Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Twenty-seven
You know what was worse than Gohan sitting in front of you during a majority of classes? P.E.
Yep. You actually loved P.E now; it was nice actually being able to do something and not having to worry about collapsing or if your heart was going to burst. And out of school it was your best subject. That really wasn't something shocking. You'd gotten used to your body working how it should and it worked leagues better than any human you'd ever seen. You'd been stronger and faster before your adopted parents had replaced all your organs with ones that actually worked in your body, and now that you had them...well…it felt like cheating.
You kind of enjoyed cheating just a little bit too much.
Your tail wrapped around your hips as you exited the locker room in your gym clothes. Apparently you did that at the wrong (or right depending on your point of view) moment because you were stopped. There was a spike of energy behind you. It was small compared to what you had a feeling was inside of him but it showed you that he'd slipped a bit in surprise. Your tail compounded the problem as it twitched nervously.
Well damn.
"Hey, you," Gohan called out in a serious voice.
"Yes Gohan?" You asked without having to turn around.
"What are you doing here?"
He was pretty straight to the point. So you decided to be pretty direct with him as well. "I'm heading to P.E."
"I mean on Earth."
Oh. Well that was rude.
"I live here," you told him with a frown, turning back to look at him.
"But you're…"
He suddenly got nervous as he realized that he was around other kids. Most of whom were passing him up on their way to the field. Gohan caught up with you as you turned around to face him. He deserved at least a little bit of respect. Though it was pretty hard to give it to him considering the fact that all you wanted to do was run away. Even after only being around him for half a day there was some pretty conflicting feelings. You wanted to hate the symbol that he was but at the same time...he didn't deserve to be hated. He had no control over Goku's actions. And if you really wanted to think about it, neither had Goku. But it was a lot easier to be angry at the man. So much easier.
"You're a saiyan aren't you?" Gohan finally whispered when he got close to you.
"Apparently, yes," you told him in a slightly soured tone.
Because way to go parents - hiding that from you for years. Life might have been easier if you'd known that from the start. Maybe. You really didn't have a basis for if it would or wouldn't have seeing as you couldn't test it out.
"Wait, what do you mean apparently?"
You'd confused him. He had that cute head tilt too. You were torn between smiling and running away from him. You tried to do neither of those options. You took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"It's a long, very complicated story. Here is the simplest version I can possibly give you okay? Yes I'm a saiyan, no I'm not here to make people run and scream, no I'm not here for the dragonballs anymore, and yes I'm actually a student here. Are we okay now?"
Gohan stared at you as he tightened his head back up. He was taller than Goku had been. His shoulders were a bit leaner. But from what you could see of his collarbone his muscle mass was at least maintained. You looked up towards his eyes to watch for his reaction. They were just as wide and innocent looking as you remembered Goku's being. And just as dark.
"Uh...I...guess," Gohan said rather timidly.
You smiled slightly at him and then patted him on the shoulder. "Good. Now let's get to class okay?"
"Okay."
When you got to the baseball field most people were standing around. You lingered near one side away from Gohan as he talked with a few of the kids in the class. You already knew exactly whose team you were going to be on. Sharpner might be a tool but he was at least very good at sports. Again - by comparison to the normal people around him. It wouldn't be fair to compare him to people like Goku. Or, as you suspected, Gohan. So you took your position and waited for the self-proclaimed team captain to join you.
"So all star, ready to kill the new kid?"
From a falling star to an all star. My how the world had a sense of humor.
"You have issues Sharpner," you told him as you shook your head with a hint of amusement.
"Hey, I just want to make him feel at home. Teach him his place at this school so he can fit in pretty quick," Sharpner tossed back at you, smirking.
"Uh huh, how altruistic of you. So where do you want me? And I swear if you say under one more time I'm going to punch you in the face."
So you'd gotten a little violent since returning to Earth. Could you really blame yourself? First you found out that you'd been gone for way too many years, then you find out Goku has a family and lost his memory, and you had even gotten to the realization you'd have to attend a form of mental prison known as school if you wanted to survive in this world. On top of that there were guys like Sharpner who thought they were god's gift to mankind. Like they were doing the world a favor by existing and looking pretty by doing so. Okay, so he wasn't such a bad guy but...your nerves had made you a little snappy.
"You know you'd like it," he laughed in what you was sure was meant to be a good hearted way.
"You'd like it," you responded. "Now seriously; where?"
"Sit back for a bit, I want to see if the brainiac has any skills."
And so you waited your turn. There were two hits and so far no one had scored any points. By the third hit it was Sharpner's turn. He took the batter's box with well deserved confidence. And his swing would have been a home run for any player if it wasn't for Gohan.
Gohan jumped at least twenty-five feat in the air and was able to put the ball right into third. To the base man's credit he at least caught the ball. But the force of it sent him back into the ground. You smiled at that. It was kind of a nice reminder. The look on Gohan's face when he lowered himself down was sweet, even a little embarrassed. And then it was his turn to bat.
You grabbed at Sharpner's wrist and tried to stop him from taking the pitcher's mound. But he looked at you like you were crazy. So you didn't push the box anymore than that. Maybe Gohan would teach Sharpner a lesson. He kind of needed one in humility.
What you didn't expect was that Gohan let himself get hit. He even seemed happy about it. Sharpner stood in shock, his eyes following the happily trotting Gohan towards first base. Right where you were.
"Should have just hit the ball, you'd look less suspicious that way," you told him as you waited for the next person to be up.
"Huh? You think?"
"You just got hit in the head Gohan. And instead of getting hurt, you broke the ball," you laughed at his downright embarrassed look.
"Oh man…"
"Look, don't sweat it so much okay? The more you worry the harder fitting in will be," you told him. It was hard not to smile but you managed.
"Are you sure you're a saiyan?" Gohan asked you as he kept his eye towards where the next batter was standing.
You did too, though when he asked that question your face squished up in confusion. "Pretty sure. Why?"
"Cause most of the ones I've met haven't been very nice."
That made you blush a little in embarrassment. He'd basically just called you nice.
"How did you--" he started to ask but was cut off when the next person swung.
"Talk later," you told him, sort of hurrying to get the ball.
You caught it of course but not so fast that you seemed as inhumane as Gohan had earlier. After all, you had lived a few years knowing the human limitation almost intimately so you had a bit more practice at it than him. You wondered if it would be the right thing to do to help him out with that, to help him blend in and have an okay life. Or...would that be weird? There were so many questions brought up by his very existence that it was hard to think about it without getting distracted.
Later. Like you told Gohan that you'd talk later, you'd consider what was happening later.
