Chapter 3
YuukiSan: So here the next update. Just as a note I start refering to Rei as \"the midnght-haired\" instead of \"raven-haired\". I\'m letting you know so you don\'t get all confused.
NinjaMouse: Hey give them some credit. They probably would\'ve figured it out.

Chapter 3
“Rei are you sure this is a good idea?” Kiyoshi asked.
“Yes Mama, now go and pack and I’ll make breakfast,” Rei replied as he gently pushed his mother into her room.
“What about Kai?”
“I’ll entertain him as well. Now go pack!” With that the midnight-haired teen turned around and walked into his room to get changed.
Oh I’m sure that you will Kiyoshi thought with a wicked smile.
Rei leaned against the closed door and slid down to the floor.
What was going on in his life? First his breakup with Mariah and now Kai was in his house. He had called Max so that he didn’t have to face Mariah in the village while everything between them was still fresh. He hadn’t anticipated the American to call their ex-captain to come get them. The blond had probably planed a BladeBreaker reunion, which would have been fine by the Chinese if his friend had only informed him first!
He just wasn’t prepared for all the old feelings to come rushing back.
The tiger knew he had a crush on Kai. He had known that ever since the first time he saw the Russian. It could be said that was why Mariah just wasn’t attractive to Rei anymore, though he could never tell her that, or why. Plus the phoenix had been the only male that Rei ever found attractive, so it wasn’t like he was gay. Kai was just an exception.
Besides, it wasn’t as if he was going to do anything about his little crush, since Rei didn’t even know if his former captain liked guys in “that way”.
Well there’s no use dwelling over it Kon, Rei thought to himself as he pushed off the floor.
Even if Kai was interested in guys the tiger knew that he had no chance.

Kai sat in the living room alone waiting for both Kon’s to return. The Russian stood and started to look at the pictures that were spread throughout the room. Each photograph displayed Rei at a different stage of his life.
He was a cute kid, the phoenix thought picking up a picture where the Chinese couldn’t have been older then seven. He was holding a blade proudly in front of him smiling from ear to ear, his gold eyes twinkling.
Course, he’s still cute the former captain thought with a sigh as he replaced the frame on the table.
The duel-haired teen had always had a crush on the neko-jin since they had first met. However, the Russian knew that Rei would never go for him. With the honour and morals that he was raised with the tiger would never fall for a no-good runaway like himself. The midnight-haired teen was too good for him and Kai knew that, which was why he had moved on to Tyson [1]. Unfortunately for him the feelings for Rei had lingered and grown stronger over the years.
Kai was brought out of his thoughts at the sound of someone coming down the stairs. He turned to find the object of his musings standing at the foot of the stairs. The neko-jin was wearing a red shirt with black ties and trim with slim black pants. His hair was brushed and in his white bindings, the bangs held back by his ever-present yin-yang bandana.
“I was going to make some breakfast, you hungry?” the cat-boy asked pointing towards the kitchen.
“Yeah,” was all Kai could muster and mentally cursed himself for it.
Rei nodded and headed into the kitchen. The next moment the clanging of pots and pans could be heard. Kiyoshi walked down the stairs as the phoenix started to look at the pictures again.
“Rei making breakfast?” She asked to the youth’s back.
Her only response was a nod as the blader picked up another frame. The older Kon walked up behind the Russian and peered around his shoulder at the picture in his hands.
The photograph was of Rei and Mariah when he was about seventeen. Both were smiling and it was obvious that they were in a relationship.
“They broke up,” Kiyoshi told Kai.
“What?” The youth asked, looking over his shoulder.
“Rei and Mariah broke up about a week ago. The only reason that picture is still there is because I don’t have another one to put in its place.”
“Put in its place?” Wow conversation is really one of your strong points isn’t it Hiwatari?
“That frame originally had a picture of Rei’s father and I. I want to put in a picture of Rei and whomever he chooses to be with. That one was taken after they got engaged.”
“Engaged…” the blader repeated feeling the colour drain from his face.
“They broke up remember,” Kiyoshi reassured Kai with a wink.
Kai blushed lightly and cursed himself mentally again for letting his guard down.
“Breakfast is ready,” Rei announced, walking into the living room balancing three plates on his arms.
He placed them on the table then dashed back into the kitchen. Seconds later he emerged with three glasses of orange juice. He looked up to find his ex-captain and his mother still standing at the other end of the room.
“Sit, sit, sit, sit,” the tiger said waving them closer.
They all sat at their respective places then Kiyoshi looked down at her plate.
“Kitten, what is this?”
“Eggs and bacon. It’s a traditional Western breakfast,” the midnight-haired blader replied before he took a bite of his toast.
The three ate in relative silence with short and polite conversation every now and then. Kiyoshi noticed how tense both males had become since sitting down and was trying hard not to laugh.
Near the end of the meal, Kai excused himself to use the washroom; the older Kon saw this as her chance. “So how long have you had a crush on Kai?” she asked her son casually.
Rei almost choked on his orange juice, “excuse me?” he spluttered.
“Kitten, I know you heard me.”
Rei’s face turned a shade of red that matched his shirt, “how did you know?” he asked quietly.
“Let’s just say that it’s mother’s intuition,” the deep purple-haired female replied, winking at her son.
Kai returned at that moment, “just to let you know, I’ve arranged for a car to be picking us up within the hour to take us to the airport.”
“I better go pack then,” stated the tiger, not wanting to be around the other male any longer.
Before anyone could say anything he ran up the stairs and out of sight.
“What’s up with him?” Kai asked the older Kon.
“Don’t know,” she replied with a wicked smile.

[1] I noticed that in the pitcures of the first season that I\'ve seen Rei and Kai were kinda...close so to speak. Then in the second and third seasons BOOM Kai was close to Tyson. Don\'t know if anyone else noticed it...might just be my little twisted mind at work.
