Chapter 3; Ready, steady, GO!
Ed opened the hood of his favourite, fiery, red and black racer and checked the wiring. He smiled satisfied with his work and pulled the hood down.
It was almost 10 o’clock at night and already tons of people had gathered to stand on the street, all there to get to see some nice and juicy street action. Ed looked around at the crowded street and tried to figure out what to do next. He could just stand there by his car and look cool but…no. That would be just stupid, so he decided to join the party going on and see how much different it was from street races in Risembool.
First things first, there were at least five times the crowd and three times more cars parked around. The air was filled with the sound of music and high base when drivers compared the loudspeakers in the back of their cars. All around you could hear cars being revved up.
In Risembool the people who raced were the daredevils of the town and the crowd their girlfriends, amateur mechanics or guys who tried to act though but didn’t have the balls to drive. Compared to Central, Risembool was a kiddie-grade.
The crowd was colourful with drug dealers, pimps, sluts, gamblers betting on the race, players looking for a good lay, and drivers there to race or just show of their pimped up cars.
Ed felt like he was in his element but was still uncomfortable when watching how a sleazily dressed woman sat on top of the hood of a car with a guy between her bare legs.
”So, baby, if I win this race, how about we get a little freaky in my jacuzzi?" He asked.
"If you win, I’ll even bring my friend along with me.” She smiled playfully.
Ed rolled his eyes in disgust as they started to grope each other once again, wishing they would get a damn room.
He suddenly spotted Winry, a passionate mechanic to whom he had been introduced that same afternoon. She was a nice girl but Havoc had told him she wasn’t into men. Ed guessed she was there because she was the only mechanic allowed under the hood of Roy’s cars and Ed knew Roy be racing tonight. Ed was however surprised to see Riza, figuring she was keeping a watch for the cops while speaking into a walky talky.
After many drug offers, sexually oriented offers, and short-jokes he chose to ignore, he spotted Roy Mustang. Seeing how Roy was one of the best racers in Central it was only natural he was surrounded by women with their hands all over his body and trying to look their most attractive to get the lead racers attention.
Ed couldn’t blame them. Roy did look kind of stylish with a white wife beater on and black baggy jeans. Simple but sexy. It said loud and clear: I’m a bad boy! Take me now!
Ed gave an annoyed look when Roy noticed him and smirked arrogantly. He whispered something to one of the girls, making her blush and giggle. The rest seemed disappointed when Roy left them and slowly walked over to Ed with his hands in his pockets.
”I hear through the grapevine that some cute blond has entered the race tonight. Hmm, I wonder…" he said, pretending to think, "…who could that be?"
”Who are you calling cute Colonel-bastard?!”
”Kids should know when to stay home and be content with playing on their Nintendo and leave the real races to men.”
”That’s it! I hope you can drive with a broken nose! Hey!” Ed yelled out when someone grabbed him the back of his collar and pulled him backwards. Riza looked from Ed to Roy in a disapproving manner. ”Play nice, Colonel.” She warned and Roy chuckled and walked away. Ed was going to lung after him but was pulled in the opposite direction by Riza. ”I hope you the radiator in your car works better than the one in your head. The race is about to start so you have to get your car to the line.”
By this time they had reached Ed’s racer. He opened the driver’s seat and slid in, closing the door behind him. Ed slid the window down so he could talk to Riza.
”Good luck, Edward. I’ll be rooting for you,” she said, lightly tapping the roof of Ed’s car.
”Thanks Riza,” he said before rolling up the window and manoeuvring his way through the crowd and towards the starting line. Ed stepped out, seeing Roy’s black and white race car next to his. Roy was leaning against his ride and talking to Jenny. She was making a show of tossing her beautiful hair and fluttering her eyes. Ed watched amused at her trying too hard.
Roy looked up and smiled smugly, onyx eyes catching Ed’s amber eyes. ”Nervous, Edo?”
Jenny turned, snorting when she saw Ed. ”Don’t start crying when I beat you with the rest of these pathetic losers.”
”Don’t get too cocky, Colonel-bastard. I came here to race, and I’ll have you sweating.”
Roy looked at Ed evilly, not doubting the blond. Roy’s gaze swept over Ed. He was wearing the standard black leather pants with a white shirt with the sleeves ripped off. On his hands he had a pair of white fingerless gloves, Roy following those hands as Ed brushed away a strand of blond hair from his eyes.
Before they could get into another spar, a loud horn blared, signalling five minutes until the race.
”That’s your cue,” Roy said to him. ”Either pull out or learn how it feels to lose.”
”You wish.”
Roy was amused by the younger man. ”Get out of the way and stay on the sidelines with Winry and Havoc.” Roy said to Jenny, still looking at Ed. Ed could tell she didn’t like being brushed off. He watched as Jenny turned her glare into a sweet smile and rubbed her chest up against Roy. "Good luck, baby," Ed heard her say before giving Roy a light kiss on the cheek and leaving the starting line area.
Rolling his eyes Ed slid into his car, not noticing Roy brush the lipstick from his cheek.
Ed attached his iPod to the loudspeakers and played the play list he listened to when racing. Another horn blared, announcing for the eight racers to move to the starting line a few yards away. He put his car in gear and drove it to the line. Ed cursed and backed up as he went a few feet over it and looked to his left, seeing Roy highly amused. Ed scolded himself for having humiliated himself before the race had even started.
"Racers, get ready!" A girl in front of them yelled, lifting her arms in the air. ”Get set!” Ed cranked up the engine, his hands set on the steering wheel determinedly. ”GO!”
When her arms fell, Ed stepped on the gas furiously.
They were off, a cloud of smoke behind them. Ed quickly pulled into third behind a lime green car. He pressed harder on the gas but before he could pull up beside the car in front of him, a pipe protruded from the back of the green car, releasing a thick, black cloud of smoke.
Ed panicked at first when he tried to see through the windshield but couldn’t. He looked to the right and flicked on the first turbo charge, praying he wouldn’t collide into anything. He gasped as the force of gravity pulled him back into his seat. He zoomed passed the lime green car and smiled proudly. His next task would be to pass Roy. The finish would be coming shortly and Ed had to hurry.
Roy looked into the front mirror and saw the one behind him was Ed. ”Damn,” he muttered. The blond was fast! Looking ahead Roy saw the grand final of the race. They would have to cross the train tracks and from there you could see the finish. There was a loud sound to his right and Roy turned his head. ’Oh shit!’
Ed soon noticed that he was gaining on Roy and smirked when the lead racer had to switch on another NOS to gain distance. Ed had failed to hear the first sound but at the second horn he looked to his right, his eyes growing wide. A train was leaving the station and the lights at the crossing were red. Looking ahead Ed saw how Roy continued. And with his speed was able to cross the railway safely. Roy was going to win. If he was sane, Ed would treasure his life and unbroken limbs over a small victory. But Ed wasn’t that sane.
Roy slowed down after crossing the railway and waited for the younger man to do the same. Roy almost gasped when he saw Ed do the opposite, turning around to see how the younger man continued forward with the train reaching the crossing.
”Are you insane?!” Roy said out loud. ”You’re going to get killed!”
Ed clutched the steering wheel even harder and flicked his last switch to gain more speed. He could practically hear the horn of the train in his ear when he reached the railway. Ed closed his eyes….
Was he in heaven? Or hell? He didn’t feel dead. Opening his eyes he saw that he was on the street, the finish right in front of him and the people waving him to hurry. He couldn’t believe it! He was alive and about the cross the finish!
’This is it!’ he thought with only a few more feet. But before he could cross it, a flash of blue and white zoomed passed his, the passenger smirking. It crossed the finish only milliseconds before him.
And it was over.
He screeched his car to a stop in anger. "Fuck!" Ed yelled, slamming his fist down on the wheel, inadvertently honking. He violently threw off his straps and got out of the car, only to be met with a crowd gathering around the first tow cars that had made it in: His and Roy’s.
People were congratulating Roy and patting his back, if not to give him praise, then just to be able to tell their friends that they had touched the Flame himself.
Ed just glared at him, pulling off his gloves and crossing his arms over his chest. Roy looked over at him.
”It was a nice try. I underestimated you. But it wasn’t the first time you pulled such a stunt, was it? What did they call you where ever you came from?”
”Fullmetal,” Ed responded dryly.
”Fullmetal? Cute, just like your driving.”
"You know damn well that I’ve come closer to beating you than any other person has. You only beat me by, what? Half a second?"
Roy snorted. "It doesn’t matter whether you win by an inch…or a mile. Winning is winning. And that’s the first lesson you need to learn if you plan on joining the real game."
"Oh, don’t worry Colonel-bastard. I plan on joining. And it’s only a matter of time before I take you out of it."
The crowd "ooohed" and looked at Roy to see what he would say. But before he could respond, a horn was blown.
"Oh shit!!" someone yelled. "Cops! Everybody run!" As that was said, everyone sprinted towards their cars, creating a huge scramble. Ed started to run towards his car, hoping it could manage the runaway after he had so ruthlessly pushed it to its limits, but someone grabbed him by hi shoulder, turning him around and pulling Ed towards Roy’s car.
”Come with me, you’ll probably get yourself locked up if you try running by yourself." Roy opened the driver’s side, assuming Ed knew to get into the other side. When they were both strapped in, Ed looked at the older man.
”Do you know what you are doing?”
”No,” Roy said simply before hitting the gas.
