Chapter Two - Lips
OoooooooO
Duo was grinning from ear to ear as he chatted easily with Sandy, Heero noted with a certain amount of jealousy. He had attempted conversation with his own date (whose name had turned out to be Stephanie), and had found that she wasn’t really all that bad...and under different circumstances they might have been able to be friends.
VERY different circumstances, mind you.
To begin with, Heero would have needed to be social by nature...which he most definitely was not.
As it was turning out, things weren’t looking too bright for Steph, but Heero wasn’t overly concerned. Duo looked like he was connecting with that damn brunette sitting across from him...and he didn’t like it one bit.
He sighed, taking a swig from his beer before leaning back, draping an arm over the back of the booth they were sitting in, and slipping back into his impassive mask. He knew there was nothing he could do to sway Duo’s decision. After all, the braided American had made it painfully obvious two years ago that he was straight.
Heero brought the bottle to his lips again, quickly derailing that train of thought. He chanced a glance at Stephanie, to find that she was glaring darkly at her drink, looking like she was about to kill someone.
The hair on the back of his neck bristled as he felt eyes watching him, and he quickly glanced at Duo, who was glaring at him pointedly. Rolling his eyes, he took another drink before setting the bottle down on the table and touching Stephanie’s arm. “Want to dance?” he asked with an un-interested, quirked eyebrow.
She hesitated for a moment, and Heero had a sneaking suspicion that Sandy kicked her under the table since she winced slightly. His second eyebrow rose as she shot a glare at the brunette before turning to him with an icy nod. “Whatever.”
The stoic student took another sip from his drink before getting to his feet, unable to help noticing the bright grin on Duo’s lips. Perhaps it would be worth it anyway...
Heero was a decent dancer, mostly because Duo had taught him. So, when he and Stephanie got back to the table, she was happy again.
He rolled his eyes at Duo’s ‘I-so-told-you-so’ smirk, and sat down as he reached for his beer. Steph, back in a good mood, was smiling again and chatting with Sandy. This left Heero to sit back and watch as the other three engaged in conversation.
He watched as Duo laughed, he watched as Duo drank, he watched as Duo talked, and he watched as Duo enjoyed himself. He also watched as one of Duo’s arms wound around Sandy’s shoulders, and he watched as the female art student leaned against his best friend’s side. He watched as one of her hands moved to rest gently on Duo’s knee, and he watched as Duo responded by giving her shoulder an affectionate squeeze.
And then suddenly, in the middle of all his watching, Heero felt like he didn’t want to watch anymore. He drained the last of his beer, and then stood, surprising the other three out of their conversation. Without a backwards glance, he turned and walked away from the table, heading towards the exit.
Duo sighed softly as he watched his friend making his way towards the exit. Hiding his frustration, he flashed a grin at the two girls. “Sorry about this, ladies. You’ll have to excuse him. Yuy can be a little tense sometimes...lemme go have a word with him,” he excused himself and got to his feet, leaving two giggling college girls behind him.
He hurried towards the exit and found himself out in the cool night air within a few moments. Duo spotted Heero waiting near the bus stop and with a quirked eyebrow he headed over to his friend.
“Hey man, what’s eatin’ ya?” he asked as he came to a stop beside the short haired brunette. “Steph was just gettin’ interested.”
“Well, I’m not interested in her, Duo,” Heero replied stonily. His Prussian blue eyes were locked on the opposite side of the street. He didn’t dare glance at the braided student beside him. He simply didn’t trust himself not to do something he would regret.
“Geeze, Yuy, how high do you set your standards?! We’ve been livin’ together for nearly two years, and I haven’t once seen you go out on a date. If you’re waiting for the perfect girl, then you gotta try to find her, Heero!” he insisted, using various arm gestures to attempt to prove his point.
Heero, however, remained indifferent to his roommate’s argument as he finally turned his eyes to regard the slightly shorter student, effectively shutting him up. Duo’s mouth clamped shut and his hands stilled. “I’m just not interested in her, Maxwell. Let it drop. I’m going home.”
The braided brunette sighed as he slid his hands into his pockets. “Well...maybe I can find someone else for ya. Someone a little quieter, perhaps?”
Heero rolled his eyes, shifting his gaze to the other side of the street once more. He couldn’t bear to watch those lips moving anymore. He had to get away. Where was the damn bus? “I don’t want you to set me up with anyone else, Duo. When I find someone, I’d prefer it to be on my own terms,” he stated after a short pause.
It was Duo’s turn to roll his eyes as he leaned against the lamp post. “Gods, Heero, why do you have to be so stubborn all the time? Why won’t you just give Steph a chance?”
“I already did, Duo. I don’t like her. In fact, I’m sick and tired of all these girls. They just aren’t my type,” he insisted, mentally pleading with his roommate to read between the lines. If Duo could figure the situation out on his own, that would make his life so much easier.
The braided student frowned slightly, and the short-haired brunet imagined he could see the gears grinding in his roommate’s thick skull.. “Heero...what are you implying?” Duo finally asked, his eyebrows furrowing together.
Heero paused, vainly attempting to calm his racing heart before he spoke: “I’m gay, Duo.”
There, he’d said it. Now Duo knew, and now he wouldn’t have to deal with any more flaky cheerleaders. However, Heero’s sound reasoning didn’t help to ease the sting at Duo’s lack of response.
No more words passed between them. The bus pulled up along the curve, and Heero got on the bus, and Heero paid his bus fare, and the bus drove away.
Duo was left alone on the curb, shocked into silence.
