Chapter 3
“Where is that boy?” an angry voice yelled. An alarm started to sound.
“Shit, what’s going on, Tala?” a deep, sleep filled voice asked.
“To hell if I know, Spencer. Boris is probably just pissed off with one of us again,” came the quick reply.
“ALL STUDENTS REPORT TO THE MESS HALL AT ONCE!!” a voice rang over the intercom.
“Bryan, wake up,” Tala said as he shook his friend. The lilac haired young man opened his eyes, “where’s Ian?” he asked.
“Oh shit not again,” Tala slapped his palm against his forehead. This was the third time this month their smallest friend, Ian, had tried to escape. The three boys got dressed and ran down to the mess hall. All the other students in the abbey were currently lining up and waiting for role call. Tala, brushed his flaming red hair out of his face and rubbed the sleep out of his blue eyes. As leader of their team he had to be ready in case he was questioned.
“He took off again that little Imp,” Bryan said angrily. Bryan, who had lilac hair and eyes, was very pissed off. Since he was the best tracker, in the abbey, he would have to go after the kid and bring him back.
“Go easy on him, Bryan,” Spencer said. Spencer was tall with dirty blonde hair and bright crystal eyes.
“Why should I?” Bryan asked, “this is the third time this month.”
“Shhh,” Tala hushed. The three stood up straight. Their boss, Boris Balkov was currently checking over all the boys to see who was missing.
“You know perfectly well why he keeps taking off,” Tala whispered to Bryan, who was still fuming.
“I know, he should just give it up,” Bryan whispered back, “he’ll never find them.” The two boys felt Spencer tap then both, a sign to shut up because Boris was heading towards them. Boris was a tall man with dark purple hair and a stern, hard face. All 3 of the boys hated him, he teaching and discipline methods were both harsh and cruel.
“Tala,” he said calmly, staring at the red head.
“Yes sir,” he replied.
“Where is Ian?” the man asked.
“I don’t know sir, he was in his bed the last time I checked and..” Tala wasn’t able to finish, for Boris’ hand connected with his face in a quick slap.
“Do not lie to me boy,” the sheer poison in his words caused Tala to shake.
“He’s not lying sir,” Bryan spoke up.
“Really, well then I expect you to find the child and return him,” Boris said, “I will deal with him in the morning.” Boris nodded to one of the guards who yelled, “Dismissed.”
Everyone returned to their rooms save Spencer, Tala, and Bryan.
“Asshole,” Tala hissed.
“He could have done a lot worse,” Spencer said taking Tala by the hand and helping him to his feet.
“Not him… Ian,” Tala spat.
“Why you say that?” Bryan questioned.
“Doesn’t he realize what’s going to happen to him when you find him?” the red head yelled.
“Another beating,” Spencer answered for Bryan, who was looking at the floor.
“Exactly,” Tala said, “that kid has been through enough.” They all knew what Tala meant by this. Ian, unlike the rest of them, had a caring family who loved him and when Ian was five Boris had taken him away from them and put him in the abbey.
“Relax, Tala. Ian will be alright,” Bryan said. He started to heads to the door to find the little Imp.
“What are you planning, Bryan?” the wolf asked.
“Don’t worry,” the falcon said, he left Tala and Spencer to go find Ian.
‘Come on Ian, keep going,’ the short young man thought to himself. Ian had crimson brown eyes and blue/purple hair, he might have been 18 but he was extremely short for his age. Ian stopped running and listened, he could hear the alarm in the distance.
‘Shit,’ he thought, ‘they already know I’m gone.’ He began running again, all the while thinking of the promise he made to someone he loved.
FLASHBACK
“Big sister,” he called out. He ran to the pretty little girl and hugged her.
“Happy birthday, Ian,” she said kissing his forehead.
“Ewww sister germs,” he yelled rubbing the spot. His sister just laughed at him.
“You’re five today little brother. I want you to have this,” she removed the diamond shaped locket from around her neck and placed it in his hands.
“Really,” Ian asked, “but this is yours, you never take it off.” He opened it to find a picture of his brother and sister.
“I know but I want to hold onto it for me,” she replied, “I changed the pictures so you will always remember us.”
“Big brother,” he said, tears began filling his eyes. It had been over a year since their brother was taken from them.
“Don’t cry Ian. We still have each other,” she said.
“Not for long,” Ian replied. His sister’s face fell, their parents had found a training school for Ian to go to. They felt that it would be safest for him, since their home was still under siege from the surrounding areas.
“I know but we’ll be together again someday right?” she asked.
“Right,” Ian assured her.
“Promise?” she pressed.
“Pinky promise,” Ian replied. They locked their little fingers together and smiled.
“Whenever you’re scared just think of us okay,” his sister said pulling him close in a hug. The man who was coming for Ian had just arrived.
“I will, always,” Ian said.
“I love you Ian,” her voice shook.
“I love you too,” he replied. They broke away from each other. The purple haired man took Ian by the shoulder and led him to the car.
“Don’t forget your promise,” she called.
“Never,” he called back, holding up his pinky with one hand and grasping the locket with the other.
END FLASHBACK
Ian once again stopped. He pulled out the locket and looked at the pictures inside.
“I miss you both,” he said sadly. Ian’s head jerked up as he listened again. He could now hear the sound of a motor.
“Shit,” he said aloud. He knew that sound all to well, it was Bryan’s motorbike. The falcon was tracking him again.
‘No, not again,’ Ian thought. He knew what would happen. Bryan would catch him. He always did. Then he would take him back to Boris who would beat him until he promised not to run away again. In his frantic thinking, Ian didn’t hear the motor shut off and soft footsteps come towards him until it was too late.
“Ian,” Bryan said.
“Shit,” Ian yelled, he whipped around only to be caught face to face with the falcon. He quickly returned the locket to his pocket.
“I won’t go back,” he yelled, “you can’t make me.”
“Ian, listen to me,” Bryan said calmly. He took a step towards the boy.
“No,” Ian yelled, he began to cry. He didn’t care If Bryan seen. He wasn’t going back to that place.
“Ian, what’s wrong?” Bryan was shocked. He had never seen Ian like this. He felt a pain in his chest for the small boy.
“He’ll beat me again. I have to find them. I promised,” these confused statements worried Bryan. Ian was a mess.
“Shhh I won’t let him hurt you,” Bryan pulled Ian into a hug. Ian sobbed against Bryan’s chest. Bryan could feel Ian trembling.
“Come back with me, Ian,” he said. Ian tried to pull away.
“Let me go,” he demanded.
“Ian calm down. Look, listen to me for a minute,” Bryan raised his voice. Ian stopped struggling and looked up at Bryan.
“Boris won’t hurt you when we get back. I’ll make sure of it. You can trust me,” the falcon said gently. Ian wasn’t sure what was happening. Bryan was such a hard ass and didn’t really care about anyone, except Ian, Tala, and Spencer.
“Alright Bryan, I’ll go back with you on one condition,” the small boy requested.
“What’s that?” Bryan asked. He could just imagine what Ian would ask probably to ride his motorbike back to the abbey.
“If we ever get out of that hell hole, you have to promise to help me find my family,” Ian locked eyes with Bryan. The falcon didn’t see that one coming. Ian must really have faith in him to ask him that.
“Ian, I promise.”
Tala: Ohhhhh that was so cute Bry.
Bryan: Fuck you Tala.
Winter-Rae: I love that chapter so much!
Bryan: You would. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up too.
Winter-Rae: *smiles innocently* Me? I have no idea what you mean.
Tala: Don’t forget to review. Hey why is my part so small?
Winter-Rae: Don’t worry. I, have plans for you.
Tala: Me and my big mouth.
Winter-Rae: Don’t forget to tell me what you guys think of my Bryan/Garland idea.
