Lyri sat in the cockpit with Bulma. She watched her friend as she tinkered with something under the control panel. She heard a slam from elsewhere in the ship and rolled her eyes.
“Did men on your planet ever listen to anyone?” Lyri asked.
“No,” Bulma said, “It must be something all men do. Regardless of their species.”
“So, what are you doing?” Lyri asked.
“The damn navigation system broke. Which is fucking stupid because I coded it myself!” Bulma yelled.
“So we’re just drifting in space?” Lyri asked.
“Kinda...I turned the engines to the lowest setting until I can get it back up,” Bulma told her.
“How long do you think that’ll take?” Lyri asked.
“Hopefully not long,” Bulma told her. Silence crept between the two women. Bulma continued tinkering under the control panel. Lyri leaned her head back and closed her eyes. She thought about what Nix had told her. Specifically, one thing...
“Hey, Bulma,” Lyri said.
“Hmm?” Bulma asked.
“I’m gonna go lay down,” Lyri told her friend.
“You ok?” Bulma asked, pulling herself out from under the control panel.
“Just...still processing everything. It’s tiring,” Lyri told her.
Bulma looked concerned. “You want to talk?”
“Not really,” Lyri told her.
“Ok, but if you ever want to, you know you can talk to me,” Bulma said.
“I know,” Lyri said. She got up and left the cockpit, walking down through the galley. She was stopped by Nix as he walked in the hallway leading to her room.
“Hey,” he said, “You ok?”
“Just thinking,” Lyri told him.
“Mind if I join you on your thinking session?” Nix asked.
“Even if I said that I did mind, you wouldn’t listen,” Lyri told him. She opened the door to her room and walked in. She plopped on her bed and sighed.
Nix lingered around the door. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Lyri didn’t answer. She didn’t really want to talk about her feelings, but maybe talking through her thoughts would help. “I mean...I already told Bulma no...but you probably won’t leave me alone until I do talk...”
“Nope. So, talk,” Nix said, closing the door and sitting next to her.
Lyri asked, “You said you declared yourself king, right?”
“Yeah,” Nix said.
“And now you’re here...” Lyri said.
“Yes...” Nix told her.
“So, Planet Vegeta is...was? I don’t know. They were without a king when you left. And obviously Vegeta is going to step up and be king...” Lyri rambled.
“Yeah, that’s what he’d do, even if the people won’t agree with it,” Nix said.
“He’ll find a way to get the people on his side. If they still are not with him by the time we get back...” Lyri said. She stopped when she realized that the agreement between her and Vegeta was nullified now that he was king.
“What’s the matter?” Nix asked.
“I guess I never thought about what would happen when Vegeta became king. We had never discussed what would happen. I had hoped...” She trailed off, shaking her head, “I’m so stupid.”
“You’re not stupid. You hoped that he would have changed,” Nix told her.
She nodded and sighed. “Like I said, stupid.”
“You’re not stupid. From what you’ve shared and from what I’ve seen, it looks like Vegeta led you on,” Nix said. Lyri sniffed and he wrapped an arm around her. He placed his fingers under her chin and coaxed her to look at him. “You deserve better...” he whispered before gently kissing her.
Lyri sat there shocked for a moment. Her hands moved to Nix’s chest and she pushed him back. Nix looked at her, confused. “Nix...I...I...even though he may not feel the same way...I still love Vegeta.”
“How can you love someone who has treated you like crap?” Nix asked, standing up.
“I just do! You just can’t turn feelings on and off!” Lyri said angrily, “You say I deserve better than Vegeta and that maybe true. But one thing I know for certain is that I deserve better than some guy who is trying to prey on me when I’m vulnerable.”
“You know what? You’re right. You and Vegeta deserve each other,” Nix said as he went to walk out.
“What are you talking about? First you say I deserve better and now we deserve each other? What does that even mean?” Lyri asked.
“You could have simply said that you weren’t ready. Instead, you just had to throw the fact you’re still in love with Vegeta in my face. The person who has used you in everything he’s done. That’s who you’re choosing. Don’t coming running to me when he hurts you again!” Nix snapped before leaving.
Lyri ran to the doorway and yelled after him, “Believe me! I won’t, you fucking prick!” She closed the door only to open it back up and yell, “And I never gave you any indication that I liked you!”
