The Foreign Exchange Student: Chapter 3

Heero looked out the window on the airplane, looking at the ocean. It was so blue, more blue than he had ever remebered it being. He reached in his bag to pull out his laptop and he pulled out an envelope. It had his name written on it with his mother's handwriting. He pulled out the letter.

Heero,

I have something that I need to tell you. I couldn't tell you in person, the only way I could do it was by writing it. I have cancer and the doctors tell me that I won't make it. I made sure and sent you to America because it was your father's wish and I feel that I may be joining him soon. Don't worry about me. I promise when I have a break from chemo that I will come and visit you. Do well in school and try to fit in, in your new home. The family you are going to be living with will treat you well. I have talked to them on several occasions. Their only child, Duo Maxwell, is the same age as you are. You should get along well. I included a picture of him that got sent to here. Make me proud, son. Make your father proud, too. He's looking down on you, smiling, I just know he is. I love you, my son.

Love,
-Mom

Heero tried to wipe the tears from his eyes as he pulled the picture out of the envelope. Duo was very beautiful, he thought to himself. He had long, flowing, chestnut brown hair. His eyes were a deep violet, to lovely to be a fake color. Duo was the most lovely teenage boy he had ever seen. He surely started crushing on him. Heero knew he was gay, he just wasn't open about it, not even his mother knew. He just wondered about Duo. He stared at the picture for hours it seemed, until the stewardess starting handing out dinner plates.

He tucked the picture back into the envelope along with the letter and placed it back into his bag. He pulled down the tray from the back of the seat in front of him and received a plate of food from the stewardess. It was some kind of American food. A sort of chicken concoction. He had never seen it before. He was hungry anyway and he wasn't going to let good food go to waste. So, he began eating it.

It had a rather spicy, but juicy taste to it. It was unlike any other thing he had eaten. He could get used to it. He could used to this American way of cooking. He smiled. He knew America wasn't going to be as bad as he thought it would be. He continued to eat more of the chicken and the rest of the interesting things on the plate. There was something fluffy and white on the plate. It tasted like potatoes, but he wasn't sure what it was exactly.

He looked over at the man in the seat next to him, "Excuse me, sir, could you tell me what this is?" Heero asked, pointing at the mystery substance.

"Oh those?" the man replied, "That is mashed potatoes. Is it your first time ever eating those?"

Heero nodded, "I have never eaten American foods before. You see, I am moving there and I am going to be there for the first time. I am finishing my last year of high school in Los Angeles."

"Do you know which high school you will be attending?" the man asked him.

"I am not sure. I got into a foreign exchange program and all I know is that I am going to be staying with someone named Duo Maxwell."

"The Maxwell's, I know who they are. His parents are the richest realtors in Los Angeles. Duo is one lucky kid to be raised by them. He is going to have many opportunities waiting for him when he gets older. He is probably going to be inheriting that company. My name is John Brausch, by the way. I am their banker."

"I am Heero Yuy, nice to meet you."

"It's a pleasure. If you want, I can help you find Duo when we get to the airport. It's the least I can do to help out. I know this place is going to be unfamiliar to you. I would hate for you to be lost and alone in an unfamiliar country," John told him.

"I would highly appreciate that," Heero said, a smile forming on his face. He didn't know Americans were that friendly. He was happy to know that someone else was able to show kindness to someone that they didn't know. Heero glanced back over at the man, and then looked back at his dinner plate. He finished the rest of that new food with a sense of urgency. It would still be several more hours until he reached Los Angeles.
