Chapter two

“Wow! Just look at all that snow!” Tyson pressed his hands against the window, gazing out over the white city.

“It must have snowed during the night,” Max said, following Tyson’s example and pressed his nose against the window.

The Bladebreakers were in Kai’s and Ray’s room with absolutely nothing to do. Or, everybody except Ray that is. The tiger were pacing the entire room, musing about something good to say to Mariah before she left.

‘Mariah, we’ve known each other for a long time now, and I just wanted to tell you how much you mean to me... no, not good enough. Hm... Mariah, I don’t know if you feel the same way about me as I do about you, but... no! Too lame! Ah! Why has this gotta be so goddamn difficult?!’

“Calm down, Ray,” a soft voice said from his right, “you’re worrying too much.” Ray turned against Kai who was leaning against the wall in his trademark manor, eyes closed. Crimson orbs opened and Ray saw the amused sparkle in them.

“Easy for you to say, Kai,” he muttered. “You’re not the one who’s going to tell your childhood friend that you love her.” Ray furrowed his eyebrows. After his last words had been spoken, Kai had flinched and his eyes had widened slightly. He almost looked... hurt? He was just about to ask Kai if something was wrong, when Tyson and Max suddenly appeared by his side, their eyes sparkling with amusement.

“So, you’re gonna tell Mariah that you love her?” Max smiled, his big blues glittering teasingly. Ray blushed, forgetting all about Kai for a moment, and looked a bit shyly at his friends.

“Well... uhm... yeah,” he stuttered out.

“About time you do, pal!” Tyson smirked, while patting Ray on the shoulder. “Way to go, buddy!”

Ray smiled at them before he glanced at Kai’s direction. He blinked surprised when he noticed that he was gone.

-------------------

Kai had sneaked out of the hotel as soon as Max and Tyson had thrown themselves over Ray. He had gone to the hotel’s garden, now leaning against a large frozen tree. Ray’s words had hit him like a gunshot through his heart, even though Ray was unaware of it.
He slid down alongside the trunk with a deep sigh. He sat down on the cold ground and picked up Dranzer from his pocket. The beyblade began to shine brightly in his hand. He smiled sadly.

“You remember her too, don’t you, Dranzer?” he said softly. In a bright red light the majestic phoenix appeared from her bit and landed in front of him. She flapped her wings a few times before bending her head down towards him and gently stroking her beak against his hand. She squawked lovingly, the bright eyes watching him with concern.
Kai sighed and wrapped his arms around her head, holding the phoenix close to him.

“I just miss her so much,” he whispered against the fiery feathers. She cooed softly, offering her love and comfort. Kai didn’t make a sound, but Dranzer felt the tears that made her feathers all wet. The bitbeast felt her master’s pain and agony, the hurtful feelings flooded into her heart and she felt sorry for his sake.

Kai quickly wiped away his tears with the back of his hand. Dranzer watched him silently, her shiny eyes staring into his blood red orbs.

“It’s no use crying,” he muttered. “Nothing will change anyway.”

Dranzer cooed slowly, her eyes sad.

“Don’t look at me that way, Dranzer. It’s alright.” Kai smiled slightly as he ruffled the feathers on her head lovingly. “Now return.”

Dranzer flapped her wings before she slowly began to fade away into a glittering bright red light. Kai felt her warmth spread in his hand through the beyblade as she returned to her bit.

“Thank you, my friend,” Kai whispered softly before putting Dranzer back into his pocket. He got to his feet and began to walk back to his room.

Meanwhile, Ray was standing on the airport with the White Tigers. Lee embraced him and the two friends held each other hard. As they pulled apart, Lee smiled widely.

“This is not a goodbye, my friend,” he said. “We will see each other again.”

“Soon,” Ray smiled.

“See ya, Ray!” Kevin smirked before entering the gate together with Gary. Ray smiled after them, but then he turned his eyes to Mariah and his smile slowly faded. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears and she held her hands tightly against her chest.

“Mariah, it’s time,” Lee said softly to his younger sister.

“Yes, I know,” she whispered. “Just one moment, please?”

“Of course.” Lee stepped aside to wait for her.

Mariah sighed lightly and then began to slowly approach Ray. Ray watched her every move. She looked like a woman in a dream. She stopped in front of him, eyes glued to the floor.

“I…” she began but her voice trailed off. Ray’s heart bled for her when he noticed that she was shaking with silent sobs.

“Mariah…” he said softly and she looked up and met his eyes. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her amber eyes shined with tears. And before he could react she threw her arms around his waist.

“Please, Ray,” she whispered. He sighed sadly as he placed a hand on her head, gently caressing her hair, as tears began to form in his eyes.

“Mariah, we have to go now,” Lee said sadly.

“Wait, Lee, just one more minute, please,” Ray said pleadingly. Lee sighed and nodded.

Ray bit his lip as he held her close. And then he realized. If he didn’t tell her now, he would loose her – maybe forever.

“I don’t want you to leave,” he whispered. “Stay.”

Mariah gasped and her eyes widened. He felt her hands clutch the fabric of his white Chinese outfit on his shoulders.

“Stay with me,” he whispered. His heart wouldn’t stop racing.

“Why?” The word was a mere whisper.

Ray took a deep breath and pulled her away a bit so he could look into her eyes.

“Because I love you, Mariah.”

Mariah stared at him for a moment and then she smiled through the tears.

“Somehow…” she said softly. “I think I always knew. Yet still could I never imagine that you would say those sweet words to me.”

Ray smiled warmly. Mariah cupped his cheek, tears slowly rolling down her cheeks.

“I love you, Ray,” she said with all the love in the world in her sweet voice. Ray pulled her into a loving embrace, holding her close to his chest. She tilted her head up at him and his lips pressed softly against hers. She had never felt anything like it before. She forgot everything around them. She didn’t mind her brother watching, she didn’t care about the people who watched them curiously. Nothing else mattered except the two of them, they were alone in the universe, surrounded by each others love.

They pulled away slightly, still not noticing anything except each other. They didn’t even notice Lee walking up to them with a happy, yet still sad smile.

“I see that you have made up your mind, little sister,” he said sadly.

“Lee,” Mariah whispered as she turned to face her older brother. Lee smiled lovingly at her and placed his hands on her shoulders.

“You’ve made your choice. It’s alright.”

“But… what about the team?” Mariah wondered. Lee waved it away.

“Don’t worry, we’ve decided to take a break anyway.” Mariah lit up in a wide smile and embraced her brother.

“Thanks, Lee,” she whispered. Lee smiled at her and then turned to Ray.

“Take care of her,” he said before turning and heading to the gate. The young couple watched him disappear inside the gate. Mariah smiled as she leaned her head against Ray’s chest, tears rolled down her cheeks again.

“Do you have second thoughts?” Ray wondered worriedly. Mariah looked up at him, smiled and shook her head.

“No,” she said softly. “I know I made the right decision.”

Tyson and Max were playing cards and Kenny was typing on his laptop – as usual, when the door to their room opened and Mr Dickenson entered, with Ray and Mariah by his side.

“Mariah!” Tyson and Max called out in unison.

“What are you doing here?” Kenny wondered. “Wasn’t you supposed to leave with your team back to China?”

“There has been a change of plans,” Mr Dickenson explained.

“Eh?”

“Hey, guys, Mariah’s staying here with us,” Ray exclaimed proudly. Mariah’s cheeks turned slightly pink and Ray wrapped his arm tightly around her waist.

“Really?!” Max’s eyes began to sparkle with joy. Mariah nodded graciously at him.

“But, hey, where’s Kai?” Ray asked, looking around the room for their leader. “We wanted to tell him the good news.”

“I bet he’s out training or something,” Tyson said without looking up from his cards. “You know he always goes away without telling us. He’ll be back soon. Ah! No!! I lost again!!”

“However, I have other news for you,” Mr Dickenson said after sitting down in front of them on the sofa. “I’m sorry to inform you that our plan back to Japan has been delayed because of some need of reparation.”

“Can’t we just take another plan, Mr Dickenson?” Max wondered.

“Unfortunately not. There aren’t too many plane rides to Japan from Russia.”

“Well, can’t the BBA rent a plan for us then?” Tyson exclaimed.

“Are you out of your mind?!” Kenny cried out. “Do you have any idea how much it costs to rent a jet?”

“Kenny’s right,” Ray added. “It’s a waste of money. We can stay here in Russia for a few more days, can’t we? It’s not like we’re in a hurry back home.”

“Yeah… you’re probably right…” Tyson murmured.

“I’m afraid those ‘few days’ will be quite longer than that, Ray,” Mr Dickenson sighed. The old man immediately got everybody’s attention.

“What do you mean, Mr Dickenson?” Ray asked.

“I’ve talked with the people on the airport and obviously they need to order in some new parts to the engines of the plane.”

“But that could take weeks!” Kenny cried out. “Can’t the airline company send another plane?”

“Well… it really is a small company… And besides, they promised me it wouldn’t take more than two weeks.”

Everyone in the room sweatdropped.

“So we’re stuck here in Russia?” Mariah stated slowly.

“Unfortunately, yes.” Mr Dickenson slowly rose from his seat and walked up to the door. “I’m really sorry, kids, but I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do.”

“It’s alright, Mr Dickenson,” Tyson assured. “Besides, I just love Russian food! This gives me a little more time to try all the restaurants in Moscow!”

Everyone in the room sweatdropped again and fell over anime-style.

“What?”

The next day…

It was unusually cold outside, colder than it used to be, even for Moscow. A young woman stood outside the grand hotel. She watched it calmly but her sapphire coloured eyes were sparkling with emotion.

“Hotel Winter Palace…” she whispered silently to herself. ‘They told me this was the place they were staying at.’ She shivered when an icy wind blew by and she wrapped her long jacket around her tighter before walking in through the large glass doors. She walked up to the receptionist’s desk. A middle-aged woman looked kindly at her.

“Welcome to Hotel Winter Palace,” she said in broken English. “How may I be of service?”

“I came here to meet Mr Stanley Dickenson,” the young woman answered softly.

“Have you an appointment with him?”

“No, not really, but it is of great importance that I meet him.” The girl looked pleadingly at the older woman. The receptionist looked like she was struggling inside whether to allow her meet Mr Dickenson or not. She picked up her phone and dialled a number.

“Just a minute, please.”

The young woman looked around as the receptionist was talking to someone on the other line. It really was a magnificent hotel. The whole building was an exact copy of the Winter palace; it even had the same name. She turned her attention back to the receptionist as she put away the phone.

“Mr Dickenson is ready to see you,” she smiled. “Please, come with me and I’ll show you to him.” The girl returned her smile before she followed the older woman towards the elevators. They went up a few floors before walking down a long corridor. Eventually they reached a door where the woman stopped and knocked before opening the door. She turned to the girl before entering.

“Please wait here.” She disappeared into the room and the girl could hear a conversation going on inside. She waited patiently until the receptionist appeared again.

“Mr Dickenson’s waiting for you,” she said and held up the door for her.

“Thank you so much, madame,” the young woman said gratefully and entered the room. The door closed silently behind her. She took of her jacket and stepped into the large room where an old man was waiting for her.

“Ah, so you’re the one who wanted to see me?” the older man stated. The girl looked at him thoughtfully. He seemed to be a very kind man. He reminded her of a grandfather, who everybody loved. She decided to like him from the start.

“Please forgive my impoliteness for disturbing you, sir,” the girl said silently, bowing her head in respect.

“Don’t mention it, child. Now, tell me why you’ve come here to meet me. But first, why don’t you tell me your name?”

“My name’s Kisara Petrovna, or… now it’s Kisara Aino.”

“Beautiful name. And why have you come, Kisara Aino?” Mr Dickenson looked at her curiously. Kisara swallowed hard, afraid her voice would fail her.

“To meet Kai,” she answered, her eyes shimmering with tears. Mr Dickenson frowned. This girl didn’t look like one of those Kai-fans that were constantly chasing after the poor boy. But you never knew.

“And why do you want to meet Kai?” he asked suspiciously, his eyes narrowed slightly. He couldn’t see her face since she kept her head down though.

“Because… I…”

Her voice was so soft that Mr Dickenson hardly could hear what she was saying. Then she looked up and Mr Dickenson saw the tears that cascaded down her cheeks.

“I grew up… in the abbey… with Kai.”
