Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…

“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”

Part 29

The soft light of dawn awoke Heero at a very early hour, and he was quickly out of bed to check on Duo, who was still sleeping like a baby.

Quietly, Heero dressed and prepared himself for the day, before seeking out the bathroom. A quick peck to Duo's forehead was all he had time for before hurrying off to relieve his full bladder. He took the opportunity to wash up somewhat, although he forewent the much needed shower as he opted to go in search of anyone else who might be awake.

He trusted Sally's judgment as far as the medical personnel went, but he wanted to get Duo as far away from the team that had worked on him as possible. It wasn’t good to stay in one place for too long. That was something that had been drummed into his head at an early age in the guild. Who knew what a person might say in passing that would give a clue to the whereabouts of the assassin team. Heero's training ran to the very core of his being and he couldn’t ignore it or deny it. They needed to move on, and the sooner the better.

He found Simon sitting in the kitchen talking quietly with Sally. There was fresh coffee, for which Heero was grateful. He poured himself a cup before he joined the others.

“I never did say thank you for what you did for Duo yesterday,” Heero said to the woman as he sat down at the table with them.

“It’s no problem,” Sally replied. “I usually don’t do any kind of medical work anymore, but Simon asked me to be on stand-by, knowing you wouldn’t trust anyone else.”

“Yeah,” said Heero, blushing as he looked at the table for a moment. “It’s kind of hard, us being who we are, to be able to trust very many people. Our training makes it hard for us to behave like normal people.”

“We understand,” said Simon. “We know what makes the two of you tick and we work with it. It’s the least that we can do to keep people of your caliber and expertise as part of our company. You are very valuable to us, and we want you to understand that.”

“Thanks,” replied Heero gratefully, knowing that W.E.I. put up with a lot of his and Duo's little idiosyncrasies that many other companies wouldn’t even think of doing. “Speaking of who and what we are, we need to move. I don’t like so many people knowing about Duo, in light of all that went down. I know that you took measures to protect us, but still, I need to move him as soon as possible. I can’t take any chances, especially while he’s so vulnerable.”

“I understand,” responded Simon. “I was just talking to Sally about it and she agrees that Duo is strong enough to move anytime.”

“Yes,” agreed Sally. “He needs quiet and rest, but being in a vehicle for enough time to get you well away from the center of all of this won’t hurt him a bit. We’ll keep him pretty well sedated…”

“No,” said Heero, interrupting her. “He won’t allow you to sedate him. Just give him some pain killers that won’t knock him out.”

“But Heero, it’s for his own good,” protested Sally.

“No. He’ll want his wits about him, especially while we’re moving and vulnerable. I can’t change that. It’s the way Duo is,” Heero explained. “He can’t allow himself to be unable to defend himself.”

“But we’ll have two agents, as well as yourself,” put in Simon.

“You don’t know Duo,” replied Heero flatly. “It would go against all of his training, and he won’t allow that. He takes his training very seriously. Even I can’t make him change those aspects of his life, I can only modify them to some point. And sedating him is beyond that point.”

“But if we don’t tell him…” started Sally.

“That’s definitely out. I have to live with him, and if he thinks that I’ve deceived him or betrayed him, he’ll make my life a living hell,” Heero smiled. “I actually want to sleep with him, and not on the couch, which is where I’d be for a damned long time if he though I had any hand in such actions. You have no idea how long Duo can hold a grudge. I’ve been on the receiving end of some of his snits and I don’t want to repeat them if I can help it, thank you very much.”

“We’ll abide by your decision, then,” said Simon, smiling in return. “We don’t want to come between you and your marital bliss. No one wants a pissed off wife.”

“Thanks,” replied Heero. “So, when can we get moving?”

“I’ve made arrangements for a car and two agents to act as guards to be here this morning. We have a safe house that will be ready for you when you get there. The trip will most likely take about two days. We’re not going to hurry it and draw unnecessary attention,” Simon told him.

“These agents, you trust them?” asked Heero.

“Yes. They are two of Mr Winner’s personal security people,” said Simon.

“Good,” was all that Heero said. “I’ll go see if Duo is awake yet.”

He left and Sally looked at Simon.

“I know what you’re thinking,” said Simon, “but Azrael said to do whatever was necessary to keep them happy. They’ve done us an immeasurable service and we can’t do enough to thank them.”

“I know. I agree with that part,” said Sally. “I just wish we could sedate Duo. I don’t want him to fly apart on this little journey. He lost a lot of blood and he needs to rest, no matter what his training tells him.”

“I agree, but it’s been part of his life for too long for us to try to change him at this point in time,” replied Simon. “If you’ll excuse me, Sally, I need to call Azrael before I get this ball rolling.”

Simon left quietly and Sally finished her coffee before she prepared to go check on her recalcitrant patient. She would at least make the attempt to appeal to Duo on the subject of being sedated for the ride, although she felt she would be fighting a losing battle.

Duo was awake and cranky when she arrived at his room. At first she thought it was due to the pain, but no, it was much simpler then that. Duo was hungry and Heero had refused to feed him until Sally had checked on him and said it was alright to give him solid food. So Duo was a bit miffed, to say the least.

Heero kept trying to appease him, wanting to hold his hand, touch him in some way, but Duo would look away or shrug him off. Sally almost laughed, reminded of her cat when said cat thought that she had wronged somehow, keeping just out of fingers reach but complaining loudly and demanding attention at the same time. She finally stepped in to let Heero off the hook somewhat.

“So, how are you feeling this morning, Duo?” she said brightly.

Duo glared for a moment or two, then decided that he should be nice to his doctor if he wanted the satisfaction of breakfast.

“I hurt. And I’m hungry. And Heero won’t feed me,” Duo complained, a cute pout on his face.

“Babe, I told you….” Heero started.

“I’m not talking to you. You’re trying to starve me. I’m talking to Sally,” said Duo, putting his nose up in the air somewhat.

“Let me look at your shoulder, then we’ll see about breakfast,” said Sally, trying hard to suppress her grin and a giggle as the image of her cat once again popped into her mind.

She pushed Duo's dressing gown off of his shoulder and removed the bandages. The wound had a little seepage and was an angry red, but the site was cool to the touch and on the whole looked good. She replaced the dressing and rebandaged the area, then pulled his gown back up.

“Looks good,” she said. “But before you eat, I’d like to discuss something with you. It’ll only take a couple of minutes.”

“Then I get breakfast? Real food, not some liquid crap or jello or anything like that?” Duo asked, a hopeful look on his face.

“Real food. I’ll make you some pancakes, if you’d like,” Sally replied.

“Alright! I love pancakes,” Duo exclaimed with a bright smile. “So, what’s on your mind?”

“Well, you know that we’re going to move you from this house,” Sally started, and Duo nodded in agreement. “Heero wants to move you today, and I’ve agreed to it, but…”

“But what?” Duo prompted.

“I’d like to sedate you for the drive…” was all she got out before Duo cut her off.

“No way,” he said flatly.

“But Duo, it’s going to be at least a two day drive and you’d be more comfortable,” Sally want on, trying to be reasonable.

“No,” responded Duo.

“Why not?” asked Sally, a bit exasperated by now.

“I won’t let myself be in a position where I can’t at least defend myself, let alone Heero,” replied Duo.

“But Heero will be with you at all times, as well as two very experienced security agents, to keep the two of you safe,” Sally argued.

“No,” said Duo again.

“But what if, as your doctor, I tell you that I’m going to sedate you no matter what you want?” Sally asked, going for broke.

“Don’t even try it,” said Duo, a dangerous glint appearing in his eyes. Heero knew what that meant. Trouble. It was time to step in and defuse the situation.

“Told you so,” he said to Sally with a bit of a smirk.

“But, Heero…” she tried once more to appeal to the other’s reason.

“No,” said Heero quietly, earning a smile from Duo.

“Alright,” said Sally, finally giving in. “I had to try, though. So, how about those pancakes now, Duo?”

“Ah, if you don’t mind, I’d like Heero to make them for me,” said Duo. “No offence, but, you know…”

“I understand,” said Sally with a bit of a sad smile. She had lost some of his trust, it seemed, and he was staying just out of fingers reach now.

“I’ll go let Simon know that you can be ready to go in about two hours,” she said. “Heero, I leave your wife in your capable care, then. I’ll give you some pain killers he can take if it gets too much for him. And he can have a shower, if you keep it brief. I’ll leave a fresh bandage for you to put on afterwards.”

Heero nodded and made ready to follow the woman from the room. He felt a bit sorry for her at the moment, but he did warn her. Oh, well. It was he that had to live with Duo, and better he be miffed at someone else rather than Heero.

Duo settled back in his bed, thoughts of pancakes drenched in butter and syrup drifting through his mind, all else forgotten for the moment.

~*~

Duo had been fed, Heero making him a huge stack of fluffy pancakes, which he proceeded to drown in syrup and devour as if he hadn’t eaten in a week. If appetite was any indication, Duo was already well on his way to full recovery.

The shower went well, and feeling clean and refreshed, Heero went out to meet the special agents that Simon had chosen to accompany them on the move to the new safe house.

Standing by a nondescript car he saw two women, one a petite blonde with incredibly long hair and the other a brunette. They both turned as Heero approached.

“Mr Yuy,” the brunette acknowledged. “I’m Agent Annie Greene and this is Agent Lily White. We were just discussing our plans for the move. I’m glad you’re here. Now we can continue, if you don’t mind.”

“Ladies,” Heero replied. “I’d like to hear your ideas.”

“What we plan, to make ourselves as unremarkable as possible, is to act like two couples,” Agent Green started, obviously the one who was senior of the two. “You, Mr Yuy, and I will be one couple, Agent White and Mr Maxwell the other. You will ride in front with me and Agent White will accompany Mr Maxwell in the rear. In that way we can give him the very best protection, and yourself, as well, while looking inconspicuous.”

“I see,” said Heero, a thoughtful look on his face.

“I’m glad you agree. Now, if you would go and get Mr Maxwell…” the agent started, only to be cut off by Heero.

“I didn’t agree to your plan,” responded Heero.

“What? But…” Agent Greene started to speak again, only to be cut off by Heero once more.

“No,” said Heero.

“Now look, Mr Yuy, Agent White and I are the agents in charge here, and we will decide what is best for yourself and Mr Maxwell,” stated a now slightly irritated Agent Greene, who was trying to hold on to her temper. It was obvious that she was used to doing things her way and to have someone contradict her went against her way of thinking.

“I think you are misunderstanding the situation here,” said Heero. “You are not in charge of anything. You are just along for the ride. I do not ‘partner’ with anyone but my wife. And he and I will not agree to anything as ludicrous as what you are suggesting.”

“Mr Yuy,” Agent Greene’s voice started to rise as her anger grew. “I will do my job as I see fit. And you and Mr Maxwell…”

“Then you will do it else where,” stated Heero, a edge to his voice now. “Mrs Yuy and I really don’t need either of you along for our protection. You are here for our convenience and Simon’s peace of mind.”

At that moment, Simon walked up. At a glance he could see that Heero was agitated and about ready to explode. Why couldn’t his agent see that as well? She was supposed to be well trained and one of the best. Simon shook his head slightly as he prepared to step in and defuse the volatile situation. Time to reevaluate and make corrections to the agents training later.

“Is there a problem here?” Simon asked calmly, laying a hand on Heero's arm and looking at the agent.

“Mr Bloom…” the agent started, only to be cut off by Heero once more.

“Simon. This woman has some delusional idea that she is in charge of things and is dictating what she wants us to do. It’s completely unacceptable,” stated Heero.

“I see,” said Simon, thoughtfully, eyes going between the two. He could see a small smile of triumph on the agent’s face as she thought Simon would side with her, she being the trained agent, and put Heero, the client, in his place. Unfortunately, Simon had a rude awakening for the agent.

“Agent Greene, is it? Agent Green, you may be used to doing things in a proscribed manner, but in this instance you will have to disregard the rule book and do things a bit differently,” said Simon, watching her face fall. “Mr Yuy is the one who will be calling the shots for this operation. As far as Mrs Yuy’s security is concerned, Mr Yuy has the final word. You will do what ever he tells you, or we’ll find someone else that he can work with. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir,” the agent answered, her face pale. The other agent just stood quietly, her eyes wide in disbelief at the exchange and the ultimatum.

“Is this satisfactory with you, Heero?” Simon asked the assassin.

“Yes. Thank you for clearing this up for the agents,” replied Heero. “I’ll go get Duo ready. We’ll be out in about half an hour.”

“Take your time, Heero. Treat Duo carefully. We have great plans for our little songbird, you know,” said Simon with as smile as Heero walked back to the house.

“Everything alright now, ladies? No more misunderstandings, please. I’m going to tell you this for your own good and you will do well to heed it and never repeat what I’m about to say. Understand?” asked Simon, sternly.

“Yes, sir,” answered the agents in unison.

“Good. Mr Yuy and his wife are two of the deadliest assassins around. They would have no compulsion against taking the two of you out, and they would have no regrets about doing it, if they thought for even one instant that you were in any way a threat to either of them. They are also highly valued employees of W.E.I., not to mention close, personal friends of Master Quatre,” Simon told them. “So, you see, they are not to be trifled with. Treat them with all of the respect that you would treat Mr Winner with, because anything less will cost you dearly. I hope that I have made everything clear to you.”

“Yes, sir,” answered Agent Greene. “We understand completely and will do as you say.”

“Good. Then I’ll leave the driving to you, and the security to Heero.” Simon smiled at them, then turned and walked away.

“Mama told me there would be days like this. She didn’t know how right she was, and I bet she never imagined something like this,” muttered the agent to herself, then turned to her partner. “Well, it looks like this job just took an unexpected turn.”

“I guess so,” agreed Agent White, with a rueful shake of her head. “Who would have thought that someone that looked like him would be gay? Well, let’s do like the man said and leave Mr Yuy to take care of his ‘wife’.”

The agents got into the car and waited for their charges.
