Fusion II
The effects of such a strange Transmission were jarring. Between one second and the next Goku went from traveling faster than light to lying limp in Vegeta’s arms. He wanted to move, to hold Vegeta to him, find out what had taken place during his absence. But he just couldn’t move.
Vegeta, please, what’s happening to me?
“Panicking solves nothing, calm down and just breathe. That’s it,” Vegeta calmed almost absently, off-balance himself both from Goku’s sudden appearance and his own reactions to finally having him so close. “The forces involved in getting you back so quickly must have disrupted the connection between your mind and body.”
So how do we fix it?
Vegeta’s attention bounced back and forth between Goku’s recovery and Gohan’s battle with Beerus. His mate’s son had done well but his fight against Beerus was a losing proposition, one that Vegeta could not allow to become fatal.
“Gods dammit,” he swore as Gohan took a brutal hit and struggled to rise again. He was almost certain Goku’s body would recover on its own but it would take more time than they had, which left only one option. //Kakarot, I’m going to have to stabilize your body again.//
The push of Vegeta’s mind into his was more than welcome and he pulled Vegeta in. Just fuse with me now, it’s time!
Vegeta swore again. It was a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time but Goku was right, they had no choice but to do it all at once. //All right, I’ll do it now!//
Will you take it all the way this time?
//No. I… can’t.//
Goku’s heart sank a little even though he’d known what the answer would be. Vegeta would continue to do what he always did during their practice sessions. He would tie their bodies and minds together completely, would even tie himself wholly into Goku’s emotions but that’s where things would stop. He wouldn’t let Goku in much past the surface of his own emotions.
Vegeta had begun closing himself off over the past few months, ever since Beerus had awoken. He’d done it with such a deft touch it had taken Goku a long time to even notice the loss. When he tried to bring it up Vegeta found ways to distract him or change the subject and eventually he’d taken the hint and stopped asking. He told himself he was respecting Vegeta’s privacy, that after everything Vegeta had been through he just needed time and would tell him why he needed that distance when he was ready. But he was too honest to deny the truth, that his willingness to accept the situation was simply fear on his part, of pushing too hard, of finding out that he wanted more than Vegeta was willing to give.
He knew Vegeta was unstable, knew how much pain he was in both physically and mentally but felt none of that as Vegeta invaded his mind. He simply wasn’t allowed access to it.
Vegeta please, let me in so I can-
//I said no, Kakarot. I don’t even know if I can handle what’s inside me right now. Opening it up is a last resort and I’m going to need some way to protect you just in case I have to do it. If I don’t you might be consumed as well and I- Stop distracting me with this, there’s no time to explain! Just get ready, dammit!//
I’ve been ready for this since we bonded, Vegeta.
//Then let me in.//
Goku tipped his head back in tacit permission and shivered when Vegeta’s lips touched the skin of his neck. Even though it wasn’t the full enmeshing that he dreamed of it was still a heady and powerful experience. Vegeta never took his mind without his consent and every time he did it Goku had the sense of being a small animal held fearlessly in the jaws of a lion. It was his first - amused - thought whenever Beerus referred to him as the dominant between them, or spoke to him as though he controlled Vegeta in some way. The god just didn’t understand, and neither of them were going to enlighten him. It had nothing to do with who penetrated who during sex. Whoever was dominant was whoever needed to be at the time.
This fusion wasn’t the violent crashing together of the Potara version, especially since Vegeta had learned to control their coming together. Even now Vegeta gently coaxed his body back to its normal rhythms by tying them to his own in the first step of fusing. He gasped as his awareness doubled, then sighed as he took a deep breath through two sets of lungs. Thanks to Whis they’d spent time practicing this and he assimilated all the new information easily.
//I’ll need to keep our thoughts separate but it won’t be for long. Gohan is-//
I know, I feel it. You help him and I’ll keep Beerus busy, just finish bringing us together as soon as he’s safe.
Goku felt Vegeta’s assent and as his coordination returned he wound his arms around Vegeta’s neck, moaning and pressing him tighter against his throat as he began to tie their minds together as well. Despite the stakes in this, amusement drifted through him. //Try not to come this time. I don’t have time to clean you properly.//
Sh- Shut up! If you want me to keep my clothes clean don’t fuck my mind while you’re sitting on my lap chewing on my neck! What else was going to happen?!
//Third class. No self-control.//
I’m gonna make you regret saying that!

Beerus smashed Gohan in the face once more, enjoying the solid impact and the resulting spray of blood. This was keeping him from what he really wanted, but at least it was an enjoyable delay. Vegeta was simply staying out of the way of the battle, maybe trying to recover some of his dignity. He was relying on Gohan to defend him, doing nothing but waiting on the results of the fight it seemed. It wasn’t like him but - Beerus noted with a grin - the former prince wasn’t exactly himself at the moment. Besides, he had plenty of time to enjoy his new toy after pummeling Gohan into the dirt; Whis and Goku would be gone at least a week.
In his anger with Gohan and his focus on punishing the young upstart’s insolence Beerus didn’t pay much mind to the building of energies that had begun to niggle at his awareness. He’d baited Vegeta into unleashing that delightfully entertaining temper enough times to know the flavor of his ki and it didn’t matter. No matter what the princeling did it wouldn’t be enough.
Gohan launched a desperate attack and Beerus easily dodged it. Growing weary of the battle he decided to end it, closing on the exhausted warrior and dragging him off the ground by his gi. “That was impressive. It’s a shame I have to kill you but I have no use for a fool.” Before Beerus could strike that wild buildup of energies began to have a different feel. The shock was enough to stay his hand in midair.
“No,” he growled through clenched teeth. Goku’s ability to Transmit wasn’t up to the task of travel so far and so fast. ‘How could he have gotten here?!’
The answer made itself known as he sensed something he’d dismissed as long dead. Beerus knew the nature of that power; even after all this time he had not forgotten its taste. Clawed hands spasmed in the fabric of Gohan’s gi and Beerus felt something he hadn’t felt in thousands of years.
Fear.
This was Saiyan Fusion. It had only happened once before and putting that power down had been a difficult task. And worse, Goku and Vegeta were far stronger at base level than their ancestors had been. But he’d been confident they’d never come close to this achievement; he’d put a good deal effort into putting that power beyond the Saiyan’s reach. It shouldn’t have been attainable by these two, requiring a bond far stronger than they had. There was no way this was happening, it made no sense.
They could have been playing him all along but Goku had neither the smarts nor the cunning to deceive him for such an extended game-
“They seem to have gone back to bonding the traditional way… For the most part they’re functioning as equals.”
Beerus looked into Vegeta’s knowing, cold blue eyes and everything fell into place. All along he’d assumed Goku to be the one who made all the decisions but he’d underestimated the significance of what Whis had told him about these two.
He’d been dealing with the wrong dominant. And it could be a costly mistake.
“I’ve underestimated you, it seems,” Beerus acknowledged.
“You’re not the first,” Vegeta growled angrily. “Everyone makes mistakes, even gods. Not letting me die with the rest of my people was yours.” Vegeta disappeared, reappearing only to snatch Gohan out of his grasp and leap away. An attack from Goku momentarily distracted him but it didn’t take him long to locate his pilfered prey. He hadn’t yet been denied this kill.
______________________________________________________________________________
Gohan’s blurred vision betrayed him. One moment he was about to receive Beerus’ killing blow, the next he was out of harm’s way in Vegeta’s arms, looking up into his concerned gaze.
‘Concerned…? Am I dead…?’
He felt an incoming blast and Vegeta simply pulled him closer, raised his hand and shielded them both from its incredible power with seeming ease. “Vegeta,” he said softly, deciding that if he was dying he’d at least take advantage of it. Heedless of the struggle going on over his head he tucked his head into Vegeta’s chest, sighing as much as damaged ribs would allow.
The former prince looked down long enough to quirk an eyebrow at him. “Why is it whenever Beerus attacks all you and your father want to do is lay on me and cuddle?! Hang on, I’m going to get you out of here.” The roaring cacophony abruptly stopped and Vegeta laid him down on something soft and moved away. He returned quickly and Gohan felt what could only be a senzu bean being pushed into his mouth.
Its effect took hold quickly after he bit down on it and his senses returned in a rush. Sounds of battle reached him and he realized they hadn’t gone far, just inside Vegeta’s house. He sat up, shaking his head to clear it and saw Vegeta regarding him, arms crossed over his chest. “What did you learn from fighting him? Anything useful?”
“I know I got him to fight harder than he wanted to, but I’m not sure how much that tired him out if at all. I think he’s like us; he seems to get stronger with anger but the more power he uses the more careless he gets.”
“Now that’s something I can use.” Vegeta looked thoughtful for a moment and Gohan knew he was communicating with Goku. Shortly after there was an enraged scream that could only have been Beerus followed by an explosion that sent a shock wave over the countryside. Gohan shot up in alarm but Vegeta only chuckled. “I told Kakarot to piss him off. Your father can be… singularly fucking irritating when he wants to be. We only have what Whis has told us to gauge what kind of power he’s really packing. I need to know what we’re dealing with.”
“Is there anything else I can do?”
“No, you’ve done more than I could have expected. Kakarot and I will take it from here.”
“What will you do?”
“We learned a new way to fuse while we were with Whis. I started it but I didn’t want to complete it until you were safe. You’ve got to get away from here; things are about to get messy.”
Vegeta turned to go and Gohan let him. There were a million things he wanted to say but… now wasn’t the time. His part in this was over, and he couldn’t help feeling a sense of disappointment at the thought. He raised a finger to his forehead and closed his eyes, but Vegeta decided more need be said.
Gohan stood stock still as Vegeta touched his mind, a little more deeply than was necessary for communication. //Everything you’ve done here, everything you’ve done to be strong enough to stop what Beerus was trying to do to me… I see it. I see it all. When this is all over, I’ll find you. I think we both need to figure out where the hell we go from here.//
In shock Gohan watched him go, a growing warmth filling him as Vegeta launched himself off the bedroom balcony. He raised a shaky finger to his forehead, smiling as a tear fell from an eye. *I’ll look forward to it, my Prince. Please be careful.*

//Kakarot. I’m going to finish it. Take him out of the atmosphere or we’ll blow the planet.//
Goku did as Vegeta said, forcing as much power into his hits as he could in order to get Beerus as far into space as he could. As the battle rose he felt power growing within him alongside Vegeta’s presence. The strain of fighting Beerus bled away, Goku’s hits became more powerful while at the same time becoming faster and easier to throw. And finally in an explosion of power that rattled the universe the two battle-hardened Saiyans merged.
Beerus growled low in his throat, cursing his lack of foresight. He’d thought he had the two monkeys under control, that he understood their power and motivations but he hadn’t realized how different they were from their ancestors, and how alike at the same time. It was infuriating.
“I’ve had enough! I was born a god, do you really believe I could be defeated by a science experiment undertaken out of boredom?!”
Goku’s eyes narrowed and he very coldly laid out his thoughts. “What I believe is the truth. That you’ve been a plague on this universe, that because you don’t have respect for anything but yourself countless lives have been lost, countless innocents have been made to suffer for no good reason. I believe… that justice is finally coming for you Beerus.”
“No one speaks to me this way!” Beerus cried angrily. Power rolled off of him, focused on Goku. This was the true power of the God of Destruction, and Beerus knew it was overwhelming.
However, strangely this one, the younger of the two Saiyans…
Just smiled at him. Closed his eyes and exploded in a power that rivaled his own. He grit his teeth and turned just in time to dodge a blast from Vegeta, only to run straight into Goku’s fist. “Cursed monkey bastard spawn of a wh-”
While he reeled from the impact Vegeta swung him around by the tail and sent him hurtling into a large asteroid.
“I will not be defeated!” he roared, his anger lending him even more strength.

‘Beerus is going to destroy the solar system, if not the galaxy or the universe if this continues much longer. He needs to go down, now.’
The thought generated an action and Goku briefly became ‘Goku’ again as ‘Vegeta’ pushed him away for a moment. Separating was always more confusing than coming together, and was even moreso now. He felt a rumbling fury in that part of Vegeta’s mind that he didn’t have access to, and strangely… an apology.
Power flowed into him, raw and untamed and he roared with the sheer elation of it, the triumph in it. He looked to Vegeta, wondered if he was glowing as brightly as Vegeta was but stopped short at the darkness he could see in Vegeta’s eyes. He could see it, but couldn’t feel it from their bond. Before he could question it Vegeta was slipping into his mind, bringing them back together again.
______________________________________________________________________________
Blinding, blue-white light exploded from two sources and filled Beerus’ vision, forcing him to fight impaired for a few moments. He was furious enough to bring the universe crashing down around their heads, but it wouldn’t hurt them enough. He would let them see their precious new home destroyed before finishing them off.
He opened his mouth and the blast that came roaring out of him was too powerful to be stopped. It consumed a great deal of his energy but the risk was worth it. There would be nothing left of the accursed planet, not even a debris field and it wouldn’t stop there, continuing on its path of destruction as it barrelled through the universe; even Beerus didn’t know when it would run its course.
The shock on his opponent’s faces in that horrific moment made him want to double over in laughter, but it didn’t last long. There was only a split second before their - no, just Goku’s - counterattack and he met it with a triumphant grin.
Goku was sweating heavily, looking panicked and probably communicating furiously with Vegeta. But it was pointless, what could they do? ‘They…’ Beerus’ brow wrinkled in confusion though his fight with Goku became more pitched. ‘Where the fuck did the other one go?!’
He saw it out of the corner of his eye. Saw it, but simply couldn’t believe it. One of Whis’ so-called ‘last ditch’ defensive techniques, to be used only as a last resort because of the near impossibility of timing it properly, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of even a minute error in execution.
The fight had moved far enough away from the Earth for Vegeta to have moved between it and his blast. It was difficult to sense as Goku wouldn’t let him turn his focus from their fight even for a moment, but he felt power exactly - ‘exactly…?!’ - equal to his own, and then saw his unstoppable, planet-vaporizing blast…
Fade and die before it could reach the densely populated planet.
Shock and exhaustion slowed him and Goku’s fist connected with his chest the next time it flew.
As though the hit knocked a memory loose Beerus heard a voice from his distant past as clear and bright as a bell. “It’s called destructive interference. It can be used to negate an enemy’s attack, one that-”
More hits landed and he reeled, finally recognizing the sure hand of his now former mentor in his downfall. It was Beerus who’d decided the game, Beerus who’d crafted the pieces and put them on the board. But Whis…
Somewhere along the line Whis had taught those pieces how to play.
And it seemed his new students had learned, and learned better than he ever had.
Enraged by the truth that he could no longer deny, what little regard he had for the grand order of things crumbled. The Kais, the Omni-King, and Whis most especially could all keep him company in whatever came next for dead gods for all he cared. Flailing out blindly Beerus pulled all his anger, all his indignation to him, power enough to take the universe down with him if he went. His fist was caught mid-swing in Vegeta’s hand as all that unleashed power faded to nothing and the memory continued to batter him relentlessly.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Whis. Why would I need such a technique? Who could even drive me to need such methods, the idea is laughable!”
“Your position can be taken from you, you know.”
“...You can’t be serious.”
“Don’t scoff, it’s true. Your position can be lost. The Omni-King can give it to someone else, or you can lose it to a challenger. Which is why-”
“The Omni-King has better things to do than check up on my job performance, and a successful challenge? Don’t make me laugh! Even the Kais cower at the mention of me, who would be foolish enough to move against me?”
“There is always the possibility of a stronger or more determined opponent than you, young Beerus. Someone with nothing to lose, or everything to lose. You would do well to remember that.”
Goku’s fist connected from the left side of Beerus’ face, and Vegeta’s from the right, about half an inch off center from Goku’s. A sickening squelching crunch echoed through their ears. They withdrew their hands and for good measure the two Saiyans hit his body with a blast that sent him spiraling into the crushing gravity well of the system’s largest planet.
As his vision filled with white Beerus remembered his own laughter, and Whis’ look of utter disappointment and disapproval at his response to the proposed lesson. It had almost been enough to give him pause, to make him rethink his confidence in his own invincibility.
Almost.
“No, Whis. We won’t waste time on such a technique that can have no offensive use. I am the God of Destruction. You will teach me to attack, to destroy as is fitting. Save your defensive desperation for the weak and the powerless. I am made for more important things.”

Two bodies panted harshly in unison for a moment, watching cautiously as a sullen purple glow began to emanate from Jupiter’s center. With a sharp cry Goku suddenly found himself back in his own skin once more as Vegeta violently propelled him from their connection.
He held his head, wincing at the ache. Vegeta was always so careful, he never allowed Goku to bear any pain in their joining or separation. Something was wrong, something was very wrong, but their trial wasn’t over yet. Whis had done his best to prepare them for the shifting of power from one god to the next but even he’d never seen this before, only heard of it.
They held still as that purple glow coalesced into a ball of energy, split and encompassed each of them. It burned through them both, hot and molten and all either of them could do was scream in silence until the pain finally died down.
Goku sat up first, feeling as though he’d been ripped inside out and back again. Eventually he became aware of dirt under his fingers and gravity pulling at him in one direction. He wondered which one of them had had the foresight and ability to get them to Earth’s solid ground before completely losing control; he honestly couldn’t remember.
Looking around he spotted Vegeta, doubting what he felt in his own body. But it was mirrored in Vegeta, their capacity to hold energy had been boosted beyond measure.
“We did it,” he whispered. “We really did it. He's gone.” They had taken on the God of Destruction and won the war. Their universe would finally have a fighting chance of becoming something better than a playground for the powerful.
Vegeta groaned and began to stir, pushing himself to his feet and Goku’s face fell. For the first time since they’d bonded he couldn’t feel anything from his mate.
Vegeta…? Vegeta!
Goku waited, heart pounding still he felt nothing coming back to him… nothing. Their bond was still there, it had just gone completely silent; he might as well have been shouting into a dark hallway. Even if Vegeta were unconscious there would have been some kind of response.
His breath quickened anxiously as he wondered what their victory had cost.

Whew. This one was a doozy.
Up next: Goku finds out what Vegeta sacrificed for their win over Beerus. He’ll have to conquer his own fears to have any hope of rebuilding what they had.
I’m sorry for the delay, guys. I broke my doggone finger and am typing like a sloth. I’ll be back to a Sunday upload in (under) a couple of weeks. Thanks for the encouragement, and for sticking with me!
