“Brother, Colonel Mustang’s niece would like to– oh my... I thought you were working on his leg, not his mouth, Winry,” the boy said connivingly.
“Al, I- er...” Ed tried to explain.
“No, I should’ve knocked..”
“What was it you needed, Al?”Winry asked, since no one else seem able to contain their composure.
“Uh, yeah... Nadine’s awake, and wanted to meet Ed,” Al replied. “Apparently, she’s heard of him.”
“Of course she has!!!” Ed proclaimed.
“Great, just what your ego needs,” the girl mumbled. “More inflation.”
Ed got dressed and walked with Winry and his brother back down to the workshop. The door was open, and the trio saw her trying to walk on her new leg, but also still leaning on the colonel. Only Pinako noticed their arrival.
“Up and around already, huh?” the blonde boy observed.
“She’s been asleep for almost a day,” the older woman told him. “She should start walking on it. You know that.\"
“It’s like every nerve in my leg just noticed its existence,” the girl in question was saying to her uncle.
“Sit back down for awhile,” he told her.
“Alright,” she agreed, and allowed herself to be eased back onto the cot.
“Nadine,” Pinako said. “There’s someone here you wanted to meet.”
The girl looked attentively in the direction of the door. If this was Edward, he was just as her uncle had described him, short and blonde. She decided not to bring that up, not knowing what his temper might do.
“Nice to meet ya, I’m Edward Elric,” the teen introduced himself, offering an outstretched hand.
“Nadine Mustang,” she replied, taking his hand. “And the pleasure is mine, if what I’ve heard about you is true.”
Ed laughed nervously. “Depends. What’d you hear?”
She began to count off on her fingers. “That you can do alchemy without circles, you can turn your automail arm into a weapon, blatantly piss off my uncle, and are well-liked among most civilians.”
“Yup! That’s me!”
“I saw when you and Uncle Roy battled. I was just getting into alchemy at the time, and to see someone my age already so well at it...” She blushed. “It was amazing.”
Ed turned red as well and laughed, feeling Winry’s eyes burning a hole into his backside. “Well, thanks,” he told her. “But I still think only Mustang should’ve had to clean up. He made most of the mess.”
Roy hit him with a hard gaze that rivaled Winry’s. “Really, Fullmetal? And who made the request to battle in the first place, hmm?”
Ed chose to change the subject. “So Nadine, you practice alchemy as well?”
“Yes, but all I can do so far is simple transmutations,” she replied. “It’s taking a but longer than I would like to learn.”
“But it’s gatta be worth it every time you see a transmutation go smoothly,” Ed guessed.
She smiled. “Yeah, it really is. But if only I had someone helping me, even just a little bit...”
Ed got the message, but decided to avoid it. “Er, Mustang doesn’t help you?” he asked.
“He’s always busy.”
“I assist you whenever it’s possible,” the colonel defended himself.
Nadine ignored him. “Please, Ed, will you help me? Even just a little?”
Ed sweatdropped. “But... uh... what makes you think I’m any less busy than he is? I’m a State Alchemist too, ya know.”
She looked crestfallen. “That’s a ‘no,’ huh?”
Suddenly, Al’s quiet voice piped up. “I- I can help you, if you want. I know I’m Ed, but I know quite a bit about alchemy myself.”
“Al That’d be wonderful ” Nadine said happily. “How long are you two staying here?”
“Depends how long it takes Winry to finish my damn limbs,” Ed mumbled. A shiny metal wrench immediately collided with his head.
