Ed started to traipse through the front hall, until his companion cleared his throat and looked down. The blonde stared at his feet for a moment before levering his boots off and kicking them under the small table with Roy’s shoes. He wiggled the still sock encased toes of his flesh foot and sighed at the relief.
“So, this is your house?” Ed asked in curiosity, he had just assumed that the raven haired man lived at the office. Mustang looked around his humble unit and smiled to himself. “It belonged to my mother and when she passed away- I inherited it.” He explained quietly, lost in some distant memory of his childhood. Trying to imagine the flame alchemist as child amused Ed, the image of a small and diapered Mustang was too much. Roy was brought back from his musings by Edwards laughing and raised a brow in query. All the younger man could do was shake his head and motion to continue the tour.
They walked passed a small living area, with no surprise, that held a fireplace that was well used. Two large book cases one full of Alchemic books, the other full of what appeared to be novels of some description. Ed wandered passed the deep red lounge suite to see what it was Mustang reads in his down time. When Roy realised where the man was heading, he quickly suggested that they move on to the kitchen.
It was considerably larger than the living room and was splashed with pastel shades of blue and trimmings of white. Edward began to wonder if the house had even had any renovations done since Roy’s mother passed. The counter long and marbled white and grey, the pot bellied stove sat just away from the wall and made Ed’s stomach growl as if in demand for food. Sheepishly he grinned at Mustang and pointed to the offending organ. “I think I need to eat.” Roy crossed to the pantry and peered inside, moving containers aside he finally emerged with two packets of ramen and held them up for approval. With a nod the flame alchemist filled a steel kettle with water and stuffed some paper into the guts of the stove, standing up he clicked lazily and Ed watched the papers light up in obedience, the water above started to bubble almost instantly.
“Why didn’t you just heat the water? Or I could have…” Ed asked as Roy tipped the noodles into the pot and poked at them with a fork to break them up. “Not everything in life has to be instant, Full Metal, sometimes things should take just as long as they need to be ready.” He seemed almost softer in his own environment. Edward had never thought he would see the man in such a relaxed state, or cooking for that matter, it made him uneasy at the situation.
“So you want me to conduct or sit in on the interrogations?” Ed enquired as picked at bits of fluff on his pants. Roy tilted his head in the direction of the young alchemist in thought and consideration. ”I think for at least one of them, it would be better if you just watched and listened.” He wanted to make a snide remark on how he doubted the fact that the man knew how to sit still for very long or to pay attention to anything for longer than a wings beat, but he didn’t, things had settled into a nice- albeit uncertain- calm for them both and he didn’t want to agitate it by insulting the hot headed blonde.
Ed nodded in consent and tapped the fingers of his chain mail arm in the counter top. Pausing as the memory of their earlier encounter flowed back to him. Watching from lowered lashes as the flame alchemist had tentatively touched the metal limb and explored the joints. It had made his stomach do flip flops in a way that he hadn’t felt in a very long time. He cleared his throat and prayed that he wasn’t blushing as Mustang handed him his bowl and headed towards the glass sliding door in the back of the room. “My room at central is always cold, so it makes sense for a fire.” He explained as he held the door open for him and then shut it behind them. “Unfortunately my home doesn’t quite maintain a natural coolness.” He almost sounded apologetic as they sat down in the lawn chairs with their food. No conversation was traded with them after that, just silence and night as they lost themselves in their food and their thoughts.
The silence stretched as far as the night sky and yet neither man could bring himself to break it. It was the most comfort either of them had had since the war. Finally Mustang rose and took Ed’s bowl from him, without a word, the blond followed him inside instinctively as if they were still on the battlefield and he was still receiving orders.

Roy rinsed out the bowls and sat them on the dish rack to dry, spun on his heel to cross the room and came face to face with Edward, both men faltered as they realised their proximity; a blush rising to their cheeks. The feeling from watching Ed earlier came back to Mustang and he fought the urge to reach out once more for the prosthetic limb. “Drink?” He offered, voice husky. The blonde nodded and backed up slightly to let him pass, cursing his inability to just act. Where had his ‘Fools-rush-in’ attitude run to?
He accepted the mug of what seemed to be coffee from him and they moved to the living room. “So when did you realise about Tucker’s research?” Ed asked as he stared into the blackness of his mug. Cursing the fact that all he seemed to be able to talk about was that accursed man. Mustang stood by the empty fire place as he thought back to when it had all started with the investigation. “Honestly? We found a pile of Nina’s bodies in an abandoned workshop and knew something wasn’t right.” Roy watched as Elric’s fingers flexed around the mug, one would have to be struck blind to not notice that he was agitated. Clearing his throat he changed the subject swiftly.
“So how is Alphonse?” The sound of his brother’s name brought Ed back to this room, this world, and he watched as Ed paced behind the chairs subconsciously. “He is fine, great actually. Notice of his engagement to Winry should be getting posted soon.” Mustang’s head jerked round in surprise. “He’s engaged?” He asked in shock, not believing the news to begin with. “Yeah, he and Winry got close again once Al got his body back.” He shrugged and sipped his coffee; golden eyes raking over the bookcase. Before Roy could comment on the situation Ed coughed deeply and sputtered his coffee over the carpet, Mustang crossed the room and thumped the man sharply on the back between his shoulder blades. Once he had caught his breath, Ed pointed in the direction of the books before them and gurgled. “What?” Mustang was worried that the man had seen someone lurking by the window.
“YOU READ ROMANCE BOOKS?!” Ed cried eyeing the red books lining the shelf of the second bookcase. Romance was putting it nicely, he could see some of the titles there and they were just pure smut. Roy left Ed’s side and positioned himself in front of his guilty pleasures. He didn’t need to justify what he read in his own time, but he didn’t want Edward to read some of the names either. Gathering his calm about him once more, Ed’s ‘fools-rush-in’ attitude finally returned and he found himself almost nose to nose with the man he called Fuhrer. Golden eyes searching the deep pools of obsidian before him, silently begging for the answers he had been longing to hear for months, as their breathing deepened. Ed reached behind the taller man, not breaking eye contact and retrieved a book from the shelf, flipping it opened between them.
“Edward…” Roy’s voice was breathy and weak, but it held a warning for the blonde to stop, which of course was completely ignored as Ed glanced down at the page and skim read the first few lines, his eyes growing large at subject. Roy could feel the heat rising fast to his cheeks and he reached for the book, only for Ed to duck it out of his reach and look up at him, Mustang backed up a step at the look in the man’s eyes. Taking the opportunity Edward stepped forward, bringing them nose to nose once more and read the first line.
“Their bodies entwined against the brick wall as their lips met in a long and lust filled kiss. Hands tangled in hair and groins met in a fevered pace, both men gasped as their erections met…” Edward trailed off and looked back up at his companion slyly, knowing this was his window, this was how to test the waters. Roy attempted to break eye contact with him, turning his head to face the wall, praying that Ed would just put the book back and drop the subject. Foolish thinking, as he knew what the Full Metal Alchemist was like and knew that he was like a dog with a bone…Mustang cringed as his poor choice of metaphor.
Ed reached out and placed the book back in its allocated slot and made sure his hand brushed against Mustang’s arm in the process. He heard him swallow hard and it made him smile, well this could be fun, moving his hand back to side and making sure that their fingers brushed on the way through. It was almost like sparks went off between them, the tension thick and heady, Roy knew he would have to say something- do anything to diffuse the situation before it got out of control. He couldn’t have this kind of talk going on in his command.
“Edward, I am entitled to my own life outside of my duties, I do not have to tell everyone every sordid detail.” Ed raised a brow at the defensiveness in his voice, moving so that their chests were almost touching. “Who said anything about the office?” Ed whispered into the man’s ear, he had had to push up on his toes to do it, but was rewarded as the older man shuddered deliciously against him. Roy’s head bowed so they were cheek to cheek, their movements slow and hesitant as neither man was sure of the outcome of their actions, nor whether the other was receiving it well. Ed’s hand once again brushed against Roy’s and instead of letting it pass, Mustang allowed his fingers to lightly catch together with smaller ones, he felt Elric’s breath hitch his chest and the nervousness rose.
“Full Metal..” He started, knowing what ever this was needed to be stopped, but one look down into Ed’s flushed and wanting face gave him pause. “Mustang?” Ed pushed, leaning closer on tip toe, the flame alchemist smelt inviting and the blonde was not going to ignore it. He had come to far now to just stop and let things slide back to the way they were. He had to know, had to find out if what was happening here was reality, or fantasy. When there was no response, Ed took control and swept his lips across Roy’s pale ones, losing himself in the velvet feeling beneath his mouth. He felt Roy go frigid against him and his heart sank. It was all over, he had his answer.
He closed his eyes against the tears and made a move to pull away when Roy’s hand clamped on his flesh arm, pulling him back against the firm body. Those pale lips fell upon his in a way that made Ed melt, he still wasn’t sure what this was, or whether it was the answer he was searching for. All he knew was that Roy felt like home, felt safe; He was going to express that to him tonight whether it killed him or not.
