Some Kind of Dream
He was here, again. His eyes were glued to the place where Kakarott should be. He should be here, right? Why wasn’t he here? He could feel him, around him, touching his skin, whispering in his ear.
‘I think you should leave.’
‘I’m not real.’
He snorted and pushed back the branch of the tree he sat in, quietly waiting and watching for him. He waited for Kakarott. Reflecting back, he realized he’d waited for him for a long time. Maybe he’d been waiting since they’d first met.
“Kakarott….” The word pushed from his lips, hanging in the still night air. Where was he?
As if in answer, arms curled around him from behind. Hot breath grazed across his ear. “Vegeta, tonight you will remember.”
Vegeta started, trying to move, to whirl around and break the hold. The arms tightened almost painfully. “What are you talking about?!”
The voice chuckled from behind him. “You’ve forgotten. You can’t bear that I’m right, that I’ve left you. So you forgot what happened. Don’t you remember? I’m dead.”
“Shut up!” He yelled it, bursting into Super Saiyajin, but it did not break the hold.
The voice instead chuckled again. “Poor Vegeta. Delusional. That’s what they said about you, you know. They said you were delusional. Who found you last night? Trunks? Bra? They took you home and tucked you into bed like a child.”
He growled and went to the second level, to no avail. The idiot behind him wasn’t even powered up!
“Idiot?”
He froze then. He hadn’t said that aloud.
The voice chuckled again. “I know you didn’t. I told you, you’re delusional. I’m a figment of your imagination. I’m not real.”
“Stop it!”
He could feel something breaking, cracking within him. He could hear it, right in his ear, right where Kakarott whispered.
The voice chuckled again. Was it Kakarott, not Kakarott? How could he tell?
“Vegeta….” The voice practically purred in his ear, and a wet, hot tongue traced over his lobe.
He sucked in a breath, feeling it shoot straight to his groin. “Kakarott! Don’t!”
The voice chuckled again. “Why not? Don’t you want this?” He licked at the ear again.
Vegeta squirmed. “I-if you’re not real—”
“If?” The voice sounded highly amused. It made Vegeta’s teeth grind.
“—then how can we do this? How can I feel you?”
“I told you, Vegeta. You’re delusional. You’re going nuts. Crazy. The children talk. They’re afraid you’re going to hurt yourself. They’ll stick you in a white room with padded walls.”
“No! They’re not saying that! They wouldn’t do that! I’m not crazy!”
“But I’m dead, Vegeta. Don’t you remember? I died—”
“Shut up!” He burst outwards, exploding with ki. The arms vanished and he was falling forward, hitting the ground with a thud and an expulsion of air.
It didn’t hurt. The tree wasn’t that tall, and he was by no means weak.
He flipped onto his back, staring up at nothing. Kakarott was nowhere to be seen. But he could smell him…. He could feel the tingle where his arms pressed against him, feel the warmth and heat of where his tongue had been. He could feel his erection pressing demandingly against his pants.
He lay there, staring up at the sky.
“Kakarott?”
* * *
“Kakarott?”
No…why did he keep doing this? He wasn’t there. He wasn’t behind him. He just had to not look and he’d go away.
“This is it. Tonight. Tonight I will be unsalvageable. Why won’t you help me?”
He pressed his lips thinly together, staring out ahead at the empty space between the dragon’s antlers, staring out at nothing.
“Kakarott, you’re such a beautiful statue. I saw a statue that looked like you once. It just sat there staring ahead at nothing. I could see its eyes. It saw nothing. It did nothing.”
He shifted slightly, just moved one leg into a more comfortable position. That was all.
“Ah, he moves!” The voice sounded with forced humor, then stillness behind him. Had he left?
“Kakarott?” The sound of his name in that tone, pleading, hitched. It wasn’t Vegeta. “Kakarott…please…. You don’t understand. You don’t know. If you look at me…if you say my name, I’ll hear you. I’ll hear you and everything will be okay. Please…just turn your head, speak my name.”
‘Let me see him.’
The dragon’s head turned slowly, staring first at him, then at something beyond him, behind him. “It is not allowed.”
‘Please let me see him. What if something bad is happening?’
The dragon stared at him. “I do not understand.”
Goku’s mouth formed a pout, the edges curling down in displeasure. ‘I—’
“Kakarott, please…I can’t see you. I can’t hear you. Please don’t leave me again!”
His eyes widened at the change. The voice was so desperate. It needed him…. Vegeta needed him. But….
“Kakarott…. You’re never coming back are you? You lied. You’re dead, and you’re not coming back. Why? Why did you leave me?
“Kakarott! Please! Please don’t do this…. Please….”
He swallowed hard, his eyes wide, his body trembling. It wouldn’t hurt anything if he turned, would it? It wouldn’t really do anything. He could turn.
The continued silence behind him made him swallow again, and his head turned in slow motion, until he was facing toward where the voice was.
He blinked. Vegeta was not there. But he could see…a hole. There was a jagged and shifting hole there, the edges constantly changing, moving in waves. He could see into the hole.
He stood and walked toward it, bending over to peer at the scene. He tentatively reached out a hand, expecting it to sink into the scenery or touch something solid. Instead it went through the space, as if nothing was there. He drew back his hand, letting out a breath as he stared at the scene.
Vegeta was laying face up on the ground, staring above him at the trees. He was in a clearing that looked awfully familiar. He blinked slowly. He used to train there….
But…what was Vegeta doing there? Goku couldn’t hear anything….
He leaned forward slightly, crouching before the hole, his hands to either side of it on the dragon’s back. “Vegeta?”
He watched with wide eyes as the other suddenly jerked up, looking wildly around, his own mouth opening to spill out…well, something. Goku still couldn’t hear. He watched though, as Vegeta’s head turned this way and that, as his expression changed to one of—well whatever it was…it wasn’t happy.
“I can’t hear you.” He felt silly, talking like this to a hole. But he was heartened when Vegeta again responded. Although he looked more frustrated now, his brow furrowed and his lips thinned. His mouth moved and he glanced around, eyes never really focusing on where Goku was.
“I…Vegeta? I can see you…. What….” He couldn’t ask him any questions. He couldn’t even—
‘Kakarott…. You’re never coming back are you? You lied. You’re dead, and you’re not coming back. Why? Why did you leave me?’
“Vegeta!” He watched as the head turned this way and that again, as the mouth formed a question. “Vegeta, I’m coming back! I didn’t lie to you. I’m not dead. Remember? The dragon took me away to protect the dragonballs. I said I’d be back….”
He watched as a mixture of expressions crossed the Saiyajin’s face, from doubt to surprise, to dawning horror. Vegeta didn’t move though, just sat there, staring ahead of him with wide eyes.
“V-Vegeta? What’s wrong?” He paused. “I mean…are you okay? Just…nod or something….”
Slowly Vegeta’s head shook side to side, the head again swiveling around. The mouth moved, but there was no way Goku could catch the words, even though the sentence wasn’t long.
“I can’t hear you…. I…I can’t reach you….”
He saw Vegeta go still then, staring ahead of him again before his shoulders lifted and then fell again. The head dropped again, just enough that Goku couldn’t see his expression anymore.
He turned from the scene. “I have to go to him!”
The dragon’s head turned slowly, looking at him with an expression that was both sad and wise. ‘You are not done with your task.’
Goku shook his head, his own face grieved. “Please…I’m sorry but I have to. He’s…he’s my friend. And something is wrong!”
‘It is not in my power to do so.’
Goku’s fists suddenly slammed into the dragon’s back. “I have to!”
The dragon did not flinch. The flesh under Goku hadn’t even moved. Shenron stared at him for a moment longer, and then slowly turned back around.
