Death and His Pilot
Chapter Three
A firm hand shook him awake several hours later, which turned out to belong to the man, Yami. ‘Shinigami will be arriving soon. I’ve had some better clothes made while you slept.’
Heero was handed a bundle of black cloth as soon as he had gotten out of the bed. Unfolding it, he discovered a thigh length tunic with sleeves as well as a pair of loose leggings. Noting Heero’s reluctance to change with him watching, Yami shook his head in amusement and turned his back to the boy. Removing his shirt, Heero clutched the new pendent briefly in hopes that he would be able to return to Duo. It was tucked under the tunic before Yami turned around, hidden from sight.
‘Oh, leave those here. You won’t need them,’ Yami said, taking Heero’s shoes from him as he tried to put them on. Satisfied, the man picked Heero up despite his protests, and began to carry him into the hallway.
Heero stopped his struggles as he stared down into the empty column, only it wasn’t so empty anymore. Hundreds of creatures quite literally flocked the space, nearly all of them heading in the same direction. Even with the lack of room there was to fly in, they gave plenty to Yami as he passed, many calling out greetings that even Heero, uncomprehending of the language, could tell were highly respectful. It was soon that he led the flock, keeping a careful hold on his small charge.
‘He’s been sighted,’ a man informed Yami when they landed. Heero was once again set to the floor. The place resembled a spaceport, but there were no air locks and the few ships present were unlike anything Heero had ever seen. There was one exception though. In the dock closest to the opening of the port, there was a ship Heero recognized, having seen the sketches of it sometimes present on Duo’s work. ‘Who is the child? What is he?’
‘I’m hoping that my brother may know,’ Yami said, metallic eyes scanning the stars. ‘Two students came upon him in the hallway, and he does not understand tongues.’
‘Strange,’ the other man murmured.
All at once, nearly every eye turned to the mouth of port. Following the collective gaze, Heero gasped, for there, flying on black wings, was the man from the painting, the one he was sure was Duo.
He landed in front of Yami, and the two men shared a brotherly embrace. Heero could not take his eyes from the towering double of his lover.
‘How was your mission, Shinigami?’ Yami asked, clapping the other man on the shoulder.
Shinigami grinned. He was about to answer when Heero gasped out in pain, clutching his chest as his legs suddenly failed to support him. An unfamiliar instinct took over the violet-eyed man as he swooped down to catch the boy, the movement causing Heero’s locket to fall out of the front of his tunic. At the contact, Heero’s pain began to ease, nearly fading from existence.
Danger apparently passed, Shinigami glanced down at the boy with curiosity, startled with how delicate he was, too fragile than any race had the right to be. ‘What is he, Yami?’
The elder brother sighed. ‘I was hoping that you would have known. He says that his name is Heero, but that was all I could find out. Even if I wanted to risk his frame with an interrogation, I would not understand him, nor he my questions. Two students found him in the corridors, but it would seem that he does not understand tongues, so they brought him to me. When he saw the painting in our study, he was quite startled to see your image, as though he recognized you.’
The two brown-haired males stared at each other. It felt right for Heero to be in Shinigami’s arms, and neither seemed to want to change that situation. It wasn’t for several moments more that Shinigami tore his eyes away from the blue ones. ‘I can take care of him for the time being, brother. Perhaps our sister will know his kind? Tenshi spends more of her time among mortals, and I think he is one. If not, then at least Hikari will have a new playmate for a while, and Youkai a new species to study.’
Heero was held against his shoulder and carried like a child, an act that severely irritated the Japanese pilot. The double had even sounded like Duo, and he, he felt like him. There was a similar, deadly warmth, like that that floated around his lover.
‘You certainly seem to be getting attached to him already, little brother,’ Yami said with a soft laugh. The volume rose as Heero wrapped the end of Shinigami’s braid firmly around his fist, holding onto it possessively. ‘And you’re not the only one either.’
Shinigami looked up from where he had returned to staring at his new charge with a sigh. ‘I don’t know what it is about him, but there’s something… there’s something in his that calls out to me, and Yami, my soul wants to answer him. It’s all very confusing.’
When they once again reached the column hallway, Heero found himself fascinated with Shinigami’s wings as they lifted into the air. The braided man laughed at the awe filled expression Heero wore, grinning a grin all too familiar to him.
