stayed at breakfast longer than an hour, never failed to bring him breakfast in bed, less to feed his mate and more to let him know he’d been thinking about him during their separation. And when they were separated by training or by Beerus Vegeta stayed with Goku over their bond as much as he could. Goku would have to figure that out on his own, though. Whis wasn’t about to ruin that happy surprise. But…
“Just be prepared. Even a bond doesn’t guarantee that misunderstandings won’t happen. Remember that your upbringing and his were very different. There will be times when all you may have to guide you are your instincts, and the day may come when you just have to follow them against your usual judgement.”
Goku rubbed the back of his head. “I guess so.”
“Well, in any case, thank you for sharing Vegeta. I haven’t had a real friend in… a very, very long time.”
“Oh, you’ll be feeling my pain soon enough. Just remember that when Piccolo starts muscling in on your breakfasts,” Goku laughed. “And once the girls get involved, forget about it. They don’t let anyone get between them and their Daddy.”
//KAKAROT!!!//
Goku’s laughter ended abruptly as the strength in the panicked cry ripped through him and made him jerk in shock. He sorted through the panic for the cause and moaned in horror.
Whis’ eyes widened, reaching for Goku to shake him out of whatever he was seeing. His connection to Vegeta was so strong that as soon as his hand touched Goku’s shoulder he had a flash of what Goku was sensing, pulling his hand away as if burned. Eyes narrowing in determination he grasped Goku’s shoulders and shook his student hard until he came back to himself, eyes focusing once more.
“Goku, it’s time! You have to go, now!”
Goku shook himself, then reached for the focus to Transmit but his own panic delayed him. Whis watched him trying to connect, frowning as he saw his attempts failing by an increasing margin each time.
Finally he calmed just enough to focus properly but the distance between him and Vegeta was far greater a gulf than he’d anticipated. After several tries he yelled in frustration, intimidated by the sheer vastness between them. This wasn’t the plan at all. Vegeta had intended to help him work this out, to help him get back but he was in no position to do so now. He was on his own. “I don’t even understand how the universes fit together, how can I do this without him?! He needs me and I can’t even help him!”
Whis’ own panic had been growing right alongside Goku’s, possibly even worse because he had no idea what was happening. “Yes, you can!” He snapped, trying to break through his student’s frenzy. “You are going about this the wrong way! It’s not as though you need a map, don’t you see? As tightly bonded as you two are distance means nothing. You are already there with him, simply let your body join your mind.”
The harshness of Whis’ voice had the effect it needed to have, pulling Goku back to the moment long enough to really hear him. It took a few moments of concentration but Goku saw it, gasped at the simplicity of it. The path between them was long, but it was clear.
He grabbed Whis’ hand, hoping that would be enough to get the answer he needed. “How long will it take me to get to him?”
“... Longer than he has,” Whis answered grimly, wishing like hell he was wrong. “I’m guessing ten to fifteen minutes. You know I have to return to Beerus as soon as you’re gone as I must guard his safety so please. Win. And be done by the time I return. I do not relish the thought of killing or being killed by my friends. Now go!”
A quick nod was all Goku spared time for before closing his eyes again. A deep breath and he reached out. It was like pulling himself up a rope, only the anchor was Vegeta’s strong presence. Once he began moving the most difficult thing was staving off the panic of what might happen in the time between them.
I’m coming, Vegeta. Just hold on a little longer.
As soon as Goku vanished before him Whis strode quickly from the room. As he moved through the temple the many priests, workers and penitents bowed reverently and quickly cleared a path for him.
Whis wondered what his worshippers would say if they knew their god was himself praying for a miracle.

Next chapter: Vegeta is a lone toy in a cat’s claws, and the god isn’t easy on his toys. Can he survive until help arrives?
ZeoViolet: Having a great family makes everything better, doesn’t it? Blessing, luck, however you would put it, I’m glad you have it. :) My Dad’s a veteran as well, much respect and thanks to your Dad and your family for his service. When one family member serves, all do!
I’m pretty sure there will be another pregnancy in the works… if gods stop trying to kill Vegeta and Goku long enough for them to get busy! Lol! It would totally serve Goku right to be covered in girls. :) And I just caught up on the last few eps of Super and wow, Vegeta in all his pissed-off, family-protecting glory is magnificent! It almost tops Vegeta catching Goku as my favorite Super moment. ...Almost. But it’s a close second! XD Thank you!
TristaML: Reviews like this make me wish I could write faster. I think you’re going to like some of the things coming up. I’m definitely not done with Gohan; I still feel like he’s got a part to play. Plus… I just like him. He needs some time to shine! And I’m gonna shut up now before I give everything away. But keep reading, and thank you as always! :D
